Hello openSUSE! Let me share an update on our simplified multimedia offer https://code.opensuse.org/leap/features/issue/22 With help from Neal, we've identified that our focus should be on FDK- AAC and openh264. **fdk-aac-free** You may have noticed that fdk-aac-free was already accepted in Factory. So this part is already covered. https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:License/FDK-ACC https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/multimedia:libs/fdk-aac-free I did talk to Antonio today and he's working on the integration part with SLE (therefore Leap) already for quite some time. Current plan is to have the codec available in Leap 15.4 Beta. **openh264** We've finally received a go on proceeding with Cisco's open h264 after some longer ping pong between Cisco and SUSE. The agreed plan is to re- build Cisco's openh264 in OBS and re-distribute it in a dedicated Cisco repository. The next agreed steps are that Neal will handle the initial packaging, submit the package to Factory for review, and the openSUSE release team would look into the third-party repository set up as mentioned in the code-o-o feature. Initially the library and the codec plugin for Mozilla browsers will be made available, with the GStreamer plugin coming later as the packaging for that is worked out. https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/multimedia:libs:cisco-openh264 Please watch code-o-o for further updates on progress. Google Summer of Code 2022

Hi All, Applications for mentor organizations for the Google Summer of Code 2022, will be from February 7 - 21, 2022. The openSUSE Project has a long history of participating as a mentor organization, and we hope to do so again this year! If you are interested in mentoring for your open source project, please let us know so that we can come up with a list of interested mentors, and can move forward with our application. As a mentor you would be committed to actively mentoring a student(s) if/when openSUSE becomes selected as an organization.This would involve keeping the student(s) on task, actively communicating with them and writing progress reports; there are 2 reports that mentors must write (a midterm and final review). The timeline for GSoC can be found at https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline, along with other relevant information on roles and responsibilities for both mentors and students. If there are enough interested mentors to proceed with an application, which we will let you know ASAP, potential mentors would need to update the git repository (https://github.com/openSUSE/mentoring) for https://101.opensuse.org, so that we can submit the application. Plans for multimedia codecs

-- message was also sent from a non-subscribed address. please drop that one if possible -- Hi, I've been following with great interest the 'simplified multimedia codec' topic on code.opensuse.org [1]. I've started an experiment were I run my Tumbleweed desktops without Packman. That has generally worked out well, with the notable exception of multimedia support in Firefox. I can play videos and get audio from Youtube, but most other social media sites ( Reddit/Twitter/FB) don't work. I see a couple of options to get back multimedia support: - switch to Chrome (not Chromium) - add back Packman - use Firefox via flatpak I'm ok with a partially-working system on the short term, but I am curious whether there is a longer-term plan to make this work out of the box. Questions for Board candidates

Hi, we now have the campaign period for the Board election [1], so let's start some discussion. :-) I really liked both platforms, which doesn't make decision easier, but let's see... First usual question for everyone: if You are appointed as Board member, which new options does it open for You? I mean, You both are valuable contributors, You have been working like that for notable time already, and You can keep doing so even if You are not elected into the Board. So what new can You do in Board? What would You like to do, what is impossible without Board? How can Board move You forward? Maurizio, if I read Your platform [2] correctly, I see impressive contribution and experience, but I fail to find something like "election programme", i.e. Your plans for Your time in Board, what You wish to achieve, etc. Am I reading election profile, or "just" user profile...? Side comment, when we have election for academic senate of our faculty, plenty of candidates more or less just list their scientific work, basically CV, but don't elaborate, how they would act like "politicians" in the senate. I then think if I can decide only about level of expertise, or also how they are capable to cooperate, organize, find consensus and move the institution forward. So, Maurizio, if You could be more explicit in this way, it'd be great. Of course, people can vote for You based on Your great expertize, but given the Board's purpose, I'd rather expect people to emphasize their organizational, communication, mediating and other skills. And, of course, how they would like to move openSUSE forward. What is Your aim in Board? What is Your reason to candidate? Adathor, I found Your Motivation section [4] very interesting. The described issues indeed let a lot of bad blood behind... Despite You described various issues rather in indications, I wonder what do You propose as solution? I know it can't be easy, neither short process, but I suppose You have some steps or at least ideas in mind how to improve the situation. Could You be more concrete here? I ask because nice words about respect can stay just... nice words without any practical impact. Also, do You think the way how Board works, what is its purpose [3], etc. should/could/might be worth to discuss and possibly change? Similarly for overall governance of the project, direction where it is going to, etc. Going back to beginning, the "docracy" works in many aspects, but we also saw some examples, when it led to unpleasant conflicts...
