[opensuse] Cannot upgrade to/install 42.3
Hi all, This afternoon - after a lengthy backup process of /home - I tried to upgrade from 42.2. to 42.3. The installer media is an USB stick. Shortly after beginning the process it stuck at the wifi driver, which is iwlwifi. Tried several times, to no avail. Then I tried to install instead of upgrade, with the same result. I downloaded 42.3 with metalink which automatically checks the integrity - at least this said on the page. What else can I do to have 42.3? Thanks, Albert
Hi Albert,
Did you try the netinstall or full DVD? I've personally not had a lot of
success booting into netinstall ISOs on laptops. The DVD image usually works
just fine, though.
Failing that, I suppose you could do a live update? Do a `snapper create`,
back up /etc/zypp/repos.d, change the repo URLs from 42.2 to 42.3, then
`zypper dup` (preferably in a TTY or tmux/screen session).

Best regards,
Carmen

Hi, It is a full DVD ISO on a stick. Live update would be OK, but there have been net outages recently. So it is a bit risky. Albert

I don't think upgrading via installation medium really fixes that problem,
either.
Unless you mean internet outages? In which case it's not really a problem,
because zypper downloads all packages before installing anything. Even so,
you could do `zypper dup --download-only` to prepare.
Using Snapper to create a btrfs snapshot beforehand or using CloneZilla to
create a full backup of your disk is probably the best way to have a backup in
case something goes wrong during the upgrade.
Best regards,
Carmen

Disable the WiFi on the Bios or with the button. If you need network, use cable. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

I use cable, but did not disable wifi in BIOS. I'll find it. This an ASUS laptop, so Fn+F2 would turn on and off wifi, but not in my case. I always had wifi issues with this machine. I can make it recognized on by boot then put to sleep then wake up. Weird, but this is the case. Albert
