Hi all, Like Mr Alderson, I'm looking to start building a box. I'd like it to be multi-processor, but really can't afford to buy 2 CPU's at one time. So, can a dual processor motherboard be run with only one processor installed? I figure this is likely to be a jumper setting or bios option? I also assume both the processors have to be identical - am I right in that? or could I add a faster version of the same type as the first? I figure that the second would then have to run at the same speed as the slower unit in that case, but subsequently a third can be swapped in to replace the slower one. I currently run a dual cpu system, started out with one and added another when I could afford it. Most likely the newer MB's can also run with one at first. The ASUS MB that I have required that both be the same speed but you need to check the one you purchase for that requirement. Buy the fastest one you can afford at first, by the time you afford the second one the price will have dropped. Ken

Also make sure you don't wait too long before adding a second CPU. I don't think you'll be able to run CPUs of different speeds as the multipliers are locked these days (unless you want to tinker with them to unlock them). The one you first bought might not be available any more later. Example, I bought an AthlonXP 1800+ in January this year. It was one of the faster ones available at the time. The "slowest" AMD chip on the local market right now is a 2000+ Hans
