[opensuse] Run command as another user

Hi, I need to be able to run a command as another user. I have worked out that I can run the following from one user to execute a command as the other (bob). su - bob -c command prompt for password enter password command runs as bob but, how can I run this on one line for use in a script? Hi guys I need a little help here: Based on a scanning from the national CERT my security officer claims that I am running outdated software. Examples (scanning performed some weeks ago) Version source : X-Powered-By: PHP/5.5.14 Installed version : 5.5.14 Fixed version : 5.5.38 Source : Server: Apache/2.4.23 Installed version : 2.4.23 Fixed version : 2.4.27 As of today the installed rpm's are: me@server:~> rpm -qa | egrep "apache2-2|php5-5" apache2-mod_php5-5.5.14-77.12.1.x86_64 php5-5.5.14-77.12.1.x86_64 apache2-2.4.23-8.12.1.x86_64 I can verify that the rpms on my system is grabbed from updates and build on 21. September 2017. [opensuse] Lost graphical display after TW udate

Hi all, Please help me solve my problem, shortly described in the subject. Today I updated my Tumbleweed (with GNOME) on an ASUS K5001UX laptop. All went fine until reboot. I got an apparent command line login and a mouse cursor in the middler of the screen. The command line did not accept any input, the mouse cursor moves. I suspect this is the fault of the nouveau driver. Can I get back X without reinstalling the whole thing? Thanks Albert

[opensuse] rootmail does not work, no matter what

I tried to fix this since I updated to 42.3. Is there a bug with rootmail not working in that version? I do see there is mail in rootmail, I did set correctly to receive rootmail, but I do not receive anything. Seccheck: nothing rkhunter: nothing. Now these two run (or should run) on a daily basis and should give a report via rootmail. Any suggestion on how to receive rootmail with kmail again? I was able to delete the 4 uncopyable files, then restore them from backup. Smartctl -x reports from my few other WD disks all seem to have identical Reallocated_Sector_Ct, 200 200 140 Reallocated_Event_Count, 200 200 0 Current_Pending_Sector, 200 200 0 Offline_Uncorrectable 100 253 0 except for 200 173 0 on the bad 320 for current pending. Can anyone suggest what most likely caused the 4 files to be repeatedly uncopyable? Driver error or other error in the Dreambox software maybe? Before the 320 AV and the 2TB AV I had never ever purchased a WD disk, due to miserable experiences with used WD HDs that had come into my possession over the years. Hi, relatively recently, "lazytime" has been added as the default for mounts - from man mount: lazytime Only update times (atime, mtime, ctime) on the in-memory version of the file inode. This mount option significantly reduces writes to the inode table for workloads that perform frequent random writes to preallocated files. The on-disk timestamps are updated only when: - the inode needs to be updated for some change unrelated to file timestamps - the application employs fsync(2), syncfs(2), or sync(2) - an undeleted inode is evicted from memory - more than 24 hours have passed since the i- node was written to disk. I understand that using this option (which is the default) supersedes using "relatime". Hi, I noticed in the graph of disk activity in GKrellM that there was some constant but intermittent activity on /dev/sda. Like this: __|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| It suddenly occurred to me that with GKrellM one can display a graph per partition! So I activated graphs for each one in /dev/sda and found the culprit: /dev/sda7. What do I have there? On my system, all files that do not have an explicit MIME type are listed in Dolphin as Type "Python File (no console)". This includes files with names like: cis.txt xx.repo noExtension The mime type it shows in the Properties->General->FileTypeOptions is text/plain. So that part is okay. But when listing a name for this, "Python File (no console)" is used. After an interesting read about the inner working of xrandr I started reading the manpage. Got the version of my xrandr and got further info about my system. And then I was lost in a swell of info and possibilities. My problem with monitors is following: I am using as my main monitor a Philips 196V3L, 18,5" 13766x768. For movies and such I would like to use my television set with a bigger screen via HDMI. The TV has one HDMI plug which is connected with a box from the TV provider. If I disconnect the tv from the tv box and plug it in on my motherboard I can use HDMI as my second monitor. That is not feasible for daily use. I found myself a HDMI cable with one HDMI connector and on the other end three colored (green, blue and red) video plugs. When I plug this cable into the HDMI plug of the motherboard and the three colored video plugs int the TV set I expected to receive a signal on the TV set. The television set is only showing the input "component" with these three plugs inserted. With xrandr I read HDMI-1 and -2 disconnected. Also DP1 and 2 are not connected. [opensuse] some mp4 cannot be played "decoder profile above limits"

Hi everybody "Suddenly" the mp4-videos from my mobile phone cannot be played anymore, no matter what player I use: it only shows a black screen plus plays the sound, but no image. As for my small tests it only affects the mp4 from my samsung mobile that are larger than 10MB (9.8MB works, 11.2MB does not work, neither larger). But downloaded mp4, avi, etc. work normally even in GB size. I tried to start from commandline, and maybe the messages say something to somebody of you...: vlc 20161005_085414.mp4 VLC media player 2.2.6 Umbrella (revision 2.2.6-0-g1aae78981c) [000055aac07500c8] core libvlc: VLC wird mit dem Standard-Interface ausgeführt. I've been using the nvidia-bumblebee package from the X11:Bumblebee repository for a while now and it's still on version 375.66. Is any of the info in <https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_Bumblebee> out of date? I installed the driver from the official nvidia repository and tried to set it up with Bumblebee like that article suggested I do with Leap on Tumbleweed and I also tried to do it based on <https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee>, but I had no luck. I went back to using the nvidia-bumblebee package. Hi all, I have a Thinkpad X200 (Librebooted) that I'm faffing about with. Everything works as it ought, except I get some odd behaviour when I plug in a VGA connector. A moment after it is plugged in, the screen on the laptop goes black, except I can still see (and move) the cursor within the bounds of the laptop screen. The external monitor is also completely black. The cursor flickers a little bit. After I unplug the VGA connector, everything goes back to normal. This only happens when there is an actual monitor on the other end of the cable. Plugging in a loose cable does nothing. I haven't yet tried to connect to a different monitor. Hi all. How do I *permanently* disable pulseaudio’s module-rtp-send and module-rtp-recv from loading at login time? I’m running tumbleweed. Every time I login to KDE (5), pulseaudio starts spamming the network with multicast rtp traffic, until module-rtp-send/recv are unloaded. I cannot disable rtp sending/receiving with paprefs (PulseAudio Preferences): NONE of the check-boxes in that app respond except for “Add virtual output device for simultaneous output on all local sound cards). I have uninstalled paprefs and pactl, deleted ~/.pulse and ~/.config/pulse (whilst logged out), logged in and out, reinstalled paprefs/pactl and logged out/in again. Still no dice. My user is a member of the following groups: lp, wheel, cdrom, users (this is the primary group for all users on my system), vboxusers, video,audio,pulse- access. Some of these may not be necessary. Yes, I’ve tried logged on as a different user - the only difference is that all the checkboxes that are checked when logged in as me are unchecked when logged in as the other user, but still none can be changed! Oh, yes - KDE is using the phonon-gstreamer backend, if that is relevant at all. The module-load lines for module-rtp-send/recv are commented out in /etc/ pulse/default.pa, so they’re not being loaded from there. I cannot find any other pulse configuration files that would be forcing the settings (but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist). Any clues on how to beat this recalcitrant beast into submission gratefully received. Well, just did the install, and overall, it went rather well. I was doing a fresh install, retaining /home over top of 42.1. One gripe, on which my notes from the 42.1 install saved me another hour of headache: If you're going to set python to version 2.7.13 (fine by me), you should follow the principle of least surprise and install python-pip (along with the obvious easy_install dependency) and set etc-alternatives to use that pip (version 7.1.2). Do you found these two files in your HOME directory or in system directories? I found the two files application-x-wine-extension-vbs.xml and x-wine-extension-vbs.xml in my HOME directory. Personally I edited the file type x-wine-extension-vbs within the KDE settings tool systemsettings5 and deleted the *.vbs extension and the list of opening programs. As an alternative you can remove the two files in your HOME directory. If the files are stored in system's directories, removing them may not help, because updates with restore them. In this case you probably have to copy it to a specified location in your HOME directory and edit them. But the location is highly dependent on your system and I don't know the correct location. The error message "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below." comes from a browser or something similar. Please edit the files in a text edit. As the name *wine* says, Wine has probably created the files together with the MS Office installer. The machine is double boot Windows 10 / Leap 42.2, so I'm going to do image replication (dd_rescue), because otherwise Windows will not boot. So identical partition table. Caveats you can think of? I would appreciate an insight or help to resolve this. I can reach google.com <http://google.com> and bing.com <http://bing.com> from other browsers, namely Opera and Chromium, but my primary browser is Firefox. After reading (at times with great amusement) the thread on ReiserFS which has encompassed many subjects and made myriad valid points, I have decided that I will make no change here for a while. Actually, that is more due to my economic situation than the state of ReiserFS acceptance/rejection by future versions of whatever this distro will be called. Yes, I read all the posts and no, there has been no definitive answer to Anton's question about the future inclusion of reiserfs.ko and mkfs.reiser. There was a tonne of Facebook-ish crap slung back and forth and the exposure of the fact that ReiserFS ain't as dead as some would have like for it to be but there was also a tonne of very useful information so the thread was, IMHO, a net plus. I want to thank everyone who joined into the fray because that thread has been one of the most informative and, potentially beneficial, to me in a long time on this forum. So, with the exception of Anton's question, it seems that all the issues have been settled and this thread can finally be put to rest. Thanks, all. Today I got a malware mail with an *.7z attachment. I saved the attachment and opened the 7z archive with Ark for further investigation. The attachment contained a *.vbs Visual Basic Script file. It is mostly a downloader script which downloads malware from a Russian server. The problem: If I click on the file (instead of choosing "Preview" in context menu), Ark opens Wine with the malware VBS script. My Sophos on-access scanner blocked the attachment. My question: How I can configure KDE or Ark so, that it does not open some problematic file types, especially not with Wine? I also wonder about the insecure default settings. Hi, I have a bad nuisance problem with Thunderbird and one of my accounts at my ISP, the one I use for this list. I'm reading email, and suddenly the entire inbox becomes empty. After a while, when a new email arrives, I click on it and the inbox repopulates with the entire list. Knowing this, I send an email to myself from my phone. I have done this 64 times. When the inbox goes empty, it is also empty to tools like fetchmail. There are also milder occurrences of the problem, when the inbox "blinks" and Thunderbird looses track of where it was reading. I have contacted my ISP, and they blame Thunderbird. They said (translated (with google, then hand corrected)): +++...................... We have been reviewing the behavior of the account and after analyzing it we have reached the following conclusion: At times when there is a massive access to the account, the connections are not performing correctly, the state is inconsistent, producing errors in the indexes that in turn cause the mail to not display correctly. According to standard RFC-2177 mail clients must send the IDLE command to the server when they are ready to accept new mail. However we observe that when many connections are opened at the same time, this does not happen. We also notice that connections are opened with the account "robin.lists" and "robin.lists2" at the same time, when "robin.lists" is an alias of "robin.lists2" and therefore the content to display is the same . If possible, change the maximum number of connections to the server to 1 in the configuration of your client (Thunderbird). ......................++- I have done the suggested change in account settings / Server Settings / Advanced: "maximum number of server connections to cache" to 1 (it was 5). But the problem is still happening, several times today. It is a royal nuisance. This account is under the name "robin.listas2@...", and has an alias "robin.listas@...". All authentication must be done with the former, I have no idea why Thunderbird may use the second as they say. I have no logs from them, of course (I asked). [opensuse] Nvidia proprietary drivers on Leap 42.3

Prior to Leap 42.3 (maybe earlier), the nvidia driver RPMs for openSUSE seemed to be remade when a new kernel was released. IIRC, no compiling in the install system was needed. At least that is how I remember it. Now it seems that the driver is recompiled. On http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/leap/42.3/x86_64/ I see drivers for kernel for 4.4.76_1. On my Leap 42.3 I am running 4.4.87-25-default. While this isn't generally a problem, I am including the drivers in some KIWI install images. Compiling the nvidia stuff seems to take a very long time. Am I missing something? Or perhaps remembering incorrectly? I'm trying to set up an IPSec VPN. In the past, with other systems, I have been able to use a preshared key, to configure the VPN. However, in the network manager, I can choose Certificate/private key, but it appears to also need certificate. Is there something I'm missing with this? Generally, you'd use a certificate or private key, not both. I have been following this thread with some interest because of having been running ReiserFS since before he turned homicidal. I have had zero, count that ZERO, problems in all that time so I read with some dismay the effort to actively kill its usage in this whatever-you-call-it distro. I think that the more relevant question to ask is not "can we keep this file system around, pretty please" but "what distros are allowing its use by not actively trying to kill it"? I have used opensuse since before Mandrake went away, which has been a while and, although I don't really want to change distros, I am not married to suse (or leap, or whatever). I feel that what we have here with opensuse/leap is an example of the classic "swing" cartoon which shows the stages of project development from sales, engineering, installation and what the customer actually wanted. My need is not as complex as some and for that ReiserFS works quite well. Hi, I noticed an update to fetchmsttfonts. openSUSE-2017-1041 - Recommended update for fetchmsttfonts This update for fetchmsttfonts contains the following fixes: - fetchmsttfonts now uses sf.net automatic mirror selection (boo#1057119) - The cryptographic checksums of the downloaded fonts are now verified (boo#958651) References: 958651 (bugzilla) : add hash validation to fetchmsttfonts.sh 1057119 (bugzilla) : fetchmsttfonts seems to fail It seems it applies to the script. Anybody know of an alternative program to Komparator with very similar functionality? https://sourceforge.net/projects/komparator/ A GUI application with the ability to analyze two directories side by side, show missing files, newer files, duplicate files, compare MD5 checksums, copy from one pane to the other, and more. Note: This is not to be confused with the Kompare utility which shows the content of two text-based FILES side by side. And I'm not really after any of the myriad sync utilities unless they also perform the same *comparison* functions of Komparator. Syncing directories is not my principal concern, it's the more comprehensive side-by-side analysis that is particularly useful. It still works under my 42.2 install but hasn't been updated in years, and I fear given the desire of KDE to drop anything that hasn't been converted to Frameworks 5 it probably won't function come the Leap 15 release series. Hi, Not even sure as to how to describe the issue or where to start looking. What is happening appears to be an issue with oom or process limits, but I have no idea how to nail this down. My work habbits have not changed, meaning compared to when I was running Leap 42.2 I have a many browser tabs open as before, a lot, and as many terminal and editor windows open as well, again, a lot of those. The symptoms I am seeing are - systemd-coredump process running off and on and when it runs it sucks up 100% cpu - I get "no more process" errors when trying to open a new terminal window - Rhythembox appears to be the mos frequent victim and it gets killed or dies dmesg does not have any "trace" information, but there is a message pointing to some kind of trouble: [178155.684433] Corrupted low memory at ffff880000004000 (4000 phys) = 002777f2 Anyway, the whole thing is annoying and I'd sure like to figure out what's going on. Ah: this is now handled by systemd instead of cron, and disabled by default :( woodstock:/var/log # systemctl status logrotate ● logrotate.service - Rotate log files Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/logrotate.service; static; vendor preset: disabled) Not sure if that is a sane choice for a TW system that typically has several 'zypper dup' per week. I am the proud owner of a Thinkpad model T530 on which I boldly installed Leap 42.3. The installation naturally installed the nouveau driver for the graphics nVidia chip soldered onto the motherboard. However, I want to install a proper nVidia driver to replace the 'nooovooo' driver but I am totally perplexed about which driver I should use. I tried installing the latest 384.69 driver but somehow this did not go down well (no hassles with installing it on the Desktop...) and ended up having to re-install 42.3 from scratch. The chip on the Thinkpad has mysterious numbering on it such as GF108M, NVS 5400M and Ivybridge Mobile. I have looked up 'giggle' for info but I only got more confused. I know that there is one person on this list who is a guru re Thinkpads and I would dearly love to hear from him re my "problem" or from anyone else who may be of help to moi. I am looking all over for documentation of the possible contents of /etc/YaST2/firstboot.xml. I find many examples. But I seem not to google well enough to find a description of all the various modules that can be present. As an example of what I am trying to sort out: Older openSUSE firstboots supported the following: <module> <label>Host Name</label> <enabled config:type="boolean">true</enabled> <name>inst_hostname</name> </module> When I use this in Leap 42.3, I get an error that init_hostname has failed. I want to find out if it is still called that, and what options it supports. I have been using vncviewer for years to access remote openSUSE desktops from my local openSUSE. I now have two machines running Leap 42.3, and I cannot connect. The password is correct. For the last couple of months Kmail running under Leap 42.3 does not display most messages. Only the top header is shown. I have applied the latest updates today. The alternative is launch Evolution in Leap. Under TW, Kmail displays messages correctly. Go figure!! Regards.

Hi all, Since todays set of updates for openSUSE Leap 42.3, which seems to have included kernels and Systemd updates, my plasmashell will fail to fully load after log-in. It shows the small working area handle in the upper corner but the main control bar is missing. Running `killall plasmashell && kstart plasmashell` will result in exactly the same if done withing roughly five minutes after log-in. Once about five minutes have passed plasmashell will come up fine after a restart and then work flawlessly. The same issue happens for Firefox. If started within the first five minutes after log-in the window will come up, but it won't load any tabs and I can't interact with it. Once roughly five minutes have passed I can start it and it works as usual. Also, konsole works basically, but it will sometimes freeze. Then only killing the window will recover it. This, too, vanishes after the (about) five minute mark. Has anybody observed anything similar after todays update? I have tried booting with the previous kernel version (4.4.79-19.1), but this did not make a difference. The only red lines I found in the Systemd journal is `eventfd() failed: Too many open files`. Hi, I would like to add a second display in my Leap 42.3 VM (hypervisor is KVM on Leap 42.3). I use Virt-manager as graphical frontend. I have already found some information about that and tried to add a second "Video QXL" then use "Remote viewer". Here, in the toolbar > Display > Displays, I can see two entries (checkboxes) but the second remains uncheckable, hence no second display is available. As anyone tried successfully to do this ? Hello, my old trusted laptop from 2007 is capable of booting from a USB disk. I first build in the disk and made the first installation of Leap 42.3 (dual boot with Windows). Then I moved the HDD to a USB case and let the laptop boot to that USB connected disk. Everything looks fine. Question: if I go on with installation on the USB booted disk are there any caveats/bugs/peculiarities I have to pay attention to? Any no go's? After completion I want to move the USB booted HDD back to the laptop as main HDD . Is it possible to do that with a SSD (which is running as main disk in the laptop now) also? Thanks in advance. Is anyone running Google Earth on Leap 42.3? I have installed it from http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/rpm/stable/x86_64 When I run it, the bit that should show the earth is in a small section in a corner of the app window. Maybe it is a display driver issue? I am using nouveau. I had initial difficulties with the Nvidia driver (installed from RPMs via the Nvidia repo) and had to uninstall it. I have not tried the latest version. [opensuse] 42.3 Yast User and Group Management doesn't work.

I just tried to create a group in 42.3. When I start User and Group Management, the progress bar stops at 80%, step "Read users and groups" and stays there. This makes it impossible to manage groups & users. This is happening on 2 different computers. https://status.opensuse.org/ continues to report major outage. :-( Can someone on 42.3 who is able to make zypper behave as expected using any specific mirror rather than DOO post the content of their OSS and Non-OSS .repo files from /etc/zypp/repos.d/ please? I started an upgrade from 42.1 to 42.3 on my main system late yesterday. It got almost done, then the mirrors went haywire. NAICT, the immediate problem has its roots in the "type" line in each .repo file. I saw something about this subject recently on one of the opensuse mailing lists, but have no idea which list or what the context was, and can't remember enough info for a search to find between zero and an infinite number of hits on lists.opensuse.org. Examining the content of these files, these are the possible types: yast2 rpm-md none For some inexplicable reason, the OSS and Non-OSS repos seem to require a different type than update or optional BS or Packman repos. All other repos host a valid .repo file, but not OSS or Non-OSS. RPM reports no package owns these files, so there's no way to find out what belongs in them. When after getting timeouts trying to use DOO, I try to change to use a specific mirror, I get these messages: Retrieving repository 'NonOSS' metadata .........................................................................[error] Repository 'NonOSS' is invalid. [opensuse] Problem installing openSUSE Leap 42.3 on Acer Aspire ES 15 in dual boot with Windows

At first I tried to install openSUSE Leap 42.3 with UEFI enabled in the BIOS. I was able to boot from an USB stick and installed it on the disk. However this system when booting only used the Windows boot system, so I never saw GRUB2. The Boot page in BIOS shows a list of devices to boot from, first the USB HDD, second the disk, third Windows Boot System, but with the USB device removed only Windows Boot System is used. Choosing Boot from Disk using the USB stick gives an error message, which I searched for with Google, but I did find, discussions, however not a solution. After that I went for Legacy BIOS and now I get the GRUB2 boot screen, however without the possibility to boot Windows. Changing back to UEFI in the BIOS gives me only Windows again. Changing to Legacy in BIOS gives me GRUB2 and only Leap. It is some kind of dual boot, but not the desired one. If one needs to have / checked, does openSUSE (13.1...) support making a file called /forcefsck so it happens on reboot? We have a user with a system that is reporting an I/O error on /var/log/messages. And the system is slow. At least KDE is slow. I find plenty of advises how to configure razor-agent in /etc/spamassassin... like: sudo razor-admin -home=/etc/spamassassin/.razor -register sudo razor-admin -home=/etc/spamassassin/.razor -create sudo razor-admin -home=/etc/spamassassin/.razor -discover But this is not the configuration case in opensuse if you just run spamassasin on a userbase AFAIU. Can I use razor-agent in these conditions and were(??) to set it up. How to set it up? Just change the path from /etc/spamassassin to a pass in the respective userhome? And which spamassasin rule has to be set in kmail? And: can two users contemporaneously run it? Since updating to 42.3, I find Konqueror no longer opens to my home directory. I was finally able to get it to the point where it opens to a blank screen, but I still have to click on the home button, to show my home directory? Hello: I have openSUSE Leap 42.2 and kdm4 display manager. I would like to login to kde 4 session as root. (I have to unmount /home partition for maintaining, therefore I can't login as normal user and use su, kdesu etc, still I want to work in GUI.) If I try to login as root the login process starts but in a few moments it stops and it gives back the login window. I have set DISPLAYMANAGER_ROOT_LOGIN_LOCAL to yes in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager file, DISPLAYMANAGER_SHUTDOWN is set to all, and PERMISSION_SECURITY is set to easy local in /etc/sysconfig/security file. I was just going to do a 'zypper dup' on a Leap 42.3 system, and zypper now reports this: The following 4 NEW packages are going to be installed: nvidia-computeG04 nvidia-gfxG04-kmp-default nvidia-glG04 x11-video-nvidiaG04 I do not have any nvidia stuff installed. Also, the nvidia RPMS are for an older Leap kernel. I guess some other package is pulling this in. But no other packages look like they should do this. Except perhaps VirtualBox, which is getting updated. [opensuse] Tar file Error - Urgent data recovery

I am having problems with extracting a tar file for a colleague. It was created with tar / gzip on opensuse 42.1 and a md5 checksum generated and stored on a NAS. The 42.1 box had a disk failure (which is why I keep advising everyone to use raid but they still do not listen until it goes wrong). So 42.3 has been installed on the new disk(s) which are now in raid (which would have avoided this problem had I been listened to in the first place). So first thing, I verified the md5 sum against the tar file which came back succesful. so I am using tar -xvzf /mnt/BACKUP/file.tar.gz to extract the file. But I keep getting the following error before extraction completes: gzip: stdin: Input/output error tar: Unexpected EOF in archive tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now The odd thing is it isn't happening on one file, it happens on a different one every time (but never gets to the end). How can I recover the data in this tar file? Is there a way to ignore this error and continue anyway? [opensuse] Tape Drive Trouble

Hi, I have 4 tape drives in my server and I am lately experiencing a few problems. One night a backup failed with rmtio failed: Input output Error. I ran it again and it worked. This has happened more and more frequently and now the drive fails writing every time with this error. I put the drive (Hp storageworks Ultrium 920) in another server. It works fine. I have just received a storageworks ultrium 1760 drive today. Same problem is occuring. The easiest way to make the error come up is to try mt -f /dev/st3 erase The drive sounds like it erases the tape, then the tape is unloaded and goes back in again automatically. Then it erases it again, then does it again then again and again then eventually it gives up with the message mt: /dev/st3: rmtioctl failed: Input/output error Can anyone enlighten me, what exactly is an mt: rmtio: Input/output error and how can I diagnose where exactly this error is occuring. I have tried disconnecting all other drives on the SCSI bus and only connecting the one scsi drive. I have also tried a different scsi connector on the same cable (which is where another drive that works fine is usually connected). I thought could this be a fault with the cable or the controller? But why would the other 3 drives work fine? Then I thought but if the problem is with my two drives why do they both work in another server? I have also tried connecting one of my working drives to each SCSI connector on the cable in turn and it works fine on every one of them, so surely it is not the SCSI controller or cable? Answers to the obvious: The drive jumper pins are correct I do have a terminator on the end of the SCSI cable I have tried more than one tape I have ran several cleaning cartridges in each drive. There are no error LEDs on the drives I have already tried turning it off and on again :) Please can anyone assist with this? A while ago, I posted here about how pressing Alt-F2 # no longer worked properly for opening man pages. Now even using man:/ no longer works. When I try to open a man page, the Seamonkey browser opens to a blank page. In order to see a man page, I now have to open Konqueror or Dolphin and enter the command there. Is there a way to stop videos from playing automatically? I frequent a lot of news sites that include videos with the articles. For some idiotic reason someone has decided the videos should play automatically, which I find very annoying. Is there any way to turn this off? I then tried with Yast to enable and start the openvpn@.service provided by the package, This failed with message Failed to get properties: Unit name openvpn@.service is not valid. So I defined service unit /usr/lib/systemd/system/openvpn.service (no @) [Unit] Description=OpenVPN tunneling daemon instance using /etc/openvpn/server.conf After=network.target PartOf=openvpn.target [Service] Type=forking PrivateTmp=true PIDFile=/var/run/openvpn/server.pid ExecStart=/usr/sbin/openvpn --daemon --suppress-timestamps --writepid /var/run/openvpn/server.pid --cd /etc/openvpn/ --config server.conf ExecReload=/sbin/killproc -p /var/run/openvpn/server.pid -HUP /usr/sbin/openvpn [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target openvpn.target This service unit is the same as openvpn@.service, but explicitly specifies where the configuration files are and where the pid goes. Hi, I have an apache2 server with ssl setup with a domain name e.g. https://mysite.com Set up using <VirtualHost mysite.com:443> when I browse to https://mysite.com I can add an exception for my self signed certificate and all works well. I have also redirected http://mysite.com to https://mysite.com set up using<VirtualHost mysite.com:80> which also works However: When I browse to https://hostname or https://IP address or any other https domain name that is pointing to the same server, it shows the mysite.com virtualhost (which subsequently breaks because it is being accessed via a domain name it is not supposed to). I do not want this to happen. It should not go anywhere at all as I have not configured any other domain name to point to this virtualhost. If anything by default the sites should go to the It Works! page because in my default ssl settings I have <VirtualHost _default_:443> and default HTTP <VirtualHost *:80> and they both have the same DocumentRoot /srv/www/htdocs/default I don't understand why the sites are not going where I have told them. I must be doing something wrong here. Does anyone know how I can make all non-configure https connections point to /srv/www/htdocs/default ? Hi, I have a customer's computer who's firefox profile is riddled with pop up creating viruses and other nasty stuff. Clearing the cache and cookies etc has not resolved the problem. The customer wants to keep their (almost literally) thousands of open tabs and tab groups and also the browsing history. So the question is, is there any known good way to export all open tabs and tab groups and also the browsing history then import it all back into a clean firefox profile? Oddly, I do not know which disk this is. I am guessing that the '12' is the same as I see with lsscsi: [12:0:0:0] disk Generic Ultra HS-SD/MMC 1.82 /dev/sdg And that one is some USB disk that I am fairly certain is not connected anywhere. All known disks are accounted for. /dev/sdg is /dev/disk/by-id/usb-Generic_Ultra_HS-SD_MMC_F120C6023A1B-0:0 If I check the USB devices, a likely culprit is: Bus 003 Device 005: ID 0424:4060 Standard Microsystems Corp. Ultra Fast Media Reader So I an guessing that on the motherboard there is such a thing. But there is no connection on the outside of the box. I am not using or needing it. Is there any way to disable a device like this so that it 'goes away'? The messages in the system log appear every second or so. Over the past year some 6,000 people have fled to America's northern neighbor, and, in July alone, Canadian police stopped an estimated 3,000 people illegally attempting to walk into Quebec. "Even though our officers are patrolling 24 hours a day all year long, we've never seen such numbers coming in," he added, according to the Vermont Public Radio. But with this samba version I get the same error too , nmb service does not start. Is this a samba problem or systemd error? What I want to achieve is to start samba without a real network interface and bind to a virtualbox vboxnet0 interface when it becomes available. I don't want samba to bind to my real network interface (eth*). Any idea? [opensuse] accessing music files on HDD plugged into router (French ISP "Free")

Hi. This is a very specific case so I'm not expecting miracle responses, but before I give up totally on the idea I thought I'd see if anybody has experience with this: I have an external spinning SATA HD that until now I've plugged directly into the USB port on my PC. There are two partitions, one of which houses my music collection, mostly in FLAC. I access this through Clementine. However, I also have a second PC and the option to access those same files, again through Clementine without having to unplug the drive and stick it in the 2nd PC would be an advantage, especially for times when the first PC is not switched on. I don't want to get into other fancy media storage or outlay further cash. It's not a big deal. But my router, provided (rented, essentially) by my French ISP "Free", has 2 USB ports (and one USB/eSATA). This is the Mini 4K model, box number 1 (I don't bother plugging in box 2 since I don't pay for the TV functionality). Free's routers are perhaps a bit non-standard in their functionality, and you can't simply install some other software on them. This wikipedia page has some info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freebox When I set up the hard drive on the Freebox OS login page, the address it gives me to access the music partition is of the format: http://{my IP address}:{port number}/share/{unique string} It reads XFS, even if it says I should better use ext4, and I believe FLAC files are supported in some way or other if you want to use the Freebox's built-in media functionality, which isn't really my aim. I'd like to set Clementine to read/write to the music partition via the router, and also just access it as a regular partition on a connected device. I can't simply browse to these files in Dolphin (I'm on Leap 42.2 with KDE). I can use the Freebox OS login through my browser to access the files but you have to use its clumsy interface to upload onto it. The French documentation doesn't really cover a use-case like mine. The above wiki page suggests: 'The server's hard drive is available from the local network to Macintosh, Linux, and Windows computers. It can be made available from the WAN.' I think that's rather referring to the built-in HD on a different model. My model has no built-in HD. Could anybody with a freshly installed system (new home) or a user with freshly installed system after the creation of a new user with a virgin home confirm these bugs: (I supposte file settings to secure and umaks for the new user is 007 - this is different to the default). a) the creation wizard of kmail is broken. To see that you can do the following: create as first account an imap account (in my case with freenet.de) with it, accept the defaults that it proposes. Give the password and safe it via gpg encryption. It will accept and ... vanish. Now new account will be created. If you create the account manually by putting in the values all works fine. b) kgpg selection of new key is either crippleware or is broken. Selection of what kind of key you want to create is greyed out and dsa/el gamal ist choosen in automatic. And only with 3096. This could be caused by me having installed the nitrokey app (security repos, it is a hardware token). In this case I will have to uninstall it and see if it fixes. The bug has then to be filed against the app but it should not happen as it is in security on request of the distribution, otherwise one would download it at the producers site. Thus it really should work. But it would be nice if somebody could confirm this. I did not create a virgin user since some time so I did not notice. I have following setup: PC A: two network cards with a) mainboard network branched to a router - internet and set in opensuse as eth0 b) a bridge (created to when I run an instance of KVM to give it access c) an Ethernet card PCI-e Intel that has a static IP and should only listen on a specific private range. It is dedicated to the private internal network and is set as internal zone in the firewall. It should "talk" for learning purposes via ssh to a PC B on the home network. When I do set a) eth0 as DHCP IPv4, only no ip, automatic zone b) IPv4 DHCP dynamic IP linked to eth0 -automatic zone (or external zone). and c) eth1 ipv4 static IP, internal zone. Having recently updated both TW and 42.3, Kmail does not display incoming emails. If a message is selected, the headers in reading window are visible but the main body of the messages are not displayed. Anyone else having these issues and any suggestions on how to resolve it? On leap421, /etc/multipath.conf has syntax highlighting active in vim, on leap422 it does not. In leap421, when editing this file, I can turn it on and off with "syntax on/off", in leap422 this makes no difference. Has anyone repaired an openSUSE System that initializes the / partition as read-only (and by definition, can't be used)? I've already tried btrfs check --repair, but no success. I can mount the partition in recovery as read-write and be able to create and edit files, but still the system mounts read-only. Don't have much time in weekdays to test, that's why I'm asking for ideas to try, or a procedure if anyone has experienced the same. We want to set up a Linux and a Windows computer on a local wireless network. We would like to do this without using a dedicated access point. Having the Linux computer also be an access point would be the best solution. Is it possible for a single wireless port on Linux be both an access point and a regular wireless port at the same time? I have seen information on setting up openSUSE to be a wireless access point. Something like this: Ad-Hoc connection setup with YaST YaST -> Network devices -> Network Card select ifup, click Next select card, Edit select Static address setup and fill up the IP address, Next select Operating Mode Ad-Hoc and set ESSID to your domain id select authentication, Next, Finish Has anyone done this? On both Tumbleweed and Leap 42.3, if I set the domain name in YaST2 (Network Settings -> Hostname -> Domain Name), it seems not to be kept. If I check after saving it, it is once again empty. And the hostname command does not report it. In my case, the domain name is ramboll.ramboll-group.global.network, which I think should be accepted. It is not my choice for the domain name. It is the company domain. OK probably a dumb question with an obvious answer. I just set up an apache2 server on the latest version of tumbleweed. When I go to http://10.113.0.23 it loads fine when I go to http://hostname it will not load unless I turn off the firewall then it works fine. which ports do I need to allow? I have a strange problem when pinging a few machines on various iterations of opensuse / ubuntu. I wanted to ping a computer on my lan e.g. ping paul-pc which returned: ping: paul-pc: Name or service not known so I then ran: nslookup paul-pc which returned the correct IP of paul-pc I am also unable to ssh to the hostname but I can using the IP. any idea why? Changing the order of the values in /etc/hosts from acme acme.ramboll.ramboll-group.global.network to acme.ramboll.ramboll-group.global.network acme Did the trick. Not only did hostname now return the correct value, but YaST now shows the Domain Name. So the question is why YaST does not set this as it should be when one sets the Domain Name. Especially given that YaST itself is confused about the Domain Name because of this omission. [opensuse] iscsi and systemd ? anyone?

I am slowly considering running leap42[23] with xen, but I'm having trouble getting iscsi to work. For instance '/sbin/iscsiadm -k' seems to be hanging all the time. If I kill it, another one appears immediately. Trying to start iscsid results in "IPC qtask write failed: Broken pipe". I know this is hardly the most used technology on this list, but you never know. All, Has anyone else noticed laptop temps (or fans running remarkably more) after install of the latest kernel from the update repo? Kernel 4.4.79-18.26.2? I was browsing in FF after the update and the fans seem to run almost non-stop when scrolling pages and the temp recover (to fans quite) is taking longer than with the 4.4.79-18.23.1 kernel. It may be senility on my part, but logging nvtemp shows consistent temp excursions up to 54 degrees. I thought I would ask if anyone else has noticed something similar before I start down this rabbit-hole... -- David C. Hello, Until 13.2 when hovering over an icon (for example of an image) on the desktop a preview appeared that showed that image in a quite larger size. Since 42.1 this preview image is even smaller than the icon itself and thus isn't really helpful... How can I change the size of the preview image shown when mouse is over the icon? All, Dabbling with latex and xdvi. Unfortunately the xdvi output is white-on-white. What setting controls default rendering? Try it: $ vim myfile.tex \documentclass{article} \begin{document} This is my \emph{first} document prepared in \LaTeX. \end{document} $ latex myfile.tex $ xdvi myfile.dvi If you see something without have to Options->Fonts Darker (about 20 times), what's the trick? I can use '-bg black' and set the xdvi background black and the text shows fine, but why should it default to while-on-white? kdvi renders fine (black text on white background), so it's just xdvi that is the problem on Leap 42.2. I did a bunch of updates (drm and udev besides others). Then I did reboot the system. I suddenly get sata3 comreset failed error 32. Is there any procedure I could run? Anybody else experiencing the problem? I have smart running on the system that did not warn about any malfunction. I am not sure if I should ask these questions here or on the developers mail list, but will start here and will move this over to the other mail list if told that it would be more appropriate. (I don't want to bother the developers with beginner's questions) I am attempting to build Bacula (a backup server) from source code and in order to do so, the build configuration for Bacula requires that I give it the path to the source code files for mysql. (or in the case of openSuSE mariadb) I figured out that I could use zypper si mariadb to fetch the source code from the openSuSE repositories. (for some reason YaST is unable to fetch source code packages, which I posted and earlier query about, so I am not sure if this was the proper way to fetch and install the source code for a package, please read on before responding to this comment.) This installed a gzipped tar file for the source directories under /usr/src/packages/SOURCES and I expanded this tarball in that same location - /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/mariadb-10.0.31 I then configured the build configuration file for Bacula to use that path for the mysql source files and ran into a snag when I tried to build Bacula. When it started to compile stuff from mysql this is what happened - ... previous output from make deleted... Compiling mysql.c In file included from mysql.c:39:0: /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/mariadb-10.0.31/include/mysql.h:72:27: fatal error: mysql_version.h: No such file or directory #include "mysql_version.h" ^ compilation terminated. When I examined the include directory to see if mysql_version.h is there I found that it sort of is, there is a mysql_version.h.in It has been awhile since I have done C/C++ programming but I vaguely recall that a .h.in file is some sort of trick that a make file uses to dynamically expand these files into a proper .h file, depending upon environmental conditions. So my first question is this, am I going to have to build mariadb/mysql first in order to get the proper source files set up for my own system? (or would YaST, if it was working properly, have fetched the source files in the proper configuration for my system? I suspect not....) If I have to build mariadb as well, then this rabbit hole is starting to get really deep! I tried to read/grok the documentation I found at - https://www.suse.com/documentation/opensuse103/opensuse103_reference/data/s… and https://www.suse.com/documentation/opensuse103/opensuse103_reference/data/s… about how to build from source code, but I think the author was targeting an audience that has the same deep understanding of the build processes that he has. I admit that does not include me! Please bear with me, I am really struggling here, not having done this before, and having a lot of difficulties trying to Google and track down what all this means. Nor are the man pages enlightening me. [opensuse] Missing "middle" of ebay pages in Firefox

I'm running FF 55.0.1 64-bit under opensuse 42.2. This happens with a number of kernels. The middle, the descriptive, illustrative part of the ebay pages is missing. It happens wherever I'm logged in or not for all pages. The framing, the top, the pricing, and the scrollable alternative at the bottom are visible. That tabs for 'description' and 'shipping' are there and if I press the 'shipping" tab all the shipping info and stuff is there as I'd expect. But if I press the 'description' tab I get the box "Item Description" and the table there in but below that just BLANK SPACE where there should be further illustrations and description, all the way down, scroll, scroll scroll, until the "Questions and answers about this item". It didn't used to be like this. If I try Chromium or Qupizilla or Konqueror there isn't this blank space. In the mean time I've regressed to 52.3 but its not making a lot of difference. There is still the 'missing middle'. So I'm now back to 45.8 to and the 'middle is no longer missing. That broke a whole pile of plugins that only worked with later versions, so I'm going to work my way forward disabling those each in turn singly. I have tried many different approaches to getting my wireless device working. The error message all start with b43, and I assume the correct preface is /lib/firmware. If that is correct I cannot see what is wrong. Any ideas? Hi, I just upgraded to 42.3. It seems to boot normal, but where the graphical login should appear is only a black screen with a mouse-pointer (that I can move) - and nothing happens... If in the boot menu I choose and older Kernel (4.4.74-18.20) I can log in to KDE. That's from where I write now. Where and what can I check so that I can boot normally? Thanks for your help! In the network manager, there is an option for a "Wi-Fi (shared) connection. I assume this is the same as the hot spot connection in Windows 10, which allows sharing an Ethernet connection with other devices. After I set up the connection and try to use it, I get an authentication problem, even though I'm using the correct password. I have a user on a machine with kvm/quemu and spice. All installed. Devices are visible, spice is popping up in the windows guest system (win7) for e.g. TomTom usb device rightly connected. It asks for the root password. I give it. But then spice says (with the right(!) password given) that I do not have the permission to join the device. Puzzling is I am already as user part of kvm, quemu and spice. What do I miss or do I wrong? Any suggestion? If I do join the device as usb device in kvm it works but is not useful because update operation require often reboot and afterwards the device seem not recognizes any more by kvm. Hello: This is in openSUSE Leap 42.2 with KDM4 login manager and KDE3 desktop. First user logs in at vt7 and second user at vt8. Then first user logs out, second user stays logged in. When second user logs out and chooses turn off computer, the screen becomes blank but the computer stays on, doesn't turn off. Both vt7 and vt8 become blank, there is no login screen anymore. The computer only turns off when I switch to vt1 by pressing ctrl+alt+F1. Is this a bug? I would expect that the computer turns off when second user logs out and clicks turn off computer. on Leap 42.3: If I make a change to /etc/fstab so that, for example, I make an item be automounted by systemd, how can I get systemd to re-read this file without rebooting? Right now as I am typing this bug onto the list here, I figure, that there is multiple ipset-kmp-default packages on the machine still. Originally I had a 42.2 system, and dup-ed it to 42.3 some while ago. After a while now, I also try to clean up unused kernel-packages, as opensuse saves or keeps two distinct versions on the system installed, maybe as a fallback. Thats when I found, that I couldnt rpm -e the one kernel-default..... package today, as the rpm replied that it was still in use by some ipset-kmp-default. I didnt force it to be removed or so, so far. Right now as I am writing, I decided to see what ipset packages were on the system just as a gut feeling, and apparently there is also multiple installed, probably some leftover due to mishaps during zypper dup from 42.2 to 42.3? Hi When there is a large snapshot download, it does a long "checking file conflicts" before installing. I have an issue during that "checking" process, after a while my system starts bleeping randomly as if its in pain - does anyone know if i can do anything about it? [opensuse] Compiling firefox can be fun too

I am on opensuse 42.2 I was trying firefox nightly but the menu didn't work. So I decided to compile it, which I did, and the menu works. But to compile it I needed some clang/llvm packages from Tumbleweed, and gcc-7. So I added the repository with a lower priority than the others, then installed the packages. I thought these would all be developement packages, or things that I am not currently using, so it wouldn't matter. The first odd thing was that zypper ps -s showed some things that were using deleted files, like bash, and xdm. So now that I have compiled firefox I thought I should go and remove all the packages that came from Tumbleweed. But in Yast when I select to display packages from Tumbleweed it lists various things which are not actually installed from Tumbleweed. I can see from the zypper log the list. But I think what I want is a list of all the packages where the installed version is higher than the available version, which are shown in red in Yast. So, how do I get a list of packages in Yast which came from Tumbleweed and are a higher version than the installed so I can remove them easily? And if I remove them, will firefox stop working? If I don't remove them, is my system broken? I realise there are a number of on-line random password generators, and I do have one on my cell phone, but I'd really like that widget or an equivalent. No answers on factory, So I'll post here as well. Package built fine on buildservice 5 days ago, all I did was add: install -m 755 -d $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/usr/share/gtkwrite/img install -m 644 img/gtkwrite.png $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/usr/share/gtkwrite/img install -m 644 img/gtkwrite.ico $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/usr/share/gtkwrite/img to install the icon an image, and not I get an annoying lamb67 error: On 08/16/2017 01:30 AM, David C. [opensuse] Leap 42.3 and Grub 2 Mess

This is a multi-boot machine with several versions of openSUSE and Windows 7. Four hard drives partitioned appropriately, legacy BIOS, not UEFI. To install Leap 42.3 I did what has worked for me successfully for more than ten years - cleared space by formatting where an older version had been and installing afresh in those spaces, with Grub2 in the MBR. This time it didn't work. Or, more accurately, Grub 2 doesn't work. I can boot into any of the systems using a Super Grub 2 CDROM, so the installation(s) themselves work OK, but that external boot procedure becomes a pain in the backside. When I try to boot direct from the hard drive(s) I get the following: error: no such device: <a partition UUID number> Entering rescue mode grub rescue> The first line means what it says. Booting to any of the systems and running blkid shows that the UUID cited in the error message doesn't exist on the system. I've no idea how it got there, but it did. I can make available the results of bootinfoscript, but that might not be necessary. It appears to confirm that Grub2 is expecting to find its files at the same non-existent UUID as in the error message above. Hi, I have a script that once worked which gave me the ability to turn on or off the keyboard backlight for my ASUS laptop. (I had it working under Leap 42.1 x64) But now it is whining about a missing file, and I wonder if anyone can help me find the poor lost thing? I am running Leap42.2 x64 with a KDE/Plasma 5 desktop. The error message I get is - ./asuskbd_bklight.sh on root's password: tee: '/sys/class/leds/asus::kbd_backlight/brightness': No such file or directory That should be enough info, the script itself is not very complicated but if anyone wants to see it I can certainly provide it. (I got it off the internet somewhere awhile ago....) Anyone got any idea where '/sys/class/leds/asus::kbd_backlight/brightness' is hiding? I would prefer to see the kernel output displayed without hitting F2. I thought I had solved this problem with the following lint in /etc/defaults/grub, GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="consoleblank=600 loglevel=0 plymouth.enable=0 resume=/dev/sdc1 showopts" I thought the Plymouth.enable=0 disabled the green screen, but it appears it does not. I could find nothing other than Plymouth.enable=0 on Google or Chapter 13 of the openSuse Reference manual. In the process of investigating why my laptop recent seems to be running hotter/harder recently I looked at Wakeups under "Power Statistics"->Process. pulseaudio remains steady at 400-500 (per second?). Details are "Wakeup clock (hrtimer_wakeup)". Is this normal? Even when no audio is playing? "Interprocessor interrupt" is the only higher value at 500-600. [opensuse] emacs and xterm scroll bars

I have been frustrated with scroll bars, both on xterm and emacs. The emacs scroll bar does not re-size as a function of the buffer size (like Firefox and old emacs). Clicking on the scroll bar top and bottom move the cursor, but the text does not follow. Dragging the cursor appears to work, nearly. It goes to the top correctly, but goes way past the bottom of the buffer. The cursor position does not follow the current text position when movement are made without the cursors. These operations all use mouse-button 1 The xterm scroll bar appears to re-size correctly, but clicking at the top, bottom or dragging does not appear correct. Click on top should bring cursor to top and move text accordingly. click on bottom should bring cursor to bottom. Drag of cursor should slide cursor up and down an show text accordingly. These operations all use mouse-button 1. I also cannot discover not to color the scroll bar and thumb. I have tried setting the modes manually within emacs and they still comes up gray. One used to be able to set resources to colorize different window components. If they exist, I cannot discover the resource names in this environment. These operations all used to work, way back. One can see that Firefox remembers the good old times. After much time on Google, I found an new scroll bar package, yascroll.el. I assume since it is not a .elc file I cannot load it directly. Can anybody remind me 1)if I compile yascroll.el can I load it? 2) and how to compile it and 3) and if not, do I have to rebuild emacs to include it? Any ideas on xterm? I while ago, I started a thread about how pressing Alt-F2# etc. no longer opened a man page. Now even Alt-F2 Man:/ no longer works. Instead of the man page opening, I get a blank Seamonkey window. In addition, something like google.com now opens up Gwenview, instead of going the web site. I now have to specify www.google.com. I wish the devs would quit trying to fix something that's not broken. [opensuse] can't see Android/sshelper in dolphin

Hello, Since google decided that they should be the only one with full access to my mobiles data, it got really complicated to access the data on my android mobile phone. ESftp does not work anymore, and so I installed sshelper. This worked once, but now I have upgraded to leap 42.3 and updated my android 7.0 on a Samsung galaxy S6, and I can't see the phone in dolphin anymore... Before I could click in dolphin on "network" and one of the showed links opened a terminal on the phone to which I could copy my rsync command. Now under "network" there is nothing. When I try from the computer "ssh mobiles-ip-number" it says "access denied", the same happens when I type a rsync command, of course. On the mobile phone I can type the rsync command and it works, but that is very complicated, as I have to type all the text and numbers and pathes on the phones keyboard, making it very complicated and error prone. I cannot use copy/paste and haven't found the key that would let me repeat or change a previously typed command... So, in principle sshelper works, but I cannot use it from the computers side. It would be enough if I could ssh to the mobile in console, so I can type the commands on the desktop, but as said, I don't get a ssh connection in this direction. My university provides a script to establish a VPN connection before I can log in. It is based on Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. It has worked (and continues to work) fine with openSuSE v13.2 and v42.2. But it fails with v42.3. Please try connecting again. >> state: Disconnected None of the 3 SuSE OS's have libpangox . There are 'xft', 'ft2', 'cairo', and empty versions, but no 'x' . openvpn is installed, but I have not tried it. openconnect is also available and the description suggests it may work with Cisco. Does anyone know what the compatabilities are? BTW. I reinstalled v42.2 from my original DVD, with the same rpms (updated) as before, and then encountered the same failure. I used the export/import features of Yast, which has always been a good way to restore an installation. Going from v42.2 to v42.3 is a broken process. [opensuse] Cannot install rsyslog under Leap 42.3

According to the README file that comes in /var/log it says I should be able to install rsyslog to run alongside the fancy journal - "Syslog implementations such as syslog-ng or rsyslog may be installed side-by-side with the journal and will continue to function the way they always did." Yet when I try, using YaST2, I am getting the following ominous error message - "systemd-logger-228-29.1.x86_64 conflicts with namespace:otherproviders(syslog) provided by rsyslog-8.24.0-1.3.x86_64" My choices are to either deinstall systemd_logger-228-29.1.x86_64 (sounds like a bad idea to my uneducated eyes) or not to install rsyslog which conflicts with my intentions because that is exactly what I am trying to do, install it! So, if I blow away the systemd-logger will I also lose the ability to use the fancy journal logging ability? Or encounter some other nasty surprise later on? Thought I better ask before I do something dumb, as I was expecting rsyslog to install without a whimper... All, Just a note that the little gtkwrite editor project I've been toying with is now available for 13.1 - Leap 42.3. Latest updates include open/new spawns separate instances of editor, GIO file monitoring to protects against modification by foreign source, EOL detection and conversion LF, CRLF, CR, recent file chooser on toolbar after gtk2 bugfix (the error can be ignored until the next gtk2 update is released - it was harmless) Additional light and dark syntax highlight styles are provided, and a host of other additions that escape memory but are captured in the commit log. Currently building and running on 13.1 - Leap 42.3, Archlinux, Ubuntu, Debian (and Debian/Jessie on Raspberry Pi), Win7 and Win10. I have had some strange problems with some boots. Relevant hardware listed as: CPU: Intel Core i7-4980HQ (Quad Core, 8 threads, 6MB Cache, 2.8GHZ, with 4GHZ turbo boost) Memory: 32GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600mhz RAM (8gb x 4)Storage: 128GB sda1 1 1TB ATA WDC WD10JPVX-75J sda2 1 1TB ATA TOSHIBA MQ01ABD sda3 1 1TB MSATA Samsung SSD I boot from sda3, Win10 is on sda1, and another openSuse is currently on sda2. Anyone know if the above MCEs pose a threat? I can replace memory. but CPU is soldered in, so would have to replace motherboard to change it. [opensuse] How to get install DVD for 42.3?

I came back from a trip and wanted to transfer my photos from the camera to Google Photos, as I had done in June. I transferred them first to my Leap 42.2 desktop. I found that digikam could no longer transfer the files to Google Photos, apparently due to a change to the API. There was no other version of digikam for 42.2, so I would have to upgrade to 42.3. I downloaded the .iso file for Leap 42.3. But when I tried to burn it to a DVD, I got some error messages from k3b that direct burning was not permitted in my (v42.2) version. I tried to use the cdrecord application, but it also failed. In short, the process I have always used for downloading a .iso file and burning it to a DVD on the latest (and fully updated) openSuSE version, that is available prior to a new release, does not work. We're thinking of trying out leap422 in the office, for real. Still slightly limited given a couple of show-stoppers, but I thought I would give it a go and see how far I get. [opensuse] shutdown: "command failed"

Hi, When I shutdown my 42.3, at the end of all the shutdown messages the are about 20 to 30 lines telling "command failed", before the machine turns off. I have this since I upgraded from 42.1 to 42.3, but never have seen it before. I wonder if this is just as "cosmetic" thing I can ignore or if I should check something. Hi, Today I ran an update in Leap 42.2. This time I decided to also update the NVidia rpm packages, and all of them reported checksum errors. This happened once before but resolved after a zypper up - now it's back. [opensuse] WinTV HVR 1110 No Picture (sort of)

Hi, I have a Win TV HVR 1110 PCI Hybrid Analogue/Digital Tuner and I am having some trouble. I spent some time wondering why I could not get any picture and video. I had to install the linux-firmware-nonfree package. This has fixed it and I can now hear the audio from the stereo phono input but no picture (using VLC player). So I then put a VHS tape in the VCR (connected to S-video). It played audio but no picture. Same problem via composite. So I installed TV Time (as recommended by a quick internet search) and I can play the s-video and composite ports with a picture but it is very very grainy. This is not the case when I connect the VCR to the TV. The picture is perfect. So I then tuned into freeview using VLC only to find no picture but sound working fine. I tried and all the channels are shown under Media > Programme. All channels on all of our local muxes play audio but no picture. Just a black screen. So, why does TV time show a picture but VLC does not? Is there a setting I have to change? Why is the picture in TV Time so grainy? [opensuse] Problem with NFS mount

I have two systems which I believe are identical. One system will mount the other with no problem. The second system will NFS mount itself, but generates the following error when attempting to mount an external system: mount.nfs: res_query.c:262: __libc_res_nquery: Assertion `(hp != ((void *)0)) && (hp2 != ((void *)0))' failed. I have executed both the NFS Server and NFS Client scripts on both machines. [opensuse] new issue with 42.3 oss repo

So, as I wrote on the other thread, here is something new that came up. I am trying to install a limited version of 42.3 in a virtual machine, and there was a problem with one of the repositories. It was the OSS repository at this location: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/42.3/repo/oss/ Specifically, whenever it would get to this file, it would time out: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/42.3/repo/oss/suse/setup/des… I couldn't get it to get past this. So I followed Carlos' suggestion from my other thread, and in the repos.d file for this, I changed it to the following mirror: http://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/Linux/openSUSE/distribution/leap/42.3/repo/oss/ Then I ran zypper ref and it all updated. Hi, Just installed a new 42.3 system, and wanted to compile some of our software on it. Unfortunately I get shuttle2: # zypper se --provides 'pkgconfig(libjpeg)' No matching items found. TW would offer libjpeg62-devel and libjpeg8-devel. Why don't the leap dev packages contain a libjpeg.pc? [opensuse] update repo very slow

This morning trying to refresh my repositories, the refresh was getting hung up on updating the repo at http://download.opensuse.org/update/leap/42.2/oss/repodata/. I switched from zypper to yast, and started monitoring the update, and it turns out this file was the one that was going very slow, in the repodata subdirectory. http://download.opensuse.org/update/leap/42.2/oss/repodata/cfa171ff1eeec497… So why would that be? The file is listed at a size of 13M, and another file listed at 9.2M seemed to take only the normal time of a few seconds to download. [opensuse] openSUSE LEAP 42.3 on Lenovo S21e laptop

Updated from LEAD 42.1 to 42.3 and lost the wireless (BroadComm BC43142) Previously I got the wireless working by installing the broadcom-wl and broadcom-wl-kmp-default packages from Pacman. I did that (transferring the files via USB thumb drive). However - still no wireless. [opensuse] Problems loading opensuse on 4TB USB drive on 42.3

I purchased a 4TB Seagate Backup Plus hard drive. I have experienced problems with reliable booting on other of my USB drives, so attempted to palace an opensuse system on the new 4TB drive as an experiment. I used a 42.3 cdrom installation media. It created partition 1 without my input, BIOS boot. I realize that the MBR boot cannot exceed 2TB, so was not surprised at this. I usually have swap in partition 1, so for this drive I place swap at the end of the dis after the XFS /home partition. After the installation I booted and received: error: unknown filesystem entering rescue mpode Grub rescue I examined the partitions from my running system: Device Start End Sectors Size Type /dev/sda1 2048 16382 14335 7M BIOS boot /dev/sda2 16384 104871934 104855551 50G Microsoft basic data /dev/sda3 104871936 7792859134 7687987199 3.6T Microsoft basic data /dev/sda4 7792897920 7814000189 21102270 10.1G Microsoft basic data Why do you think this USB file system is loaded as sda. My other USB drives come up sdc, after my two installed hard drives sda and sdb. Is there something I need to write into the BIOS boot partition, and why didn't the 42.3 system installer do it? Any assistance would be appreciated. I hope these questions are not too simple. Sometimes I miss a switch in the GUI, or something equally as trivial. I branched the package and have applied the patch. https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:drankinatty/gtk2_patch_491d79d5 When I try and 'Add Comment' to document the fix and the what I did to the package, clicking on 'Add Comment' results in 404 - Page Not Found?
