kaudiocreator quit ripping
Hi, all -- I'm not sure whether or not this is a pure kde question, so I'll ask here, too. I've been using kaudiocreator for a few days and have ripped and encoded a handful of CDs on my SuSE 8.1 system. It isn't Matthias's tweaked LAME, and I have to run it as root to see the disc, but I'm happy enough. This evening, though, it suddenly quit on me. I ripped a CD and it went all the way through but did not encode any of the tracks (whereas it usually starts encoding a track as soon as it is ripped), and now after starting over it will not even rip anything, complaining "unknown protocol: file" in the popup window and telling me "ERROR 3: couldn't create slave" at the command line. I didn't touch anything; I swear :-) I had ripped a couple of CDs right before getting to the "problem" CD and didn't change anything for that one, and now I can't do anything period. Well, grip will rip and encode, so it's not a function of the hardware. I've rebooted again but nothing changed; it still tells me in window where I started it at the shell that kded is running, that kdeinit has a communication error with the launcher, and that it couldn't create a slave. I prefer kac over grip because of the interface, so I'd really love to get it fixed. Have you tried restarting KDE? If worst comes to worst try deleting all of the kde and mcop directories in /tmp before starting KDE to rebuild ksycoca. Charles -- "Besides, I think [Slackware] sounds better than 'Microsoft,' don't you?" (By Patrick Volkerding)

I wiped all of the kde-* dirs and tried again (no luck) but neglected to wipe the mcop-* dirs. I'm sorry, I read through the above quoted thread and don't see how Digital Video via USB and CD Ripping are part of the same thread. I will ask my questions again. I'm trying to connect my JVC GR-D200 MiniDV Camcorder to my computer via USB. What module must I load. /var/log/messages tells me the the device is not being claimed by an driver. Thanks, </Jared>

That is precisely the point. Your query is totally unrelated to the thread you have hijacked in order to ask it. -- Sweet moderation Heart of this nation Desert us not We are between the wars - Billy Bragg

Thread hijacking is: Beginning a new message & subject by replying to an existing message to obtain the list address rather than taking the time and effort to type the list address manually [my definition]. If you would remove the 'References:' and 'In-Reply-To:' headers from your new message, you would effectively break the thread and accomplish an acceptable result with a new thread and everything would be hunky-dorey. If you do not understand threading, google will provide you with many explanations. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

They are, though, the way you posted your email. Look how they show on my reader (and many others): (trimmed) 2569 Sep 2 David T-G (3938) . That is called "thread hijacking", and is usually considered bad manners in mail lists. Notice that many people may collapse threads, and only read those they are interested in. People not interested in "kaudiocreator" will not see your question.
I will ask my questions again.
Now that the war has started, I don't think you'll get many answers :-) No; please start a new thread, by using your mail client "compose new email". I'm sure evolution has it, and possibly it has a "post to list". But don't use "Reply" and then change the subject, because that is "hijacking". -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
