[opensuse] boot32.efi for 64 bits processor and Leap

Hello, We see more and more often very small but powerfull computers, atom multicore 64 bits, but with UEFI 32 bits firmware. I have one now ("It Works TW891" paid 129€ - 32Gb ssd + 2Gb ram, runs almost perfectly windows 10 32bits or Debian 64bits). these computers can be installed with 64 bits distros, but they need absolutely a 32 bits loader. Right now I on ly know of the hybrid debian 32/64bits dvd to be able to install. Notice that *only the loader* have to be 32bits, the generic name being boot32.efi copying a generic loader to the Leap EFI folder allows booting, and probably installing (I couldn't make all the tests), but the generic one gives only a grub prompt, not handy. Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Hi Folks, There seems to be a flurry of IPv6 talk going on, maybe this is time for me to bring up the rogue router problem again? I asked about this a couple of times over the years but could never find anyone to comment on it. First, here's the RFC that describes the problem: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6104 Rogue routers have affected me personally at a customer's site. This is a large, professionally managed, dual-stacked network with a number of v4 class B addresses and thousands of hosts. Subnets seem to be /20 CIDR in size, so there are plenty of "neighbors" on any given subnet. I've encountered the situation where misconfigured Windows systems will advertise themselves as an IPv6 router. They then happily accept traffic and drop it all silently on the floor. This problem doesn't seem to bother other Windows boxes too much, but it absolutely kills SSH connections. SSH preferentially tries IPv6 port 22, which when sent to a dumb Windows box results in very long hangups and connection failures. My workaround for my cohort of Linux desktops and servers was to disable IPv6 for both ssh and sshd. This will work for as long as the host network supports dual stacks, but eventually? Then there's the issue of intentional MITM attacks using this vector. If a bad actor has physical access to a subnet, or has compromised a host on that subnet, your goose is cooked. This link mentions some mitigations, but they're quite technical and may require hardware support. https://community.infoblox.com/t5/IPv6-Center-of-Excellence/Holding-IPv6-Ne… So, what is the threat to a home IPv6 user who has WiFi and an Internet of Things with minimal/non-existent security? I personally feel safer behind a nice natted IPv4 firewall with ACL rules between my copper and WiFi subnets. I just feel that I have more control of the situation with a simpler network. Still... kdenlive - Well... crashes too often. I can mark the cuts, but it does not display what I'm cutting. And only one sound track. HandBrake - no edit. Avidemux - one sound track only. Kino - abandonware. Lightworks ?? The machine has several repos aktivated (that are as it seems available in their 42.2 version). It has Nivida proprietary driver and is 64 bit. Is it sufficient to run zypper dup with all corresponding repos changed to have a soft migration experience? Where do I run it? In a window or in tty1? Hello, I try to copy/paste text from a "cat /etc/apache2/vhosts.d" on my leap server (through ssh). the goal is to write a document page on Pmwiki, but I get the same problem pasting in Thunderbird I'm in kde, also Leap 42.1 example below. I can't have the <Directory and /> on the same line, when I can have it there: <Directory /> (same for the other lines) the two of them are UTF8. I suspect some invisible character. How can I get rid of this annoying thing? Note: I don't know how to send you an example, Thunderbird fix the problem :-). Hi, I've upgraded to Leap 42.2 a week ago and I'd like to share my experiences. It was 90% successful but I have two big pain points: 3D and hibernate. Both features have degraded slowly over the past months (it started with Leap 41.1, 13.2 was very stable for years). Newer kernels tend to be less stable. 4.1 worked pretty good, 4.7 didn't work at all. I used "zypper dup" to upgrade my distribution from Leap 41.1 and that worked well, despite the fact that the wiki wasn't updated for Leap 42.2. But the instructions for 13.x -> 42.1 were easy enough to understand, so I could translate them myself. First boot worked, display manager failed. I had some trouble downloading the correct NVIDIA driver. I have a ASUS GTX 1050 Ti, so I needed 375.20. When I had that, the display manager (sddm?) started working. There were a couple of updates, so I installed those. I'm using KDE. Clicking on "Logout" did nothing. journalctl reported that sddm-greeter was crashing. I tried again, same result. Yesterday, I installed updates again and sddm-greeter refused to work afterwards. I had to reboot manually from the console. This sucks. From my point of view, sddm seems to be more of a problem than anything else. Not being able to do anything from the UI leaves me helpless and frustrated. I understand that Mesa updates replace important 3D libraries and sddm needs them but this piece of software is so important that it should fall back to something useful when it can't use 3D. That said, after updates, a lot of KDE software, chrome and chromium started to act up until I reinstalled the NVIDIA drivers. The error messages were mostly useless (that's what the KDE error reporter told me) or I didn't get any message at all. I'm not sure what less educated users would do in my situation. Not being able to reboot after installing security patches shouldn't happen. It makes me wonder whether I really need those patches. I also have a lot of graphics garbage on the screen after resume from hibernate to disk. That started with Leap 42.1 some time in September, I think. Window frames, Flash web content and desktop icon texts are most vulnerable. My guess is that the KDE 3D code is broken somehow but I don't know how to find out what is happening. Frustrating again. Also, when this happens, I can't disable 3D effects in systemsettings5 since that crashes immediately when I try to open the effects. During hibernate, I get messages on the (text) console that "BUG: sleeping function called from invalid context at ../kernel/locking/rwsem.c:21" Out of 20 attempts to hibernate, 4 fail to resume with the message: "ACPI: Hardware changed while hibernated, success doubtful" Something in the kernel must be broken since my hardware didn't change. And there is another "BUG: scheduling while atomic: systemd-sleep/.../..." Please let me know if I can provide more information to track down these bugs. Regards, -- Aaron "Optimizer" Digulla a.k.a. [opensuse] LVM / software raid / dynamic raid? For a backup server of stable data.

This email might be offtopic, not sure. I have a minimum of 10 TB of data I want to consolidate off of multiple USB drives to free them up. The data is almost exclusively static and rarely accessed, but I need to maintain it. I have 2 copies of this data in most cases currently, but it is spread around multiple USB3 drives. (I have dozens of them). The plan for now is just to consolidate one copy of the data. I bought a 10 TB SATA drive to hold a first big chunk. I expect it will get filled quickly as I start to consolidate my backup copies, so I want to be able to grow the volume holding the data by adding disks to the pool and extending the volume. I suspect I will also want to have more resiliency at some point. (ie. raid 0 => raid 5 => raid 6) If I truly had confidence in this storage pool I might eliminate both copies of the data that is on USB drives currently. But even with raid 6, I think I would worry about a total LVM or Volume crash Or even a user error! Even though I know LVM and MDraid somewhat, I don't know if is "dynamic" and "reliable" enough for what I want. And advice out there? Goals: - Create a fileserver that I can add drives to from time to time and grow it's capacity. Probably 10TB drives so I don't have too many spindles in the mix. When bigger drives become available, I'd prefer to use them, so being stuck will all the same size drives is a negative. - Performance is non-critical. I've used LTO-4 tapes to do this in the past, but I hope online is a better choice now. With LTO-4, once I had a new data set (typically 100GB - 2TB) I would make a backup with tape and put it away for the time I needed to ensure I still had it. [opensuse] How to set VGA mode after boot, like bootloader does? (for 'kexec' consistency)

I found that it's the boot loader that sets the initial screen mode before the kernel is loaded. It is often set again during boot by programs that set the console keyboard and font -- and seems to be separate from the mode one is in during a graphical boot. I'm trying to figure out how to set that VGA mode from "userland" (running as root) just before jumping to a new kernel with kexec. If I don't, kexec starts the new kernel in a non-deterministic mode that displays mostly garbage on the screen up until the screen's mode is reset by console kbd+font progs. Alternatively -- I've also seen the screen go blank for the entire boot process until the system displays the login prompt. Does anyone know how to do set the VGA mode from userland so kexec will start in a known state? Both went online as soon as each was powered up, despite the line in fstab being deactivated! No, I don't mean mounted somewhere in /media via the desktop. No. They were mounted in the places that figured in the fstab file! I have a ThinkPad E520 notebook computer. With earlier versions of openSUSE, I was able to disable the touch pad with a script in the .kde4/Autorun directory, which disabled the touch pad. This doesn't seem to work with 42.2. Even running it manually doesn't work. How do I turn off the #$%*&#$ touch pad??? Hi, I have a POS system using Opensuse. I just got a touchscreen which has an "Elo TouchSystems, Inc. Elo TouchSystems IntelliTouch 2500U" touch-input-device. lsusb : Bus 002 Device 004: ID 04e7:0007 Elo TouchSystems 2500U IntelliTouch® Touchmonitor Interface The POS system is now running OS13.1. Since this version reached it's end of life, I was planning to install Leap 42.2 so I installed that on a spare PC to test. The touchscreen default has the X-axis reversed, so I used xinput set-prop 'Elo TouchSystems, Inc. Elo TouchSystems IntelliTouch 2500U' 'Evdev Axis Inversion' 1, 0 on the OS13.1 system. I added this to the end of /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.common.That works in the tests I did. [opensuse] Three Seconds

Hi, I upgraded to Leap 42.2 from 13.2 about a week ago by complete format and reinstall. But I didn't have time to install my printer and scanner since I had to leave to travel for work. Last night, I installed the scanner and the printer when I returned home from my trip. The scanner works great, but the printer isn't working properly. Specifically, the printer won't shut down and stay shut off. If I shut it off via the power button, the printer will turn on automatically after three seconds. I have tried to install the printer with three different drivers to see if that would fix the problem, but it doesn't. I uninstalled the printer in yast, and that didn't fix the problem even after a reboot. At present, I have no printer installed but it will start automatically when I boot Leap 42.2. If I try to shut the printer down, three seconds later it will power up again. The OS is Leap 42.2 with KDE Plasma 5.7. The printer is an HP Deskjet 970Cxi. Thanks in advance for your help. Hi Folks, I have a requirement to display a click-through warning banner on my desktops to require that console users acknowledge consent to be monitored. Before Leap and sddm I was able to add a phrase in /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup that called zenity, which displayed the warning and provided the yes/no buttons. Alas, with Leap using sddm this no longer works. the Xstartup file exists, but isn't called by /etc/sddm.conf. I could probably ditch sddm and go back to xdm, but it would be nice to stay with the flow. Does anyone have any suggestions? I guess this isn't new, but I've only just today seen it on 13.1 and 42.2 - firefox 49.0.x I have something along the following: <select> <option>Donald</option> <option class="abc">Tom</option> <option class="abc">Dick</option> <option class="abc">Harry</option> </select> In my case, css class "abc" looks like this: option.abc { padding-left: 1em; color: blue; } I.e. the entries Tom, Dick and Harry should be indented on the left, and be displayed in blue. With ff49, this is completely ignored. I don't know when it changed - in ff34 it's still working. On laptop #1, which I upgraded with zypper dup to 42.2 instead of doing a clean install, I was having some trouble with some multimedia files, so I went to the sticky in the forums and followed the multimedia installation guide to see if it would sort things out. Leap 42.2 running XFCE. Left running all night to check, but display powered off. This morning it would not respond to the keyboard.The TV said there was no signal in the cable. Via ssh did not see load on CPU nor messages. I killed xscreensaver. [...] Oops. Wrong. ssh was on the wrong computer :-/ I disconnected the video cable, then connected again. ctrl-alt-f1 and back. Nothing. Then ctrl-alt-backspace. Got login prompt. Not nice. I have disabled for now screen power saving features. Ideas? I suspect xscreensaver. I have to try again with it on remote. Hi, after doing a clean Leap:42.2 install and importing my user and old home directory from 42.1, I have ugly fonts. I first thought it was firefox but opera looks the same. See cropped screenshot from firefox: http://pasteboard.co/2Tdo3TMF2.jpg I can vaguely remember a similar problem when I first installed 42.1 with my nVidia card installed with the nouveau driver but I experienced so many problems I took out the card. This is in plasma5 kde. I've enabled antialiasing and tried different system fonts and if I force font dpi the fonts just get smaller and bigger. [opensuse] kvm vs. xen vs. virtualbox

Thoughts anyone? I run virtualbox, the version I get from oracle instead of the repos. I run 3 different machines on it - windows 10, windows 7, and xp. The only thing I don't like is that the vdi file tends to get big, which is fine for my desktop, but doesn't work for my laptop. On my laptop, then the machine becomes pretty slow. How can I stop FF from being that "clever" and stick to what I type? Hi, I have a server on opensuse 42.1 and my root partition keeps getting full. The first time I just deleted everything in /tmp /var/log and also all the snapper snapshots which cleared it up (11% use), but this time I am still 55% full! My set up is 2 128GB ssds in a raid mirror there is a logical volume group here vg0 then there is a 24GiB lv for swap, 20GiB lv for / and 67.77GiB for /home I notice the recommended / partition on 42.1 is 40gb not 20 like previous opensuse versions, but this was an upgrade from 13.1 through 13.2 then 42.1 so was always the same. I said to myself "I know! I could just use yast partitoner to shrink the logical volume for home by 20GiB then expand / by 20 to make it 40GiB" but NO! Yast cannot alter the size of BtrFS (root) or XFS (home) filesystems even though they are the default configuration! argh! I thought it was too simple (always a catch)! Does anyone know a way around this before my server refuses to boot again due to 99% full / ? Help would be much appreciated. We're looking at upgrading some laptops in the office, and as Toshiba appears to have stopped making laptops, we're looking for a new make. Lenovo's consumer range seems to be good value for money and we don't really need the sturdy/pricey Lenovo Thinkpads. Lenovo B70-80 - after clearing out the Windows stuff and fiddling with the BIOS, the installation over pxe+ssh+http went without a hitch. afaict, all hardware is supported, sound, wifi, all in all it looks good. However - to hit a function key (f1,f2,f3,f4...), you need to press "Fn" and the function key .... closing a window with alt-f4 now becomes a three-key job, switching to a console means pressing four keys .... What happen? I am a noob kde wise and for desktop usage. I just started mc midnight commander from inside an empty konsole as a normal user on a kde desktop. Then eventually exited it via f10 keypress. Whole konsole vanished. I try to fire up a new konsole from kde start menu, be it by entering konsole in the search area or by navigaing recently used apps and such stuff. I never get a normal konsole any more but always populated with a midnight commander inside. What the heck? Hi, I have a headless virtual machine (just apache running and i connect via ssh) with Leap 42.1. Thus no Mesa or X installed. This maschine I wanted to upgrade to Leap 42.2. So, I replaced the 42.1 repos with the repos for 42.2. However, a "zypper dup --no-recommends" tries to pull Mesa with quite some other graphic related libX* and libdrm* packages. I dug around a bit and IMHO python-gobject has now a dependency on all the graphic stuff. On the other hand snapper-zypp-plugin needs python-gobject. Now my question: How to upgrade from 42.1 to 42.2 without installing Mesa but keep snapper? Hell dear listers, I've been away for a while and now see that leap 42.2 has been released. On my leap 42.1 I had some problems using the optimus graphics card (an intel/nvidia mix) which I somehow could resolve using suse-prime. Also the Asus touchpad on a Skylake machine does not work as the kernel doesn't recognize it. My questions: - Does 42.2 support Optimus intel/nvidia now or is suse-prime still needed? If so, will it simply work after a zypper dup to 42.2? - Are the new touchpads now recognized and working; any experiences? - and in general: can I just change the repositories to 42.2 and then run a zypper dup? Or do I have to consider/do some special things? Would you recommend upgrading to 42.2 or would that just be versionitis? Thanks for your input! [opensuse] Toshiba Satellite Laptop & UEFI Secure Boot Fail

I am trying to install Leap 42.2 on a Toshiba Satellite i7 laptop that is a few years old. The only way I can get the 42.2 USB key image I created on my main 42.2 desktop to boot is to shut Secure Boot off in the UEFI firmare on this laptop. If it's enabled I get this error message programmed into the firmware: "Boot failure: A proper digital signature was not found. One of the files on the selected boot device was rejected by the secure boot feature." So essentially I am being forced to use Windows if I want secure boot. If I want to use openSUSE, I have to downgrade the entire security of the machine. Is there any way around this? For years I kept reading about how great UEFI is and how it's the future of booting. But I have dealt with 100-fold more problems helping people (and myself) get out of UEFI booby traps, with crappy vendor UEFI firmware that is buggy and not Linux-friendly, vendor lock-in, bad EFI vars stuck in the firmware that prevent the computer from booting at all, and firmware updates or power loss that clear the NVRAM which then completely wipes out the EFI vars and the system is left unbootable. It that last example, the user would have to run a Linux rescue disk and run a series of commands to re-write the variables back into the nvram. What average user knows how to do that? So we have some additional security at the cost of reliability. I never had any of these issues with BIOS-based PC's, and as soon as UEFI computers hit the market the openSUSE forums lit up with 100's-1000's of people writing in about all types of problems that all were all due to UEFI. It seems to me that all UEFI did is create additonal variables with people's computers that could go awry, and it's bloated and overly complicated to just simply boot a computer. It's an OS to boot the OS. Manufacturers appeared to take whatever UEFI standard that was created and bastardize it. There needs to be a consortium that specifically focuses on actually making manufacturers adhere to the exact UEFI standard if they want to use the UEFI name and logo, and make it so users are not locked into using Windows only. It looks to me that UEFI has taken the same direcion as ACPI. Hardware vendors writing the specs of their hardware to interop with Microsoft's non-standard driver programming. Hi, I have configured a dummy interface that will be used as a bridge member called mgmt0 that can survive server reboots but not service network restart Here you are my config files 1.- To ensure consistent names between reboots /etc/udev/rules.d/71-persistent-mgmt0-net.rules SUBSYSTEM=="net", KERNEL=="dummy0", NAME="mgmt0" 2.- Load the dummy module on system boot /etc/modules-load.d/dummy.conf # Load dummy.ko at boot dummy 3.- To configure the interfaces members of the bridge /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth1 STARTMODE='auto' ONBOOT='yes' DEVICE='eth1' BRIDGE='external' BOOTPROTO='none' HOTPLUG='no' /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-mgmt0 STARTMODE='auto' ONBOOT='yes' DEVICE='mgmt0' BRIDGE='external' BOOTPROTO='none' HOTPLUG='no' 4 .- To configure the bridge STARTMODE='auto' ONBOOT='yes' BOOTPROTO='static' BRIDGE='yes' BRIDGE_FORWARDDELAY='0' BRIDGE_PORTS='eth1 mgmt0' BRIDGE_STP='off' IPADDR='X.X.X.X/24' GATEWAY='X.X.X.254' When I reboot the server the interface external gets the IP address: # ifconfig external external Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX inet addr:X.X.X.X Bcast:136.225.185.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 And the bridge can be seen: # brctl show bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces external 8000.5820b1e47ef8 no eth1 mgmt0 The problem appears when service network restart is used as it removes the interface mgmt0 that triggers the problem as if the mgmt0 the bridge external cannot be configured properly PS: Interface and bridge can be restored by removing the dummy module, adding it again and do a ifup external Any idea how to fix/workaround this? John, I used to be part of the QA team at a end of life PC recycler (I was an outside consultant that did quarterly audits of their process). Used(end of life) PCs were tested and resold. 30,000 PCs a month. If an overall PC failed and wasn't easily repaired the good parts were pulled and stocked for repairs of other PCs. Every drive was wiped with at least a 7 pass wipe. Any that had hardware issues where pulled and run through a mechanical shredder. The 7 pass wipe was done with a Linux boot and shred was invoked by a custom written control program that documented the process. The Linux log files were scanned and if the drive had issues it was tagged for physical destruction. Data security (destruction) was the primary selling feature of this company, and it was my job to ensure no data got through the wiping process. I saw the wiping results and the error reports. In your world, the facility would be buying hard drives to replace all the failed drives coming in the otherwise good computers they were recycling. In mine, they scrapped so many PCs that they had a hard drive stock room with thousands of drives in it that got pulled from the PCs that weren't worth repairing. They sold off excess used hard drive stock. SATA cables they did NOT try to re-use/salvage; simply not reliable enough. If a PC came in with a bad cable, they put in a new one. [opensuse] Monitoring WiFi

Hi, It's a bit off-topic, but I don't know where else to ask, so I try here ;-) I would like to monitor some WiFi-networks. With that I mean, check if I can associate with the SSID and get an ip-address. If that works, all is good, and dis-associate. If it fails send an alert (email) and/or log it (e.g. cacti). Try again some time later. etc., ad infinitum ;-) To do this I would need some device like a raspberry pi with a LAN (to send alerts) and a WiFi interface. Is there software that does this ? To be sure: You branched the scanner (and it is seen by lsusb) You went to yast and went to hardware submenu, choose scanner and did configure the scanner? It is seen there. Then you were trying to scan with scanlite and it did not work. Did you try other software for scan than scanlite and which version of scanlite do you have installed (from what vendor / repo?) Did you by any chance have a special repo activated for OCR software from buildservice? This will install some libraries that may not work. If not go following repo for 42.1 (if you do not want to install 42.2 right away) and install the kernel from kernel stable. [opensuse] kwin_x11 causing full cpu load

Some hours ago there were some leap 42.2 updates for some kde or graphics stuff. I think I remote ssh'd into the machine and zypper ref zypper up and eventually saw some cpu load via top After the zypper up zypper ps showed lot of graphics stuff from the real running machine, so I systemctl restart displaymanager.service or its real name. By coincidence I own this scanner "Canon Light 210". It worked perfectly with 42.1 original kernel and as well with the 4.4 kernel from kernel stable. I employ the 4.4 because of a wlan problem with the 4.1 and the Lenovo X201, not because of the scanner. Hi all, The above mentioned USB scanner used to work - except the buttons on it - up to oS 13.2. SDB says it is fully compatible using genesys driver. Canon says it is not supported at all on linuxes. I could not make it work on any of the Leap systems. The hardware is correctly recognized, but neither Skanlite, nor Xsane work, only an invalid argument message and frightening noise from the scanner are returned. Interestingly, Debian 8 and Win7 virtual machines have no problems with it. So I suspect the kernel 4.x has some problem with it. Am I right? Can you suggest some workaround? Thanks, Albert

[opensuse] [42.2] krdc and kwallet

Hi everyone, yesterday I did the update from 42.1 to 42.2, and since then I have a problem between krdc (16.08.2-1.1) and kwallet (kwallet-tools-5.26.0-2.1.x86_64, kwallet-tools-lang-5.26.0-2.1.x86_64, kwalletd5-5.26.0-2.1.x86_64, kwalletd5-lang-5.26.0-2.1.noarch, kwalletmanager5-16.08.2-1.1.x86_64, libkwalletbackend5-5-5.26.0-2.1.x86_64, libsvn_auth_kwallet-1-0-1.9.4-1.1.x86_64). Looking via kwallet, I see the username/passwordcpairs for KRDC, but KRDC does not use them correctly - either the windows closes immediately or I get "wrong username or password". Do I need to install additional kwallet packages? I also see a kwalletmanager-15.04.3-9.1 - is this required for the communication between krdc and kwallet? There are a bazillion dependencies when I do a "ldd $(which krdc)", but no kwallet. Having to manually go through this exercise is a RPITA. [opensuse] Simple backuping user data to external storage with removable media drive

Looking for simple ways, e.g. maybe some script, rsync, schedule with at or cronsomething, to backup a bunch of files onto some removable media drive e.g. attached via usb to a leap 42.2 machine for instance. Any good pointers on what would be an easy, scriptable and automatable way to achieve this? I have some long path names so I probably need to stick to ext-something on the removable drive as well. The files all belong to a certain username on the linux machine, or maybe a group, but nothing really complex. The script and the tools would hopefully run as this normal username on the leap machine. I wonder if all this stuff about mounting the removable media and writing to it, later unmounting and ejecting the removable media can be achieved with a normal restricted nonroot user and nonroot scripts. I guess rsync with some mirror method to only freshen and update and add to the removable media would suffice for my needs. Maybe longer term stuff, would be as these removable media would be taken to some secure place safe or vault, that the media need another encryption layer underneath the ext-something. Is there any cool solution already out there for me to use? I am new to this. Sorry to post this here but I've ran into a wall & I'm hoping one of you guys can help. I'm working on an old medical machine that runs Red Hat 8 & has kernel 2.6.15. I have been searching for an older version of the installer that will work with the Radeon 9800 AGP card, but I have had no luck. AMD's newest available version doesn't support Red Hat 8, so the installer fails. All the old links to drivers on their site are broken. If anyone has a copy of it or can point me to a place where I can download it I would be massively in your debt. I wonder what service(s) and daemons I need to reload or restart to make this /etc/polkit-default-privs.local file and its settings to be applied, as I even restarted the whole kde gui a.k.a. also even issued a ctrl+alt+backspace to frefresh the graphics driver or was it just to recycle the x-whatever layers of the linux. hello, I have to convert to html5 (mp4) a lot of videos from various cameras. I use a script and handbrake http://dodin.info/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=Doc.UsingHtml5 but the result is the same using the handbrake gui and default setups. * the original video is the "avi" file. * the m4v file is from handbrake * the mp4 file is from ffmpeg ffmpeg -i Photo_117.avi -aspect 16:9 -b:v 6000k Photo_117.mp4 result, for some files (not all, far from it): * with VLC or mplayer, the m4v file have an image but no sound * with VLC, the mp4 file have sound but no image!! with mplayer this file plays fine but my goal is to have files playing in any html5 browser. I've installed Leap 42.2 in VirtualBox on openSUSe 13.1. One thing I've noticed is it's very sluggish, sometimes to the point of almost frozen. Anyone else notice this? I saw on a thread a suggestion to "turn off KDE bling." I googled "KDE bling", and there are lots of hits, but in each one, the writer doesn't define "KDE bling." He only talks about something else related to it, and both the writer and the reader are assumed to already know what "KDE bling" means. Granted I am not super technically savvy, but I have been using openSUSE with KDE for 5 years now, and this is the first time I have encountered the term "KDE bling." [opensuse] Proper way to install debuginfo packages?

Hi there, I'm currently trying to figure out why evince crashes under Xfce in Leap 42.2 and wanted to generate a backtrace, but then realized I don't know how to install the necessary debuginfo packages. In Fedora, I would just run 'debuginfo-install evince' and be done. Is there a similar thing in openSUSE or do I really have to manually enable the debuginfo repos and and install everything until I finally have a meaningful backtrace? Hi, Since a few day(?) we can no longer open ps or eps files with okular and evince. gv still works. We see it on 42.1 and 13.2, but not 13.1. Open any ps or eps file with okular gives an empty page and okular(6579)/okular (Spectre) GSRendererThread::run: Generated image does not match wanted size: [0x0] vs requested [1120x1449] QImage::scaled: Image is a null image invalidaccess -7 evince just crashes with invalidaccess -7 Segmentation fault Can someone else reproduce this problem? Last week I tried creating a postscript file from a .PNG file that I had open with Gwenview. For some reason it didn't work out, it hung and dragged the machine down and I couldn't kill it and had to reboot. Since then, as I reboot the machine each morning, I find that after a few minutes /tmp fills us with a few THOUSAND GS_* files. Most are empty, a few are a round 10K or so. This paralyses other activities. They are owned by 'anton' -- of course. I can't figure out what is causing this. I've delayed starting KDE, and that delays the creation and I've checks, so it isn't a CRON job. I've gone in via systemsettings and I can't see a startup job that would account for this; I only have a dropbox start and a video setting. I run a 'ps' and I can't see what might be responsible. I downloaded the Leap 42.2 ISO file and the sha256 checksum file. However, I cannot reconcile the ISO sha256 checksum with the downloaded checksum. The machine is a 42.1 and I prepared to update to 42.2. To be able to do so it should be up to date. So it was the repo of Nvidia for 42.1 that had problems. I did express myself so badly that nobody could ever have understood. Happens. As the machine was not booted for some weeks, it comes out that for some reasons the nvidia repos changed something (so you get unreadable file in repodata (and an alphanumeric code). After deactivating the nvidia repo (that had also a wrong signature -apparently due to a date validity and renewal) I received to my surprise a single software stack update from opensuse-updates. I think this update (as I missed it since the machine was offline so long) did renew the correct signature or did fix some issue with the nvidia repodata. I did then erase the nvidia repo and paste the url one more time. This time the repo was accepted and duly refreshed. I was also possible to give trust to the signature without being rejected. Once done this, the update did run through. I should have been accurate and describe the error message and the version. My fault. I will try to update when extra and education repos are online (and packman of course). This because it will be much less work. Is there any date when education will be online? According to the release notes for 42.2 https://doc.opensuse.org/release-notes/x86_64/openSUSE/Leap/42.2/, Seamonkey no longer compiles, and thus should be replaced with Tbird/Firefox. However, Seamonkey 2.40 (the latest release) is included in the repository http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/42.2/repo/oss/suse/x86_64/ So I'm curious to know the correct answer @$SUBJ, or to have someone clarify the situation. [opensuse] inactive rsync clients clogging up rsyncd

I have an rsyncd service for mirroring sanesecurity data. Generally it works very well, but occasionally the rsyncd server will get hung up with many rsyncd processes just waiting on (apparently) inactive clients. This can go on for minutes, possibly hours. I'm running rsyncd via xinetd. The 'timeout' parameter for rsyncd.conf doesn't seem to take effect. I have now taken to automatically killing any rsyncd process running for more than 90seconds, which has improved things tremendously. Also, rsyncd seems to ignore my "hosts deny" setting - I tried refusing access to a couple of the most frequently hanging clients, but afaict, rsyncd just ignores "hosts deny". As far as I can tell, duid.xml (/var/lib/wicked/duid.xml) is generated during installation, but at least partially based on an interface MAC address: 00:01:00:01:1f:b8:72:38:00:19:99:4e:1e:98 When testing and re-installing somewhat frequently, it is most annoying to have the duid change all the time. I have to either amend dhcp6.conf or edit the duid directly once the system is installed. [opensuse] Leap 42.2 - Baloo? How to prevent it indexing /run mounted USB drives

I've got 42.2 RC2 on one of my machines. Its a pure vanilla setup. I'm using KDE more extensively than I have in a couple years (I'm normally more CLI only). I just noticed someting (baloo?) is indexing my USB mounted drives. In this case I connected the drive and KDE automounted it under /run. I don't want it to index anything under /run/media/ 1) Is it a bug that it is even indexing /run/media in the first place? 2) I don't see a way to configure baloo under configure desktop. After 3 years of having a server in the cloud with fail2ban on it, it locked me out from my house ISP recently! I had my house's IP in the ignoreip line, but ... Apparently my ISP changed my IP and I had made a typo or two in my password since the IP change. Fortunately my cloud vendor provides console access via a java app so I could log into the console and add me new home IP to the ignore IP line. Just a cautionary note for others, but it was pretty confusing since I could login for a few minutes after reboot, but then re-connecting would be blocked. Card: NVIDIA GF100GL [Quadro 4000] Driver: nouveau, X.org server 7.6_1.18.3 Monitors: Iiyama ProLite B2783QSU Power indicator blue=normal, orange=power-saving DP-1 connected 1440x2560+0+0 DP-2 connected 1440x2560+1440+0 Without the screensaver, Xfce+nouveau is stable, but when the screensaver is turned on, it is not always possible to recover the monitors with a user action such as moving the mouse. Example 1: After some 10+ minutes of inactivity (not timed exactly) both monitors go black with no fading. On clicking the Ctl key I recover only the right monitor. The left monitor stays black with power indicator orange. Example 2: I re-booted the machine and logged in a user. This user does nothing. When the screensaver blanked the monitors, I moved the mouse and this was sufficient to recover both monitors. After 7 hours, moving the mouse was no longer sufficient. The right monitor stays blank, although both monitors show the blue power indicator. I just have to boot from USB because the laptop will not see grub any other way. Has anyone else encountered a stubborn HP laptop that takes something out of the ordinary to boot with a simple MBR setup? The frustrating thing is I can throw the Win10 disk back in and it boots just fine. Nothing explains to my why I can boot from an .iso in legacy mode just fine, but cannot boot from the hard drive the same way. There have been no errors on grub install or on grub.cfg generation (the problem is it is just not seeing grub on the drive to begin with) grub is right where it should be, because choosing "Boot existing OS" brings the grub menu right up and boots to a fully functioning install. Currently I'm working with the Arch .iso given the direct access to grubs command line. Does anybody have any thoughts on what to check to see what is causing the bootloader being missed on the hard drives? In nearly 20 years of Linux, probably 50-100 installs, this is the first time I've ever run into a box that just will not see grub on a hard drive. I've reset bios defaults, pulled all batteries, held the power on to drain any residual power, etc.. and the issue isn't an embedded drive signature the box is trying to boot (it wouldn't like the USB if that were the case.) All Disk Lock and other bios security features are disabled. (the bios is actually a very limited laptop bios with very few settings to complicate things.) It's not a question of the laptop not seeing the drive. I've installed a full plasma/KDE5 setup on the drive, I just have to boot it from a darn USB. Does the braintrust have an tips or diagnostics that may shed light on this issue? -- David C. Is this correct? Looking in the latest tumbleweed snap for 20161108, I see ca-certificates-2+git20151110.c15593c-1.2.noarch.rpm as a new cert package -- but it won't install on 13.2. Why do I need p11-kit-tools to be updated to install updated certs? Also, where would be certs for the past year? (if the date on the rpm-name is to be believed, it wouldn't have any root-certs generated in the last year. Given all the cert problems in the past year, I'd think it would be important to update these. [opensuse] updating system CA to include recent changes: how?

On another list, I was told to: "...check that your system CA set is up to date. There were changes as recently as a week ago..." How do I do this? I looked at owner of "/var/lib/ca-certificates/pem/" and found "ca-certificates-1_201403302107-8.1.2.noarch". It's URL was last updated Nov, 2015 -- nothing sounds like it might contain recent CA updates... (I ran into a us-gov website, that couldn't be trusted due to a self-signed root-cert (that may be valid, I'm told, but I need to update my system CA to find out..). The way they said this seemed like it should be "easy"... HHhhmmm... I have a filesystem mounted on /var that suddenly went read-only early this morning. Surprisingly, syslog-ng is still able to write to /var/log/mail and /var/log/messages? [opensuse] IPv6 with Telekom Speedport W724V

I have a problem with the IPv6 connectivity. The failing server uses openSUSE 42.1 and runs 24/7. The problem is probably caused by the bundled Telekom Speedport W724V router. The Telekom VDSL provider delivers dual (IPv4 and IPv6) connectivity and maybe the router has IPv6 privacy extensions enabled. But I like to have a solution without exchanging the router. The problem is, that openSUSE 42.1 loosed IPv6 connectivity after some time (probably after ~1 day, but I am not sure). IPv4 connectivity stays intact. For testing I use www.heise.de only with IPv6. [opensuse] dual boot installation

I'm trying to install Leap 42.1 on a new Windows 7 laptop. The Yast installer (from verified DVD) will only give me the option of wiping the hard drive and installing Linux without Windows. I'm wondering if there is any way to keep Windows, and dual boot with Linux. Previous installations have always given me that option. Win 7, UEFI, 500 Gig hard drive. Original partitions: System_drv 200 mb, ntfs Windows7_OS, 428.18 gb ntfs Lenovo_D, 25gb ntfs (unlabelled OEM partition) 12.38 Gb When the initial installation attempt failed to give me the option of keeping Windows, I shrank the Windows 7 partition using the Windows disk partioner, so that the Win 7 partition is 214.64 gb, and 213.54 gb is unallocated. The linux installer will not use the unallocated space. I get the same result trying to install 13.2. Installation proceeds normally, until the partition proposal, where I abort. Machine is Lenovo, dualcore i3, 1.7 ghz, 4 gb memory. Is it possible to install a dual boot on this machine? Thanks for your help! I bought some 32G micro SD cards on eBay, and on advice I check to see if they were all actually 32G. There's a program available under Linux called "f3". I'm running 3.5.0 http://oss.digirati.com.br/f3/ What it does is write a pattern, step and repeat To quote from the man page <quote> F3 (Fight Flash Fraud or Fight Fake Flash) tests the full capacity of a flash card (flash drive, flash disk, pendrive). It writes to the card and then checks if can read it. It will assure you haven't been sold a card with a smaller capacity than stated. When writing to flash drive, f3write fills the filesystem with 1GB files named N.h2w, where N is a number (i.e. /[0-9]+/). </quote> The the f3read program verifies. You have control over the starting and ending numbers, so if you think the 32G drive is actually a 8G you can skip the first 6G and just do 7G to 9G. I found that indeed the 32G labelled chips were actually 8G. There's a tool that re-writes the chip ID info and so I made sure that theses 8G chips said they were 8G. And I got my money back. FOSS wins out again. There are free version of similar tools for Windows as well. ------------------- I do however have a question. Running these tests takes a lot of time. I'm wondering if there is a quicker way. I'm wondering if there is a file system whereby the mkfs builds a FS structure all the way down to the supposed end of the media, perhaps some kind of b-tree, then the fsck verifies it actually is what it supposed to be, that if the supposed 32G was actually a 8G and writes wrapped around somehow. checking the (empty, before commuting data) tree structure would show this up and give some clue as to the where? It seems reasonable to me, but a simple fsck fail would not give information on the actual size, would it? Just that the structure was buqqered. Thinking of replacing my Drive with a SSD. Probably happen about the time Leap 42.2 comes out. Any words of wisdom here? I'm thinking I'll do the same drill I normally do, Fresh install, then copy /home a and /data over into similar partition sizes that I have before. What to look out for? Any problem with a couple xfs/Luks partitions on the SSD? I've got a PC that used to dual boot with openSUSE and Windows. The current user of the PC decided they only wanted Windows so they blew away the openSUSE partition. Not surprisingly, it no longer boots in Windows via the menu. And openSUSE is no longer and option. It now boots up to grub-rescue. Then this series of commands works: set root=(hd0,5) set prefix=(hd0,5)/boot/grub2 insmod normal normal What command can I run inside grub-rescue to save that root and prefix? As this is a new install, there cannot be any upgrade problem. The BT adapter works if you login first as root in kde and log out again. Then BT is activated and sees the device. BUT, during this, the pairing seems to be lost. So BT will see the device but will not be able to connect. Subsequently it is possible to erase it and pair it again. However it will work only for the session. If suspended to ram or restarted, you will run into the same problem. It is curious that opensuse has so many BT problems. I have seen this in 132, Leap 42.1 had audio problems and obex failures and not TW that I expected to excel again a fail. Is this due to complicated specifications? [opensuse] Missing h.264 support in Firefox 44.0

Hi I got a problem with playing videos in firefox 44.0 under opensuse leap 42.1. I installed codecs like written on the http://opensuse-guide.org/codecs.php website, but the problem still exists. When I open youtube's html5 support site, I can see, that the codecs are correctly installed and working, excepted H.264. Firefox can play html5 videos, but other sites like vimeo or tumblr can't. All values under about:config -> mediasource.*.enabled are true. Youtube can play html5 videos, but many other sites like facebook, tumblr etc. can't. How could I let firefox play mp4 videos? I installed TW on a Wind U100 with a BT/WLAN combicard that worked well with opensuse 13.2. I had BT deactivated (hardwarewise) without noticing it. I then tried to activate it after install. Listing shows that now hardware block is off. But softwareblock is on. Now I tried to find where. I tried with bluez and to activate the device there. But no reaction. It seems powered off (not true because visible in console) I tried to change the value in bluedevilglobalrc to [Global] bluetoothBlocked=false That stays but the device remains "softblocked". Where can the glitch be?? Is there a possibility that for some reasons another programme (or systemd) governs this? I am not aware of a layer between CLI showing the device and KDE. I was trying to figure out a behavior/feature in shadowutils and whether it came from the package maintainers, or was an OpenSuse addition as wanted to know where the scripts: "useradd.local" and "groupadd.local" came from. I wanted to report one or more problems affecting both scripts and didn't know if it should be reported to the package "owners"[?] or opensuse. I installed the source rpm for "shadowutils-4.1.5" and then thought it might be as fast or faster to look at the sources from the package URL citing http://pkg-shadow.alioth.debian.org/ . On the site, I see the latest tars being 4.1.4, 4.2, and 4.2.1. I see no listing for the tarball used by OpenSUSE, neither 4.1.5.1 nor 4.1.5. I'm wondering where these packages came from (as well as wondering how 4.1.5 was "listed as being from the "alioth" source server when the source server has no such tar. It may be no big deal, but usually when I see a URL where the source tar is supposed to be from, it's usually verifiable as being there and, for the times I've checked, is usually the same tarball. In this case, taking a security-minded stance, I can't check any signature or checksum to verify that the tarball used to create opensuse binaries was from the attributed website. I'm sure there's some good explanation, but isn't this something that shouldn't happen for released software? Where *DID*, 4.1.5 (and 4.1.5.1) come from -- are they opensuse created versions? Should opensuse be creating versions of packages that are easily confused with the version numbers used on the original site? I.e. normally, I see something like 4.1.4_2.37, where the part after the "_" is some suse-specific/internal version. If the package owners didn't created the source for suse's package, who did? While I might have some belief in the security of the package on the package's source site, what is known about the 4.1.5.1 or 4.1.5 packages? [opensuse] Why is DISPLAYMANAGER_SHUTDOWN="root" ignored?

Hello, I have DISPLAYMANAGER_SHUTDOWN="root" set in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager But this setting seems to be ignored. Non-privileged users can still shutdown by choosing "shutdown" from their KDE menu. Why is this?
