Have you run sax2? maybe your config got messed up / over written. as root # init 3 # sax2.
When I try to run 'apt-get upgrade && apt-get upgrade' it tells me
file /opt/kde3/share/apps/noatun/simple.plugin from install of kdemultimedia3-video-xine-3.1.3-7 conflicts with file from package kdemultimedia3-video-3.1.1-50 E: Sub-process /bin/rpm/ returned an error code (184)
It seems like you're trying to install a kde 3.1.3 package(video xine) but
still have the 3.1.1 (video).
Personally I'd run synaptic(available on the apt site or apt-get install synaptic) then upgrade gnome(ulb), then kde to 3.1.3, then worry about apt-get upgrade. Also upgrade qt3, and yast. Remove ktamaga if you have it installed, it's the cause of many problems. I can't think of any other problems I had upgrading.
I use dial up so i tend to do it smaller pieces than the complete upgrade,
that way i can check whats happening without being overwhelmed ny hundreds of packages being upgraded.
Making a little progress but not all there yet. What should I do now?
Thanks,

This was necessary if you were going to run sax2 to fix your second display.

Did it error out? or did it complete and rebuild the rpm database? If the next(gnome) part errored out this should have as well, so you might have just downloaded everything without installing it. To find out, open synaptic and in the drop down menu that's says all packages change it to upgradeable. If its full of choices you probably haven't upgraded anything.
5. Once the distro upgrade was complete, I rebooted to see if anything would change. I got the gdm at runlevel 5 but when I chose gnome as the session, it booted me to kde anyway.
Were you able to log into gnome after the ximian removal? or was this the first time you tried it?
6. I went back and ran synaptic again, this time choosing everything gnome (ulb) there was to install/upgrade. When executing rpm (Uvh) this install gave extra output that I have no idea what it is.

I've done this before as well. But you'll learn more by fixing it. If you'd rather give up and start again ... Do you have any free space on your hard drive(non-partitioned)? If so you can make an extra partition, copy what you can (/var/cache/apt/archives , your home dir, anything you've put in /usr/local ) and just not format it when you install. Write down the starting and ending block info from yast > hardware> partitioner. To burn a data cd use k3b. I think you open a new data project and just drag and drop what you want to burn. You'll need to run k3b setup first, if its the first time you used it. If you want to proceed... make sure you have no kde 3.1.1 rpms left. You may be able to find them using the command James told you about when you were looking for the ximian rpms, or search through with synaptic. If you find some remove them. Then use synaptic and individually select all the kde 3.1.3 packages. Then the gnome stuff. Try to copy any error messages ... HTH -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.2 Pro

Rats. What is in your sources.list? here's mine ... (without the server stuff) usr-local-bin base update-prpm update kde xfree86 extra funktronics packman packman-i686 suse-people security-prpm security If yours is different, add what you don't have and rerun apt-get update, or synaptic update. <snipped >

Do you have gnome installed? I forget what you did after you got rid of ximian. Did you install it with yast2? You may want to use yast to install gnome. <snipped>

Try changing "rpm -qa | grep ximian" to rpm -qa | grep 3.1.1 or kde if that doesn't work . I'd search in synaptic for kde. Then remove the 3.1.1 packages.
If you find some remove them.
-- How do I do this?
I'd use synaptic or kpackage. I believe its rpm -e "package name". You may need -nodeps or some other argument (Please use synaptic until someone confirms this!!!!!!!!) thats why I like to use the graphic interface, there's less chance of screwing up.
Then use synaptic and individually select all the kde 3.1.3 packages.
Then the gnome stuff.
