Did that, although from reading the autosync docs it looks like that's for sound problems rather than video, which is the reverse of my troubles.
The autosync maybe for the sound but the -cache is for the video
% % Also before playing the movie enable the rtc like this % su -c "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq" % su -c "chmod 644 /dev/rtc"
Did this, too.

Don't know how to do this :-( This is a Toshiba Satellite 1135 laptop with a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. Any suggestions?
You can enable it in YAST2 go to Hardware->IDE DMA Mode make sure that the DMA mode is on for the CD-ROM
% % I hope this helps
Perhaps it's a start. Thanks, anyway!

Oh, how I miss the [windows-based] performance of my Toshiba Tecra 8000 with its dedicated hardware MPEG decoder! That machine could do anything you wanted with your DVD and still not get in the way of doing work! :-)
Thanks again & HAND
