[opensuse] libreoffice bug on update?
Hello, I was upgrading libre office using zypper patch from opensuse updates - upgraded from libre office 3.4.5.5 to 3.5.4.7 on August 1. Using openSUSE 12.1, kde 4.8.4, box #2 below. I had 2 open libre-office write documents at the time, one was being actively worked on. After completion of the upgrade and all packages were finished being downloaded and installed, I went to save the document I was working on using the ctrl-s keystroke with the intention of saving, then logging out of kde, and then logging back in in order to close the loop on open programs. When I hit the keystroke ctrl-s, the indicator bar indicated the document being saved, and then libreoffice suddenly closed by itself. I tried to re-open libreoffice write, hoping the auto-recovery feature would have saved my changes; however, nothing was saved and all my changes from the previous 20 minutes were lost. I am unable to duplicate the event, as I have already upgraded and do not have time to downgrade, set up the event a 2nd time, upgrade again, and test and see if the save feature would fail. I want to file a bug report, but I am confused about where to file it. Should this go on Novell, because it was an upgrade that came from the opensuse-updates repository? Or on bugs.kde.org? (I could not find a listing for libreoffice as a product to file a bug on there). Or do I need to file this in libreoffice's bug reporting system? -- G.O. I guess there is nothing to file. Do not upgrade an application while it is running unless you want to take the risk of it acting funny. You can do it, it can work, but it does not have to. Ok, thanks. -- G.O. LibreOffice is a pretty large bit of software and, unlike many apps, it doesn't always load all of itself into memory when it's run. That makes updates/upgrades extremely tricky. Whatever is in memory at the time of the upgrade will work just fine but when it has to call on another part and load it from disk, there's often a conflict that causes segfaults, crashes and loss of data. This is far more likely with version upgrades, which is what happened in this case, than with patches. This is one key reason I never permit automatic updates. And one reason major kernel upgrades always require a system restart right away. It would be nice to have some kind of safe upgrade method where the package install script will defer updates if any part of it is in use. And also notify if there is a deferred upgrade to something that is running. This is probably trivial scripting. I seem to recall some work done on this in the past. Don't know what happened to it but it is very useful and it will become essential as systems evolve. jd --

Yes I agree. I realize that in the open source community we are at a disadvantage sometimes when it comes to resources compared to the kingdoms of darkness (aka Microsoft and Apple), and so some things like automatic or manual upgrades may not perform exactly as we want them to. Glad I understand it better. Thanks to all who responded. -- G.O. Yes, but that would be a bug in the package update system that did not abort or withhold the update till the program was exited. When a service is running, it is automatically restarted. So in this case at least a warning message is also appropriate, even more when updates can run automatically while people are working and data can be lost. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. For reporting bugs in openSUSE, go to bugs.opensuse.org - it will give you some information about bugreporting and then point to the Novell bugzilla, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger aj@{suse.com,opensuse.org} Twitter/Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GF: Jeff Hawn,Jennifer Guild,Felix Imendörffer,HRB16746 (AG Nürnberg) GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
