There are some small icons at the top right of the screen. It is one of those. It possibly is the icon of a tool, or maybe of "xf" if you are using XFCE. Click for a menu of desktops.

No, there is nothing (in 42.2). From memory, I could choose keyboard, and halt/reboot. I had to switch to "lxdm" to be able to choose desktop. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)

I had to switch back to "lightdm" to check. But yes, it is there. The top right corner has 4 items. The left-most (on my screen) is the desktop selector. For me, it normally shows a KDE icon. If I switch the "xfce", then it shows "xf" in a black circle. The other items are the local/language, shutdown/reboot, and one other (probably for things such as a screen reader for the blind). I normally prefer "lightdm" and had no difficulty switching desktops. However, I did switch to "gdm" because some desktops don't otherwise work ("Gnome classic", for example). But now that I've switched back to "lightdm", I will probably keep it. I've finished testing Gnome, at least for now.

I'll try again. Unfortunately, installing "lxdm" removed "lightdm", some conflict. I have to reinstall it: Isengard:~ # zypper install lightdm ... Resolving package dependencies... The following 5 NEW packages are going to be installed: lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter lightdm-gtk-greeter-branding-openSUSE lightdm-gtk-greeter-lang lightdm-lang The following package is going to be REMOVED: lxdm The following 2 recommended packages were automatically selected: lightdm-gtk-greeter-lang lightdm-lang 5 new packages to install, 1 to remove. Overall download size: 368,9 KiB. Already cached: 0 B. After the operation, additional 545,5 KiB will be used. Continue? [y/n/? shows all options] (y):

My top right corner (this is a machine running 42.2) has three items, not four. There is a keyboard or language selector, and in the bar it displays a text, not an icon: en_us.utf8. Then an icon that seems a human shape. Clicking says "large font F1, high contrast F2", and it works. Finally, there is something like a power button, that says "suspend, hibernate, restart, shut down alt-f4". At the top left of the monitor I see the machine short name, does not respond to click. Center, there is a box with a drop list for names, an entry line for the password, and a "log in" button. So no, there is nothing to click to select desktops. It is back to "lxdm" for me. Well, lxdm has a somewhat nicer presentation. It has a background photo, that of the green openSUSE bulb. A big word "Login" at the center. It has a box with a droplist of names with icons (and the "more" entry"). r At the bottom left it shows a desktop chooser, and next a language chooser. At the bottom right there is the word "quit", that can reboot or shutdown. No hibernate/suspend choice. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. That's weird. The desktop selector is missing, at least as you describe it. Searching for "lightdm" in Yast, I see that I have the following installed: 5 packages that your email mentions, and: "liblightdm-gobject-1-0" (version 1.19.5-1.1) You might check whether that is installed. When I last tested "lxdm" several years ago, it did not conflict with "lightdm". However, it failed to open the gnome login keyring when using "xfce" (it did open it for "lxde"). I don't know if that is still an issue, and I'm not about to uninstall "lightdm" to find out.

I confirm that desktop selector is present in this place in 42.2. May be it is shown only if multiple sessions are installed?

Isn't IceWM part of the basic X11 pattern? I can't remember ever encountering an openSUSE installation that didn't have IceWM as an available session type. It's what startx in multi-user.target brings up after a minimal X installation, same as does login in graphical.target with only xdm installed. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Well, I have at least XFCE and LXDE functional, because I have tried them. The machine also has gnome and kde (or is it plasma?) patterns installed, but not tested (I did not intend to install them initially, but I needed to find a session starter that worked. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E.
