[opensuse-project] A proposal for moving forward

In general, we have proven we're great at building the tools around building a distro, so lets leverage that as far as we can, take advantage of SUSE Elements for as much combined effort as we can, and make sure we're all having a lot of fun. ( Do what you want with this, it's just a set of ideas. ) (1) Tumbleweed is tumbleweed, and tumbleweed works. Don't change a thing about it, but encourage package/product maintainers to start working in OpenQA, so we can (continue to) have the most stable rolling GNU/Linux distro available. (2) Transition openSUSE packages over to Elements, up to X, but not including DEs or GUI apps. Lets take advantage of the situation to create more compatibility, and reduce redundant package maintenance on things that should be our stable foundation anyway. (3) openSUSE releases aligned with SLE GA & SP releases. Since we're building on SUSE Elements, it makes sense to use that as a release roadmap. (4) Re-spin openSUSE with Kernel::Stable For those that want a current vanilla kernel instead of the SUSE kernel, make it easy. Release on the same course as Tumbleweed: pkg update -> openQA -> release (5) Encourage DE project maintainers to Re-spin & release on major updates. GNOME 3.16 is stable? Release the openSUSE GNOME Live disc with 3.16. Plasma 5 is default? Release an updated openSUSE KDE image. There are currently three (now four) open issues for "openSUSE Release Process", but I don't seem to be able to update any of them. After the Richard talk at OSC, the status of openSUSE stays unclear, that's normal it have to be discussed, but I see it like this: * Tumbleweed, the rolling release will the distribution for advanced users * openSUSE? * I new variant (name?) will be more stable, very long time support (at least 3 years), yearly release? Hello, I very much like the idea of closing together opensuse and SLE for a couple of reasons: * at least from my personal point of view for the last 3 releases of opensuse the stability of the release at its starting point constantly decreased, resulting in of repairing and porting phase that gets longer and long after every release even if your are only using packages offered by SuSE (e.g. have you tried to update from 12.1 or 12.2 over the release steps to 13.2 with owncloud?) * There are a couple of server targets that do not need the full SLES program but simply a rocket solid basis an 1 to 3 progrmans on it /like mail servers) that you either can put on docker or run for small business on metal with an long running distribution. But you do not want to change it every 18 months with an constantly increasing migration effort resulting from the previous point. * SLES has not always been as solid as one might have wanted in all aspect or package; but it took quit a time to repair it. Joined effort might speed up her. From the last point: I think it essential for this approach to define /the fast way back for patches and drivers (if possible even kernel releases) from the community to SLE/. In that case this approach will immediately pay back to SLE regarding the fact that the components in server hardware nowadays also changes nearly as frequently as in consumer desktops. In ancient times I used packages from the SuSE distrubution for SLES installations when they were not available there... Given the fact that there is still no solution for opensuse 13.2 to startup a WLAN as system networking instead of user login related (due to the timing issues coming from that insane ideology of systemd that SLES still partly avoids...) there we be many use cases that needs a more stable better tested distribution rather than the newest software. And yes: I'm running tumbleweed where need the newest kernel. opensuse distribution in the current constatlation is not fast enough for this in any case. [opensuse-project] openSUSE Conference and Kolab Summit: The day(s) after!

Dear all! It has been awesome this year! So great to see so many of you again in The Hague! Some numbers: - We drank > 300L of tap beer and > 100L of openSUSE Beer (that's not bad)! - We drank ~250L coffee! - We had >70 sessions in 3 rooms, combined with the Kolab Summit we even had almost a 100 sessions spread over 6 rooms - At the height of the conference, on the Saturday afternoon, approx 220 openSUSE Conference and Kolab Summit attendees were in the building, that is an awesome result! - The group photo from the Sunday afternoon shows approx 150 people, and that isn't bad either! https://twitter.com/openSUSE/status/594813064387624960/photo/1 - Some people were carrying pedometers and the average daily stepratio was around 10k..... Other users who don't have these proprietary blobs can get faster update. Note: I hate it when I get reply from opensuse-project+owner, that my mail is blocked and then I realize that I forgot to set text as plain text. And android's gmail app doesn't even have this feature. Hi all! Yesterday I've learned a bit about numbers thanks to the numerologist and the 3 stands for creativity and the need to express idea's, feelings and visions. Well, that's exactly what we're going to continue with doing to day! A very random selection of a few highlights on the program for today: - For openSUSE we have Doug Demaio opening the day with a session that will go into the value of branding, a very important aspect that many open source projects still need some improvement on. - We have quite a number of security tracks today, so in scheduling Robin and I dubbed this Security Sunday, - A personal favourite is the workshop that will be given in the Kolab Security / Healthcare room in the morning (next to the openSUSE workshop room) by rkhunter and lynis creator Michael Boelen, who will show you how to protect your (groupware) server: https://conference.kolab.org/content/how-secure-your-linux-groupware-server… - In the afternoon, in the openSUSE Workshop room, Radically open security will do a hackathon on their NetAidKit, a home router targeting secure communications - To finish the sessions, a special super top secret Kolab announcement in the Kolab main hall (at the end of the venue, near the openSUSE workshop rooms) to close of the day, everyone is invited! - And we'll close the day with another BBQ, yay!
