Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. [opensuse] DenyHosts daemon mode on openSUSE 11.3

Hi, I am trying to run DenyHosts on OS 11.3. I can get it to sync and update the hosts.deny file, but with "rcdenyhosts status" it reports as being "unused" just after I started it with "rcdenyhosts start". I tried also with yast, setting up as a service (daemon) and starting it. It also stops immediately. In the denyhosts.log file there is no error info, just what it used to set it up at start. I've gone through the configs several times, no joy. Guys, With the iphone we were able to configure good print function via CUPS/Avahi, is there anything similar that can be done with an Android tablet? Looking, it doesn't appear that there is any basic print capability provided by Android (3.2 Honeycomb). I would like to print to by openSuSE server in the same manner I do from iOS. Anybody found a good solution? I have found PrintBot, but that isn't a solution because it cannot be used legally where confidentiality is required. (data is transferred to a 3rd party server before printing). I need to find a direct print solution. What says the braintrust? -- David C. I have found that I have tracker-miner-fs running, and often at startup it hogs the cpu for a little while. I found this thread in the forums which was interesting, basically the same problem. http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/459… The solution given at the end of the thread is, "If you have the gnome-panel-applet-tracker installed, you can disable it, just write "Tracker" in the box that you'll find when you click on the Suse button." I do have the gnome-panel-applet-tracker installed, as I found by rpm-qa | grep tracker, but how do you actually open and run this panel-applet so that you can find the Suse button and disable tracker? I also saw in my rpm qa that firefox and thundrbird use the tracker-miner. Will disabling it affect firefox and thunderbird? -- G.O. On openSUSE 12.1 with KDE 4.9 (same with 4.8 and earlier) when I start my network via NetworkManager (wired or wireless), NTP seems not quite right. I is runnuig. But it does not set the time right unless I restart it. It has been this way for a while (months). Hi all, I borrowed a Dell Inspiron Mini netbook for next week. I managed to install oS 12.1 with KDE from an USB stick. There are some problems however, the most severe is the lack of wifi. I cannot config the touchpad, apparantly the oS does not recognize it as a laptop. Did anyone out there succeded with those things? Is there any experience with that netbook and other distros? For many years I've been running successive versions of openSUSE with a /usr partition separate from the root partition /. But I see that the Fedora manuals insist that the practice of separating these two filesystems can lead to dire results. I note, too, that there was a problem with this in the early drops oS 12.2 Is there a problem here, or a potential problem, in openSUSE? [opensuse] DCF77, USB <-> parallel adapter, any solution?

I was using a DCF77 Dongle on the parallel port on my older machine and got the DCF77 time information in Europe. This worked quite fine most of the time. My new machine has no parallel port. I tried several USB <-> Parallel adapters (like the DeLock USB910) but they all failed. Some people posted on the net that these are only printer adapters. Are there any USB <-> Parallel adapters that work with dongles, non printer devices like the Conrad DCF77 ( see http://man.sourcentral.org/SUSE101/4+pcfclock , picture: http://www.linum.com/typo3temp/GB/499b753382.jpg?file=uploads%2Fpics%2Ffunk… ) Any other solutions that have DCF77 or GPS time receiving functionality even if the machine is turned off? [opensuse] multi-boot with XP, Win7, SuSE 12.1 and dealing with EFI

Up until this point, I know how to install SuSE along with older versions of Windows such as NT4 or XP. Now I am trying to setup a new HP PC with XP, Win7 and SuSE 12.1. When I get to the SuSE part, I am running into trouble with the partition setup. I started out with using gparted to create a primary partion for Win7, XP and a small boot partition for SuSE. For the remainder of the drive I created an extended partition where I have the linux swap and xfs partition for SuSE to use as / Now suddenly I am thrown into a new world that I know very little about. The SuSE install squawked about an efi problem with the boot partition I made (it said it had to be a FAT). I changed it to FAT and now I get a squawk about a GPT label. I have been trying to do some reading on this but am having trouble getting the big picture of efi and gpt and what they mean to my situation. I think that if I understood it well enough, I could probably figure out what to do myself. Is there anyone who understand this well enough to help me understand this? Why does the update state that it will NOT be installed? It implies that it will be removed. Confused. [opensuse] routing problems two network card with 2 different networks.

Hi, CenturyLink has forced me to get a fiber connect using their DSL because my 9+ yr old one is contantly crashing an has anywhere from 20-90% packect loss. So I am trying to get both to work at the same time. I have been forced to put the DSL Modem a C1000A into bridged mode. Could not get the yast2 dsl to work. So I configured pppoe to work. When I do a pppoe-start and then add the estra routes with the route command I finally get to the netstat -nr for the 168.103.176.54 right below. This allows 168.103.176.54 to go out to the internet anywhere. But incoming stops at 168.103.176.54, But 168.103.176.54 is able to ping and connect and do anything from any in the IP blocks below. Hi, My system is openSUSE 12.1 running KDE 4.9 behind a NAT router (Draytek 2800v) which incorporates its own configurable firewall. I'm also running a minidlna server linked through the router to my Blueray player. When I disable the openSUSE firewall, I can browse the directories on my computer from the TV and view/play media files. If I enable the openSUSE firewall, the server is not seen. Is it safe to rely on the router firewall alone, combined with NAT, always accepting that safety is a relative term? Conversely, has anyone successfully set up minidlna through the openSUSE firewall, and if so, what settings did you use? It seems as if it is something to do with a difference between linux and windows provided information to the router. Technical support here isn't any help, they aren't knowledgeable about linux nor their router system. I spent about two hours with them the last time I stayed in this hotel trying to figure out what was the problem. We run the cheap Cisco/Linksys routers with the DDWRT software. It's a bit better than the standard Linksys software. We turn off broadcast for wireless. The wireless connection stays active the whole time. I have tried to check google and didn't really come up with anything useful to solve this issue. When I run Win7 instead of opensuse, the connection is stable and doesn't disconnect like it does with linux. Hi there. I'm running a Xen-Server using the Tumbleweed repository. After I updated this system an hour before (zypper dup --from Tumbleweed; zypper up; reboot) virt-manager is not able to connect to libvirt anymore. [opensuse] Installation problem with keyboard

I have been trying to install Opensuse 12.1 but I can't key in anything. It seems to ignore anything I do on the keyboard. I can't move the pointer to install. I am using a HP keyboard thru a KVM 4 port. I am trying to put it on a system that works fine on 11.4. [opensuse] Case flipping in KDE3 (OpenSuSE 12.1)

After a day or two in KDE3, I am finding that case in silently and globally flipped: Caps lock is off and all alphas are upper case, all punctuation is shifted, no numbers are available only the symbols you get using the shift key, keypad doesn't work, and arrow, page up/down and delete keys, function keys, etc., don't work. Using shift or caps lock gets me only the lower case alphabet. Replugging keyboard or changing keyboard does not solve this. Whether keyboard is PS/2 or USB makes no difference. Restarting the session usually does not change this. Restarting display manager resolves it. There is nothing in the logs, no errors, complaints at all. This is new behaviour, starting within the last month. Been using 12.1 since at least May. This is interfering with remote jobs I have running. Can't just shut down and restart while the jobs are running. I had to fight just to have the bug closed as "WONTFIX" -- the developers wanted to close it as INVALID because their build works under their idealized build & test conditions. It used to be products were build to run on released products -- not just factory-only sterile conditions, but this was before openSUSE's Tivoization efforts to turn openSUSE into a platform for platform for developing end-user appliances. It's a retreat from the general linux-distro model of 1 source working anywhere (including other OS's) to an opposite and antithetical extreme of it working on virtually no end-user's real "in-use", production system (clean room build and test only!). This was most of my latest reply on that bug -- as it well details they problem(s) in the in the attitude shift that's caused the problem. The fact that most users are ok with this this (as indicated by the responder's last comment "this is how the community feels about your bug reports)" is a very strong reason why most users wouldn't be comfortable submitting feedback or bugreports. ----------------------- (In reply to comment #11) > If it is faulty please provide a patch to enhance the working version. ==== The purpose of a bug-tracking mechanism is not to force nor beat users into submission for having submitted a bug. You are creating 'use-only' machines by design (that don't easily support modification or developers). I can't create a patch for that as it's a high level decision made about products more than just samba. [opensuse] how to update iso image of opensuse releases to the latest (fixed) packages that had been released ever since gold status?

Good day, I would like to actually advocate for opensuse releasing updated iso images of their opensuse versions after gold status, similar to debian with their r1 r2 r3 rx... releases after their initial r0 of a major release. Why? I remember and experienced myself a great many of bugs that affect upgradability and give endless troubles (for example say hello to perl bootloader packages and other crazy stuff). As until so far, opensuse never releases (I think there was one incident in the past when a vanilla iso got rebuilt because of a serious showstopper bug in the gold media) updated iso files, so no matter how long I wait after a gold of a release and even if I read the often endless bugreports on really serious bugs (with e.g bootloaders, grub, raid1 systemss and many other really pretty bugs (according to my understanding of what a basic system would need to provide for in terms of usability and stability), I will always have to cope with these bugs (maybe long fixed with updates though) and read through bugreports and understand workarounds and fixes, and I often had to use rescue systems to chroot/boot into messed up nonbooting systems and fix stuff so often. So I really really would like to integrate especially these fundamental fixes into the opensuse isos. If opensuse is limited and cant to updated rX versions of their releases, please can anyone tell me how I take the packages from the /update/ repository (what files exactly? index files? simply add the update folder in some way to the iso image, or can I actually really replace the preexisting older versioned rpm inside the iso?) to the precompiled iso images of vanilla opensuse? Maybe some others think of this situation expressed here, as worthy to be tackled and maybe opensuse could also come up with a concept of patch integration into release media and doing updated enhanced revisions of major releases as well. Hi, I am having some weird effect when using ssh -x. I have a perl-script '/scripts/colorlogs' that colors log output. I have a bash script '/scripts/mess' that calls 'tail -fn48 /var/log/messages | /scripts/colorlogs'. Now, when I ssh to the machine and call /scripts/mess, everything is just fine. However, when I call 'ssh root@machine -x /scripts/mess', the script is running but the last few lines of the file are missing. Sometimes, the output stops in the middle of a line. It looks like sshd when connected by 'ssh -x' would use some buffer and would only transmit data to the client when the buffer is full. Does anybody happen to know how to avoid this? Hello: Is there a way to completely disable xorg's automatic device detection and configuration? I would like xorg to act according and ONLY according to my xorg.conf file. (That is if I remove my xorg.conf file the X servers should fail.) Is this possible in openSUSE 12.1? For example in my xorg.conf file only 2 resolutions are allowed for my monitor but krandrtray (in KDE 3.5.10) lists 24 possibilities, which is annoying. In previous opensuse/xorg only the options listed in my xorg.conf were shown by krandrtray. Hi I find it hard to accept having an instance of mysql sucking all memory from my system just to handle mail and the like. It's the worst shit database possible to choose. It would be another matter if there was a personal choice of database, as I already use PostgreSQL heavily. So, what substitutes for the following programs are acceptable - - Kmail (Well, Thunderbird) - Akgregator - Konversation - Kopete Not sure I have anything else using Akonadi. I gather that I perhaps also lose some calendar and event handling, which I don't use atm. For this the module is connecting to the message bus daemon dbus-daemon(1) to monitor all device events of the udisks-daemon(8). I use vlc to watch TV. As everybody knows, the TV stations broacast commercials (ads in America terms) which are always some % louder than the program being broadcast - ans which is damn annoying :-( . Does anyone know of an application which would keep the loudest sound level set to comfortably listen to a program to apply to commercials? Something like a "cruise-control" on a car which keeps the car running along at a preset speed? Any ideas anyone? To prevent children to access internet sites they shouldn't reach, it seems that we need a web filter. Any recommendations? Is there any public portal which could be set as proxy? My external sata drive case expired taking down my photo gallery, gallery2, until I receive a replacement case (ordered). I am trying to temporarily use a php gallery, http://sye.dk/sfpg/, which appears quick and easy but the index.php file shows nothing when accessed. [opensuse] Google maps doesn't work in Chromium?

OK, this is an odd one... Google Maps does not work for me in Chromium on openSUSE 12.1. It works fine in the latest Firefox though. By "doesn't work" I mean the Mpas page loads, but I cannot search and display any maps... it just freezes on the default map. If you click a map link it will load the map at whatever resolution/zoom the map was set to, but you cannot interact with the map in any way. Anyone else running into this problem? Could it be related to Java? Hi everyone openSUSE seems to have no way to set pam winbind settings unless you join an existing domain as a client. What if, as in Samba4, we are already the DC? We seem to have no way of setting up pam winbind without specifically joining a domain. Ubuntu has a module where you can set pam winbind whether or not you join a domain. The official Samba doco cites this for pam winbind: /etc/pam.d/common-auth Add this line before pam_unix.so: auth sufficient pam_winbind.so Also add the option use_first_pass to the pam_unix.so line /etc/pam.d/common-account Add this line before pam_unix.so: account sufficient pam_winbind.so /etc/pam.d/common-session Add these lines before any other session line: session required pam_mkhomedir.so session required pam_winbind.so However, this does not work with 12.1 nor 12.2 RC2 since then, Kerberos authentication does not work. Could anyone post their /etc/pam.d config for a working Samba4 DC with Kerberos and winbind? Better still, could we have a pam setup (yast maybe?) which does the same job as Ubuntu's pam-auth-config? Hi All, I've had a problem on my opensuse 12.1 box for a while that is finally really starting to bug me. My USB Backup drive is a western digital my media drive plugged in via USB. The problem really comes to be a pain because I use that drive to backup my webserver nightly, as well as some network documents. I would like the drive to be mounted at /media/ExtDrive1 Sometimes it shows up a /media/ExtDrive1_ (note the underscore). Sometimes when I log in via SSH and browse the directory, I can't see any files (even though they are CHMOD 755). But when I look at the mount via Dolphin, I can see all the directories in the root of the drive. At some point, I had the drive in my fstab, but had to disable that when I upgraded from 11.4 to 12.1 because it would fail to boot. Digging around, I still notice that in YaST, if I enter into Partitioner, I must have configured it through there. Digging into the edit screens, I see I have the option checked to mount as /media/ExtDrive1_ (underscore) Under Fstab Options under "mount in /etc/fstab by" I chose "Device ID" Volume label ExtDrive1. None of the other items are checked below. Data Journaling Mode is ordered, and ACL is enabled. Arbitrary Option Value is nofail. So - my main concern, how can I set this drive so that every time I use this computer, the drive is mounted the same? Having it swap between ExtDrive1_ and ExtDrive1 is a nightmare on my VPS backup script, and local CRON and shell scripts. [opensuse] 12.1 Install DVD fails to boot on a Dell Latitude

I am trying to upgrade from 11.3 to 12.1 on a machine with very limited network access, so I cannot use any of the network installation options. I downloaded and burned 12.1 Install DVD, and verified that the iso checksum and the media are correct. When I try to run the installation, I see the boot screen, choose "installation", it starts loading the kernel. The load process goes to 100%, then the screen briefly turns black, some message is printed out, but I cannot catch it, because the laptop immediately reboots itself. I tried "safe mode" and "text mode", but that does not help, either. The live ISO boots just fine; but it does not have an upgrade option. Is there a way to figure out the difference between the live ISO and the Install DVD, so that I can hopefully figure out how to boot? Thanks, Myrosia P.S. My alternative is, of course, to just install from scratch using the live ISO. I was on the wrong track... putting broadcom into the kernel (not into initrd) finally did the trick! In detail: when the pxe client stopped in linuxrc because of the network error, I fetched /proc/config.gz. This file contains the configuration for the pxe kernel. After that, I installed OpenSUSE12.1 from DVD on the computer, and compiled a kernel with make bzImage and the configuration from the client. Hello, I am running opensuse-12.1 with KDE. I accidentally pressed the left window key and (I think) the ALT key, and now I am left with an empty desktop with an empty panel/taskbar. I can see with "ps ax" that all my applications are still running, but I can't get to them. What happened? How can I get back my desktop? Hello, i have a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM57760 Gigabit Ethernet Card and it doesn't work out of box using autoyast (opensuse 12.1) over pxe. I already identified the necessary kernel modules broadcom.ko and tg3.ko. tg3 is compiled into the kernel but broadcom.ko is missing. I asked Uwe Gansert, the author of autoyast, and he told me that broadcom.ko needs to be in the initrd. But how do i get broadcom.ko into initrd? 1) unpacking initrd on the server is easy :-) mkdir /tmp/myinitrd cd /tmp/myinitrd/ zcat /srv/tftp/initrd | cpio -i 2) getting the broadcom module from the installation source on the server was no problem :-) mkdir /tmp/mykernelmods cd /tmp/mykernelmods/ rpm2cpio /srv/ftp/akt/CD1/suse/i586/kernel-default-3.1.0-1.2.1.i586.rpm | cpio -idmv cp /tmp/mykernelmods/lib/modules/3.1.0-1.2-default/kernel/drivers/net/phy/broadcom.ko /tmp/myinitrd/modules/ 3) And now i do have a problem: a) booting the client over pxe, switching to konsole and typing: modprobe tg3 #no problem modprobe broadcom #FATAL: Module broadcom not found. But the module is there, in /modules b) Okay, now i try something different. After unpacking, i did: depmod -b /tmp/myinitrd -C /tmp/myinitrd/etc/depmod.d/ 3.1.0-1.2-default This creates modules.dep, modules.alias, ... Booting over pxe now gives me the broadcom module, but not all the other modules from the kernel: modprobe tg3 #FATAL: Module tg3 not found modprobe broadcom #no problem 4) solution would be a mixture of 3a and 3b, but how? Can anyone help? [opensuse] Font size when viewing messages in Thunderbird

Most of the messages I read in Thunderbird are displayed in the font and size that I want, but some are displayed in a smaller font size. In particular, messages from Basil Chupin and Billie Walsh are displayed smaller. I am using Thunderbird 14.0 on KDE 4.9 on openSUSE 12.1. I notice that Basil is also using Thunderbird 14.0, but so is Carlos Robinson and his messages display correctly (from my POV). Is this something I can adjust at my end or is it set in the sending User-Agent? I prefer to read all messages in the same font size, as it is less tiring. I've been trying out Virtualbox under Windows, and it works very well (I have one of those stupid uninstallable xp "recovery" packages on my old laptop). I now have a nice new 64-bit desktop system with Intel vt-x and vt-d, but my installable xp package is only 32-bit, and won't allow me to install a 64-bit guest. I'd like to install xp under my 64-bit suse environment, but suse is stuck at VB 4.1.4, and VB is up to 4.1.18. The download site has 4.1.18 for OS 11.4, but I'm at 12.1. I downloaded the VB 4.1.18 bz2 package, but I can't find any instructions for installing from source, and they use something called "kmake", still without any instructions that I can find. I guess I have four questions: -will the 11.4. rpm work well with 12.1? -If not, is VB4.1.18 significantly better than 4.1.4? -if so, are there instructions an ordinary mortal can follow to get 4.1.18 into my 12.1 system? -if not, can I do anything besides just installing 32-bit OS 12.1 under my 32-bit xp system on my 64-bit computer? Is there a problem with portrait printing in openSUSE 12.1 or LibreOffice. I have a form that I have printed out many times in landscape mode. Today, I tried again, but cannot print landscape mode. I upgraded to 12.1 since the last time I printed that form. The document page layout is landscape and it makes no difference whether I set the printer to portrait or landscape. The printer is the Dell Laser Printer 1100. I have an 11.2 system with a software raid disk set. The disks are ext3. I am curious what issues I might encounter if I updated the OS to 12.1 or 12.2. Specifically: - Would the disks be compatible? Seems a silly question. But I have been in situations where lack of compatibility was unexpected. - After mounting on 12.x, could I expect the disks to work if I reverted to 11.2? The disks are data-only. The OS is elsewhere. So the question is not about reverting the OS. It is really about mounting the disks on 11.2, 12.2, and back to 11.2. Guys, This is potentially critical and I hope it is just because I am doing something wrong in tbird 14. The server is postifx, the mta is dovecot, the mailbox is imap. I was searching for some critical emails from March and April 2011. Checking my inbox, there are no messages prior to 5/31/2011. WTF? So I then looked in the "archive" folder expecting to find them - nothing. There is nothing in "archive" since 12/12/2010. There is another folder called "Archive", but it has nothing in it. Checking the Settings -> Copies & Folders under Message Archives, I have the following: [x] Keep messages archives in: o "Archives" Folder on Rankin Law Firm Archive options... When archiving messages, place them in: o Yearly archived folders [x] Keep existing folder structure of archived messages Checking the actual mail files on the server in ~/Mail, I have an "archive" showing the date of "May 18 2011 archive". However, when I look at the archive in tbird there is nothing shown from 12/12/10 on and nothing in my inbox before 5/31/11. So where is all the mail from 12/12/10-5/31/11? I cannot express the enormity and implications of a potential loss like this. Apparently the mail is still in the "archive" file, but not displayed in the "archive" folder of tbird? I am trying to get a Canon IP1600 to print in OpenSuse 12.1. There are ubuntu instructions on the web, that I am trying to adapt http://askubuntu.com/questions/41615/how-to-install-canon-pixma-ip1600 I downloaded the drivers, tracked down older libraries (gtk1), and installed the rpms. The ppd file needed minor corrections, to say resolution 600x600 instead of 600/600, but with that passed the cupstestppd. Yast print setup happily detects the printer, reads in the ppd file, and lets me choose the ip2200 driver (which according to the docs should support ip1600 as well) . But when I print a test page, nothing comes out of the printer. The cups error log is attached. It contains no errors - cups clearly thinks that all is well. I tried using the command it logs from the command line, with a ps file, but that just got a bunch of stuff printed on the console instead of going to the printer. What could be going wrong here? I would like to make debug information for libraries we make. Of course, I can compile and link the libraries this way, and install them. But I see that for openSUSE libraries, a better method is used: An RPM is made that contains the debug version of the library. This version of the library is not used when the application is run normally. This is used by gdb when running an application or examining a core file. There seems to be some intelligence to this so that gdp knows which version of the debug RPM is needed, and even suggests the command to get that version installed. These debug version of the librarys are perhaps installed in an alternate location from the regular use versions. Is there a description for how this is accomplished on openSUSE? Of most interest is how to set it up so that the debug version of the library is available to gdb. I looked around on the openSUSE site, but could not find anything. I guess I do not know where best to look... [opensuse] How to submit bug reports that actually get to a package maintainer

Dear list members, I have read http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Submitting_bug_reports on submitting bug reports. And about a year ago I submitted a bug report on a packaging bug in the ‘neverball’ package (official OSS repository), using the above guidelines: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=699124 This never got a reply, and it looks like the assignee (which was automatically selected by Bugzilla) is a person that haven’t worked on openSUSE for *many* years, and probably will never look at the bug report (since he’s now at Canonical). Since the official way of reporting bugs in packages (like this one) doesn’t work, who should I contact, or where should I submit packaging bug reports so that they get to people that actually are able to do anything about them? Worse case scenario, I nuke the drive and put another one it and go through the pain of reinstall. What I think happened, is some corrupting information got written to the first part of sda1 that is causing the partition table to see it as a separate partition. As such, it has renumbered the primary partition present sda1->sda2. Since sda1 starts on sector 29 and ends on sector 29, it looks like the answer will be along the lines of deleting sda1 and making sure sda2 ends up back as sda1. I have mounted sda2 to test and make sure the original xp partition is in tact. [opensuse] Installing multiple operating systems on same HDD

I don't want to use VirtualBox or VMWare. I have a 1TB HDD which is crammed full of empty and unused space. I want to put this space to some use by playing around with more than one systems and distros. I have created (for now) following partitions on this HDD (sda): sda1 Windows XP ntfs [INSTALLED EARLIER TODAY] sda2 Extended partition sda5 openSUSE 12.2 [INSTALLED EARLIER TODAY] sda6 swap sda7 (For oS 12.1) sda8 (For os 12.1 - just for the heck of it) Now, XP of course has its boot sitting in MBR and GRUB in openSUSE 12.2 is using Extended Partition to boot. Before I go and install oS 12.1 in sda7 I would like to know where do I tell GRUB to boot from - extended partition, just like oS 12.2, or do I use the 12.1 "/" entry for Grub's configuration? If I use the Extended Partition will it overwrite whatever is there for the 12.2 installation? I am asking because I don't want to spend hours recovering my 12.2 system if I mess the setup in Grub for 12.1. I've looked around but cannot find an unambiguous description of what to use for the 12.1 Grub except that one should not use the MBR (and not only because XP is installed). All help would be greatly appreciated, thank you. [opensuse] hardware frequency modules

I have an AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor running on an ASUS M4A78T-E motherboard. My processor fan was pretty loud, so I purchased a separate processor fan and heat sink, and plugged those in over my processor instead of the stock version. Well, it didn't work, and the processor got up to 130 deg F, and the computer shut down (that is my normal laptop temperature, but my desktop normally runs at about 110 deg). Also, the non-stock processor fan (Deep Cool is the brand name) only had a 3 pin plug for the fan, while the stock version had a 4 pin plug. So, I went back to the stock version, plugged it in, and it seems to run fine. However, now there is a problem. My cpu temperature is fine, still running between 105 and 110 deg F. My fan is still loud, but it runs ok. The problem is, now I can no longer tell what frequency my processor is running at. Before I ever swapped out the fans, my system load viewer would say what speed each of the 4 processors were running at. Now, it says they are always running at 2111.1 MHz. Also, when I boot up my desktop (box #1 below) as the services are being listed on the screen, I get this one line: Loading CPUFreq modules - hardware support not available skipped So here is where I need help. Are each of the 4 processors on my CPU really running at 3211MHz all the time, or is this just a false reading because the CPUFreq modules are not loaded? Also, is it possible that I damaged something on the motherboard or the processor when the temperature ran up to 130 deg for a couple of minutes, so that now the processor always runs at that speed? Is is possible that purchasing a new stock fan and plugging it in will solve the problem? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. -- G.O. [opensuse] Mouse over flash area causes FF to crash

Hi, When I move the mouse over an area on a web page that's a flash animation FF crashes. I have HW acceleration in the flash-settings disabled. openSUSE 12.1 x86_64 nouveau -- Gallium 0.4 on NV84 -- 2.1 Mesa 7.11 FF: 14.0.1 flash-player-11.2.202.236-24.1.x86_64 Timing of this happening is a bit unfortunate as I had to re-install my system disk and thus this is a brand new install and I cannot say whether or not there was a recent FF, flash, or nouveau update. I know that prior to my systemdisk issue I did not observe this problem. - Anyone else seeing this issue? - Any settings I can apply to nouveau, FF, or flash? I don't really want to switch to chrome, but at this point FF crashes all the time as it is almost impossible to navigate any web page without moving the mouse over some stupid embedded flash region. Using nothing but http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Gfxboot and trial and error, I've created a custom 12.1 Grub Legacy boot theme for a low vision user, except for one obstacle: no matter what I change involving transparency or color, the bottom row and the F1 text are stuck on #FFFFFF, which is too light for the lightcolored background image. All, My son came in and said "There's a problem with my computer can you come look?", so I asked him to tell me what the problem was, to which he replied "No, come look!" Suffice it to say it was a grub error complaining about no partition being found -- huh? How did that happened? Evidently, Counter-strike (Steam) froze hard in windows requiring a power-off shutdown. The box is dual-boot, so I booted Linux all is well there. I have run fdsisk, sfdisk, gpart and testdisk to try and get a picture to what is going on and how to fix it. From memory, the 250G drive should have had: sda sda1 Primary/NTFS sda2 Extended sda5 swap sda6 / ext3 sda7 /home ext4 However, it looks like something got inserted at the beginning of the disk (or something like that) that has thrown the partition number/order information off. I've never seen anything like it. My questions are: (1) does anybody recognize what happened?; and (2) what can I do to attempt to recover? (which tool would be best?) I have recently noticed when I start LibreOffice 3.5.4.7-4.8.1 on openSUSE 12.1 KDE KR49 | x86_64 is taking around 1 min 30 seconds to open up. Hello I've got a PC running OpenSUSE 12.1 (x64). After a vacations period (45 days), the user turn on the PC again, but when try to login; the system states: "Your account has expired" The user account was created without explicitly setting a account expiration date. In the network there are many PCs running Linux OpenSUSE (11.4 and 12.1). This problem has occurred in two of them, but I cannot detect a regularity as the cause of the problem. Hello: Opensuse 12.2 OSS repo originally had libreoffice 3.4. The OBS LO repo and now the 'official' update repo contains LO 3.5. Currently I have the latest official 3.5.4 update packages installed. It works. I would like to revert to LO 3.4 since I don't like version 3.5. I don't like that the page margins are not shown as before and page breaks are not shown at site but between pages. Furthermore Ctrl+Shift+Home/End combination does not select text as expected, only moves the cursor at start or end of the document. I checked whether the combination is occupied by KDE but there is not such combination on my shortcut list. My question: What is the proper way to revert to OSS 3.4 version? Previously I removed all LO 3.5 packages and reinstalled 3.4 but after that LO did not start with error message: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'com::sun::star::uno::RuntimeException' independently from which LO component was called. Is it not possible to go back to LO 3.4 from 3.5 on an up-to-date (update patches installed) 12.1 system or could there be some problem with my system? Does anyone have similar experience after moving back to LO 3.4 from 3.5? This may be off topic but I find this forum very helpful. I have some old VCR tapes I want to transfer to DVD. I have a VCR/DVD combo recorder that I can dub VCR to DVD. How can you convert the DVD to *.avi files or Windows Media Player files so I can e-mail them to my family? I googled this and found an opensource Windows .exe program "handbrake" and "handbrake" in linux but couldn't get either to run. [opensuse] how to password protect a portable harddrive for data exchange between windows and Linux?

I haven't worked with Windows in 10+ years, but now I occasionally have the need to transfer data (usually large amounts) from a customer Windows (XP or newer) machine to our local Linux machines - usually on a portable 2Tb USB-connected harddrive. This is generally done ad-hoc, so no real time or possiblity to prep the source Windows system with software etc. Is there a way to encrypt or password protect such a harddrive/ filesystem such that it is accessible from Windows and Linux both? (with very few or no changes on the Windows source system). Hello: I have openSUSE 12.1 64 bit with KDE 3.5.10. When I installed the system I chose libreoffice 3.5 from LO repo. It worked but as I did not like some change of the user interface (namely that the page margins are not visible) I decided to go back to LO 3.4. I have downgraded to LO 3.4 from oS 12.1 update repo (most packages are version 4.3.5.5-4.5.1). Now when I try to start LO it crashes: ~> oowriter terminate called after throwing an instance of 'com::sun::star::uno::RuntimeException' KCrash: Application 'soffice.bin' crashing... By googling I found that this happened to LO 3.5.x earlier. Could not find anything related to oS 12.1 and LO 3.4. I removed libreoffice-kde, no change. How could I fix this? For a while the evolution app in openSUSE 12.1 has been failing. I have used other readers while waiting for a fix. I decided that perhaps a better solution was to add GNOME:/STABLE:/3.4/ and see what that evolution does. Perhaps not one of my better solutions. Aside from evolution still not starting (for apparently different reasons), things like ConsoleKit are now failing. I get a popup message when logging in to KDE about this. So, networking and other things are now broken. I see that a common complaint is that there are undefined symbols. For example, one of the libraries that was updated is: /usr/lib/libpolkit-gobject-1.so.0 and it complains that g_mutex_lock is not defined. This file comes from libpolkit0, which was built July 2. So I would think some other person would have experienced any obvious problem. Other libs make other complaints. But the common thing is that the undefined functions all start with 'g_'. So I am guessing some GNOME library did not get updated. There were no errors when I did the update. So whatever was installed was considered consistent by zypper. Perhaps there is a missing dependency. I also have GNOME:Apps enabled. My KDE is from KDE:Release:48. Perhaps there is some dependency interaction? I do not have any Factory repos. $ lsof | grep anon_inode anon_inode $ lsof | grep dev/null /dev/null I find several anon_inodes and over a dozen /dev/null listings, in some listings for each there are several processes which are repeated. I'm expecting this to be a rootkit, but none of the rootkit scanners find anything. Why are these two listings appearing for various processes? I'm not running any virtual machines, emulation, shares, printers, servers, etc. but these listings continue to appear, it doesn't matter what Linux distro I use, these continue to show, even when disconnected from the internet. What are they? Why are they appearing? How can I stop these from running? I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 tablet. One thing I've noticed is that when I connect it to my main computer, running openSUSE 12.1, it opens as a camera and I can't seem to get to other areas of the device for saving files etc. In Windows 7, some drivers were installed and I was then able to access it for saving files. Hello: Previously I frequently used x11vnc in an openSUSE 11.2 system from another oS 11.2 system. That is I logged in from my guest system to the host via ssh, started x11vnc server on the host, and vncviewer on the guest. It always worked well. Recently I have replaced the host to openSUSE 12.1, the guest is still oS 11.2. I can login to the host via ssh and can start x11vnc on the host, even can open vnc terminal on the guest by vncviewer, but the image is continously refreshing. I get the screen image of the host display, then it becomes black, then screen image, then black etc. I use the very same commands as before. Any idea how I could fix this or find the cause? [opensuse] Problems with MTP

Hi, I have problems when connecting Android tablets using MTP. I connected to my notebook (openSUSE 12.1, KDE 4.7) several Android phones (Motorola, Samsung, HTC, original ROMs or CyanogenMod, Android 2.X). When connecting those phones, the phone ask in which mode it should be connected to the computer. I choose as an USB mass storage device and it works fine. No problem here. But when I connect Samsung tablet (Android 2.2), it asks nothing and tries connect using Samsung Kies. As I saw Samusng Kies on Windows, it is... IMHO very bad software. :-) And "of course" no Linux support. As far as I know, it uses MTP (media transfer protocol). I see it in Dolphin, I can access the storages, but I see only top-level folders and I see them as empty. I can not copy anything there or to computer. Dolphin does not complain at all, it is just loading folder contents and times out... So it does not work. There seems to by no possibility to connect is as "ordinary" USB flesh disk. Similar situation is when I connect ASUS Transformer (Android 4.0). In its settings I can choose connecting as MTP or camera (PTP). Connecting as camera seems to work. When choosing MTP, I see no new device in Dolphin, nothing. [opensuse] Connect Epson Artisan 810 network printer

A friend gave me a really nice printer, an Epson Artisan 810. It connects to my wireless router and has an IP address, and that is the way he used to use it. He had a mac. My daughter connected to it easily enough with her mac. How do I connect to it in openSUSE? It has a MAC address and an IP address, but I don't know what to do about it. I cannot tell anywhere that it is connected by TCP socket, LPD protocol, or IPP protocol. All I know is that it has a wireless IP address from my router, using the same authentication as my other wireless devices, and that my daughter's macbook connected to it easily without any messing around. If I need to post any more information, please let me know what and where to get the information. I am using box #1 below. -- G.O. [opensuse] libreoffice bug on update?

Hello, I was upgrading libre office using zypper patch from opensuse updates - upgraded from libre office 3.4.5.5 to 3.5.4.7 on August 1. Using openSUSE 12.1, kde 4.8.4, box #2 below. I had 2 open libre-office write documents at the time, one was being actively worked on. After completion of the upgrade and all packages were finished being downloaded and installed, I went to save the document I was working on using the ctrl-s keystroke with the intention of saving, then logging out of kde, and then logging back in in order to close the loop on open programs. When I hit the keystroke ctrl-s, the indicator bar indicated the document being saved, and then libreoffice suddenly closed by itself. I tried to re-open libreoffice write, hoping the auto-recovery feature would have saved my changes; however, nothing was saved and all my changes from the previous 20 minutes were lost. I am unable to duplicate the event, as I have already upgraded and do not have time to downgrade, set up the event a 2nd time, upgrade again, and test and see if the save feature would fail. I want to file a bug report, but I am confused about where to file it. Should this go on Novell, because it was an upgrade that came from the opensuse-updates repository? Or on bugs.kde.org? (I could not find a listing for libreoffice as a product to file a bug on there). Or do I need to file this in libreoffice's bug reporting system? -- G.O. Hi ALL, I've created DVD from CDs using makeSUSEdvd utility. CD version 10.3-0 for ppc64 DVD created without errors. Made install source from that dvd using xcat copycds. Source looks ok. after network boot from that source got error on the stage "Configure Software selections" Error occured while creating the catalog - "http://[adr]/sles10.3-0/ppc64/1 Source rejected by the user" Please advise how to thase what is wrong in dvd source. Existing 32 bit binaries would almost never work on a 64 bit system -- you would need to have the same libraries installed.. Does suse support taking 32bit binaries from 2004 and installing them on a 2012-suse12.1 system? If not, the justification for this is negated. What they don't mention is that existing programs are rebuilt, often from sources, and will build with the defaults for that platform. That being the case, it would require modification of those programs to work if their lib path wasn't "/usr/lib". Supporting non-recompiled binaries from 8 or more years prior, I don't think has ever been supported. The name hasn't changed, but it's meaning has narrowed and lengthened from "everything user related" to "user usable programs and data". What weight does the FHS carry?...given the many flaws in it's logic and reasoning and the fact that it's nearly a decade out of date. 8 years ago, 64-bit programs were the exception. Today, 64-bit programs are the Unix standard has libs for /usr/bin in /usr/lib, man pages were in /usr/man, though that was moved to /usr/share/man, as they are often not arch dependent. The problem comes when you intermix 1 set of programs that are non native in /usr/bin then give the non-native libraries preferential access to. As for the FHS -- what does it require about the computer as a whole -- I.e. if running in Wine, are programs in /usr/bin and /usr/lib -- I don't think so so. Then why not have 32-bit libs in /usr/lib when you run a 32-bit program and virtualize it's file access just like Windows did -- or is it that Linux is that much less advanced than Windows? As for putting things in lib64... Go for it, then when I run 64-bit bash, I'd expect it to see it's libss in /usr/lib, ditto on 1400 other x86-64 packages ... If the boot package doesn't need 32-bit libs, then what does?...I can toss those 3rd party progs that are for x386 (not even x586) -- they don't work on suse 12.1 anyway. What prevents putting the 32bit progs and libs in /usr32/{bin+lib} -- which 32-bit progs will see as /usr/{bin,lib} (using same virtualization tech as windows -- or just a linux name space), and map 64-bit progs into /usr64 and back to /usr/{bin,lib}... making room for other options like x86_I64_p32...each could be auto-virtualized to see it's own libraries and bin's where they should be... As for using libexec by default -- if you leave the defaults set to default, don't they go into libexec? Doesn't someone have to expend effort to change those things?... I mean if code was added in the past to fixate libexec->lib, if the patch were dropped wouldn't that fix things? FWIW -- suse also has prefix set incorrectly. should be "/" not /usr. eprefix is for "executable-based stuff" but setting prefix to /usr means several prefixes have to be reset: config dir in /usr/etc has to be be moved to /etc, things that would work with prefix=/ (and not have to be over-ridden: sysconfdir (=$prefix/etc) localstatedir=($prefix/var include=($prefix/include) lockdir = ($prefix/$localstatedir/lock) logdir = ($prefix/$localstatedir/log piddir = ($prefix/localstatedir/run/$pkgs Things that would break well, eprefix would no longer be equal to prefix, but with eprefix set to /usr eprefix based = bin, sbin libexec lib -- the executable things, and libexec for program executables... People put program executables in /usr/lib? hmmm..... sorta defies logic... but I'm all for as long as those 4 are under the same place, that is fine... exceptions...executables that don't need libs (statics) can go into /sbin or /bin with /lib being reserved mainly for kernel/driver functions or things in /sbin and /bin that static linkage would create prohibitively large binaries....(you probably don't want libc in every prog...) but libspecialcase? -- probably should be statically linked...if < 3-7 instances in /bin+/sbin... but that's a off-the-cuff guestimate... [opensuse] LDAP errors flood at boot time 12.1

I'm getting a host of error messages of the following kind at boot. "worker_nscd: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldap://ldap.domain.com: Can't contact LDAP server" (this line ~20 times for both worker_nscd and cfagent) Hence /var/log/messages gets flooded by these messages and our users are confused by the boot up "failures". The error itself is non-critical. As soon as dhcp client is finished, which can take a while, the connection works just fine. What could I do to remedy the situation? TIA Naturally I would go for for customizing the service files, but for nscd and cfexecd (cfagent spanwing service) I have no systemd service files defined yet.
