[opensuse] Leap 42.2 boot/kdm4 num lock on
Hello: In openSUSE Leap 42.2 I want the num lock to be switched on either during boot or when kdm4 login manager starts. That is when I have to give my password I want the num lock to be turned on. Currently it's turned off when kdm4 login screen appears. I tried to change this by: 1) in yast sysconfig editor Hardware/Keyboard/KBD_NUMLOCK setting to yes. This only gave error message "Cannot determine service state, systemd service does not exist: kbd". The setting has been changed to yes but it has no effect. 2) I changed /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc file: I added a line Numlock=On at the end of [X-*-Greeter] section. This has no effect either. How can I have num lock turned foe my kdm4 login screen? I wanted to change num lock setting in the BIOS but it has not such option. There was a thread not many months ago talking about a similar issue. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

I've not tested. Could it be case-sensitive?

NumLock=On always works for me, but I don't add a line. I change the existing one in the shipped kdmrc file, on the line following "# Default is Keep". Also, I'm pretty sure I have no PCs lacking a firmware NUM state that is set to ON.

If it's not a laptop, return it to place of purchase if you can. Its firmware is defective. If you can't, contact its manufacturer for a firmware update that isn't defective. Whether the LED is maintained in sync with the actual state is another matter. It's not unusual that I find them mismatched. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. Thanks, Felix and others. Yes it's case-sensitive. I changed it to NumLock=On and now it works.

I checked again all my BIOS setting but there's no one for NumLock status. I can clearly remember that in other BIOSes I've seen this option. But I guess it doesn't matter. After turning on the computer NumLock light becomes on and only during Leap 42.2 boot it's turned off. It seems that loading system turns it off.

In KDE3 I "always" have it mismatched. Thanks again, Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Given that, maybe the firmware is "smart", and automatically remembers if it was turned on by the user /during/ setup?
only during Leap 42.2 boot it's turned off. It seems that loading system turns it off. I think you can thank the kernel for that anachronism. :-(

In KDE3 I "always" have it mismatched. Is KControl's keyboard setting set to turn on? What's its usual state on your vttys?
KDE3 remains my primary DE. LED is on now. Maybe setting KBD_NUMLOCK="yes" in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard would help you? It's a first boot edit I make after every new OS installation, unless it's a laptop. If it was up to me, every keyboard with separate cursor pad and NUM pad would have no ability to be out of NUM=on state. It's unfortunate that the original IBM PC AT keyboard had not 100 keys, differing from the 101 replacement of its original only in absence of a NUM key and possibility to have NUM pad ever in an off state. :-( -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." No, because I don't have KDE5/plasma5. Furthermore NumLock is turned on if I login to my session, my question was about the login manager. Thanks, Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ok, sorry about that, didn;t read close enough and i'm on tumbleweed. I checked my BIOS and I also do not have a setting to change/set Numlock either but numlock is on when kdm is loaded and awaiting input and flicks off and back on when i actually log in. When I run Yast/Hardware/System Keyboard Layout and press <Expert Settings>, it comes up (in the Startup State box) as "Num Lock On" and the drop down box is set to "BIOS settings". Have you checked the setting in Yast / System using /etc/sysconfig Editor Hardware/Keyboard/KBD_NUMLOCK ? Here's whats in my kdmrc related to numlock in the Greetings section. # What to do with the Num Lock modifier for the time the greeter is running: # "Off" - turn off # "On" - turn on # "Keep" - do not change the state # Default is Keep #NumLock=Off
Thanks,
Istvan
