Leap 15.5 retrospective feedback is now seeking action items

Hello openSUSE! I would like to share categorized openSUSE Leap 15.5 retrospective results with all contributors, team leads, and individuals who directly or indirectly contribute to openSUSE Leap! https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:15.5/Retrospective Feel free to review relevant sections for you or your team and see if you could help to address some of the issues. I already started making action items for the obvious ones, however, It would really help me if you'd share any suggestion or ideas. Feel free to link action items to the wiki, such as links to github issues, bugs, progress-o-o, trello, jira, code-o-o feature links. I promise that I'll try to help driving "reasonable ones" to the completion. I already agreed with the review round that Leap 15.6 retrospective will have explicit "written" suggestion in the "what didn't go too well" section to open a bug and reference it in the next. I'm aware that might take away the anonymity aspect of the survey, however, as it is now it's impossible to react to some of the feedback without an effective feedback loop such as discussion in bugzilla. Problem sending message to gmail account

I got a message from a gmail account to my opensuse.org address and tried to send an answer on that message with this opensuse.org address as sender. I configured my email client to send it to my provider, who accepted the message and did send it on to GMail. However GMail refused to accept the message and requires a proper SPL or a proper DKIM signature. A proper SPL would mean that I should not send the message via my provider but via a system that is authorized by SPL to send message with an opensuse.org address as the sender. Most likely a server owned by (open)SUSE. I am working to enable singing certain messages with my own DKIM signature, but I don't know if GMail will accept such a message, because there is no relation between the DKIM signature and my opensuse.org address. Signing the message with a DKIM signature of opensuse.org would mean that I should have the secret key of that signing certificate. Updating dutch wiki

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is th right venue to ask my question. I trust you'll put me in the right direction if needed :-). I'm trying to edit some pages on nl.o.o . however some seem to be locked and have rather outdated information and links. To whom should I turn to get this resolved? I sent an email to the most likely person, who edited the page some six years ago. However I did not get a reply. Any help to get this sorted would be much appreciated. Kind regards, Natasha

OBS & openQA classes for bootstrap.academy

Hi all, In the community meeting on June 15, the topic of creating classes for the Open Build Service and openQA on bootstrap.academy were brought up. I had the action item on line #38 https://etherpad.opensuse.org/p/weeklymeeting20230615 to see if bootstrap.academy would be willing to accept any community members efforts to create classes for that platform and be willing to collaborate and work together on content. bootstrap.academy were interested and are willing to provide detailed courses on usage, implementation and configuration. there is also in interest to offer a certificate to show those who take the courses are experts. If you are interested in helping to create content and working with bootstrap.academy to get OBS & openQA courses online, let me know or join the Thursday community meeting. Call for Leap 15.6 Early feature requests

Hello openSUSE! Now that we have Leap 15.6 *confirmed it is time to collect ideas in https://code.opensuse.org/leap/features/issues This call is for those who know that update of their favorite package(s) in Leap 15.6 will depend on a update of a SLES package. We're also interested in tracking higher level or more complex requests/ideas that will require some co-ordination and or could use some more visibility as the list is also input for Release Annoucement etc. SLES Release Management would like to have all "early" features for SLES 15 SP6 requsted by 21st of July, which is in a bit more than month from now. We can of course request SLES 15 SP6 features even after the deadline, but they could be potentially treated as late features which comes with extra process overhead. Leap itself isn't as strict, and we basically accept new packages / features until the code submission *deadline for Leap 15.6 Beta, which is end of February 2023. Leap 15.6 Features that we already know will land late, due to their own schedule should ideally be tracked in code- o-o as well. Recent events on our mailing lists - update, apology and next steps

Dear openSUSE community, We, the openSUSE Board, are issuing the following statement to provide updates around recent discussions and behavior on openSUSE mailing lists that violated openSUSE values and the openSUSE Code of Conduct. In the past few weeks our mailing lists were subjected to heated and unpleasant threads, sparked by attempts to stir up controversy and inflame rhetoric with attacks on a minority group protected by the openSUSE Code of Conduct. These threads quickly took a nasty turn and we, the openSUSE Board, received numerous complaints against several people on both sides of the "debate". After two excruciating weeks of ongoing discussions on the lists, we took action and started issuing sanctions to those in violation of our Code of Conduct. Unfortunately these decisions and actions were slow, shortsighted and needed more reflection. Reflecting upon our decisions, as well as receiving feedback from some of you, we realized we should (a) have taken action much quicker, (b) in a more differentiated manner to account for circumstances, and (c) communicated more clearly. We want to extend our most sincerest apology to our community members for the way the situation was handled; we understand this has caused distress for some of you. Our goal now is to rectify our mistakes and ensure that our actions support and defend openSUSE's core values for an inclusive, open and welcoming community. Therefore, we have decided upon the the following actions: 1) As a collective, the Board will not be "neutral" and actively participate in the protection of community members (especially to support minorities and protected classes) in line with the openSUSE Code of Conduct. This recognizes that the Board remains "impartial" when called to mediate conflicts between participants in the openSUSE Project. 2) Bad-faith actors and instigators that inflamed the discourse in the past few weeks with malice have been sanctioned with a permanent ban from the openSUSE community. 3) Others who were found to have violated the Code of Conduct were put under moderation for periods proportional to the severity and circumstances of their actions. (In particular, we took into account intentions of those coming to the defense of others.) 4) We are considering formal Code of Conduct training for Board members and moderators. 5) We are collaborating on a document with guidelines and best practices for moderators. 6) With regards to mailing lists, it is apparent that moderation is challenging. We are actively engaged in determining the best course of actions to improve the situation. 7) We are formalizing a new complaint process. We hope that the steps above will prove beneficial for openSUSE. We erred in our original handling of the situation and aim to do better going forward. Your feedback is always welcome! The following release announcement of Leap 15.5 can be found on news.opensuse.org NUREMBERG, Germany – The release of openSUSE’s latest 15-series version marks years of maintenance and security that began more than five years ago.. The maturity of Leap 15.5 comes into play as new technological changes of the last five years have been introduced, such as container technologies, immutable systems, virtualization, embedded development, and other high-tech advances. Entrepreneurs, hobbyists, professionals and developers use Leap as a go-to Linux distribution as seen by the increase in usage from each minor release. Traversing from legacy software to more modern systems is imminent. Leap 15.5, which is based on SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Service Pack 5, will receive maintenance and security updates until the end of 2024. This will provide users with plenty of time to transition to the release’s successor; a successor has yet to be confirmed. Users interested in commercial support can use a new tool to transition to commercial support. Leap can be downloaded at get.opensuse.org. This release brings newer packages like Mesa and others, but Leap 15.5 is a non-feature release. Some of these newer packages to highlight include KDE Plasma 5.27, which is a Plasma Long Term Support version until the next one rolls out in 2024. Konqi lovers will enjoy a new welcome wizard, dynamic customization of desktop workspaces and more functionality with KRunner that includes a full desktop search, unit and currency exchange rate conversions, dictionary definitions, calculator features, and it shows graphical representations of mathematical functions. The Color Picker had a few improvements and added the possibility of displaying another preview color circle. KDE Gear 22.12.3 will be a new package in the release and complement the use of Plasma 5.27. The update fixes bugs with the Desktop Environment applications and highlights the enhancement of compression/decompression utility ark, improvements to text editor Kate and fixes some crashing of the video editor Kdenlive. Qt 5.15 LTS is available with the KDE Qt 5 patch collection. Text editor Vim will upgrade to a new major version. Vim 9 has a new script language that drastically improves performance. Increases in execution speed of 10 to 100 times is expected for the text editor. Users are recommended to read the project’s Vim 9.0 release information to know how the upgrade affects legacy scripts, backwards compatibility and other new features added in the release. For professionals configuring networking of Linux containers, the netavark 1.5.0 package is in the release. Users who have already transitioned to Flatpaks will have an updated 1.14.4 version that addresses a Common Vulnerability and Exposure with CVE-2023-28101. The newer version fixes the hiding of permissions for an attacker publishing a Flatpak app with malicious intent to elevate permissions. Leap 15.5 is set to have the OpenH264 repository enabled by default for all new installations thanks to contributions from Open Source at Cisco. Leap 15.5 comes with Linux Kernel 5.14.21 that including backports for this SUSE specific LTS kernel. Leap 15.5 shares the kernel with SLE 15 SP5 that receives the same fixes and backports along, which includes a few thousand other shared packages. The device firmware updater package fwupd will change to version 1.8.6. The newer version fixes compiling errors when building for s390x and ppc64le Good news for Python developers. Leap 15.5 users will have a fully usable Python 3.11 stack in parallel to the system Python (python36). This provides a more modern release for users and developers. Packagers are advised to switch to Python 3.11. Other packages users may notice a change to are updates of Ugrep 3.11.0 and NetworkManager 1.38.6. Both webkit2gtk3 and webkit2gtk4 will update to version 2.38.5. Mozilla’s internet browser Firefox will get a new Extended Support Release version - 102.9.0. Mozilla’s email client Thunderbird gains various visual and user experience improvements with version 102.8.0. End of Life openSUSE Leap 15.4 will have its End of Life (EOL) six months from today’s release. Users should update to openSUSE Leap 15.5 within six months of today to continue to receive security and maintenance updates. Important for users upgrading from previous versions A new 4096-bit RSA signing key was introduced as part of openSUSE Leap 15.5 as well as 15.4 via a maintenance update. Leap 15.4 users are expected to update their system prior to upgrade of 15.5. Project Announces Plans for Another Minor Leap 15 Release

Hello openSUSE! We’d like to announce that the openSUSE Release team plans to work on openSUSE Leap 15.6. openSUSE Leap 15.6 is expected to be released in early June 2024 and would reach its end of life by the end of the year 2025. This decision was based on recent discussions at SUSE Labs and openSUSE Conference, and it reflects recent changes, progress on individual projects, and our new distribution *architect. This will also enable us to provide SUSE customers with an updated Package HUB module, as both SLES 15 SP5 and Leap 15.6 would be considered a feature release based on our *tick-tock release model. With a Leap 15.6, more time is given for efforts related to an ALP- based Leap 15.X *successor. A more detailed explanation of the situation at lkocman’s oSC2023 “Leap 16.0?” talk. Codices of Conduct: A fundamental critique

Hello, We've recently had a bit of a tussle on the Factory list over LGBT flags, on the OpenSUSE subreddit to put it mildly. In that tussle, the code of conduct was used as a very blunt instrument in a bid to silence people who disagreed with flying such flags and/or forcing people to fly flags in general. I'd like to share a few observations about codices of conduct in general and the OpenSUSE one in particular (point 6 does not apply to it) that allow the very abuse we have seen: 1) The definitions of good and bad behavior are vague allowing for a lot of executive discretion in constructing actions or utterances as violations. 2) Enforcement is intransparent and arbitrary. There's a moderation team with "processes in place". Processes that are not even public! Determining and sanctioning violations is at the sole discretion of the executive (moderation team and openSUSE board - I'm not sure if these two are even separate/overlap free). 3) There is no appeal to an independent authority. The executive is judge, jury, executioner and authority for appeals. 4) It is insanely broad in scope: "openSUSE reserves the right to take actions against behaviors that happen in any context, if they are deemed to be relevant to the openSUSE project and its participants.". Yes, you can totally be Brendan Eiched for donating to the wrong political party under that rule. 5) Snitching is confidential and there are no codified repercussions to wrongly accusing or smearing somebody that way. 6) [This is not the case in the OpenSUSE code of conduct]: there usually is a err-on-the-side-of-caution clause that mandates removing people deemed in violation even while their guilt or innocence is still being determined. That is a reversal of the legal convention "innocent until proven guilty" democratic states have been operating on since Roman times. In summary I think codices of conduct are a horrible idea and should be done away with. They are regularly abused to force people to agree with or at least never speak out against the political ideology termed 'woke'. They create a climate of fear and division that simply has not existed before. Everyone is on constant notice, and has to weigh their words very carefully. Except for the ideologue themselves. They can abuse and denigrate everyone who speaks up against their ideology at will and will face zero repercussions for it. Regards, An Anonymous Techie

Leap 15.5 update

Hello openSUSE! I just received a heads up that SLES 15 SP5 has a confirmed GMC. So big congratulations to the SLES team. This implies that the Leap 15.5 build which is currently being cooked in OBS is our (first) Gold Master Candidate. So far everything suggests that we can keep up with the current https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Roadmap and have GA on June 7th.
