Which program creates .xvpics?
Hi, Which program is it that creates .xvpics directories with thumb images? I have some of these directories, but I'm unsure of which program creates it, and7or under what conditions. And I have a directory full of png files for which there are no .xvpics dir, no matter what I use to view it - I think. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

xv, XV is an interactive image viewer for the X Window System. The XV program displays images in the GIF, JPEG, TIFF, PNG, PBM, PGM, PPM, X11 bitmap, Utah Raster Toolkit RLE, PDS/VICAR, Sun Rasterfile, BMP, PCX, IRIS RGB, XPM, Targa, XWD, possibly PostScript, and PM formats on workstations and terminals running the X Window System, Version 11. The XV program is also apable to manipulate pictures. It can zoom in and out, rotate, and flip them. It also provides a wide variety of operations to modify colors. One of the most famous programs under Linux. You will find the documentation in /usr/share/doc/packages/xv/. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

Ah, yes, true: I just tried. But it doesn't seem to do it for the full directory, only single files on request. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

I think it is konqueror. This way it is able to present you the previews. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

No Konqueror doesn't use .xvpics. Konqueror thumbnails are stored in .thumbnails. Charles -- "...Unix, MS-DOS, and Windows NT (also known as the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly)." (By Matt Welsh)

I thought the xvpics directories were created by GIMP. Every time you navigate in GIMP, to either 'Open' or 'Save' an image; it builds previews of the images already contained therein. Right? -- Thomas Jones Linux-Howtos Network Administrator OpenGPG Key: 0x6A3DF6E9

Right?
The original program that creates and uses .xvpics is XV. However, several other programs can create and/or use it. Gimp is an example of a program that create thumbnails in .xvpics. GQview an example of a program that can use it, if you enable it in its preferences. Charles -- "...and scantily clad females, of course. Who cares if it's below zero outside" (By Linus Torvalds)

Yes, it is one of the programs I use, and I thought that was the one. But for some reason, it doesn't create thumb images in two directories I have, where the images are about 10 Mb png files. I don't know how to control that... Ah, I see now. I got them created now! It is under the buttom "Windows", menu "visual schnauzer" (whatever that means: jdictionary says it means "schnauzer" {recursive: see recursive}) , and then "rescan". I get a nice window with thumb images, and the directory ".xvpics/" got created and filled with about 5 Kb thumb images, and that is precissely what I wanted: I wanted to email those, instead of the big files ;-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
