The openSUSE Community Week[1] is going strong! Monday kicked off with a number of really informative and well-attended sessions on GNOME, KDE, testing, packaging, and more[2]. Tuesday is even more chock full of fun, with more sessions and plenty of openSUSE contributors on hand. If you want to get involved in openSUSE there's no time like the present! Be sure to spread the word -- write up Community Week on your blog, Tweet about it, Dent it, put it on your Facebook wall, or whatever it takes to get the word out about openSUSE Community Week! Our community week is a chance to get people from around the world together at the same time to focus on specific topics, and to transfer knowledge about openSUSE to help grow our teams. openSUSE Community Week[1] runs from May 11 through May 17. Our community week is a chance to get people from around the world together at the same time to focus on specific topics, and to transfer knowledge about openSUSE to help grow our teams. The idea is to cover topics to empower ourselves as a community by broadening our knowledge, and to enable new contributors to openSUSE and open source. The week is starting off with sessions in GNOME, KDE, packaging, and much more. As a reminder -- all sessions are being held in IRC. If you need help getting started with IRC, see the openSUSE wiki for more[2]. The entire week's schedule can be found on the wiki[3]. [opensuse-project] Code names

Hi, The code names I came up with the morning I posted the schedule, were not so great (check the forum to see a lot of people offended), so I would like to discuss it more generally: what is a good code name line? I actually love the philosopher's line as it gives openSUSE some kind of nice touch, but we'd still need some numbers associated with it. And as I watched a monthy python live DVD on the weekend, I came up with the idea to put the naming in better hands :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92vV3QGagck - check 0:27 and 0:48 into the video to see 2 possible lists. (or if you like it as boring text, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Philosophers'_Football_Match) Or someone has an even better idea on how to solve this problem. Personally I'm not overly bothered about code names especially when it comes to having it as the main reference for a release. If it's used as a "pet name" then fine and I vote for the philosipher theme. I don't see why we should change the naming/versioning convention that has been used, it works very well so why try and fix it? There seems to be a tendency at the minute to jump on the band-wagon and do what the other buggers are doing, and to this I most definitely say NO! openSUSE is believe it or not a pioneer in many a space within the Linux community, and as such should forge its own way not play follow the herd (or should that be hurd? :-) ) So to re-iterate my stance, no to code names but if we go for a code name use it only as a pet name rather than the primary name. Thank you for listening, this has been a party politiccal broadcast for openSUSE. [opensuse-project] Get Ready for openSUSE Community Week!

The first openSUSE Community Week[1] is just around the corner. May 11 through May 17 we'll be hosting live sessions in IRC to help grow the openSUSE Community. Community week is all about helping new contributors get started with openSUSE and getting existing contributors together to mentor new contributors, and working together on major projects. We'll be hosting a week of IRC tutorials, Q&A's, and jam sessions on a number of topics. Learn to work with the testing/QA team, create packages, work with the openSUSE Build Service, help work on the wiki, or get involved with the GNOME and KDE teams. There's something for everybody[2]. Schedule and Topics =================== The Community Week schedule is posted on the openSUSE Wiki[3]. Each topic has its own schedule, and new sessions are still being added -- so be sure to check the schedule throughout the week for new and exciting sessions. If you have general project questions or aren't sure where to go during Community Week, talk to us in #opensuse-project on Freenode[4]. And, as always, questions about contributing to openSUSE are always welcome on the openSUSE Project mailing list[5]. Help with Community Week ======================== Even if you're not leading any sessions, you can still pitch in and help with Community Week. We need contributors to "staff" IRC channels to mentor new contributors, and to spread the word about openSUSE Community Week. If you'd like to lead a session, there's still time. Contact Zonker[6] with a topic, abstract, and times you can hold sessions. To mentor and answer questions, just show up! [opensuse-project] GSoC introduction - openSUSE@ARM

Hi openSUSE community! I’m glad my proposal was accepted and today I want to introduce myself and my GSoC project. /me , thats Jan-Simon Möller and I’m just finishing my Diploma in electrical engineering at the Leibniz Universität Hannover. I’m coordinator of the openSUSE Weekly Newsletter and contribute also to the hamradio repository, the iFolder project and the openSUSE Build Service. See also my “People of openSUSE” interview. My Project in short: openSUSE@ARM My aim during GSoC 2009 is to port first the base to the ARM platform. Then KIWI needs also some attention when it comes to imaging and after that the tools, Kernel and X11. I’ll heavily use the capabilities of the openSUSE Build Service, which is now ready for ARM. During the last few days, I’ve done many little preparations to get it all flying when GSoC coding period starts. Have fun ! [opensuse-project] openSUSE 11.1 KDE4 Reloaded: Includes KDE 4.2.2 and 11.1 updates

While 11.2 is still months away[1] there's still plenty of activity going on with openSUSE. In addition to last week's milestone release[2], you can also get your hands on openSUSE 11.1 Reloaded. This is a respin of openSUSE 11.1[3], including KDE 4.2.2 packages and updates to 11.1. This is an installable live CD that features the KDE 4.2.2 packages from the openSUSE Build Service repo. The live CD was created by Stephan 'Beineri' Binner, and is useful for people who want to test out KDE 4.2 and users who are doing new installs and want the most recent openSUSE updates straight out of the box. See the KDE 4.2.2 announcement[4] for more information on the improvements and new features in KDE 4.2.2. Some features in openSUSE's distribution of KDE differ slightly from a stock install of KDE. The "cashew" (Toolbox) is not enabled by default. It ships with the "Aya" theme and includes some bugfixes and enhancements over the stock 4.2.2 release. The Reloaded live CD also defaults to the KDE4 versions of Amarok (2.0.2) and Digikam (0.10). A Note of Caution ================= Please note that this is not an "official" openSUSE release, and has not undergone the same kind of testing that stable releases receive. Additional openSUSE KDE News ============================ As Will Stephenson points out, if you're following the KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop repository, you'll soon start getting KDE 4.3 packages. If you want to keep on with the KDE 4.2 packages, use the new KDE:42 repo[5]. The live CD is pre-configured to use this repository, so no need to worry about getting moved to 4.3 unless you change it.
