Load ac and battery modules on boot

I need to load ac and battery modules on SuSE 8.2 on boot. I can load them normally with modprobe, but if I put them in /etc/modules.conf, then I get a big mess during booting. Can anybody tell me exactly how to do this? Thanks!

I need to build a module for a Radeon 9000 for use with the Mantel k_smp-2.4.21-59.i586 kernel. kernel-source is not yet installed. In Mantel's directory there are several files and it's not clear to me which one(s) I need: README k_smp-2.4.21-59.i586.rpm k_athlon-2.4.21-59.i586.rpm k_smp-2.4.21-59.src.rpm k_athlon-2.4.21-59.src.rpm kernel-source-2.4.21-59.i586.rpm k_deflt-2.4.21-59.i586.rpm kernel-source-2.4.21-59.src.rpm k_deflt-2.4.21-59.src.rpm kernel-source-um-2.4.21-59.i586.rpm The kernel I have installed was from k_smp-2.4.21-59.i586.rpm but I'm not sure which combination from k_smp-2.4.21-59.src.rpm kernel-source-2.4.21-59.i586.rpm kernel-source-2.4.21-59.src.rpm kernel-source-um-2.4.21-59.i586.rpm contain the source to it. Can anyone shed any light on the fact that the new file, kdegraphics3-scan-3.1.1-177.i586.rpm, located on SuSE's ftp site, is 45mb in size and only contains kooka? The last one I downloaded was only 453kb big, so that seems to me to be quite a discrepancy in file size! Problems with hotplugging PCMCIA wireless card

All - I have recently upgraded to the 2.4.21-59 Mantel kernel, and now whenever I try to hotplug my wireless PCMCIA card (a Linksys WPC55AG) it panics the kernel. What I'd like to know is - is there something new in the kernel which would cause this - how can I capture the panic messages? I have tried the <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<F10> but there is no response, the machine is locked up tight This is SuSE Pro 8.2, on a Sony VAIO laptop (P4M 1.8GHz, 512MB RAM, 30GBHD, DVD/CD-RW combo, ATI Radeon 7500 LW). Can't custimize K Menu

Hello all. I have a strange problem. I installed OpenOffice.org RC3 today and noticed that the menu entries won't show up. I also noticed that when I right click on a document such as a powerpoint presentation and select "Open With" I don't see open office in the list of programs to choose from. I then opend up the menu editor and saw that OpenOffice does indeed have a menu entry that is not hidden. I then tried removing and adding menu entires and found that nothing I did affected the contents of the K Menu whatsoever. I tried removing my .kde directory and that didn't work either. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? I'm using Suse 8.2 Pro and KDE 3.1.3. -Greg

Installing NVidia drivers failing

I have just tried to install the latest NVidia drivers and cannot - they don't contain a version for my kernel (k_athlon from 8.2, updated via YOU to 2.4.20-100) and installing the kernel sources from the DVD doesn't let them compile. I cannot connect to any servers using YOU (the msttfonts package is failing the signature check and aborting the update before I even get a package listing) and update the sources, so the NVidia installer can't even compile a module for me. How can I get the nvidia driver installed? 2nd Linux box: what can I do ..

I was just 'given' another box that I intend to turn into a plaything for files and such. I do not currently have the office space to set up another workstation. I've seen posts where people have been telneting or sshing into boxes within their own office. Is this correct? And if so, is there a way that I can set this machine up and then just leave the keyboard and mouse attached with the machine sitting in the corner (still on the network) and access everything on it? Even Gnome, OpenOffice, Evolution, and such? If this is possible, where would I go to find out more on how to do this? -=Thinker

Mozilla's image block

Hi all, The "block images from this site" option in Mozilla works wonderful. Except for one thing. Some sites make you pay for this luxury by loading a flash animation if the image can't be loaded. It seems. How do I go about blocking these, without disabling flash altogether? Thanks Hans

3Ware raid card question....ya, another one.

I got my card in and working. I'm currently booting and running my system off the drive that is connected to the card. I have a second, blank drive connected to the card as well waiting to have a mirror image put on it. My problem is this, I go into the card bios on boot and see my two drives. I mark them both and then click on 'create array'. At this point a message pops up saying "creating an array will remove data from your drives." I get scared and abort. Am I wrong in thinking that creating an array (raid 1) should not remove my data from the drive on port 0 but should on port 1? Am I going to lose data on port 0 by creating this array? If so, why? That seems a bit silly. I ask because the manual does really say what's going to happen and appears to be a bit generic. Hai Tom. Maybe someone test your company IP address on abuse.nl and the result is your smtp is open for relaying. Then any other mail server who used RBL and point to abuse.nl database automatically reject all the email come from your smtp. I think you can remove your IP from the list because other database provide this thing (for example http://abuse.net) Be carefull to test your IP for open relay, because some place directly put your IP into their abuse database if the test result is open relay. You can use site like http://members.iinet.net.au/~remmie/relay/ to test open relay without putting the result into abuse database. Kind Regards, M. Thanks again for the suggestion. You've kept me persuing this! After experimenting, then reading the man pages for bash, I found out a couple things. Aliases don't allow for passing arguments. You are supposed to used shell funtions for that. O.K. Now how do I translate my command string into a shell function that works? tardy () { (cd $1; tar cf - .) | (cd $2; tar xpfS - ); } ?????? No. This completely fails, because piping doesn't appear to work in shell functions. (I really didn't expect it would.) In fact, this makes a horrible mess with tar trying to extract back into the source directory structure. Hi all, Like Mr Alderson, I'm looking to start building a box. I'd like it to be multi-processor, but really can't afford to buy 2 CPU's at one time. So, can a dual processor motherboard be run with only one processor installed? I figure this is likely to be a jumper setting or bios option? I also assume both the processors have to be identical - am I right in that? or could I add a faster version of the same type as the first? I figure that the second would then have to run at the same speed as the slower unit in that case, but subsequently a third can be swapped in to replace the slower one. OpenLDAP pam_ldap SuSE 8.2

Dear fellows, I've just upgraded a working SuSE 7.3 to a 8.2 (I've reformated the HD, installed 8.2 from scratch and started configuring). My OpenLDAP is working fine (including TLS, replica, etc) and I can perform a successful "ldapsearch -x 'uid=edgar'" anytime but if I try a 'getent passwd edgar' it returns nothing. I've double-checked /etc/openldap/ldap.conf, /etc/openldap/slapd.conf, /etc/nsswitch and /etc/pam.d/*, I've also tried to use lines like "auth required pam_unix2.so" (seems new to SuSE8.2) or "auth required pam_ldap.so" (the lines I was using in SuSE 7.3) for some services without success: #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_unix2.so account required pam_unix2.so #password required pam_pwcheck.so nullok #password required pam_unix2.so nullok use_first_pass use_authtok session required pam_unix2.so OR #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_ldap.so account required pam_ldap.so #password required pam_pwcheck.so nullok #password required pam_unix2.so nullok use_first_pass use_authtok session required pam_ldap.so It's clear to me that there are more conf files involved in SuSE 8.2 than: /etc/openldap/*, /etc/nsswitch and /etc/pam.d/* but I don't have a clue which files. I've followed SuSE 8.2 docs and edited /etc/security/pam_unix2.conf like sugested in "To use the pam_ldap module, you need to do the following: If you use the default SuSE Linux PAM configuration, you only need to edit /etc/security/pam_unix2.conf and add the "use_ldap" option for account, auth and password management. If you configure LDAP with YaST2, YaST2 will do this for you. Else edit all the /etc/pam.d configurations file to use the pam_ldap module. Look in /usr/share/doc/packages/pam_ldap for examples." I've tried both methods above without sucess (the first seems to be system wide and the second, service specific). I've also tried to use YAST-LDAP-client-configurator and it worked just fine till the next reestart!!! - I've tried YAST again after the first reestart but it didn't work anymore. Could anyone point me some SuSE 8.2 especific documentations (other than /usr/share/doc) and/or all the file names (and their locations) involved. Thanks in advance, José Carlos Stevenson.

The one to get is the IWILL DP533!! I looked over them all. I had an IWILL P3-i860 Dullie that worked flawless. It has PCI-X 133 and PCI-100's. Plus standard PCI, w/ Giga-bit Ethernet. This is the one I have... Plus it allows you to setup the RAM timings where the others won't.. So if you get faster than PC2100 RAM you can tweak it up a bit... Also people have gotten the 2.4 and 2.6(400FSB) CPU's and run them at 533 FSB.. The board will ingnor the FSB if selected... Just watch your cooling solution, but you don't need water, if keeping close to the MHZ of the chip... kaudiocreator quit ripping

Hi, all -- I'm not sure whether or not this is a pure kde question, so I'll ask here, too. I've been using kaudiocreator for a few days and have ripped and encoded a handful of CDs on my SuSE 8.1 system. It isn't Matthias's tweaked LAME, and I have to run it as root to see the disc, but I'm happy enough. This evening, though, it suddenly quit on me. I ripped a CD and it went all the way through but did not encode any of the tracks (whereas it usually starts encoding a track as soon as it is ripped), and now after starting over it will not even rip anything, complaining "unknown protocol: file" in the popup window and telling me "ERROR 3: couldn't create slave" at the command line. I didn't touch anything; I swear :-) I had ripped a couple of CDs right before getting to the "problem" CD and didn't change anything for that one, and now I can't do anything period. Black screen after NVidia update

Hi all, After upgrading my kernel (including the source) with YOU to 2.4.20-100, I have downloaded the NVIDIA Installer for Linux IA32. Subsequently, I followed the instructions in www.suse.de/de/private/download/xfree86/index.html section “SuSE Linux 8.2 with update kernel or self-compiled kernel”. - went to runlevel 3 (by restart in Safe Mode) - did the following : cd /usr/src/linux make cloneconfig && make dep cd /windows/e/Linuxdata/Downloads/nvidia/ (= my download directory) export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run - thus ran the NVIDIA Installer - then I changed /etc/X11/XF86Config section Device: replaced Driver “nv” by Driver “nvidia” (according to the NVidia installation instructions) - went to runlevel 5 --> No more display ! (remains black) !!!! - I solved this by running SaX2 (in Safe Mode) : set Monitor model = LCD 1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz set Color & Resolution = 1024 x 768 - 24 bit After this I had my display back, but no 3D !!!! Looking in XF86Config shows that Driver is set back to “nv” (apparently by SAX2). So .... it seems that setting the driver to "nvidia" ruins my system ? Or , in other words, I think the new NVidia driver is not working correct here. BTW, I'm using a laptop with a 1024x768 LCD screen. What could be the problem ? What speed of cpu are you using and are you using dual cpus? Since this board does not have integrated graphics can you tell me what graphics card you're using? configure error - can't find glib2

Yet another problem with a package not being able to find glib2 on SuSE 8.2. I am trying to build gnomedap, and the configure script gives this error message: checking for GLIB - version >= 2.0.0... no *** Could not run GLIB test program, checking why... *** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the *** exact error that occured. This usually means GLIB is incorrectly installed. configure: error: 2*** GLIB 2.0.0 or better is required. The latest version of *** GLIB is always available from ftp://ftp.gtk.org/. Based on the various gtk/glib threads here, it would certainly appear that SuSE's support of the Gnome environment is pretty bad. They are destined for my address above (only used for SuSE lists) - so I know it is not a compromised PC of one of my friends, they don't know this address. Spamassassin flags them all as spam; and they come from bussineess addressess, with whom I never had bussinesses, like microsoft.com, and many others. I'm wondering if they are people on the adress book of my usual bunch of spammers! Ie, the people hiring the spammers. Serves them well, then. Sendmail service always stop in a period of time when upgrading/patching

Hello all, I am currently running Linux SuSE Professional 8.0. I upgrade/patch sendmail by downloading the sendmail package from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/8.0/n1/sendmail-8.12.3-76.i386.rpm. The command rpm -ihv sendmail-8.12.3-76.i386.rpm does not work, so I use the command rpm -ihv sendmail-8.12.3-76.i386.rpm --force. The problem that I always get is that my sendmail service always down/stop in a period of time. What's the problem? Thanks, Chan Choth

How do I use Gnome if KDE is installed ?

Hello all, I have been using SuSE for awhile but always with kde. Last night I used APT and downloaded and installed (what I figure is all of) James Ogley's Gnome rpms from usr-local-bin. When apts had finished, I rebooted and tried to select gnome from the user log in consol window, but no entry to be found. Would anyone be so kind as to tell what exactly I need to do now in order to log and run SuSE 8.2 using a gnome interface? Computer setup : SuSE 8.2 PRO, KDE 3.1, apt, mozilla evolution,etc ... I seem not to be able to compile gtk apps on my system. Interchange e-commerce program on SuSE

Has anyone installed Interchange on SuSE? We just installed it on a SuSE 8.2 computer for on-line store development purposes (not for production) and although everyting seems to work, we can not get past the initial page on the demo store. Whenever we click on either "customer entrance" or "admin interface" on the initial page, we get the following messages: Requested URL /cgi-bin/foundation/index.html was not found on server Our document root is on /var/www/htm and our cgi-bin is on /var/www/cgi-bin. There is a file named foundation on the cgi-bin directory but it seems it is a compiled perl program, but there are no index.html files on this directory. The installation of the demo store was done using interchange's makecat program as it generates all the required files for the store. I would appreciate any suggestions on this matter. Weird entry in Postfix mail log

Hello folks: Some of my users have had their email addresses harvested by the so.big virus. I am blocking any incoming virus emails now. However I see this entry in my /var/log/mail file: Sep 4 19:31:36 falcon postfix/smtp[21404]: connect to smtp.myrealbox.com[192.108.102.204]: server refused mail service (port 25) Sep 4 19:31:36 falcon postfix/smtp[21404]: 1DEB71C159: to=<oleg_inconnu(a)myrealbox.com>, relay=none, delay=71626, status=deferred (connect to smtp.myrealbox.com[192.108.102.204]: server refused mail service) Is this a connection to my mail server or my mail server being used to attempt to send mail to oleg_inconnu(a)myrealbox.com? I can't believe that any legitimate users of my system would be attempting to send mail to this address. Would this be in indication that my server is compromised? And if so, what tools or resources might I get access to in order to fix any possible compromise? -Thanks

how to change gateway without using YaST?

I'm using SLES8. I want to change gateway on that SuSE without using YaST. I've changed the /etc/sysconfig/network/routes with this entry: default: 192.168.1.254 - - But, after I restart the network device, that entry won't work. My routing table still won't change. Next month sees Linux Expo UK 2003 at Olympia in London. I'm thinking of seeing if I can get a spot on the .ORG stand for usr-local-bin, but because of work commitments, I won't be able to man it for very long. LT winmodem problem

Hello to all! I have recently installed SuSE 8.2 on a Panasonic CF R1 sub-notebook (dual-boot for now, but hoping to get rid of the other OS in due course). Most things are working fine, but unfortunately the modem is a winmodem (not a real modem, I know :) ). From the vendor/device list at www.yourvote.com/pci/ it seems that this is an LT 56k winmodem with a chipset 1456VQH19R-1(INT). uname -r reported that my kernel version is 2.4.20-4GB, so I went to heby/ltmodem/ and downloaded ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_4GB-8.26a9-1.i386.rpm. Then when I do: rpm -i ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_4GB-8.26a9-1.i386.rpm I get the response: Failed dependencies: k_deflt=2,4,20-4GB is needed by ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_4GB-8.26a9-1 What is happening, and what should I do next? [please don't say 'get a different/real modem' :) ] Help please! - and please keep it simple -- this is my first experience with Linux :) best wishes to all, Des Kenny

Solfege uses Gnome2 Python bindings, so it requires the package called python-gnome 1.99.14. I think that package is completely broken, but I'm really not a Python expert, so I'd like to hear other opinions before I report that. There are two major problems: - - During compilation, ./configure complains that gnome-python-2.0.pc is missing. Indeed, the pkgconfig file is absent from /usr/lib/pkgconfig. I had a look at the source RPM package for gnome-python. The file is here, but it is excluded from the binary RPM (i.e. not declared in the specfile). - - So I copied that file to its proper place and compilation succeeded. Then I had a run-time error: the module ui from gnome.ui was missing. Another look at the gnome-python package: that module is there for gtk-1.2 but not for gtk-2.0. And similarly, it seems to be there in the source package, but not declared in the specfile so not installed. Did I miss something, or is SuSE's package miserably broken? Just for info, I got from promise the driver for the Supertrak SX6000 Card running with kernel 2.4.20-64GB-smp, should also run with other intel prozessors. Testet with a Dual-PentiumPro board and the i686 kernel with reiserfs and xfs. Here's the story, the other day I tried sending an email from my office to my linuxmail.org account. A little later I received an email saying: This is the Postfix program at host neuro-logic.com. I'm sorry to have to inform you that the message returned below could not be delivered to one or more destinations. For further assistance, please send mail to <postmaster> If you do so, please include this problem report. You can delete your own text from the message returned below. The Postfix program <twn2(a)linuxmail.org>: host linuxmail-org.mr.outblaze.com[205.158.62.134] said: 554 EMail from mailserver at 4.3.812.158 is refused. See http://spamblock.outblaze.com/4.3.812.158 (in reply to RCPT TO command) So I contacted the company which ended up being abuse.nl.easynet.net and told them that my company has this IP and we're not sending spam. I later get a reply from them saying: Please provide us with at least one of the delisting criteria outlined at http://dynablock.easynet.nl/errors.html. Neither www.neuro-logic.com nor any of neuro-logic.com's mail records point to this IP address, and 4.3.812.158 points to 'lsanca1-812-158.lsanca1.dsl-verizon.net', which is a generic DSL IP address, not different from Verizon's dynamic IP pools. Now, my ISP, Verizon, allows me to use a mailserver. It's not a real mail server, but what I do is use fetchmail to get mail from my webhost then download it to my mail server at the office. Outgoing mail is also sent through my mail server. So I guess they can't see my IP. Does this make sense to anyone? How do I get these yahoos to drop me from a spam list?? Thanks for the input. I just upgraded to SuSE 8.2 from SuSE 7.3, and I was logged in remotely via ssh (actually, at a Starbucks via 802.11.) When I packed up and came home, I noticed that my SuSE system had gone through an orderly shutdown and halt. The system log (/var/messages) looks like this! Hi SuSE folk, I have heard of a set of files for KDE called Edutainment. There is a package in their that is called Stars, an astronomy program I want to install for my wife. Running SuSE 8.2 and checked in their archives, Did not find it. Also tried an apt-getinstall. No luck Was able to Google and found a CVS tar file for Stars. Would rather have the rpm and the whole package. Any ideas/ info?? Bob S.

Remote VNC Desktop Font Problem

We installed a new SuSE 8.2 machine as a web server, and enabled the remote desktop sharing feature to enable us to administer the machine remotely, graphically. When we open up a VNC session on a remote Windows machine, none of the Microsoft fonts we installed seem to be available on the SuSE machine. Checking in Control Center, the Microsoft fonts are indeed installed (and logging in at the SuSE machine's console also has the screen rendering the Microsoft fonts just fine). But no joy when connecting remotely. Our hope is that if we can get the Microsoft fonts to be available over a remote connection to a Windows machine, all text in the VNC session will render more clearly, with less jaggies, since it's the Windows machine doing the rendering. We use a SSH client (Putty) on the remote Windows machine to set up a "local forward". This enables us to have the VNC viewer connect to a display on the Windows workstation (X rendered locally), with all traffic between the SuSE web server and the remote Windows workstation taking place in an encrypted tunnel on the SuSE machine's port 22. problem starting up SuSE 8.1

I was happily using my system, using either WindowsXP or SuSE 8.1, but I was so un-wise to make some changes to the system files through YAST2, and now I can't boot up to Linux anymore. It boots up with a few error messages like not able to set up the local loop, but then hangs on Samba waiting for CUPS to be ready. Is there a way I can skip this step, so I can start to correct my settings again? GRUB still works fine, and I also can boot up WinXP without a problem. Any help is welcome, I am not very advanced with Linux. Regards, Frits

Kernel Compile v2.4.20-SuSE-100

I'm not sure that I've got the kernel version completely right, it's the latest available version from YOU. I compile the kernel and put it in /boot/ as bzImage.Olipro, I create a boot entry in grub but I get an error every time it starts to boot, first error is that the reiserfs module is not found and thus results in a kernel panic that it could not mount root. (I kept it all separate so I wouldn't have to go through a long-winded recovery process in the event something went wrong) just to ensure I'm not doing something wrong, here's the series I follow to compile: bash#: cd /usr/src/linux bash#: make clean # not mandatory I know bash#: make mrproper bash#: make clean # not mandatory I know bash#: make menuconfig # (using SuSE config: CPU changed to Pentium-4) bash#: make dep bash#: vi Makefile # I modify the EXTRAVERSION parameter to -01.Olipro bash#: make bzImage bash#: make modules bash#: make modules_install That's it then I move my bzImage to /boot/ and add an entry to GRUB. Reverse lookups in sendmail

Hi, Any ideas of how to avoid having sendmail trying to do reverse lookup on hosts trying to relay through it? Cause when hosts on my network want to send an email, since I dont have bind installed and we use the DNS servers at our ISP, it takes alot for the MUA to finish talking to the MTA(since you have to wait until the reverse lookup fails (sendmail tries at least 4 times before quiting) and then it sends your email). I am running SuSE 8.1 as an internet gateway for a small network. Recently I've noticed an increased activity on hard disk access on this server which stops when I kill process -:0, which is started by /opt/kde3/bin/kdm. I do not really know what -:0 does but I haven't had any problems killing it. My question is: is this a valid process and then what does it do? Thanks, Carlos

Rejecting email with attachs

Hi, I'm getting an increasing number of spams with attachments that have the .pif extensions. I know they can not harm me (not in Linux), but I would like somehow to not download them (they are a 100 Kbytes each). I'm using fetchmail, postfix, procmail, spamassassin and AMaViS (which doesn't detect them, by the way). All of it from the default SuSE 8.2 with you patches. I'm thinking, perhaps, of some thing in /etc/postfix/header_checks, or something else perhaps. It is only needed for one address. I think it has beeing commented here, but I can not remember it now. Perhaps I'm tired tonight :-) [...] It is even worse. Now I'm getting autoresponses form postmasters. One complains that I sent a subscriber the virus "W32/Sobig.f@MM" - which I didn't, the headers returned says I used outlook X-) . Another postmaster autoreject complains that the recipient box is full - and returns to me the 100Kb attachment. Heck. Who configured that, I wonder? Grub help...need to change from hda to sda

I've just installed a 3ware raid card, copied, via dd, an old IDE drive to a new drive attached to the raid card and now need to know how to change grub to point to the new drive. Here's what my current grub.conf says on the new drive: root (hd0,1) install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/stage1 d (hd0) /boot/grub/stage2 0x8000 (hd0,1)/boot/grub/menu.lst quit I believe I should change the hd0 to sd0....correct? Once I do that, do I need to do something else to get it to setup properly? I changed my fstab already on the new drive. My experience is that once the firewall is activated I am unable to mount my home area and other exported drives. Problems with getting scsi to detect with 3ware raid card

I bought a 3ware 7000-2 raid card and I'm trying to setup raid 1. I bought a new drive to match my existing drive. Tonight I dd my existing drive to my new drive. I managed to boot the new drive from my IDE port just fine (taking into account I removed my existing drive first). My problem is that I can't get the new drive to be seen my Suse 8.2 thru my 3ware card. I connect my old drive to IDE1 and connect my new drive to my raid card on slot 0. My raid card is picked up and I can see a drive on it during boot, but I can't access it once I'm logged in. I haven't made any entries to my fstab so there are no sda devices listed. I think this is my problem. What entry should I make into my fstab so that I can see the drive? Currently I have /dev/hdc1 and /dev/hdc2 from which I boot off of. One more thing, I get the following error during the boot process: kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno=2 Does that mean anything? Thanks, Tom

Searching for infofile.....

Forgive me if this has been asked here recently but I have searched the archives only to come up with one reference that dates back to 7.3. I am trying to do a clean install over a 7.3 machine with a scsi raid system and scsi cdrom. The cd's won't boot in the scsi cdrom 1 or 2 so I created the boot floppy and modules 1-4 disks. It comes up fine where it asks what I want to do I choose installation and it loads the kernel 50% and then asks for the modules 1 disk and that goes fine then it pops over to the console looking screen and a bunch of stuff flashes by and then it says starting hardware detection... then searching for infofile .... and hangs there. I have tried this with installation, installation no acpi and installation safe settings and it all does the same thing. Any ideas? Rob

autofs ldap bugs

Hello, I have been told by SuSE support that they will not support this problem in their base system so I am hopping that someone here can answer the problem or pass it on to someone at SuSE who won't just write it off as unsupported. We have an ldap server at work hosting user accounts and automount settings. It has worked fine for a while now, with both Redhat and Debian clients..but SuSE is another story completelly. Running /etc/init.d/autofs status returns the list of automount points correctly as follows: Configured Mount Points: ------------------------ /usr/sbin/automount /home ldap:ou=auto.home,dc=optitech,dc=com /usr/sbin/automount /optitech ldap:ou=auto.optitech,dc=optitech,dc=com But, after starting autofs (it claims to be successfull) I see the following error in /var/log/messages: automount[2058]: starting automounter version 3.1.7, path = /home, maptype = ldap:ou=auto.home,dc=optitech,dc=com, mapname = none automount[2058]: cannot open lookup module ldap:ou=auto.home (/usr/lib/autofs//lookup_ldap:ou=auto.home.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) automount[2060]: starting automounter version 3.1.7, path = /optitech, maptype = ldap:ou=auto.optitech,dc=optitech,dc=com, mapname = none automount[2060]: cannot open lookup module ldap:ou=auto.optitech (/usr/lib/autofs//lookup_ldap:ou=auto.optitech.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) Now, it seems to be trying to open the lookup_ldap.so module, but what's with that :ou=auto.home string thrown into there? Works in Windoze, NOT in SuSE!?!?!?!?!?!?

pppd keeps receiving a (SIGHUP) (exit code = 16) and drops. I get dropped as quick as 30 seconds, and CANNOT get past 59.4 minutes, EVER. I'm using 8.1 with KDE 3.1.1, with a U.S. Robotics 56K Performance Pro V.92 PCI modem, which is fully supported (modem drivers are in kernel 2.3 and higher). I manually start/stop my connection with WVDial or KInternet. I rewired the phone line, put the modem in a new slot, removed nearby electrical equipment, contacted the ISP, tested on 3 different phone networks, used wvdialconf to setup the modem, added additional codes to the init string when the wvdialconf string didn't fix the problem, dropped my firewall, and the list goes on, and on. Then I remembered I still had a partition with WindozeME on it. Set up the modem in windoze. When I checked the configuration, I found the init string was different. I added two more codes to the string in windoze, and tested it out. - Strange thing - I started several small downloads (12M total), and let it run. I was able to download the files, then stayed idle for a total of 5 hours before my ISP dropped me!!! Tried it again in windoze (to see if I could do it again), this time with a 78M file. Again!!! 5 hours went by before my ISP dropped me, and before the whole file was downloaded, which meant no idle time. - Stranger thing - Great! (right?) So I booted into SuSE, changed the init string to the SAME one I had success with in windoze (because the previous one wvdialconf set didn't work). Then I tested it the same way I did in windoze. pppd received a (SIGHUP) at 33.1 minutes and died, and then again at 26.6 minutes and died. Afterward, I tried it again in windoze, and got the same 5 hours before my ISP dumped me. WHY does it work it in windoze and not SuSE?????????? And HOW can I fix this problem????????? I can talk to my ISP, or even change ISP's, about the 5 hour dump from them. BUT, I have no idea how to fix what is going on with the (SIGHUP) in linux, and there's no problem in Windoze!?!?!? Hi, I work for company that uses windows almost exclusively, and Novell Netware to do the network stuff. About a year ago I started using Linux, and currently I am using a dual boot system on my desktop PC. I get a lot more done on Linux, but there are some things that hold me back. Firstly printing: I can't seem to get the network printer configured. We have a NDPS printing setup. I seems simple in Yast, but it needs a print server IP address, and I have no idea how get that (our IT department doesn't even know, go figure). Any ideas on how I can figure out the IP for the Novell print server that I am using from windows. It is not shown anywhere in the printer configuration. Second Internet: My company uses a proxy server for internet browsing, and that is the only way out. You have to be authorised to use the internet though, and this is done when you log into the Novell Network. Since I don't log on to the Novell Network in Linux, I am not authorised, and the proxy kicks me out. Any ideas about this? The third was mail. We are using Groupwise, which only works with Groupwise clients. Luckily Groupwise Linux client just went into Beta testing, and I'm trying it out now. Couldn't get it to work yet though. Synaptic & new kernel don't get along

OK... here's the story... Originally, I tried to install the latest kernel (2.4.21-59) from mantel-kernel via Synaptic. However, Synaptic wouldn't do it because it fails a dependency. The kernel package needs rpmlib 4. Now, I know that SuSE's rpm has no problem with version 4 packages so, I went to SuSE's ftp site and, following the instructions in mantel, downloaded and installed the kernel using the --nodeps option. Everything went fine. The kernel is working very well. Unfortunately, now when I want to use Synaptic to upgrade a package or install a new one, Synaptic insists that the new kernel has to be removed. I don't want to remove the kernel and yet, I don't want to stop using Synaptic. Right now, I can't use it without removing the kernel. Help! Is there anyway for me to tell Synaptic not to remove the kernel? I've tried going into Programmed Changes and telling it to keep the package but it doesn't work. What can I do?? TIA, Rick

Wireless Speedtouch 570 and 120: suggestions?

KWord spelling check not working

I have just upgraded my SuSE8.2 to KDE3.1.3 and Koffice to 1.2.92 using APT and Synaptic. All went very smoothly, except that the spelling checker does not work in KWord. It is set up for Dictionary: English (United Kingdom), ISO 8859-1, and ASpell as it was previously. But when I try to spell check, nothing happens. I have also tried ISpell as the "Client", but that doesn't work either. Also I have tried various selections in "Dictionaries" and US-ASCII in "Encoding" ASpell works as a stand-alone version. If I try to spell check in other KOffice applications, they crash with a sig11 fault. Kmail spell checks correctly. Has anyone else had this little problem, please? I know a dictionary is not vital, but it is useful to have. Many thanks Keith

Now that I am stable and playing around...I have been looking into things to do with Gnome. Has anyone used gDesklets? http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ Is there a way to install this via apt or should I just follow the instructions on the site? Desktop Problems after upgrading to KDE 3.1.3

After upgrading to KDE 3.1.3, my desktop was pretty hosed. I kept a copy of all my desktop shortcuts, so that was no problem. But now susewatcher is gone, and the panel will not show multiple desktops. I really need multiple desktops. Any ideas how to get this back? Question about specific desktop/window manager/style/theme used in snapshot

I found this today looking at skins for mplayer 1.0pre. I tried to contact the skin's owner but his mailbox is full. Does anyone know what desktop/window manager this is? What style or theme? Is it stable? I think it might be gnome (1.x or 2.0?) with Enlightenment but I am unsure. Any help would be appreciated. I tried to include the file as an attachment but it was too big and bounced. SuSe 8.2 and Netlock VPN installation

I am trying to connect to my companies VPN network with no luck. Netlock does not offically support SuSe, but does support Redhat 8.0. I performed a test install of Redhat 9.0 and the Netlock VPN client on a machine. I was able to connect sucessfully to the network. On SUSE 8.2, the software installs correctly and loads the kernel modules properly. I can connect to the VPN network, but cannot ping any devices on the other side. I have removed the SuSeFirewall2 software and checked everything I know. Once connected to the VPN a netstat -nr is virtually identical between the Redhat and SuSe boxes. Also netstat -vat greping for the ports and IP's in question are also the same. The only strange behavior I have notices is from time to time , root gets the following message. Kernel IP routing table -bash: Kernel: command not found There is nothing in the message log about this. I also removed the patched kernel and sources, then re-installed them the originals from the CD. Thanks

Virus and IMAP on Linux?

Hello everybody, I run a postfix/Cyrus IMAP mail server and a webmail program called V-Webmail which is a typical web mail interface program that speaks IMAP. Some of my users, who should only by accessing their mail via the IMAP web interface appear to be getting bounces indicating that they are sending out the virus messages, you know, the ones with the *.pif file and subject lines of "Thank You!" and "My Details" etc. Obviously, these mails are being forged. Question is, does anybody know if IMAP users are vulnerable to this thing? I do have a user who may have accessed his mail via POP and Outlook Express. I'm guessing that may be how this starting. The virus was able to get his addressbook. ?? Also, anybody know how one might go about stopping the forged mails? What little I know about this stuff, I'd think not.. but then again I don't know.. :-) -Jim-

BlackDown Package Missing from 8.2 Personal?

According to the Suse 8.2 Personal package list ( found at http://www.suse.de/us/private/products/suse_linux/i386/packages_personal/in… ), BlackDown is supposed to be there. But I am unable to find this package at every one of the Suse ftp sites I've tried (including ftp.suse.com!) Also, the Sun java package is nowhere to be found either. Does anyone know what the story is here? Or am I missing something somewhere? It seems kind of silly to include so many packages that require a JRE (i.e. tomcat) without including a JRE package.

APT Force install

I am having a problem upgrading libdvdnav via apt-get install libdvdnav. It gives the error that it conflicts with the previously installed libdvdnav. Does anyone no of a switch to add to the end of the line to get it to force install? Thanks! NeoFax

I followed the latest "how-to" post for upgrading. I downloaded aAll the files into a directory, changed installation source, and let Yast2 do an upgrade (only installed packages). When it finished I logged out of KDE and restarted it. Or rather, tried to. All "startx" would do is bring up FVWM! Then when I finally got KDE to start, the root desktop was totally hosed. My user desktop was almost salvagable, but had the missing virtual desktops, susewatcher, and some other misc. stuff. As far as I could tell, susewatcher was gone completely - I did a search for It and came up empty. Thanks for the info on adding "Pager". I would have never guessed that that was for the virtual desktops. What I finally did was use Yast2 to completely uninstall KDE. Then I renamed my .kde, .kderc, .mcop and .mcoprc files/directories. I then renamed Desktop to OldDesktop. I also renamed .DCOPserver_computername__0. Then I started FVWM and called up Yast2 and reinstalled KDE. Now I'm finally back to something like normal. after saving my system from a bad recompiled kernel, I had a recap and looked at the Nvidia HOWTO and noticed some instructions for people with SuSE 9.0 Beta. GPA problem

I used to use GPA to manage my GnuPG keyring. However, having moved to a new PC, I have problems. GPA appears not to recognise anything on my system - it ignores my existing ~/.gnupg directory and hence my keyring, and fails to create its own keys when I move this directory out of the way (it claims to have succeeded but nothing appears on disc). What puzzles me is that everything used to work on my old PC, and GnuPG is working fine on the new computer. It's just GPA. Unfortunately, this is by far the easiest to use and most capable GUI for GnuPG I've seen. SuSE 8.2, installing GPA from the DVD. Try using the mic in a terminal. Just do a 'man record' and you'll get all the info you need to try it this way, it even has recording level meters. I've found with 8.2, that for some reason, after a reboot sometimes my mic isn't recognized, and have to reboot once or twice more until it is, then I can record just fine (thus once everything's running the way I want it, I *never* reboot again, unless I have to do a kernel or video thing). As for GnomeMeeting, there's rpm(s) for it from a link or two on the GnomeMeeting website, made just for SuSE...this is the one I got and installed and it works perfectly for me (make sure you get the other two things listed there also). Konqueror dead forever??

That out of the way: Somehow, my bookmarks - all of them - got dropped down into the bookmarks toolbar. I didn't intend this, but it happened. So I started to try to recover it. Right now, the bookmarks are *STILL* on the bookmarks toolbar - and I have *NO* menu in Konqueror. Things have been going from bad to worse at an exponential rate. I don't want to lose my bookmarks - but Konqueror is pretty much useless right now. I can switch to Mozilla and assume that I've got a completely dead piece of software - but that seems rather silly and extreme. Does anyone have any ideas how to recover? YAST2 - Edit and Create Users

Good day, We are a school with ±650 users. We use SuSE 8.2, (very recently auto patched) with Yast2-2.7.30-1 I am experiencing the following error when running Yast2 > Security and Users > Edit and Create Users or Edit and Create Groups: The script halts with the following error: "Cannot read system user settings" This happened with a previous installation when I created users from the command line and from within Yast2. It has happened again, although I only use the command line and run /sbin/SuSEconfig frequently. I have searched many documentation sources to no avail. hello, I'm trying to install freeswan on suse 8.1 but I keep getting an error saying KLIPS isn't working: Checking your system to see if IPsec was installed and started correctly Version check and ipsec on-path [OK] Checking for KLIPS support in kernel [FAILED] Checking for RSA private key (/etc/ipsec.secrets) [OK] Checking that pluto is running [OK] DNS checks. Looking for forward key for linux [FAILED] Does the machine have at least one non-private address [OK] linux:~ # I installed the freeswan package from the CD's, it says it includes the KLIPS support. I installed this about a year ago on another machine, I recall it was very easy...just loading 2 or 3 packages and it started working. I looked on the suse support site but couldn't find anything with the keywords vpn, freeswan or klips. Does anyone recall what is the procedure for getting this to work using the CD packages? Default Gateway and Wireless Card

Hi: Using SuSE 8.2 and CableFree PCMCIA card. I now have my wireless network working. I found I needed to set the deafault gateway by hand, which was not needed by the cabled network. The man page for route says I need to run the command "route add default gw 192.168.1.1" which is the IP address of my server and gateway. The problem is that I have to run this by hand everytime I turn on my notebook. Yast2 does not seem to offer an option to do this, and a google search did not turn out any relevant results. Hey Group; After the recent reload for my SuSE 8.2 CDs (with no upgrades or patches) I am getting a list of errors during boot about various rpmorigs. Any clues as to what it means? What is RPM/SuSE looking for? The file appear to be text (good news). Are these errors from the CD load, whats loaded or need to be configured notes. k3b 0.10 finally compiles OK under SuSE 8.2 but kde dies ...

Hello all I finally managed to compile tonights CVS version of k3b-0.10 under SuSE 8.2 after downloading and installing the gcc files from http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~verdimar/gcc-3.3-suse8.2/ as suggested by James Ogley? (Thank you James!) Linux: # rpm -qa | grep gcc libgcc-3.3-43 gcc-c++-3.3-43 gcc-g77-3.3-43 gcc-3.3-43 gcc-info-3.3-43 gcc-objc-3.3-43 gcc-java-3.3-43 Note: I that I running kde 3.1.3 which I install rpm by rpm using apt-get.... The problem I have now is that kde 3.1.3 dies when I run BURN. Double ugh! I already had the problem of kde dying before using k3b before and I solved it my changing the version of qt3 Here's my version of qt3 rpm -qa | grep qt3 qt3-3.2.0b1-6 qt3-devel-3.2.0b1-6 Does anyone know what version of qt3 is required for k3b-0.10 under KDE3.1.3??? What version of qt3 are you using ? I tried to install qt3-3.1.1-71 but doing so would create mega dependancy problems. Can anyone out there please help me? TIA James

Brand New System ! (Was :: No more XD2, now I have etc)

After everything I went through to try to get the system to stabilize, it finally got to the point where nothing would work (at all) so I decided to reinstalled the 8.2 system via ftp. It seems someone should put a warning label out there for those newbies considering the installation of Ximain XD2 and red carpet. I hope I am not wrong in thinking that those utilities are the reason my machine died? Now for my real questions. 1. Now that I have a clean system, how exactly should I go about installing apt and after I install apt, should I never use Yast2 again? 2. I selected Gnome in the resinstallation. What is the difference between ULB GNOME 0.3.2 and the Gnome that comes with 8.2?

Trying to run a program built on a later version of Linux

I'm currently running SuSE-7.3. I have engineering programs that prevent me from upgrading to SuSE-8.X at this time. I have another program that appears to have been built on a later version of Linux. It claims to need: libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.3) ld.so says libstdc++.so.5 needs it. Near as I can tell, the libc.so.6 I have is GLIBC_2.2. Is this a system specific library? (i.e. I can't upgrade it w/out upgrading the system?) -Gerry linux(a)darykon.cet.com

cannot open ftp site

Hello, I'm running Suse 8.2, KDE 3.1.1 and konqui as my web browser. I can access all internet web pages just fine with konqui except for ftp:// sites. After a while of loading page (eg. ftp://ftp.suse.de/) i get 'Can not connect to localhost'. Other utils, such as Kbear work fine, it is just konqui that cannot access ftp pages. Hi, when YOU starts with 'Getting patch information', about halfway it says: Error Signature check for patch info files fails. Cannot load patch information. Details: Patch: k_deflt-36077 No way to proceed. Updating k_deflt from the SuSE update site makes no difference. Any idea what's going on? SH

After following the directions for adding fonts to Suse 7.3 I find they are not available in Star Office. In the control panel section I did check the box for setting up star office but nothing happened. Do I need to directly edit a script or force SO to reinitialize itself using the added fonts. Does anyone know how to print email messages in Mozilla 1.4 without including the header as part of the printed text? If not is there a way to get the mail program to let you print only selected text? Printing only selected text is available in the web browser and email composer but not in the mail browser. 8.2 lilo and intel 1000 nic

Hello fellow Susers, I have managed to install SuSE 8.2 on my Asys P4c800-E DLX motherboard using the onboard Promise controller at RAID 1 (ide hdd's). I also have a sata HDD on the Intel ICH5 R controller. LILO was installed on /dev/sda1. My problem is how to be able to dual boot between linux and Win XP . The win xp disk of course is as good as non existennt for linux. I am now dual booting through changing the boot priority of the HDD's in the BIOS. Is this the only way to do it? I have also been unable to make the Intel Gigabyte NIC work . What module should I load? Thanks in advance for your help! Josef

This is what I have just done ... 1. As a user became root (su) and typed 'init 3'. 2. Logged in as root and typed 'startx'. This took me to KDE 3.1.1 3. Opened a terminal and typed 'synaptic'. 4. In synaptic I clicked on the "update List" after that was finished I clicked on the "distribution upgrade" icon.. and then proceed. 5. Once the distro upgrade was complete, I rebooted to see if anything would change. I got the gdm at runlevel 5 but when I chose gnome as the session, it booted me to kde anyway. 6. I went back and ran synaptic again, this time choosing everything gnome (ulb) there was to install/upgrade. When executing rpm (Uvh) this install gave extra output that I have no idea what it is. What to do now? If I could find a way to make backups of my evolution and document directories to my CDR via cli .. I think I would do that and simply reinstall SuSE 8.2 at this point. Unfortunately I don't know how to make such a backup and I think this is a learning experience for me and Linux. Gcc3.3.1 static variables issue

Hello list I have ask it on another list but there was no answer. So I will try it here. I have upgraded to the new gcc3.3.1 from the SuSE ftp site my box (SuSE 8.2) and I tried to compile mplayer but it does not succeded. The compilation went just fine, but there was a problem with the linker. It seems that if a variable/function is declared static it does not see it resulting in an undefined reference. I have upgraded the following packages: cpp-3.3.1-0.i586.rpm gcc-c++-3.3.1-0.i586.rpm libstdc++-3.3.1-0.i586.rpm gcc-3.3.1-0.i586.rpm libgcc-3.3.1-0.i586.rpm libstdc++-devel-3.3.1-0.i586.rpm Do I have to install some other package? "Failed" message in startup

Yast2 from the console problem

Hey SuSE folks; Again I wish to let you know that there is a problem with Yast2 mounting CDs correctly. During a "Install and Remove Software" Yast asks for a CD #? and then complains that it is not the correct CD. Problem is that the CD has not been mounted. If I manually mount it Yast is happen and will do as I requested. This happens for sure as a console and may also happen in X. Hey Group; I am trying to convert some people to Linux. As a person that has not used Windows in over eight years I am not certain of the current limitations of Windows when compared to Linux. I know of its basic headaches like crash, poor memory usage, lack of reasonable security, virus problems and license cost. I hear most often concerns about linux - "lack of help". I normally reply with "When was the last time you emailed Bill Gates and got a answer? I have emailed an heard from just about any Linux software maintainer I have ever emailed in less than a day". However, I am in need of some of you that use or used Windows and know of its less obvious problems to add to my "Linux Benefits" list. If possible seperate into versions - 9x, ME, XP, NT/2K and their Sever systems. (Not to mention Microsoft "Services for UNIX 3.0"). spammers attached to the SuSE list

For several months now, I have posted to this group from time to time, and I have noticed that as soon as I post, there is an attempt to spam me immediately upon my post. This happens on *every* post, within a fraction of a second of posting, so it is not coincidental. This comes not from the list group per se, but from some spammers who have attached themselves or subscribed to the list, and run small scripts directing their spam upon a post, or at least mine. These are taken from my SMTP logs. Initially, it came from one source, mail-in3.tiscali.be:62.235.13.190, and this has been going on for months. and now he has a brother mail-in1.tiscali.be:62.235.13.191 Notice two separate attempts from 2 different IPs. Now, we also have new.. forward.012.net.il:80.179.100.86 Let us not forget the latest and newest spam addition from tw... dsl.pl.apol.com.tw:218.187.133.220 All have and will continue to be blocked at the SMTP level, but I mention this to the list so that you can do the same., I have noticed this on other lists, but now with 4 spammers attached on this list, as of this morning, I thought I would make mention of it. 62.235.13.0/24 80.179.100.86 218.187.133.220 -- Gary

Anyone know where I can find the source or home page for xspread? I am running 8.2Pro and I got the RPM from 7.3 from the SuSE FTP site and it works, but it must be very old. I have googled, and though I can find many references to xspread, none of them take me to a homepage for it. I have some old files that I'd like to be able to access with it and know if it's even still being maintained. If not, I guess I'll have to try to print to PS the tables I have and live with that... NVidia on 8.2 Help

Found this info on a support list and am passing it along for those still having problems. Did it all from a terminal window and rebooted into safe mode for the install. Works great now. Hope it helps. 1) Kernel sources must be installed and configured. Usually this means installing the 'kernel-source' RPM with YaST2 and configure it then with the following commands: cp /boot/vmlinuz.config /usr/src/linux/.config cp /boot/vmlinuz.version.h /usr/src/linux/include/linux cp /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h /usr/src/linux/include/linux cd /usr/src/linux make cloneconfig dep 2) Use the nvidia installer. export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run 3) Enable 3D support with SaX2.

ADSL Question

I am about to terminate my ISDN 64Kbps connection and get an ADSL 384 or maybe 512. The ADSL will have a static IP and I will be able to have a 24/7 connection up and running. In addition I will also make a web page and publish it (with apache). Currently my Linux PC which does all the internet-work is a P-II 350 with 256MB ram and 2x40GB drives. It is running SuSE7.2. The ISP gave me a list of minimum requirements that the PC which will have the ADSL connection must meet. Among them he requests a P-III 450 as a minimum for the CPU. Is this necessary for Linux?? The minimum reqs supplied by the ISP are concerning a PC running Windows. Do you think that I should follow the ISP's minimum recommendation or will the machine that I am currently occupying suffice?? Thank you for your help on this one. Chris

IP6 - slow browsing

I have just upgraded suse8.1 to 8.2. One effect was to give me very slow browsing, looking like slow dns lookup. That is downloads were full speed (60k ish) once they were started, but changing to a new page could give a 20sec pause. After some googling I found I needed to "turn off ip6" by changing which of these lines was commented in etc/modules.conf #alias net-pf-10 ipv6 alias net-pf-10 off This worked and I am now back to normal. Can anyone tell me what this line does, and exactly what I have turned off? (or which manual I should read) Thanks David

Spamc, lock files and kmail

I don't use fetchmail, procmail etc (at least nothing that I've configured) , just lowly kmail to download and read my mail. (don't have time or the need to learn about fetchmail, procmail etc, right now). I set up a filter in kmail to use spamc to sort out spam mails and its working well - except for the horrible slowdown while spamc does its job. I've read the spamassasin docs but I don't see any info about how to setup a "lock" file, especially in conjunction w/ kmail. Can this be done with kmail? If so how. No more XD2 ...Almost done.. now I have no X

OK.. so.. I did a google for 'removing XD2 from Linux' or something like that and I found that the best way to do it was to use red carpet. 1. I removed everything under the XD2 channel and closed red carpet. 2. I ran apt-get update && apt-get upgrade and didn't see any errors. 3. I ran apt-get install evolution and didn't see any errors. Everything seemed to work like a charm. 4. I tried to start Evolution and got a dialog box that looked like an error with no text in it. 5. I tried to run mozilla.. same thing. 6. I tried to use Konquerer and kept getting an unsupported protocol http error. 7. So I logged out and rebooted the machine (still a little windows mentality there I suppose; if someone tells me that I shouldnt have done that and that is the reason I have lost everything, I will be up all night kicking my own a$$) 8. When the machine came back up I logged in and typed startx and it is telling me that startx isn't there. What do I need to do now?

mozilla crashing in 8.2

I've been having problems with Mozilla crashing on machines I've loaded with 8.2. It may be happening when a plug-in is run. I say this because it crashes only on sites with lots of advertising like www.weather.com. I tried Mozilla 1.4 from Mozilla.org but still have the problem. This problem doesn't happen with Mozilla 1.2 on SuSE 7.2.

Following up to a previous thread: We are looking to go forward and start with a 64bit linux implementation of (parts of) our software . The next question is, which hardware platfrom should we start with ? Eventually we will likely be supporting both itanium2 and opteron, but initially we'd like to start with just one platform. Does anyone know where i can find figures on market uptake for both types ? SusSE 8.1 disabling write barriers

Anyone has a good 10/100Mbit card to recomend for a SuSE7.2 PC?? I currently have an Rtl8139 and it is just pissing me off because it cannot get any higher than 4Mbit transfer rate!!! Any suggestion for a PCI Network card to run @ 100 mbit is deeply appreciated! Chris

Toshiba Portege and Dual Head Display

A friend of mine who has been using Windows on his laptop is trying to switch to Linux on the desktop (Yeay!). He is using debian. The one big problem we can't overcome is setting up dual head on the laptop so that he can use both the laptop screen and an external 17" LCD. The set up already works unders WinXP. The chipset is from trident. Has anyone done this with a laptop, especially a toshiba portege? It would be nice to know whilst we are bashing our heads against a brick wall that this is solveable. I have partly a question and partly a survey. I just got a P4 2.4ghz (c) proc, mb w/ 512M DDR400 dropped in my lap at work so I could upgrade my workstation in the office. It does have hyperthreading. I've never user HT hardware and I've heard conflicting reports about it. I have it turned off right now and I haven't installed the SMP kernel since I'm not sure I'm going to bother. I guess my question is...for a workstation doing webbrowsing, documents in OO, Gaim, playing mp3's and s**tloads of xterms. Does HT give or take away from the enviroment as far as speed and all that. Two APT questions

I have a lot of packages in my /var/cache/apt/archives folder. I would like APT to install them all on a new SuSE installation on another hard drive rather than downloading them all again. So I burnt them on to a CD. I then copied them on to the new hard drive, keeping the same path. However, I can't get APT on the new hard drive to install them. If I reselect all these packages with Synaptic, it wants to download them all again, not look in the folder. How can I get APT to look in the folder and just install them from there? I have tried "rpm --rebuilddb" but that hasn't solved it. An associated question: Does APT make a log of what it downloads? I think it must do. For example, if 8 packages are marked in Synaptic for downloading and the download is interrupted after only a few have been downloaded, if these same 8 packages are later marked again for the download to be resumed, those already downloaded are skipped, but they are all installed. I can't find where it logs what it is doing. Perhaps there is one (simple?) answer for both questions? Any help will be gratefully received. Many thanks Keith

how do I get rid of XD2

I am using XD2 but I really don't see the benefit of it. I think Gnome was just as good if not better. I know Ximian is based on Gnome but it seems that there is no advantage to having one over the other. The only good thing I have seen from Ximian is perhaps evolution. So, after much consideration, I have decided that I would like to purge XD2 Desktop and put my system back like it was, so that I can use apt to upgrade my gnome packages the right way? I want to keep evolution 1.4.4 but that is about it. 1. Am I on the right track? 2. How do I go about doing this? Thanks, -=Thinker

Internet via ADSL router and via dial up possible on same system?

Hello! My notebook needs to get connected to the Internet via an ADSL router when I'm in the office. No problem, I just set up the default gateway to the router's IP and it works. However when I travel I use an Internet dial up connection (kinternet or kppp). But that does not work when the default gateway is still set to the router's IP in the office. So I have to take out the default gateway every time I use dial up connections, and reenter it when I use the router. And while I'm at it, it is probably a good idea to do the same for the DNS entries required by the ADSL connection. How can I configure kppp or kinternet (using Suse 8.2) to do that automatically for me? Thanks, Matt

Hey Group; I seemed to have fixed the gcc 3.3 problem here. On a very fresh installed from CDs. I have a previous config floppy "user.sel" file. So no changes to the reload. I did find that previously I did not select "binutils". This time I did select them and now thing seem to work. So maybe the default selection of binutils was not done and the dependencies missed it. But life is beautiful again. I'm using K-mail and the other day I recieved an e-mail that seemed to be nothing but a header. I was reading the SuSE-E list today and found the same thing agian. I was able to read the message by having the sender try my other address which used pine. spammers to the suse list

I have to think that you're getting your spam from somewhere else. I don't get any. (So far, and I've been on the list for years.) I don't open unknown attachments, and frankly, I usually use Windows and Eudora.) I also, in Windows, use a pop-up killer. I use Netscape as a browser, and I don't go to porn sites. I normally go only to reference sites, or places that sell what I want to buy, like computer parts, clothes, etc. And Google. That's where I find the other sites. I will go back and use more Linux when I get the ambition to make a new machine. It's just too slow on this old 160 MHz machine. (So is Windows.) If I got a batch of spam to this list, I guess I would get off it. I hate spam, and I especially hate porn spam. I might even change my internet supplier, if it got ridiculous. --doug, wa2say

Hi, Any info, docs about how to setup a SuSE cluster based on 8.2 or 8.1 ? Is there any mailing list within SuSE regarding this subject ? Under Yast2 there is no Cluster Selection to easy see what software comes for cluster solution. Maybe a good tip for SuSE to add a cluster solution under Yast2 ! Many thanks stefan
