[opensuse] boot32.efi for 64 bits processor and Leap

Hello, We see more and more often very small but powerfull computers, atom multicore 64 bits, but with UEFI 32 bits firmware. I have one now ("It Works TW891" paid 129€ - 32Gb ssd + 2Gb ram, runs almost perfectly windows 10 32bits or Debian 64bits). these computers can be installed with 64 bits distros, but they need absolutely a 32 bits loader. Right now I on ly know of the hybrid debian 32/64bits dvd to be able to install. Notice that *only the loader* have to be 32bits, the generic name being boot32.efi copying a generic loader to the Leap EFI folder allows booting, and probably installing (I couldn't make all the tests), but the generic one gives only a grub prompt, not handy. Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. I usually take the newest openSUSE kernel (from repository Kernel_stable). But since some month I have a DVB T2 HD card, which requires a patch (see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194171) So I need to compile kernels myself. I have a working compilation path. But the current path has 12 steps! It takes some time. I wonder, why it is so complicated to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE. Is there a better/easier/automated way to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE? I know this blog article. But the article uses Vanilla kernels and also needs 6 steps. With additional patches (4 steps), third-party modules (2 steps) and cleanup (1 step) the article would also need 13 steps: Compiling the Linux Kernel, the SUSE way https://www.suse.com/communities/blog/compiling-de-linux-kernel-suse-way/ This is my Kernel configuration, compilation and installation path: 1. Hi Folks, There seems to be a flurry of IPv6 talk going on, maybe this is time for me to bring up the rogue router problem again? I asked about this a couple of times over the years but could never find anyone to comment on it. First, here's the RFC that describes the problem: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6104 Rogue routers have affected me personally at a customer's site. This is a large, professionally managed, dual-stacked network with a number of v4 class B addresses and thousands of hosts. Subnets seem to be /20 CIDR in size, so there are plenty of "neighbors" on any given subnet. I've encountered the situation where misconfigured Windows systems will advertise themselves as an IPv6 router. They then happily accept traffic and drop it all silently on the floor. This problem doesn't seem to bother other Windows boxes too much, but it absolutely kills SSH connections. SSH preferentially tries IPv6 port 22, which when sent to a dumb Windows box results in very long hangups and connection failures. My workaround for my cohort of Linux desktops and servers was to disable IPv6 for both ssh and sshd. This will work for as long as the host network supports dual stacks, but eventually? Then there's the issue of intentional MITM attacks using this vector. If a bad actor has physical access to a subnet, or has compromised a host on that subnet, your goose is cooked. This link mentions some mitigations, but they're quite technical and may require hardware support. https://community.infoblox.com/t5/IPv6-Center-of-Excellence/Holding-IPv6-Ne… So, what is the threat to a home IPv6 user who has WiFi and an Internet of Things with minimal/non-existent security? I personally feel safer behind a nice natted IPv4 firewall with ACL rules between my copper and WiFi subnets. I just feel that I have more control of the situation with a simpler network. Ie, mark the start of the movie, the end, the commercials inside, and dump all that into a single file, perhaps recoding. I don't need any transition or effect, just a simple editor that allows me to remove unwanted sections. I have tried: pitivi - crashes on start LiVES - works for an hour at 100% CPU and can't load the file. dvbcut - says my mpeg file is not a video (and it certainly is!) tragtor - can convert, but not edit. openshot - almost. My video has two sound tracks, and this tool ignores the second track. cinelerra-cv - I can't make head or tails of it. I tell it to load a video file, it does, but then I don't see how to do anything. It doesn't even display the video. I may have to read the manual, but I dislike having to read a manual for a GUI. Still... kdenlive - Well... crashes too often. I can mark the cuts, but it does not display what I'm cutting. And only one sound track. HandBrake - no edit. Avidemux - one sound track only. Kino - abandonware. Lightworks ?? [opensuse] 42.3 - Konqueror doesn't open to home directory

Since updating to 42.3, I find Konqueror no longer opens to my home directory. I was finally able to get it to the point where it opens to a blank screen, but I still have to click on the home button, to show my home directory? [opensuse] Tape Drive Trouble

Hi, I have 4 tape drives in my server and I am lately experiencing a few problems. One night a backup failed with rmtio failed: Input output Error. I ran it again and it worked. This has happened more and more frequently and now the drive fails writing every time with this error. I put the drive (Hp storageworks Ultrium 920) in another server. It works fine. I have just received a storageworks ultrium 1760 drive today. Same problem is occuring. The easiest way to make the error come up is to try mt -f /dev/st3 erase The drive sounds like it erases the tape, then the tape is unloaded and goes back in again automatically. Then it erases it again, then does it again then again and again then eventually it gives up with the message mt: /dev/st3: rmtioctl failed: Input/output error Can anyone enlighten me, what exactly is an mt: rmtio: Input/output error and how can I diagnose where exactly this error is occuring. I have tried disconnecting all other drives on the SCSI bus and only connecting the one scsi drive. I have also tried a different scsi connector on the same cable (which is where another drive that works fine is usually connected). I thought could this be a fault with the cable or the controller? But why would the other 3 drives work fine? Then I thought but if the problem is with my two drives why do they both work in another server? I have also tried connecting one of my working drives to each SCSI connector on the cable in turn and it works fine on every one of them, so surely it is not the SCSI controller or cable? Answers to the obvious: The drive jumper pins are correct I do have a terminator on the end of the SCSI cable I have tried more than one tape I have ran several cleaning cartridges in each drive. There are no error LEDs on the drives I have already tried turning it off and on again :) Please can anyone assist with this? [opensuse] accessing music files on HDD plugged into router (French ISP "Free")

Hi. This is a very specific case so I'm not expecting miracle responses, but before I give up totally on the idea I thought I'd see if anybody has experience with this: I have an external spinning SATA HD that until now I've plugged directly into the USB port on my PC. There are two partitions, one of which houses my music collection, mostly in FLAC. I access this through Clementine. However, I also have a second PC and the option to access those same files, again through Clementine without having to unplug the drive and stick it in the 2nd PC would be an advantage, especially for times when the first PC is not switched on. I don't want to get into other fancy media storage or outlay further cash. It's not a big deal. But my router, provided (rented, essentially) by my French ISP "Free", has 2 USB ports (and one USB/eSATA). This is the Mini 4K model, box number 1 (I don't bother plugging in box 2 since I don't pay for the TV functionality). Free's routers are perhaps a bit non-standard in their functionality, and you can't simply install some other software on them. This wikipedia page has some info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freebox When I set up the hard drive on the Freebox OS login page, the address it gives me to access the music partition is of the format: http://{my IP address}:{port number}/share/{unique string} It reads XFS, even if it says I should better use ext4, and I believe FLAC files are supported in some way or other if you want to use the Freebox's built-in media functionality, which isn't really my aim. I'd like to set Clementine to read/write to the music partition via the router, and also just access it as a regular partition on a connected device. I can't simply browse to these files in Dolphin (I'm on Leap 42.2 with KDE). I can use the Freebox OS login through my browser to access the files but you have to use its clumsy interface to upload onto it. The French documentation doesn't really cover a use-case like mine. The above wiki page suggests: 'The server's hard drive is available from the local network to Macintosh, Linux, and Windows computers. It can be made available from the WAN.' I think that's rather referring to the built-in HD on a different model. My model has no built-in HD. [opensuse] 42.3: No graphical login after upgrade

Hi, I just upgraded to 42.3. It seems to boot normal, but where the graphical login should appear is only a black screen with a mouse-pointer (that I can move) - and nothing happens... If in the boot menu I choose and older Kernel (4.4.74-18.20) I can log in to KDE. That's from where I write now. Where and what can I check so that I can boot normally? Thanks for your help! [opensuse] update repo very slow

This morning trying to refresh my repositories, the refresh was getting hung up on updating the repo at http://download.opensuse.org/update/leap/42.2/oss/repodata/. I switched from zypper to yast, and started monitoring the update, and it turns out this file was the one that was going very slow, in the repodata subdirectory. http://download.opensuse.org/update/leap/42.2/oss/repodata/cfa171ff1eeec497… So why would that be? The file is listed at a size of 13M, and another file listed at 9.2M seemed to take only the normal time of a few seconds to download. [opensuse] Impressions

I am unsubscribing again, but just wanted to say 2 or three things. I mean, I am happy to see that the OpenSUSE mailing list is at least a lot more busy than the Ubuntu one. OpenSUSE always seemed to have a much larger following strangely enough but maybe that is also because it more a community thing of a real community instead of one artificially created by a company. One the other hand -- well and I could also say that in the past of course OpenSUSE had a great community wiki that really felt like a collection of random people feeling welcome and doing their thing. However, participation is now a commodity. But anyway, back to topic. It troubles me to see that... Basic computer problems such as attaining an IP address or being able to log in, having graphical log in errors, ... I mean to say that if you cannot cover the basics in life, you will never get to the higher things. If you spend your every day hunting, you will never get to some writing, know what I'm saying? The recent debate apparently with dear Linda about rescue environments not being usable by the average person. If you cannot cover the basics then what good can come of the higher level functions? I wish the time would one day come for Linux where support requests were for applications or more advanced stuff. For how to modify the system... ...instead of getting it running ... When I use Windows I do not frequent Windows mailing lists or forums. The thing just works and keeps working most of the time. There are some forums were very mundane problems are voiced; I stay away from these forums. It would be the equivalent of constantly having to deal with people complaining their electricity doesn't work, just because you own a house. Of course Microsoft is trying to render itself extinct by forcing people in due time to pay monthly fees for everything. And I don't know much about Apple but it also sees fans leaving. Due to exorbitant prices in that case, but anyway. Microsoft is in fact in the process of making Linux (or a free, community-owned system) the only possibility. To think that it would suicide. But anyway. Even so it upsets me that the daily things people on Linux mailing lists deal with are so basic and mundane, troubleshooting the lowest cores of the system. Sorry to insult here but to me it is the equivalent of endless worry. Basic stuff should just work. I personally feel the same way I think Linda does. The problem space is getting bigger, not smaller. There are more things that can go wrong now, than in the past. I used OpenSUSE from about 2001 I believe and then later again from about 2009 for a while. I long for the days when stuff was simple and overseeable. When software had the equivalent feeling of the cartoons of the 80s: slow and sane. And now: everything a hyper panic. People these days cannot stand watching these cartoons. Of the 80s. Don't have the patience for it. Everything is so slow-paced we can't believe it. But it also means sanity. Peace and tranquility. I hope this for Linux. But I notice that the underbelly is rumbling and maybe we ate something wrong. That's all I wanted to say: I am a bit shocked by the kinds of troubleshooting that comes by. That's all. I installed 42.3 on a Dell Precision T7500, in /dev/sda3, ext4, taking all the default Grub options, without UEFI. It has 13.1 and 42.2 already installed in the other partitions. After the installation, 42.3 booted correctly. In /etc/defaults/grub I set GRUB_TIMEOUT=300 and removed options quiet and splash from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT. I then ran grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg On reboot I see Welcome to Grub! error: file `boot/grub2/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found Entering rescue mode.. grub rescue > Googling shows that this is a known problem in other distributions, but with no crisp simple solution. After reading https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/70538/grub-error-file-grub-i386-pc… I wondered if the simplest approach is to copy the file from /usr/lib/grub2/ ? But how do I do this? Grub rescue is crippled. No help command, no cp command, no command completion, all that "ls (hd0,msdos3)" reports is "File system is ext2". (It's ext4.) I am not an expert in this area - am I looking at a grub2-mkconfig bug? Any hint would be appreciated. I have been getting this error sometimes when running zypper (on Leap 42.3): Error code: Curl error 47 Error message: Maximum (6) redirects followed If I tell zypper to retry, it usually works. So, when running zypper interactively, this only a curiosity. The problem is that I am using kiwi to try to build some OEM images of Leap 42.3, and that fails when this happens. So in that context it is a problem. It seems to happen for any repo. All my repos are http://download.opensuse.org, it is doing the redirection to mirrors. The latest updates to the system want to install two Noto emoji fonts. That annoys me because I can't see ever wanting any emoji font, let alone a google one, let alone two of the bl**d things. So YaST updater tells me that the fonts are 'recommended' by a 'security' update to chromium. WTF! So I would like to tell YaST not to install those recommendations, but I can't figure out how to do it. Why does YaST not tell me those fonts are recommendations rather than real dependencies? Why does it not give me the opportunity to choose whether to install them? The online help says to refer to the manual for details but doesn't provide a link. https://en.opensuse.org/System_Updates says to refer to YaST Online Update = http://doc.opensuse.org/products/opensuse/openSUSE/opensuse-reference/cha.o… but when I click on that link it takes me to https://doc.opensuse.org/ and when I select the HTML version of the Reference Guide it seems there is no such chapter - the word Update apears only once in the contents - 'Dynamic Update of Zone Data' and none of the occurences of the word YaST appear relevant. For some years I have been using lxde and later xfce with openSUSE versions up to 42.2. I am now doing a net install of 42.3 with, I had hoped, xfce. Previously this was a simple choice on the User Interface page, but this choice has disappeared with 42.3. All I see is User Interface Please select a user interface * Desktop with KDE Plasma * Desktop with Gnome * Server (Text Mode) * Custom Why has xfce been removed? If you put a simple email (like yourname(a)yourISP.com) in the Reply To Address configuration in you Default identity, Kmail inserts a line in the text of your sent message with the field 'Reply-To:' 2. If you put a non simple email (like Your Name <yourname(a)yourISP.com>) in the Reply To Address configuration in you Default identity, Kmail DOES NOT inserts a line in the text of your sent message with the field 'Reply-To:' 3. In all other email Identities kmail inserts a line in the text of your sent message with the field 'Reply-To:' regarding if you configure that Identity with a simple or non simple email. Hi all, This afternoon - after a lengthy backup process of /home - I tried to upgrade from 42.2. to 42.3. The installer media is an USB stick. Shortly after beginning the process it stuck at the wifi driver, which is iwlwifi. Tried several times, to no avail. Then I tried to install instead of upgrade, with the same result. I downloaded 42.3 with metalink which automatically checks the integrity - at least this said on the page. What else can I do to have 42.3? Thanks, Albert

Hi all, I wanted to write leap 42.3 on an USB stick. Unfortunately I did not realize that my 1 TB Toshiba external HDD was also plugged in and mounted. Imagewriter selected it and offered to unmount it and I agreed. Only a few seconds later I knew I made a big mistake. I iimediately cancelled writing. Now I cannot acces data on it. [opensuse] Leap 42.2 boot/kdm4 num lock on

Hello: In openSUSE Leap 42.2 I want the num lock to be switched on either during boot or when kdm4 login manager starts. That is when I have to give my password I want the num lock to be turned on. Currently it's turned off when kdm4 login screen appears. I tried to change this by: 1) in yast sysconfig editor Hardware/Keyboard/KBD_NUMLOCK setting to yes. This only gave error message "Cannot determine service state, systemd service does not exist: kbd". The setting has been changed to yes but it has no effect. 2) I changed /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc file: I added a line Numlock=On at the end of [X-*-Greeter] section. This has no effect either. How can I have num lock turned foe my kdm4 login screen? I wanted to change num lock setting in the BIOS but it has not such option. Hello, I was runnng 42.1 and now upgraded to 42.2 as an intermediate state to upgrade to 42.3. Now 42.2 is running. Hi!, Does anybody have experience using HD 6310 GPUs with newer kernels?, I have and old E350M1/USB3 motherboard that would like to turn into a kodi appliance. I've seen a lot of bad reports regarding radeon opensource driver performance, has this been improved in newer kernels?. Also, HDMI audio seems to be hit or miss. Would love to have some feedback on this. It pays to be consistent about what's running out of packman, doesn't it? I mean you don't want a player from one repository using codecs from another. So I ran # zypper dup --from 422_packman and OUCH The following 20 packages are going to be downgraded: kplayer libavcodec56 libavfilter5 libavformat56 libavresample2 libavutil54 libgstphotography-1_0-0 libmjpegutils-2_0-0 libpostproc53 libquicktime0 libswresample1 libswscale3 libvlc5 libvlccore8 mjpegtools pdftk-qgui vlc vlc-codecs vlc-noX vlc-qt No reason given. The vendor change was irrelevant to this and the replacements didn't cover these. So I tried # zypper dup --no-allow-downgrade --from 422_packman The first item I got was Problem: problem with installed package kplayer-0.7.2-2.5.x86_64 Solution 1: downgrade of kplayer-0.7.2-2.5.x86_64 to kplayer-0.7.2-2.4.x86_64 Choose the above solution using '1' or skip, retry or cancel [1/s/r/c] (c): No other alternatives offered. [opensuse] Leap 42.2 → 42.3, Samba stops working for Windows XP client

Hi people, I'm managing a Samba server for a pretty small place. And for reasons outside of my control, there's a single computer there that runs Windows XP. It is not connected to the WAN, only to the LAN. That computer regularly needs files from the Samba server. A few days after Leap 42.3 came out, I upgraded the server. Everything was smooth sailing, except the Windows XP computer could no longer connect to the Samba share. Every other computer could, except that one. Is there a known incompatibility introduced in the upgrade from Samba 4.4 to 4.6? I've looked around, but I wasn't able to find anything. I rolled the server back to 42.2 using Snapper (which was also smooth sailing, thankfully), but I have to finish the upgrade within four-ish weeks. Any help would be very much appreciated. This is a weird one. The volume control applet in TW on my new T570 says "No output or input devices found," but I can play audio just fine. I just have no control over the volume, unless it's built into the application (such as streaming audio through my browser.) It also doesn't display applications that are currently playing audio. running "lspci" shows "Audio device: Intel corporation device 9d71 (rev 21)" Any way that I can get the audio devices to show up in the applet? [opensuse] Legacy Nvidia Driver 340.102 does not compile under Leap 42.3

After updating to Leap 42.3, Nvidia leagcy drivers do not compile. There is an error message loading the kernel due to incompatible sources. In TW, this was resolved by applying patches to Nvidia's source files. Does anyone on this list know if any patches have to be applied to 340.102 version of the drive to install and load under 42.3? I cannot use latest drivers as I have an old laptop that does not use newer Nvidia chip. The laptop has 330m chipset. [opensuse] Leap 42.3 and nvidia = kaput?

Hi, I just updated two machines to 42.3 using zypper dup... ... both machines have nvidia graphics, both have trouble with it now. Machine 1: Laptop, Geforce 840M, Bumblebee (nvidia optimus), several games won't work through "optirun <name>" or "primusrun <name>" anymore, no error messages whatsoever, the games just don't start, or start and exit without errors. Also, can't start games from within steam for linux anymore. Machine 2: Desktop, dualscreen setup, Geforce GTX 760 Ti, nividia driver rpm from nvidia repo through zypper, screen flickers as if "the cable is loose" Neither of the two had any problems like that with 42.2, and neither produces any meaningful error messages anywhere. If the discussion is about a rescue environment of a computer system, then that rescue environment depending for its usefulness on external resources is a bit of a contradiction in terms you know. That's all. I have had this discussion in other places but a rescue system that is not dependable is just a non-functional rescue system. That was on an Ubuntu mailing list. There are Ubuntu systems in which the rescue prompt is so buggy that you have a menu to select a bash prompt but after selecting the prompt the menu keeps responding to keypresses or something of the kind. [opensuse] Stop Jobs taking too long

Today, I started seeing stop jobs taking too long on my 42.2 system. For example Samba NMB counted down the entire 1:30 seconds before system[some letter we dare not mention] killed it. There are no actual stop job defined for nmb.service The prior shutdown wanted to count down 5 minutes to shutdown modemmanager.service. (the service file shows no stop job defined). There's no configuration specifying a 5 minute timeout on anything. (Side issue: why is modemmanager wanted by multiuser.target?) What is up with the stop jobs suddenly taking so long? [opensuse] Streaming video

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but figure those here can probably help. I have a server with a couple of very low traffic websites. I would like to provide streaming video, on demand, whatever it is called where someone visiting the site can click on a link and watch a video. My first thought was that it would be simpler from an admin point of view to just upload the video to Youtube and use that link, which I may end up doing if there is too much work involved in making apache2 serve out the mp4 file from the server. My question is more of a how do I make this work in apache2 locally? I have been using it forever. From 7.0 through Leap 42.2. It is the only font for konsole as far as I am concerned. For Leap 42.2 it is in repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_Leap_42.2/x86_64. Bit don't find one in repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_Leap_42.3/x86_64. Where might I find it please. [opensuse] Next roadblock: encrypted home isn't prompting for password during boot

Now that I've finally got Tumbleweed bootable on my laptop, the encrypted home mount point that I set up on it isn't working. During the boot process it'll hang for a bit, and if I hit escape, it toggles back and forth between "a start job is running for dev-disk-by\x2did\blah\part3.device" and "a start job is running for dev-mapper-cr_home.device" If I view the boot.log, it's also got: [DEPEND] Dependency failed for cryptography setup for cr_home [DEPEND] Dependency failed for dev-mapper-cr_home.device [DEPEND] Dependency failed for /home [DEPEND] Dependency failed for File System Check on /dev/mapper/cr_home [DEPEND] Dependency failed for Encrypted Volumes I googled around a while and didn't see anything recent that was helpful. Now that I finally have Tumbleweed bootable on my laptop, I'm having problems getting the encrypted home to mount -- it never prompts for a password. [opensuse] leap 42.2/42.3 - libreoffice odt or pdf will not print, no error output

I try to print labels on libreoffice via a odt. This was originally a file for openoffice and was imported to libreoffice. I can convert the file, manipulate it in any way. No problem. But I cannot print for unknown reasons. The printer is a lexmark C543 color laser and prints other documents flawlessly. How can I get a debug output to understand why the printout fails. The printer receives the data, blinks, does the click to get ready and then the whole print job vanishes. I am not really understanding what is the issue. No error message not even on the LCD of the printer. Quite misterious. Hey everyone, We got new laptops at work, Lenovo T570's. Long story short, I can boot from the Tumbleweed install DVD fine, and it seems to install without any issues. But whenever I reboot, it never boots oS, unless I boot from the install DVD and say "boot from hard drive." I've tried enabling UEFI mode on the laptop, forcing legacy only, enabling and disabling secure boot, and about every other combination I can think of (each with a fresh installation afterwards.) All of them have had the same results. I've also tried two different Tumbleweed snapshots, 20170516 and 20170724. Is there anything special I need to do to get it to actually boot oS without the DVD? Hello: grub legacy has "grub" command which runs a grub shell. It can be run even in a running linux system (in a terminal window). Does grub2 has similar command? I could not find it in grub2 documentation. I would like to experiment with / learn grub2 shell commands in my running linux system. Assuming you've read the bug report I linked you, can you try rebuilding the partition table? A Live CD with GParted on it should do. Make sure to choose GPT instead of MBR. After you've done that, your install _should_ go smoothly. I haven't the faintest idea why, but that did it for me when I thought I was going mad. [opensuse] TW downgrades

Hi List doing the 'zypper dup' on my TW laptop today presented me 7 downgrades: The following 7 packages are going to be downgraded: gdk-pixbuf-devel gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders-32bit gdk-pixbuf-thumbnailer libgdk_pixbuf-2_0-0 libgdk_pixbuf-2_0-0-32bit typelib-1_0-GdkPixbuf-2_0 All those packages came from the normal TW repo, about a week ago, but now no longer are in there - that's why zypper reports them as (System Packages) I haven't seen notifications about this change - are they not announced anywhere, and why does it happen in first place? Security? Stability? Just curious... [opensuse] KVM virual machine directory

Hi, I have a 30 GB dedicated partition currently mounted as /var. The aim was to have the KVM virtual machines on a separate volume so to be able to install a new Leap with formatting the system volumes but to be able to selective NOT format the kvm part. AFAIU, the /var is too large as a choice. How should I mount the volume to allow the new system not to conflict with existing var files and in the main moment to protect the installed VMs having them available after a complete new install of leap. [opensuse] no key on packages from package search

Can someone tell me if I did this right? I looked for a package on sofware.opensuse.org that is not in the regular rpms. I found the package I was looking for. I didn't want to do the 1-click install, so I downloaded the package to my downloads directory. Then, to verify the integrity fo the file, I ran this command: rpm -K --nosignature TaskCoach-1.4.3-1.1.noarch.rpm It said the file was bad and failed the signature verification. So, I downloaded it again, and ran the command again, and this time it said the file was good. Then I downloaded the key for the repo of that package, and imported it with the following: rpm --import repomd.xml.key After that, I did a zypper install of the package, and it all installed correctly with no errors or warnings. [opensuse] How to find a mysterious mailer?

Hi, this morning, my company's postmaster sent me an excerpt from the mail log stating that there is some software on one of my boxes that doesn't speak proper IMAP. 19-Jul-2017 22:38:33.49 tcp_local BS 0 rfc822; a1 LOGOUT 500 5.5.1 Unknown command "a1 LOGOUT" specified TCP|a.b.c.d|465|a.b.e.f|48270 The thing that I find most interesting is that I do not have any entries in /var/log/mail at this time. Some minutes earlier and some minutes later there are, but not at this time. Both hosts use the same time source. So I guess that there is a script running on the box that reads the postfix config entry for its relayhost (postconf -h relayhost) and sends a mail all by itself. And doing so, it uses a wrong IMAP command, LOGOUT instead of QUIT. The only LOGOUT in found outside binary files is in </usr/lib64/ruby/2.1.0/net/imap.rb>. As far as I understand the code, near line 1200 the command LOGOUT is sent to the mailhost. How can I find the script that uses this module? The file belongs to ruby2.1-stdlib, and this is required (rpm) by ruby2.1 only. This itself is required only by ruby, which in turn ist required by ruby-devel, yast2-services-manager and yast2-ruby-bindings. Would any of those packages run a script that bypasses my local MTA? None of them has an entry in /etc/cron*. And none of the entries in /etc/cron* is scheduled at this time... So, how could a find the script that is responsible for the mail log entries that my postmaster showed me? BTW, just to make sure the ruby library is the right place, I modified the code a bit so that it should send QUIT now. If there are no more log entries from that host on monday, I can be sure to have found the proper place. But I still do not now how to locate the script... (Apologies for the cross posting, please do not reply to this post in EITHER list, all feedback should be sent directly to board(a)opensuse.org) Dear Community, On both the opensuse@ and opensuse-factory@ mailinglists we've had a recent uptick in off-topic discussions which often took a very contentious tone and nature. The Board have extensively reviewed the recent threads, and we would like to thank the vast majority of the community who dealt with these threads in a largely constructive way, even when individuals disagreed on the finer points being discussed. That said, there were a pair of individuals who repeatedly breached our Projects Guiding Principles throughout these discussions and ignored repeated warnings and guidance to try and encourage them to correct their tone and/or behaviour. Their failure to listen to both Board members & (equally importantly) the wider community can be seen to be a direct cause of the worst and most uncomfortable parts of the recent discussions. Upon reviewing the recent threads, the Board has taken the exceptional, and unanimous, decision to permanently ban those two people from the openSUSE mailinglists. The Board has taken this action with the aim of ensuring our lists are a healthy environment for discussion, which was not possible with these individuals inability to adhere to our Projects guiding principles. The individuals involved have been contacted directly. They will not be named by the Board in the interest of respecting their privacy & potential future interactions with other open source communities. This is not an attempt to moderate either of these lists of squelch discussion which we (the Board, or the Project) disagree with. Just as unanimously as the Board decided to take this action, the Board was equally unanimous in it's decision to not punish, sanction, or otherwise moderate any other individuals or lists as a whole. There is no intention to shutdown opensuse(a)opensuse.org or any other active openSUSE mailinglist. The Board is hopeful that without these two individuals bringing their unwelcome communication style to the lists, all openSUSE mailinglists have a better chance to fulfil their intended roles in the Project. opensuse(a)opensuse.org is the intended support mailinglist of the Project. Anyone with a problem, especially novices, should feel welcome to ask any question (especially technical ones) and should have a reasonable expectation of getting meaningful and helpful answers. It is not a mailinglist for debating the direction of the openSUSE Project as a whole or of specific technologies which openSUSE is heavily invested in. opensuse-factory(a)opensuse.org is the primary technical mailinglist of the Project. Technical discussions between contributors about the development of Tumbleweed & Leap are expected to happen here, if no more relevant list already exists for them. Requests from non-contributors are not unwelcome, but it should be recognised that repeating the same request for years is not likely to persuade a change of mindset. At some point people need to accept that some things are the way that they are, and they will stay that way until someone contributes a change. For example, that is the state where we are with systemd. It's removal from the distribution or the addition of alternatives has been requested repeatedly, and yet no openSUSE contributor has done anything in this area. Until we see contributions in this area the Board feels it is pointless for people to request otherwise, and respectfully request that no one on any of our mailinglists requests the removal of systemd or the addition of alternative init systems. But we also want to make clear that this request, and our recent actions, are not the start of heavy handed moderation of our mailinglists. We want these lists to be largely self-moderated with common sense being applied. Newcomers are going to post off-topic stuff, either in the wrong list or sometimes totally off-topic to the entire Project. Even established mailinglist posters are human and will make mistakes from time to time. When this happens the first efforts should be to welcoming, helpful, and then educational to encourage them to post on-topic and in the correct lists in the future. We want these mailinglists to be a healthy reflection of the general tone of the openSUSE Project, and this is what the vast majority of the list posters have consistently done even in recent days. Once again, the Board thanks you all for that. If the situation ever develops that our mailinglists need additional moderation, the Board has briefly discussed the possibility of establishing community moderators for our lists. We think the idea of self-policing has the most prospect of being successful. But at this time we see no need to investigate this further and hope that everything will start to return to 'normal' now. FWIW, Responding to notes like these takes time -- days for a first draft (over 2 days for this one). Most of my notes take time for anything but simple answers as I too often need to spend time looking things up. Even after writing a note there are many times I don't think it is good enough or worthwhile enough to send and end saying nothing and only wasting hours or days of composition. sigh. It's also not a real fun topic area: politics, confirming and finding the basis for perceptions and/or correcting misperceptions, but feeling a need to understand what feels like a disproportionate amount of blame or anger for excessive characterizations that don't seem to fit my actions. There have been several design decisions that ostensibly have had little to do with systemd-devel that have been implemented within opensuse's implementation that don't seem required by systemd. It doesn't seem appropriate to discuss opensuse's specific implementation details, especially ones that don't directly relate to systemd-devel. As an example, systemd recommends booting directly from disk and not using initrd to support fast booting. Fast booting was initially given as one of the reasons for the move to a new boot system. Given that premise, it is surprising that direct boot, previously supported, was removed as a supported option with the move to systemd -- EVEN though systemd recommends using it for boot speed. Some people think that talking about this issue has something to do with systemd -- IT DOESN'T as systemd doesn't require it. This highlights part of the problem. For me -- several of the decisions regarding opensuse boot don't seem to be part of a generic systemd implementation, but were about choices opensuse made. This seems to point at another need for more communication about boot & service processes/control on openSuSE. You say things haven't changed for 6 years, so having a venue to talk about the current processes (or change) is not needed -- yet saying it "isn't needed" is a perpetuation of the thinking and manipulation that made the change without the input of the online community. You don't want it discussed here, and you don't want it discussed in another group -- just like you didn't want it discussed online when the decision was made to change the boot+service control environment. It's not about "it's over"... it's a matter of 1) it not beginning, and 2) asserting that how it is now, is "permanent" and no one should be allowed to discuss anything different unless they've already created a new option. I've had more than one experience with creating new options in "open-source" SW -- to have them rejected after the "put-up-or-shut-up" bluff was called. How is it different in this situation? As for another 'group' -- it's also the case that the group wouldn't necessarily be aimed at developers, but at those from this group that might want systemd help or want to discuss it past the tolerance level of people on this group. It was for _you_ and the community that _I_ thought separating out systemd discussion would be of benefit. It seemed that would be both a fair method of achieving your goal to reduce discussion of it here, as well as allowing design discussions, including how to work around various shortcomings that people using opensuse have encountered. Hi With 5.3 i could highlight from a web page and paste into Writer or Calc with the scroll wheel, not happening in 5.4. I faced this problem in LO quite a while back, seems to have a regression here somewhere. I've not changed any settings since the upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4 Anyone else have this issue? I am wondering what some folks out there use for a task manager? I am looking for something that has a desktop client, a web interface, and can sync with my android phone. The web interface is not that important if the desktop client is pretty strong. I looked at wunderlist, but there is no desktop client available for linux. Maybe there used to be? But it doesn't seem there is anymore. I am considering taskcoach - as someone has built a package for it and put it in the build service. [opensuse] Failing to get login screen or desktops

Hi - I kinda suspect a recent batch of update did not go well with one of my computers and my efforts to research and figure out what has gone wrong are failing, so once again I am in need of the assistance of the openSuSE/KDE gurus... I am running openSuSE 42.2 x64, my displaymanager is set to sddm and my windowmanager is set to kde4. My system is booting up OK and all of my system services run fine, the only thing wrong is that I do not get a login screen, or a desktop. It simply comes up with a black screen. I can do a CTRL-ALT F3 to bring up a single shell console but so far no joy in getting my desktop or any graphical process to work. FWIW my video is built in to my motherboard and is the Intel HD Graphics 530. So this is where I have gotten to... Googling is showing me lots of people are having similar/related problems on other distros, but no joy so far in finding a solution or anything relevant to exactly what I am experiencing... [opensuse] damaged HDD?

Following on from my post last night in another thread of mine: https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2017-07/msg00853.html This is a new problem so I don't want that post going off-topic. I just wonder if anyone else has experience with this drive model, or more general thoughts. I have a Transcend Storejet 25M3 2TB external SATA USB drive, which contains a Seagate Samsung SpinPoint M9T, model ST2000LM003 HN-M201RAD inside. Here's some details on it: https://us.transcend-info.com/Products/No-284 I only bought it in December 2016, it's still under warranty. I originally split it into 2 partitions - the first, 700GB or so, ext4, for backup of someone else's machine; the second, taking the rest of the disk, xfs, for my music collection (mostly FLAC). Until the other day, I'd plugged it in directly to a few Linux machines, reading my music files directly off the xfs partition. Always ensured I mount/unmount properly. As seen in the above specifications, the drive has 'Military-grade shock resistance'. That said, it's never been bashed about in any way or mishandled, and certainly not subjected to any shock or other misuse whilst plugged in. Since I recently exchanged my router for an up-to-date version from my French ISP, I decided to plug the drive into the router so as to access the music collection from a central location regardless of which device I'm using (all over-detailed in the above thread). The French ISP, "Free", is very geek-friendly and the router supports a few filesystems with ext4 being the native format. XFS is also available but it prompts warnings of slow access or other difficulties, recommending the use of ext4 instead. Using the router's built-in partition verification tool (non-destructive), the first ext4 partition check passed in under a minute, but the second xfs partition just hangs and grinds away at the drive for hours, eventually forcing me to disconnect using the router's front panel display and reboot. I could nonetheless read/write the xfs partition and access my music files. But trying to update my music collection across the LAN in Clementine was going up to around 95% complete, then dropping back down a few per cent, endlessly, for hours. So I decided to back up the music data and reformat the 2nd partition as ext4. I used the openSUSE partitioner, copied the music back over (about 150GB). Plugged the drive back into the router, but the drive access light is permanently flashing every couple of seconds, which it never did before. If I touch the drive I can feel that every few seconds there is some clunking, though not audible. It seems to be in a seek loop. I plugged it directly into my PCs and the same thing happens when the second partition is mounted. Mounting the first partition on its own is fine. I tried deleting and reformatting the second partition (again as ext4) with GParted on the other PC, and even with no data copied over, as soon as I mount it I get the same seek issues. Suspecting drive failure, I've tried running S.M.A.R.T. tests using GSmartControl. Attempting the extended test which requires about 6 hours, three times it has stopped saying 'User aborted', but I never touched it, and I ensured there was no power-saving that would have messed it up. Twice it only made it to 10~20%, the other time it got 80% through overnight but then bottled out again. I don't really know what to look for before I contact Transcend support. Of course I immediately removed the Transcend Win/Mac software and tools that were on the drive so as to reformat. I don't want to try low-level format or suchlike before contacting support. [opensuse] Leap vs Tumbleweed

I'm sure this has been asked and answered many times here. If not answered at least discussed to death. But I've not followed much of those discussions, and am now planning on upgrading my 13.2 install to a new one. Obvious question is, which one? I run two boxes, one as a server and the other just a desktop. I'm upgrading the server first as there is currently no services on it I depend on (I need to start rebuilding that so hence the upgrade). Nothing here is mission critical, just hobbyist type stuff. My experience with openSuse in the past is after taking some time setting up a server, that will run about 2 years with updates, then (not doing upgrades), having to re-install the newer openSuse from scratch then re-building all the server parts. This can be and is a pain. My feeling right now is to try Tumbleweed as I think it will keep updating itself, and I won't need to do an complete reinstall from time to time. That is a big factor to me, as long as it keeps running. I don't normally run proprietary video or other drivers, just plain Jane oS drivers. Considering my situation as being not mission critical, other than not wanting to lose data files etc, is there any reason not to go with Tumbleweed on this? Thanks for any input. [opensuse] Can't boot btrfs snapshot sent to then received from an external disk

Hello, I have the following usecase: I'd like to be able to put my Btrfs snapshots taken with snapper on an external disk and then send them back to the origin disk when needed to do a snapper rollback. The problem is I can't boot a snapshot received from the external disk. The snapshot entry appears in grub in the list of bootable snapshots but I can't enter it. Note that I've no problem to send a Btrfs snapshot on an external disk then to send it back to the origin disk using 'btrfs send' and 'btrfs receive' commands. Here are the steps I've done: 1. Install openSUSE Tumbleweed on a vm, default partitioning settings, except I didn't create a separate XFS /home partition, it's just another Btrfs subvolume. 2. Create a snapshot with snapper, it gets id #2. 3. Send the snapshot to an external disk (not really an external disk, just another virtual disk I added to the vm and mounted at /mnt): > mkdir -p /mnt/2 > cp /.snapshots/2/info.xml /mnt/2 > btrfs send /.snapshots/2/snapshot | btrfs receive /mnt/2 4. Delete the snapshot from the origin disk (snapper delete 2). 5. Send the snapshot from the external disk back to the origin: > mkdir -p /.snapshots/2 > cp /mnt/2/info.xml /.snapshots/2 > btrfs send /mnt/2/snapshot | btrfs receive /.snapshots/2 6. Regenerate grub-snapshot.cfg with '/usr/lib/snapper/plugins/grub --refresh' 7. Reboot 8. On grub, select "boot from read-only snapshot" then select snapshot 2. Nothing happens. I stay on the list of bootable snapshots. No error message. I don't know how grub handles snapshots. As far as I understand, there is openSUSE-specific code that enables grub to boot Btrfs snaphshots (such as https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file/openSUSE:Factory/grub2/grub2-b…) Do you see the reason why I can't enter the snapshot entry in grub? I think it may be related to subvolumes' UUIDs somehow because when the snapshot is sent with btrfs send, the received snapshot: - has no parent UUID; I guess it's the reason why it's not seen as a snapshot (not listed with option -s of btrfs subvolume list). - gets a received UUID, which is the UUID (or the received UUID if any) of the sent snapshot - gets a new UUID Whereas snapshots that are not sent keep their parent UUID (which is the one from snapshot 1, "first root filesystem"). When I click on a mailto link on a web page the compose page opens UNDER other windows. Sometimes I can't see it at all. This is very annoying and different to how the world used to be. But I don't know what has changed, so I'm asking here first to see if anybody has any ideas. My browser is Firefox 52.1.1 My MUA is Claws Mail 3.13.2 My OS is Leap 42.2 both applications are the standard versions from the openSUSE repositories. Hi Installed qt 5.9 in order to develop a qtquick app. This removed a lot of things, including akonadiserver, kmail and korganizer. I miss the todo-list. Trying to install any of these retruns a complaint that kdepim- runtime-16.08.2-1.1 is required, so it wants qt 5.6.1 back. What's tjhe issue with kdepim-runtime and qt 5.9? Can it be found in another repo? Before I write a bug report, I like to hear, if everyone else has problems with the latest openSUSE Leap 42.2 kernel update (kernel-default-4.4.73-18.17.1.x86_64)? If I try to shutdown or reboot the PC, the Kernel crashes at the end. As a work-around for the problem, that the PC is unresponsive after reboot action I set "kernel.panic = 20" in /etc/sysctl.d/reboot-after-kernel-panic.conf. Hi everyone, I am maintaing a few packages in my home project in OBS [0] For each of them, Leap 42.2, Leap 42.3 and Tumbleweed repositories are enabled with the "Build","Publish" and "Use for Build" flags. I mainly manage my home project through osc (on a Tumbleweed machine). The latest packages that I have built (Gcolor3, Feedreader and svgcleaner for instance) have been built successfully on the wanted repos and, as such, the resulting RPM files appears in their respective download repositories [1]. But I cannot find them in https://software.opensuse.org web interface for Leap 42.3 (of course "Show development, language and debug packages" is enabled"). I have tried to "enforce" publication for Leap 42.3 in the meta configuration for svgcleaner [2] without success. Am I mistaking somewhere or forgetting something ? [opensuse] Libreoffice fonts after latest upgrade

Running 42.2 I did a zypper up yesterday which included a lot of changes to Libreoffice, which I accepted. The upshot here is that LO no longer uses Bitstream Charter, which is my font of choice for LO docs and spreadsheets. Is there a way I can fix this, still using the OS LO installation ? The opensuse(a)opensuse.org is meant to be a support mailinglist for the openSUSE distributions. No one is being helped by the continuation of this thread or other ones like it. I respectfully request that the discussion of this topic ends and all of the people involved do not create, continue, or restart any discussion about the pros or cons of systemd on this mailinglist again. Discussions that seek to practically help people with systemd issues are of course perfectly fine, but it is unacceptable to suggest removal of systemd on this list when it has been the only supported init system for months. Religious discussions about whether systemd is good, or bad, do not help anyone. Take them off our support & development mailinglists. Failure to comply with my above request, will lead to my recommendation to the openSUSE Board that we consider banning the people ignoring this request. If this is anything more than 2 or 3 people, I will actually consider recommending that the Board discuss removing this entire mailinglist, because I am sick of having to explain to new community members that opensuse(a)opensuse.org was once a support mailinglist but no longer serves that purpose effectively as it now has far, far too much commentary & techno-nonsense religion discussions by people who love to complain but not contribute. This website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/html5 contains an html5 video. You have to be opted in to html5, it says if you are on the right hand side. This video wasn't working for me in seamonkey or firefox, until I enabled the Packman repository and installed Mplayer. So I think there are some dependencies which are not satisfied by installing firefox. [opensuse] Loading latest kernel is failing.

Hi - After a recent set of updates, one of my computers, running openSuSE Leap 42.2 x64 can no longer boot up and is having troubles loading the kernel. I get the following error message when Grub is running - Loading Linux 4.4.74-18.20-default Can't read kernel /boot/vmlinuz-4.4.74-18.20-default. Loading initial Ramdisk error: you need to load the kernel first. I think I have seen this sort of error before, sometime in the distant past, but don't remember how I solved it... I can go into the Advance Options for loading openSuSE (in the GRUB menu) and select an older version of openSUSE Leap 42.2, with Linux 4.4.73-18.17-default and get the system to run. So I suspect this is probably something simple like a missing link or some config file error? So can some kind guru tell me how to fix this? Thanks in advance... In the following two use cases I have to deactivate SuSEfirewall2, because otherwise the connection fails: 1. Streaming from Chrome browser on PC to Chromecast device attached to TV 2. Browsing MythTV media on PC from smartphone with a DLNA client The log file shows that the ports are nearly random, so single ports or small ranges are not enough. I may allow full access (all ports) from the smartphone and from Chromecast using MAC or IP address, but I do not fully trust the two devices. What is the preferred solution? [opensuse] 42.3 no window decorations in mate

Attached is installed packages list that ought to account for all basics: zypper se -si | grep -v lib | egrep 'mate|gnome|gtk' I've never tried mate before. I installed 42.3 fresh yesterday minimal X, then added Plasma, which works well. A mate session appears to start complete, but nothing I try opening has any window decorations. I opened Firefox, but mouse clicks in its UI do nothing, and I can't even close it using Ctrl-Q. The show desktop button said there was no window manager running, so I installed TWM, but it didn't help. I've found no mate bugs open on boo that include strings decorations and mate in comments and/or summary. Is a new bug filing indicated here for a missing WM requirement? Which WM(s) can mate use? This only seems to happen on my Dell XPS laptop (laptop #2 below) when running libreoffice writer. It has happened a few times, and this time I was finally able to get some information that may help troubleshoot it, but I really don't know where to begin. When I am in the middle of writing something in libreoffice writer, all of a sudden the screen and keyboard will freeze and everything will become completely unresponsive. If I sit there, and don't touch anything, it seems do just do the same. Usually after a couple of minutes I try to hit ctrl-alt-f1 to go to a terminal, but that doesn't do anything because the keyboard is unresponsive. I also hit alt-f2 to try and reset the plasma display, but that doesn't seem to do anything either. Then all of a sudden KDE resets on its own, and I go back to the sddm login screen. I'd be compelled to the point of distraction and studying logs at both ends to understand the cause. I was trying to configure the two monitor displays and I made the mistake of separating svideo from laptop by a gap. This caused my display to stop working and all I could see were coloured patterns. (This is system settings -> monitor, i.e. systemsettings5) So, how would I reset the display settings? I could see that plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc was updated when I changed the settings. But removing or replacing this file and rebooting didn't solve the problem. Not even removing the whole of .config solved the problem. Eventually I had to move /home/user to /home/user2 and then recreate /home/user. Supplementary question: I find that sometimes when I boot the TV does not display properly, there are coloured lines etc. If I reboot a few times it starts properly. I created a 12G tar archive on another computer using nfs. I then brought that archive back again using sftp. Although the size was correct, the archive was corrupted. sha256 values did not match. When I brought it back by nfs again it was fine. The moral of the story is, don't trust sftp. (p.s. Hello. In my davfs2.conf file I have cache_dir /var/cache/davfs2 cache_size 500 based on the docs = 500 mega. However this is the result of du # du -sh /var/cache/davfs2 15G /var/cache/davfs2 Any idea where the problem could be? I'm using rsync to send files (19 G) to an external server and lsof is not showing any open file that could justify a so big cache. So far the only way I have found to reduce the size of the cache is to delete the /var/cache/davfs2 folder content. All, I am getting nothing but a dribble of updates from the rit.edu mirror. Is there are problem? I have noticed this over the past week or so. It will literally take 5 minutes to refresh the repo info, and updates take forever. Unfortunately it is the lowest priority mirror in my region, so it is automatically selected most times. What is the best way to change mirror selection (aside from hacking the .repo file in /etc/zypp/repos.d)? It took 41 minutes tonight to download 92M of updates (on a 6MB/s [50Mb/s] connection) -- David C. Hi, I downloaded openSUSE Leap 42.2 DVD ISO and and created bootable flash: sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb sudo fdisk -l # Ensure sdb is empty sudo dd if=openSUSE-Leap-42.2-DVD-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdb Then I booted the flash disk, in the GRUB menu I selected 'More...' and 'Check Installation Media'. After while of processing I got blue screen with red warning saying 'This is not openSUSE Leap 42.2 medium!'. How can I verify, that the ISO was correctly transferred to the flash disk? Hello: I would like to use disk names according to /dev/disk/by-id entries in my grub2 config and initrd image files instead of uuids in Leap 42.2 How to configure grub2 and mkinitrd/dracut to use those? I have set GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true in /etc/default/grub file and run grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg, still there are several lines in boot/grub2/grub.cfg showing uuids of my disks. I also looked at dracut manual but could not find anything regarding disk-id. I've run mkinitrd and it resulted dracut: Stored kernel commandline: dracut: resume=UUID=ac583745-0aa6-4b59-98ab-96d7bd1d7664 dracut: root=UUID=88e3e501-edac-4b4c-bff8-bc52ba8952f2 I want root=/dev/disk/by-id/..... instead of these. I have installed DKMS package. When installing the Nvidia driver, there was an option to register it with DKMS. There was a message that if the kernel is updated in future, Nvidia module will be automatically updated. [opensuse] Recover hardware controlled RAID disks with other computer?

I plan to install openSUSE Leap 42.2 on a HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen8. I have too options to setup RAID 1 on for the disks: 1) Linux software RAID 2) Hardware RAID with the embedded HPE Dynamic Smart Array B120i Controller I want to be prepared for a possible hardware error. I am familiar with software RAID. Even if the mainboard breaks I can take one or both disks to another computer and recover the data with any Linux system. But how is it with the hardware RAID (B120i controller here)? If the mainboard/CPU/controller/whatever breaks, can I use the same strategy (take the disks to another PC without hardware RAID, recover data) or do I need to buy another HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 or compatible server and recover the disks there? What is the main advantage of hardware RAID over software RAID on Linux? (I think performance and that a hardware RAID can automatically boot from the second disk, but I am a newbie in hardware RAID and so not sure.) All. After windows goes into hibernation mode, the computer will not boot into Linux. It stops and asks for root password and drops to command prompt. The only way to reboot into Linux is to start windows to recover from its hibernation mode. After shutting windows down normally, Linux will boot normally. Is this normal behavior? Can any changes be made to recover from Windows hibernation mode? Hello: I have libreoffice 5 (5.2) in Leap 42.2. I have set "export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde4" in both .bashrc and .profile as suggested at https://en.opensuse.org/LibreOffice. If I start libreoffice in a terminal libreoffice user interface is set to KDE4. If I start libreoffice using KDE3 start menu, libreoffice user interface is set to something else (gnome or LO default?). Why my setting in .bashrc and .profile disregarded when I start libreoffice using start menu? How to change this to start LO with KDE4 user interface? First of all, I am not trying to find a video editor. I just want to cut video files in half in order to send them to a family member oversees. Thanks to the help of list members and ongoing discussions about video editors I have read multiple man pages etc. googled around and have seen to it that i have multiple editors installed. I have chosen WeTransfer for the transport which only allows a maximum of 2 gigabyte per session. The video files are all approximately 4 gigabyte and I need a simple method to cut these MOV files in half. Looking at video editors in alphabetical order Avidemux, ffmpeg, kdenlive and Openshot I am just looking for a program that just cuts the 4Gb videos in half. ffmpeg seems the most logical candidate but finding the right command line sequence is problematic. [opensuse] Setting NumLock to On During logon

Hi, I switched from OS13.2 to Leap 42.2 a few days ago. Now I'm having the annoying problem that at logon I have to press numlock to enable the numbers-block on the keyboard of my laptop. In the BIOS the numlock is ON. When I boot, the numlock is on, also when grub is active. But after that, the numlock-led goes out, until I manually press the numlock button. In Yast/Hardware/systemkeyboard/advanced I did try to set the numlock to yes, but that didn't work. And it was set to BIOS, so it should have worked. Am I missing something ? I read the thread of about a year ago, but that was about numlock at boot. I hated it when Windows10 did that, and I considered myself lucky I was running Linux at home. I don't recall explicitly selecting to install it. IMHO, it should have it's own 'package group' or 'pattern' instead of being pulled in with anything else. Hi ! Unexpectedly I've got this warning on one of the servers: SSH warning: Permissions 0640 for '/etc/ssh/ssh_host_xxx_key' are too open Because of this, ssh daemon have not written any logs. I have fail2ban installed from the beginning and checking log showed that it continuously banned many IPs. Have no idea when this happens. Quite strange since I never changed permissions of these files, only installed syslog-ng instead of default logger, and limited log file size to 100MB. Does it mean server was somehow compromised ? PS. Usually SSH root login shows message "last successful login from ***" or "last failed login from ***". Now there are no such message. Hi, sometimes when I use chkstat --system to correct permissions on my system i get this output: kumiko:~ # chkstat --system bad permissions line NNTPSERVER=news:2 [normal chkstat output deleted] To me that looks like a buffer overflow that makes chkstat treat the shell environment as input. [opensuse] How to enable raid 1 in LEap 42.2?

Hello: I have installed openSUSE Leap 42.2 on a standalone hard disk. Then I connected to the system 2 other hard disks which have several raid 1 (mirror) arrays. When I boot Leap 42.2 it doesn't activate the raid arrays. How can I enable raid (mdraid) in Leap 42.2? In yast services manager I see mdadm-grow-continue@, mdadm-last-resort@, mdmon@, mdmonitor services, all of which are in disabled/inactive state. I don't know what they are for and which one I should enable (if any of them at all). Hi Similar to my keys not being mapped (but oh so different). (The LED isn't broken because it works in Windows) so I assume that LED is using a different scancode to the standard one? [opensuse] No IPv4 duplicate address detection (DAD)

One thing I've noticed is that when connected via Ethernet & DHCP, openSUSE 42.2 does not use duplicate address detection (RFC 5227) when bringing the connection up. DAD is used to avoid IP address conflicts. On the other hand, Windows 10 does use it. However, DAD is used on 42.2 for link local connections, where it is mandatory, so the code for doing it is there. Any idea why Linux doesn't use DAD on IPv4 DHCP? It's also mandatory on IPv6, using ICMP6 Neighbor Discovery. When DAD is used, the computer will arp it's assigned address, but with 0.0.0.0 as the source address. [opensuse] network manager system default setup

Hello: I noticed that network-manager configured networks are different for different users. I would like to make a default system setup and I want that network-manager offers every user the same choices. I would like to setup some default connections as admin. All users should see the same default connections, able to start and stop those connections but not able to modify the connections (add new connection or remove connection). (That is, I would like to imitate the previous smpppd/kinternet/ifup combo behavior with nm.) How to do this in Leap 42.2? Does it matter which nm-applet is run (kde or gtk)? Links to good network manager manuals or howtos are also welcomed.
