Moin,
first refresh your mind and/or get inspired of the openSUSE conference 2009
[1].
And then let's have some starting conversation about openSUSE conference 2010.
Most important for the start is a place and a date. As place we think
Nürnberg, Germany is a good fit as it is good to reach from where ever you're
coming from and its a convenient place to attract as many SUSE/Novell
developers as possible.
For the venue we're aiming for the same venue we had last year -
Berufsförderungswerk Nürnberg [2] - which is perfect from a conference
perspective and has 75 hotel rooms on-site with a reasonable price. Downside
was internet connectivity (2Mbit) but they meanwhile can offer 4Mbit and work
on getting 10Mbit till mid of this year. So, with some luck this downside
should be solved till the conference takes place.
From a timing perspective we currently have two options for the openSUSE
conference:
a) week of Sept 6-12
b) week of Oct 18 - 24
I strongly vote for the latter variant b) as in Southern Germany its not just
still vacation season, it's still school vacation till Sept 13th or so which
means pretty many people are on vacation in reality. Further, most of the
preparation work would fall into the globally vacation season which might not
be perfect.
Last year we had a 4 days conference [3] from Thursday through Sunday which
imo was the right duration. My question would be if it should shift days, eg.
from Wednesday through Saturday ?
For the conference in general I propose to create a team which takes care of
everything such as key notes, major topics, content in general, sponsoring,
special events, PR, advertising etc..
What about doing a openSUSE conference 2010 kick-off meeting next week on
Thursday 22, 6pm CEST [4] on openSUSE-project IRC channel?
Looking forward having an effective conference organization and to see you all
at openSUSE conference 2010.
Best
M

Hey folks ,
Now that we are almost done with the Team's page Template [1] , there is
still scope of improvisation. You are requested to go through it once and
come with your suggestions . I also request the Art-Team if they could
prepare a Team Logo for every single team present in openSUSE.It would
be an essential and a great contribution ;) . As soon as the things are
finalized . I would ask the Teams to implement it accordingly .
Thanks a lot for your support.
Have a lot of fun !

PS : The Team-Organization will also be planned and out soon !.

Hello ,
As we all know , how well the teams perform and render their Best. But
thats not 100% of what it has to be , I mean the basic purposes are
completely fulfilled but the scope of other utilities like encouraging
new contributors and working effectively as Inter-Teams is a matter of
concern and not performed successfully .So in regard to that , I have
created a draft [1] mentioning What basic things are needed in a
particular Team Page , at the same time made another layout of how the
new TEAM page will look after complete organization and having the
fucntioning teams in hand (awaited ).
What I need you all do now is to come with your suggestions i.e what
extra does the page needs , how to make the page as user friendly as it
can be for the new-comers , Is the 'Contact Us' link fine for
Inter-Teams to work on or something special or something different is
needed :) keeping the new contributors in mind.
I hope I made myself clear or maybe my presentation is not good :) , to
make it clear . In short , Just discuss what you feel is required for
this case and then we come up with an effective approach for a good
Communication amongst us and the outer world ;)

There was recent discussion on forums ( http://tinyurl.com/yfg5zxw ) about one
particular case of user broumbroum23 (oBS home http://tinyurl.com/yb3ty37 )
and complain that wifi drivers listed on
http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Network_Adapters_(Wireless) don't work.
I semi protected http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Network_Adapters_(Wireless) to
prevent further escalation of edit war, until we can discuss the case and find
solution. Links that are disputed are in section
===Getting the latest Linux wireless subsystem===
that is now commented out to prevent random visitors to use them, so you can
see them in a source text.
Problem is that we need policy on public linking of files in user homes.
Now there is only recommendation, not much advertised, not to follow links to
oBS home directories, but there is nothing about publishing such files on
openSUSE wiki servers.
As mentioned in a forum thread, I will vote to explicitly ban links to oBS
home. The only exception are files used to test bug fixes and even then only
on pages that are used by people that are actually testing solutions, not on
random wiki pages, where from page title is clear that is not meant for
everyone.
The main reason for ban is to prevent users that are not aware of nature of
oBS home to damage their systems by installing files that didn't pass any
quality control.

One of the last questions mentioned "Ubuntu, SuSE and Redhat" - the
answer was 'Linux'.

As far as I am concerned, we're good to go to switch to the new PlanetSUSE
setup I've been hacking on the last few days.
It's currently running at
http://planet.opensuse.org/2/
(feeds not updated at the moment, as long as it's not live ;))
So this is the last chance to complain about issues and give input about
features to add, even though the latter would be for after going live with a
first version, except if it's a blocker ;)
(sorry for cross-posting, but not everyone is on opensuse-marketing@)
cheers
