[opensuse] Leap 42.2: Optimus graphics intel/nvidia; asus touchpad with Skylake...
Hell dear listers, I've been away for a while and now see that leap 42.2 has been released. On my leap 42.1 I had some problems using the optimus graphics card (an intel/nvidia mix) which I somehow could resolve using suse-prime. Also the Asus touchpad on a Skylake machine does not work as the kernel doesn't recognize it. My questions: - Does 42.2 support Optimus intel/nvidia now or is suse-prime still needed? If so, will it simply work after a zypper dup to 42.2? - Are the new touchpads now recognized and working; any experiences? - and in general: can I just change the repositories to 42.2 and then run a zypper dup? Or do I have to consider/do some special things? Would you recommend upgrading to 42.2 or would that just be versionitis? Thanks for your input! You start by trying out the latest 42.2 kernel: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/Kernel:openSUSE-42.2/kernel-default That should let you see if the touchpad works, etc. Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Touchpad definitely works with kernels >4.1.x. Since Leap 42.2 has kernel 4.4.x, touchpad works. I also have nividia/intel mix, but no experience yet. I have troubles with a ten year old Sony projector, but it is usual for me to have trouble with projectors in opensuse Albert

I upgraded 2 or 3 42.1 installations doing almost precisely that, with no trouble I can recall. Actually I've done it a lot in the past going from release to release since way back when zypper was brand new. It's a lot easier than doing a fresh installation followed by customary customizations, but little or no accumulated crud gets gets lost in the process either. By "almost" what I mean is I make the repo edits, but instead of going straight to zypper dup, I first run the following 2-line script to update the update system and lowest levels of the base system: zypper -v in zypper libzypp libsolv-tools rpm openSUSE-release zypper -v in device-mapper dmraid glibc lvm2 multipath-tools mdadm systemd udev One other deviation I make is 'zypper al kernel-de*' first, and only after 'zypper -v dup' is done 'zypper rl kernel-de*', then repeat zypper dup.
do I have to consider/do some special things?
If you're paranoid you might wish to facilitate restoration of the 42.1 kernel, initrd and /lib/modules/. Duping "obsoletes" the 42.1 kernel, leaving no previous kernel to fall back on if anything is wrong with the newly installed kernel/initrd.
Would you recommend upgrading to 42.2 or would that just be versionitis?
IIUC, 42.1 support ends already in about 6 months. If your screen(s) is/are hiDPI and you're not using Gnome or other GTK-based DE, you might be bothered by this: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1269274 -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I installed 42.2 on a Skylake based notebook with Optimus. The installer installed the nouveau driver, but checking with glxinfo i think, only intel HD graphics is running. This is OK for me most of the time, but i plan to get Optimus running somehow. Touchpad and Touchscreen are working.

Starting with: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:System_upgrade#Running_the_Upgrade my upgrade steps were: screen cp -Rv /etc/zypp/repos.d /etc/zypp/repos.d.Old sed -i 's,42\.1,42.2,g' /etc/zypp/repos.d/* zypper --gpg-auto-import-keys ref zypper dup --download-in-advance reboot

Don't really know about 42.2, but since September I run Tumbleweed on a Skylake Thinkpad with Optimus (HD530+940MX).
If so, will it simply work after a zypper dup to 42.2?
What do you call 'just works'? It will come up with the Intel graphics active (I assume that is what most people want). I installed also bumblebee and primus, and if something needs a lot GPU power I run it with primusrun. This works quite(*) smooth for me. I do not know if all that went into 42.2 (*) I use nvidia-bumblebee, which needs to recompile kernel modules for kernel upgrades - I need ro re-install this after running the new kernel, else the modules don't get compiled properly...

This is how I did all my last upgrades. Worked fine for me.
Or do I have to consider/do some special things? Would you recommend upgrading to 42.2 or would that just be versionitis?
With a Skylake I would go for the upgrade (I actually went for Tumbleweed mostly because of the Skylake Notebook with an HD530 GPU) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

An easy way to check is to visit http://software.opensuse.org and check whether bumblebee ( or whatever ) is being built for 42.2 (yet). BTW. Bumblebee and the nvidia blobs are there. -- Gertjan Lettink, a.k.a.
