Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? [opensuse] No sound in Minecraft

I've asked on the minecraft forums without a response so I'm trying here in case that it might be a SuSE configuration issue. I do not have sound in the game. This has been a problem for several versions nowCurently running 1.7.5. I've also tried the last 2 snapshots. I can play music fine and was able to play the sound files in .mineraft/assets/objects/* via Amarok. I have deleted the assets folder and had re-downloaded everything. I looked in the bug list and I found a few sound related issues, but they suggested that there was some sounds. The log only mentions minecraft:mob.witch.idle, but there are no sounds at all in game, but in options everything is set to 100%. I tried to force an older version in profile editor but still no sound going back to 1.4.2. I see a java Playback Stream in the mixer and volume is 100% there too. Any ideas? [opensuse] DenyHosts daemon mode on openSUSE 11.3

Hi, I am trying to run DenyHosts on OS 11.3. I can get it to sync and update the hosts.deny file, but with "rcdenyhosts status" it reports as being "unused" just after I started it with "rcdenyhosts start". I tried also with yast, setting up as a service (daemon) and starting it. It also stops immediately. In the denyhosts.log file there is no error info, just what it used to set it up at start. I've gone through the configs several times, no joy. [opensuse] 13.1 bootable USB stick

Hello, I am trying to create a bootable USB thumb drive. I downloaded the liveKDE64bit iso and followed the procedure outlined in the SDB. I did: Created 2 primary partitions on the drive, sdb1 - 10 Gb and sdb2 - 4 Gb, both ext4. as root ran dd if=/mnt/iso/openSUSE-13.1-KDE-Live-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdb1 bs=4M The drive boots into a grub prompt only, but no menu appears. I reformatted sdb1 and tried again using virtually the sme command except using bs=1M and the process was finished ran "sync". This was suggested on another web page for suse 13.1. The result is the same, just a grub boot prompt. I could, at the prompt, set the root device, the kernel and the initrd and boot, but it is cumbersome to do it every time. Any pointers on how to get the normal boot menu (that is on the dvd) would be much appreciated. [opensuse] Why is dovecot using user home directory?

All this past week, I have been trying to get dovecot to work properly. For some reason, it now wants to use the users home directory, instead of ~/mail. Dovecot.conf has the line mail_location = mbox:/mail. I have also tried with mail_location = mbox:/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u:LAYOUT=fs. Despite this, the home directory continues to be used, with all the files and directories (including hidden) appearing in the email client. Why is this happening now? I have set up dovecot several times in the past and never had this happen. Is this someone's idea of a "feature"? [opensuse] running a program before shutdown

Hi everyone! I do have a small problem: I want to run unison before i log out of kde, so that my files are synchronized automatically. I created a .desktop file and placed it in /.kde4/shutdown/. The .desktop file is specified by the command: unison myprofile -batch I tried it, but it seems, that this doesn´t work, because nothing was synchronized after login in again. Although in the systemsettings in the category autostart, my .desktop is listed and set to logout. Any suggestions. Best Benjamin! ps.: I already tried it with a shell-scrpit, which i also placed in the shutdown folder, but this also didn´t work…

[opensuse] Screen display corruption/touchpad weirdness after recent bunch of updates (nVidia binary driver)

I was off for two weeks and after return got a bunch of updates, including GNOME, Firefox and new nVidia driver. Now I get rather nasty problems in at least two areas (after reboot) - screen updates sometimes look like rapid blinking of part of window; and do not really redraw screen until I try to scroll window. I get it e.g. on forums.opensuse.org site, or in Firefox status bar (which is shown in the bottom when page is loading) or in Firefox tab titles. - in Claws mail scrolling with touchpad sometimes gets "stuck" - it continues to scroll even when I raise finger. Moreover, sometimes it scrolls *both* message list and message body. It almost looks like events get dispatched incorrectly. [opensuse] XFS filesystem total failure on return from hibernation.

XFS fails completely, lots of kernel messages. System has to be restarted, recovery is impossible otherwise. It seems to affect one partition only (?), the one that has my home, on xfs. I booted the 13.1 XFCE rescue image, tried to xfs-repair that one. It complained that there was a log, that I should attempt to mount it first. Mount hung. It is unkillable. Reboot of system hung. smartctl -a gives no hint of problem. The hard disk is new (190 hours). I run "xfs_repair -L" on that disk, which succeeds with no error report. I'm at the moment running the long SMART test on that disk. It will take 226 minutes. [opensuse] outgoing tcp connections are limited to 200 kb/s, how to fix?

Dear all, since a reboot about two weeks ago, on a server I use, all outgoing tcp connections are limited to about 200 kb/s. Incoming tcp and udp both ways is fine (1 GB/s) and also when using multiple connections simultaneously higher bandwidths can be reached. The server is running 12.3. The problem appears with apache, but also when testing with iperf. There is only one switch in between my machine and the server and switching the port with other machines doesn't help. Things I already tried: - disabling susefirewall, completely empty iptables - check tc (shows no entries) - playing around with tcp buffers, like discussed at https://fasterdata.es.net/host-tuning/linux/ - reboot :) Do you have any suggestions what could be the problem? [opensuse] md5sum database

Hi ListMates, Some time ago (10-15 years ago?) there used to be a Linux application that made a complete database of an installed system (basically it stored all the "system" files with their original file sizes, ownership, access permissions and md5sums plus other info in the db) and had programs to periodically check this database against an installed system and report on any changes and optionally to restore them to their original states. I forgot the name of the package and can't seem to find it via google! Does anyone on this list remember this package and if so to let me know where to find it. Thanks for any help. Best regards. [opensuse] chmsee doesn't work

Hello, I'm trying to read a .chm file (specifically, javascript.chm). The original chmsee that was on the system failed, so I used yast2 to delete it and reinstall from the opensuse repository. It fails in exactly the same way. [opensuse] SeaMonkey: "Restore Previous Session" greyed out after crash

This is on openSUSE-13.1, SeaMonkey-2.26.1. SeaMonkey crashed with lots of windows/tabs open, and there are both sessionstore.json and sessionstore.bak files in the assoc profile data. However, when the browser is restarted and the "Restore Session" window comes up, the "Restore Previous Session" option is greyed out and list of Windows and Tabs is empty. The only usable button is "Start New Session". I had quite a bit of stored up state and was preparing to save and/or bookmark most of the saved up pages, most being tech references to things I've been researching recently. I tried renaming the sessionstore.bak file as sessionstore.json, but that gave the same result. I have no other useable sessionstore.json files for that session. As a sanity check, I did try using the sessionstore.json file from another PC and that session started up OK, so I know the problem is not due to a setting in the affected SeaMonkey instance. To help view the JSON, I used json_pp on the sessionstore.json files, and there is a very large blob in the middle of the file that starts with, "formdata":{"#sessionData":"{ which the json_pp does not pretty print, and everything in that blob appears to have extra quoting (lots of backslashes, etc.). Braces, brackets, quotes, etc., are all balanced in the file, i.e., I am not able to identify any corruption in the file. If I run seamonkey from the command line, I get no helpful error messages. Is there a way to force error msgs or debugging info to help debug this? How about how to extract the info directly from the JSON file? Any other ideas? [I'm tearing my hair out trying to fix this!] Any other forums to post to? (I'm not active on any Mozilla related forums presently, and I'm a mostly email list user vs web forum user). Web searches have not brought up much more than how to configure Session Restore, etc. I will post any progress I am able to make on this. If one had installed other packages by other means then no way to test. The application I'm trying to remember took a "snapshot" of all the files (ie: in /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, /etc/...etc) with all the details as per my above info and created a db with all this info. Then you ran a program that verified your current system against the "master" db and highlighted any changes and optionally to restore files to their original condition. There is a program (md5deep) that does some of what I want but is basically a manual process - I was hoping to find the original application and use it instead to save me a bunch of time writing scripts. [opensuse] City of Munich

The City of Munich is currently collecting data to plan their next upgrade strategy. As many of you may know they are still on an old Ubuntu LTS customized build with KDE 3.5. If anyone is located near Munich now would be a great time to attempt to schedule a presentation give to the city council on the benefits of migrating to openSUSE 13.1 with KDE 4 for their next desktop rollout! Munich has been known to both fund development in LibreOffice as well as locally develop as well! OBS would be great to showcase to them and this could possibly get us some new packagers/maintainers. The OBS LibreOffice repo hosting The Fresh release build would also be great for Munich from recent reports that they are migrating to LO from AOO and funding LO development work. Munich runs multiple different heavily tweaked desktop builds as such Kiwi Imaging and Automated Installation would also be great to include as well. Data at rest security would be another great topic as YaST as well as The OpenSUSE installation medium make it very easy to encrypt partitions with LUKS and Ubuntu's graphical tools are still limited. Currently The City Council is working with The City Library to distribute older Ubuntu CD's. It would be great to schedule an openSUSE event with The Library and get The Ambassadors out in full force for a weekend openSUSE/SUSE Linux Expo. Getting some openSUSE books into circulation in The Library as well would be great. openSUSE will also work with Novell ZenWorks which they could leverage to have enterprise management features, but Munich does make it known they want community FLOSS solutions. This would be a great opportunity to get some great press for SUSE/openSUSE! SuSE was always a favorite and well utilized GNU/Linux distro in Germany and EU and this name recognition and the fact that openSUSE boxed versions are available may also help with the political issues taking place as well. It could be good to cover openSUSE Edu spin as well and showcase how it can be utilized in The City of Munich Schools or even at The City of Munich Public Library for students to access. [opensuse] mingetty - security breach?

Hi ListMates, I'm not sure what's going on and I was hoping that someone could shed some light on this issue. I recently did a (netstat -tupan) to see what ports are open on my system and I got a curious line: tcp 0 0 192.168.0.5:44379 95.211.60.8:8070 ESTABLISHED 4521/mingetty tty4 and when I do a (ps -ef | grep 4521) I get: root 4521 1 0 10:44 ? 00:00:02 /sbin/mingetty tty4 To be on the safe side I killed process 4521 (kill -9 4521) and that got rid of the process. My question though is "where is this mingetty coming from?". I checked the system high and low and can't find /sbin/mingetty nor can I find mingetty anywhere on the system!!?? And I can't find which process at boot time started it up - can anyone shed some light on this issue?? It seems this process gets started EVERY time the system gets booted - and it seems to be a part of OpenSuse 13.1. I tried this on a fresh install (in vmware) and indeed the process gets started by OpenSuse. I also did a check on ip: 95.211.60.8 and it seems to come from LeaseWeb, P.O. Box 93054, 1090BB AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, www.leaseweb.com. Does anyone else see this on their systems? Is it something I need be worried about? Thanks and best regards. Otto. [opensuse] "ports" repositories

Hello, to install gps software (viking and qlandkarte), I need the "ports" reposotories in obs. (1clikinstall) but these repos give an error when trying to install. I could compile viking myself, but can't do the same each time. have an idea of the problem? yast says: An error occurred while attempting to subscribe to the required repositories. [opensuse] Usb Wireless Stick – Connection problem

Hi everyone! I have a problem with my new usb wireless stick which is a edimax … . The stick is recognized by the system and the kernel modules (rtl8192cu, rtlwifi, rtl_usb, rtl8192cu_common) are loaded. I tried the stick at two different places. In the first place it worked out of the box without any problem and at home i don´t manage to get it workin. Hi, time to answer finally. So as you probably know I'm the "founder" of Evergreen just in case. I discussed this years ago as well but people like to discuss with no action being taken. That's why I just turned it around and started Evergreen for 11.1 to see what can be done. After 11.1, 11.2 and 11.4 I can tell you the following: - no, it's not that much effort to continue maintenance up to 3 years and probably a bit more - it'll get hard starting from 3 years if you cannot do for example service packs to upgrade parts which cannot be maintained anymore - service packs are a big beast. Not sure if the community can or want to help enough to get that tested and shipped. - you need more people but they didn't show up during all the time - we had some contributors for certain packages (don't know the number but something in the range from 5-10) but almost all monitoring and responsibility for everything which was not taken by someone else was on two people (thanks Stefan) - this was also the reason we had to end 11.4 maintenance after the announced lifetime. It was getting to exhausting as a spare time project I'm totally proud what we achieved because it showed that it's not too much effort but if you get too few people to help you are screwed. That is also why the Evergreen plans for now are not going to change unless I see changes in "resources". That might be more contributors or also other incentives to increase the motivation of the volunteer ;-) If we have a better understanding what resources are available we can talk about what to change in the Evergreen/LTS structure. Discussing it, and this is what I've learned, doesn't bring us anywhere. There are a lot of people demanding it but practically almost noone want to invest anything. I'll enjoy to have a rest until Evergreen for 13.1 is starting again and being able to do a few other things instead. (As I haven’t noticed any related updates till yesterday I updated them with Yast, but as I read there is another problem yet to be solved and I'd like to know if I can simply forget it and leave it to the updater...) [opensuse] Zypper forgets trusted keys

Hello altogether! For some time, I noticed on several opensuse installs that I have to confirm the signatures of software repositories when launching Yast/Software or Zypper. Indeed, the auto-update via Apper often fails due to this problem. I always choose "trust always" (in german "(i)mmer vertrauen") in hope that zypper doesn't lock again due to unknown signatures. But soon these keys are forgotten again and I have to "retrust" the same keys. I have some OBS projects includes, so do these keys change in OBS when a developer commits new software? [opensuse] Running old version

I have a quick question for folks who run old versions of oS. I know that there are a lot of folks (myself included) who are running older versions of oS, because they don't really have a reason to upgrade - everything is working properly and has been configured over the course of many months to run smoothly and exactly the way we want/need it to. My question is - how do other folks handle security vulnerabilities like this current bash vulnerability? Since oS isn't releasing patches for 11.4, 12.2, etc. anymore, how do you get around that? Did a prelink -a of my binaries today -- only thing I can think that might have changed things(?) Hello :-) I have a problem I can't solve myself... I want to print a file, available as svg (inkscape) or (inkscape generated) pdf. this file is 28x75 *cm* (a family tree) I want to print it on landscape mode, on several consecutive paper pages. I can't make any of my software understand this. Most only print the center part of the file, kpdf prints all the file, but shrinked to fit the A4 page (portrait). Only when I comment them out does it work. All, Is anyone interested in attempting to change openSUSE's release maintenance periods and increase the Evergreen release support timeframe to make it easier for Small Medium Businesses SMB to implement? Every SMB we can migrate over to evergreen becomes a potential future SUSE Enterprise and their input into the distro will certainly help steer it into better supporting their businesses. Currently openSUSE Evergreen releases can range from 3-4 years of support but 3 is essentially guaranteed. Starting with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, both The Server and Desktop versions will receive 5 years support. We are currently slightly shorter by around two years for Evergreen LTS releases, as the next Evergreen release is also free of cost and openSUSE upgrades do work rather well. I do not really see needing to provide a hard 5 year guarantee. I would like to see openSUSE start using the Major.0 release again and possibly move to this type of release cycle. 14.0 Evergreen Release 14.1 Developer/Tester/Enthusiast Release targeted to development of the next Evergreen 14.2 Developer/Tester/Enthusiast Release targeted to development of the next Evergreen 14.3 Developer/Tester/Enthusiast Release targeted to development of the next Evergreen 15.0 Evergreen Release 15.1 Developer/Tester/Enthusiast Release targeted to development of the next Evergreen 15.2 = 14.0 Evergreen EOL This would put Evergreen under maintenance support for a period of 6 releases and provide a 2 release stabilization period before users would have to migrate approximately 18 Months. Most businesses that utilize Windows wait until Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 to migrate to enhance stability and fix design flaws so this would help put us on par with Microsoft some. There was once take about creating a service pack system for SUSE when Novell owned SUSE. I don't know what happened with it but we could look at releasing a updated DVD installer (15.0.1) with in conjunction with the 15.2 releases this would just be a software defect fix incorporating the first 12 months of updates from the maintenance period. To assist users in migrating between evergreen versions and provide extra emphasis on openSUSE's maintenance support. If a new DVD installer is not desirable then possibly a just a add-on installation CD or DVD that contains all the openSUSE patches that were released in the first year so it can be downloaded added as an additional installation source and used to quickly apply all the relevant updates. I personally like the idea of releasing a Evergreen updated Installation medium on a 12 month cycle and using a third point number so this could be treated as an equal to a service pack slipped streamed installation medium to speed up installation times. For the minor update releases they are currently supported for around 18 months (2 releases + 2 months). I would rather see these change to (1 release + 6 months). Most users do not keep minor releases for 18 months. Keeping them maintained for 18 months does use up resources even with OBS. I think we should treat the 3 minor update release's as the proving ground developer/tester/enthusiast targeted releases to work up to the new Evergreen release. In conjunction with this we could put together a long term goal section on the Wiki for the next Evergreen release instead of only using the goals per release cycle. Alright, after a decade or more of routinely carrying a laptop around I just broke my first screen. It's for a Dell XPS L502X. Looks like I can spend anywhere from $60 to $300 to replace it. (At $300 it may be smarter to replace it?) It looks like the 2 basic options are buying a complete lid with the screen and bezel already toghether, or I can buy just a screen. I'm reasonably handy with tools, so I'm wondering what the smart thing is for me to do. Any advice? I've tried installing Oracle Java from both rpm and tar, but for some reason, it does not appear to install properly. To enable Java in a browser, I'm supposed to create a symlink from either libjavaplugin_oji or libjavaplugin_oji.so to the .mozilla/plugin directory. However, after installing by either method, those files do not appear anywhere on my system. Even the directory those files are supposed to be in don't appear. A year or so ago I started a discussion about a problem I had with the disk cache getting full, and then there being long delays when it was emptied. The solution at that time (openSUSE 12.1) was to periodically run: echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches At the time, this solved everything. For some reason I cannot understand, I think this problem has returned. The cache seems to be filling up - but the command above does not help. I looked through the archives but could not find the message from the person who suggested an X app that monitored the various cache. I found this tool very useful at the time. But I have since forgotten it. I usually record this kind of information, but not that time. All, I was hit by a mediawiki exploit that past week that affected versions at least up to and including 122.2. I am still working to determine the exact exploit used or whether this may be a new one. From what I can gather, either by cross-site-scripting (XSS) or cross-site request forgery (CSRF) an exploit existed that allowed an attacker to bypass the normal page/user creation protections, captcha and response e-mail to generate an account and gain privileges to use wiki mail for outbound spam. The postfix smtp sender/client restrictions were defeated by sending outbound as a valid system user using the UID of the web-user (e.g. http, www, etc.). This attack is automated and will generate thousands of users/pages and outbound mails in a relatively short amount of time. Since the inbound connection is via http (instead of say a login attempt via ssh), the normal anvil/fail2ban restrictions are not implicated. After reviewing the listed CVE's at: http://www.cvedetails.com/product/4125/Mediawiki-Mediawiki.html?vendor_id=2… I'm not sure this exploit is among those listed. Mediawiki seems to be the only web-application affected by this exploit. So, if you run mediawiki, update to the latest 1.23.3 and check your logs often. If you are hit and need to get rid of 10,000 additions to your server, drop a reply. Direct deletion/truncation from the mysql tables themselves are easiest way to recover. -- David C. Hi, I am wanting some software to view metadata in avi files. I have found showriff, but there does not seem to be much else. I noted that the XAWTV project contains a showriff.c file, but I cannot find any "nice" software to browse and view the data chunks in an avi file. (I know the 'standards' for RIFF data are not fantastic. I will deal with the data chunk / BLOB as a separate issue!!!) [opensuse] Still Resolution problems

I have gone back to 12.3. I installed 13.1 and it made the resolution 1600 x something. But the cursor was invisible so I couldn't change the resolution in KDE settings. 12.3 only give me 720x360 but I am coping. I can't get to the grub menu because I have to use the installation cd to boot the hard disk, so I can't enter nomodeset. I can't get to yast. I will ask about that in a separate email. The devel:tools:scm/etckeeper seems same as utilities/etckeeper. And etckeeper-zypp-plugin s are same too. [opensuse] Something changed some KDE items which were previously displayed

A couple of weeks ago I did the normal 'zypper refresh/patch/up' which completed without (any apparent) problems. However, something was installed or something was replaced which changed the way KDE 4.14.0.x works (or rather now does not work). The first thing which I noticed was that I can no longer right-click on the desktop, select LEAVE>RESTART or SHUT DOWN and have this choice performed. Selecting LEAVE starts to dim the desktop but does not bring up the menu where one can select SHUT DOWN etc - all I end up with is a slightly dimmed screen. There is no way to either RESTART or SHUT DOWN the computer using this method. Clicking on the screen brings it back to its 'original' brightness. A similar thing occurs when one clicks on KICKOFF and selects LEAVE - one cannot Shut Down or Restart. At the moment, the ONLY way (apart from pressing the OFF switch on the computer box) is to open TERMINAL, "login" as root and enter 'HALT -P'. Earlier today I had to go out and, without thinking, did LOCK SCREEN. I could not 'unlock' the screen in the normal way; the mouse was active but that was all. The only way I regained control over the system was to hit the BIG RED BUTTON :-( . One other thing re all this. I have lost the SYSTEM SETTINGS icon/widget/whatever in KICKOFF. It's kapoot, poof, gone.....nowhere to be seen. To get back to "normality" I tried deleting the '~/.kde4' sub-directory but while this regenerates a new ./kde4 all of the above hassles remain :-( . Does anyone know, please, what has to be done to get back to what should be regarded as the "normal" KDE 4.14.0.x situation? I came across an entry in "my little black book" which stated that executing '/opt/kde3/bin/kbuildsycoca' rebuilt the KDE menus. Now, in oS 13.1 I can see that this item exists - even though I am NOT running KDE 3 but have KDE 4. I don't want to totally corrupt my 13.1 installation so I am asking if running 'opt/kde3/bin/kbuidsycoca' would recreate the menus or would it cause a flash of light followed by a puff of smoke from the keyboard? (BTW, while '/opt/kde3/ ' *is* still to be seen in oS 13.1 it is not in 13.2/Factory .) If running 'opt/kde3/bin/kbuildsycoca' no longer recreates KDE menus what then does recreate them? Hi Does anyone know why i always get "curl" errors using "zypper" or Yast to refresh/ update the repos? Its random as to which repos fails. see example below I don't ever recall this happening prior to opensuse 12. Hi, we've disabled ipv6 on all servers, we hadn't IPv6 IP from providers. In this case the server is a firewall between LAN, DMZ and WAN. I enabled IPv6 on anothers server too, but only on this " important" server I've problem to enable IPv6. Why ? I've 6to4 tunneling at home on opensuse 12.2, at work is native IPv6 on another opensuse 12.2 with dns service, no problem at all... I have used Google Voice in the Chromium browser in the past. However, it has now stopped working. When I try to make a call, the dialer says to download the voice plugin. I have done that, but it still doesn't work. My firewall computer, running openSUSE 13.1 no longer uses external DNS look up, but does use the hosts file. Wireshark shows it's not even attempting to access the DNS servers. I have tried recreating resolv.conf, but the problem remains. Any idea why it wouldn't access DNS servers? Hello: I want to record flash audio output on my hard disk as wave file. Up to now I have done by running the command pacat --record -d alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo.monitor | sox -t raw -r 44100 -s -L -b 16 -c 2 - "output.wav This records not only the flash output but every sound sent to the speakers including desktop effect sounds etc. It is also sensible to the volume, that is the recorded sound's volume depends on the volume sent to the speakers. Because of this I can't change the speaker output volume when recording. Fortunately I found a solution: https://en.opensuse.org/User:Gnyers/RecordFlashAudioOutput This gives instructions how to record the flash audio only: 1. Create a virtual stream For a clean recording without any "contamination" from other audio sources create a dedicated virtual stream $ pactl load-module module-null-sink sink_name=FlashPlugin 2. Find out the Sink index of the Flash audio output. Look for the 'plugin-container' binary $ pacmd list-sink-inputs | egrep 'index:|sink:|application.process.binary' index: 0 sink: 0 <alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo> application.process.binary = "plugin-container" index: 503 sink: 0 <alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo> application.process.binary = "mplayer" In this case: INDEX=0 3. Record the "FlashPlugin" sink uncompressed wav: parec -d FlashPlugin.monitor --file-format flash-audio-output-capture.wav This works well, but when I apply the 3rd command (pactl move-sink-input) the sound is redirected and can't be heard on the speakers, I can not monitor what I record. How could I record and monitor the recorded sound simoultaneously? Another question: how can I move the audio output back to the speakers? The instruction doesn't say it. I recently acquired a Lenovo 515 Desktop. I tried to install 11.3 which I had downloaded a while back and accidentally blew away Windows 8.1, which was an ugly mess. One I got it installed and running KDE, it set the resolution of the Dell P990. No other resolution is available. This means that the viewport is too small. Some apps I have scroll bars and others not. I am managing to download 13.1, which was impossible on Windows for some reason. I have no other computer. Has anyone else had suck a problem, and if so, how have you dealt with it. So far I've only noticed this being acute in the Mozilla apps but I'll experiment with others. I pretty much live, some days, with email and web browser, those being Thunderbird and Firefox. This last week or so I've noticed latency problems For example, when I click on 'send' or 'spelling' there is a delay of more than a second before the dialog box comes up. There is no delay with typing in the composition window or scrolling the message list. I get a similar effect in Firefox. If it were just Thunderbird I'd think that Thunderbird(gtk) on KDE on X was having problems creating new windows and dialog boxes (especially modal ones!), but with firefox there gets to be latency n scrolling. I don't think its just rendering as its not simply page or begin/end jumps. Scrolling one line at a time with the mouse wheel or clicking the arrow on the scroll bar has latency. And its a 'sometimes' phenomena and that 'sometimes' can apply to the same page at the same site. When I use the bottom pane to switch application windows there is no latency. hi I'm using Chromium Version 36.0.1985.125 (283153) and Opera 12.16 and opera plays vids but Chromium doesn't. I downloaded updates via "zypper -l up" this morning and a new flash-player version was installed. It was working fine yesterday. Is anyone else having this issue? Google has not been my friend on this topic, unless I'm running Ubuntu, which I am not. I am running openSuSE 12.3. Can anyone point to a 12.3-friendly way to get a compressor and equalizer going? A limiter if such exists would be great too. Preferably one which can be handled via alsamixer or similar, as I do not generally run the KDE or gnome environments/apps. For quite some time, and across a couple versions of OpenSuse (13.1 currently) I've had terrible problems with Firefox. It displays the usual memory leak problems that programs often show, getting slower and slower until it becomes unresponsive until I kill it and restart. Sometimes it happens within minutes of restarting, so I think it's related to whatever technology the web pages are using. I just did one of those FaceBook polls where you select radio buttons, and that one stopped Firefox dead in it's tracks. Over the past year, I've upgraded Firefox through official channels. In the past I would boot into oS in Level #1 and then execute, as root, the command- mount -o remount,ro /dev/sda<x> followed by e2fsck dev/sda<x> However, when I try to do same at the moment I get the 'error' message stating that "sda<x> is BUSY. I need to check the condition of the file system to determine whether my HDD is failing or it is the ext4 file system is corrupted. (I am running oS 13.1 with the latest updates and with KDE 14.4.x and kernel 3.16.1-8.x.) I have a 160GB 3.5" Disk for my swap and root partitions and it has a few bad sectors. I would like to change this disk to a 2.5" 160GB Disk I also have a 500GB 3.5" disk for my home partition that I would like to replace with 2x1TB 2.5" in RAID1 (Mirror) Does anyone have any advice on how I should go about upgrading my disks? I have not had to do this in linux before and would like to get it right first time. All I know is that cloning the disk in the case of my root drive will not work due to the disk ID but I cannot find a working guide on how to do this correctly.. I have no clue what to do for the RAID. My MoBo supports RAID, should I use this functionality or set up a software RAID with opensuse? What are the steps to replace a disk in a mirror if one was to fail? Is it a simple process like on my FreeNAS? Hello: I would like to listen and record programs from this streamed radio program: http://radio.hrt.hr/ Click on "Slušaj uživo". This opens a window with a flash player and the stream is played by flash player. The stream's exact address is: http://www.hrt.hr/streamf/PROGRAM1 It also starts buffering the program and you can move the slider backward and forward for selecting what to play. The maximum time interval for this buffering is 30 minutes. My questions: 1. What kind of streaming is this exactly? Is there any way to play the stream with another program/application than flash player? For example a command line tool which does not require GUI interface. 2. How and where is the buffered sound stored? What is the mechanism of being able to go back and forward within the 30 minutes time frame? Is the sound buffered in computer memory, on hard disk, or on the stream server? How could I find it out? 3. If I turn off playing the stream by clicking the stop button the buffered sound/time is lost. Turning on it again starts the buffering from 0 min again. Would it be possible somehow to recover the previously buffered sound? I'd appreciate any opinion or suggestion. I have noticed that messages sent to mailing lists appear to be duplicated, but further inspection shows each copy to be partial, with a bit more text added to each one, until the final version, which is as it was when I clicked the 'Send' button. I haven't changed any settings, and the 'Copies and Folders' setting appears to be correct (ie. save drafts on the IMAP Drafts folder of my ISP), but the Drafts folder is empty, even while I compose this message. Maybe I should revert to TB 24.7, but then I'd be missing out on security patches. Anyone else seen this behaviour? [opensuse] incorrect Firefox version numbering in Online Update

Since the latest Firefox was offered this week in the official Online Update for 13.1, it displays in the accompanying info as a 'Security update to Firefox 32', yet the actual packages show they will be updated to 31.1. Thunderbird meanwhile says it will be updated to 31.1 and says nothing about 32. What's going on? Have the Firefox packages been misnumbered or are they not the correct ones? [opensuse] Firefox Tab Group problem - my google fu ran out

An upgrade seems to have broken my use of the Tab Groups mechanism. It used to work that sending a tab to a tab group removed it from the main/master group on screen. That way I could categorise and keep each tab group 'pure' - that is for one subject only. But an upgrade seems to have broken that. Now I can send a tab to a tab group but it doesn't get removed. I'm left with the overload. I've googled around but all I find is about install it and how great it is, not about this problem. Perhaps its too new a problem. [opensuse] Installing 13.1 on usb-drive

Hi, In between meetings i tried to install 13.1/64 onto a test-laptop from work. As I am not sure if i may wipe the disk-content i thought installing it on the an usb-stick. Isn't it enough to use grub2 and tell yast to install the bootloader at /boot or /root and remove any attempts to look at /dev/sda (the hd) and /dev/sdc (iso-image) And for the rest, I only manualy partitioned sdb with a 512MB /boot and 7G /-partition. Rest i left to default. Tried a couple of times, sometimes i got a grub-install error, sometimes it completed without error, but never a working result. i did turned of secure-boot, and used compatibility mode in the bios. [opensuse] Konqueror 4.14.0 missing almost all bookmarks.

I updated to KDE 4.14.0 from the JDE-Current repo on Saturday. This morning on starting Konqueror found almost all my bookmarks missing. Bookmark editor does not show them either. Example: [CODE] Bookmarks Suse Bugs Documents more sub folders [/CODE] There are no bookmarks in any of the 8 sub folders of SUSE. Same with all other folders and sub folders. Looking back in my backups it also looks like the export function in Bookmark Manager is also not working . Folders with more the one level (Multiple subfolders do not appear to be backed up (The folder is saved but none of the links in it are). Has anyone else seen thiis behavior in 13.1 Kmail 4.14.0? Any ideas how to recover them? My last backup (I use MC as route to copy the whole /home directory). that looked OK was 12/31/13 but the links were in Konqueror on Saturday when i used several of them. I will be searching Bugzilla and turn in a bug report. Hello, I received lot of openSUSE usb flash device (8Gb), but empty. writing one at a time with imagewriter is very time consuming (approx 10 mn each). But I have 4 usb ports on my tower's front. My mainboard has place for two DDR1 memory sticks. I have two identical V-GeN 1GB sticks which should be the max for my mainboard. With one stick in the first slot the computer runs okay. As soon as I insert the second stick in slot number two the booting of openSUSE 13.1, Tumbleweed ends with a kernel panic. Have also tried a fresh install with kernel 3.11.6.4. No luck. With that kernel the machine instantly reboots without any information whats however. According to this article, 13.1 is the latest Evergreen version and for that reason I just installed it on my firewall. However, there doesn't appear to be a link for making 13.1 Evergreen. [opensuse] Opensuse 13.2 and 12.3 lifetime?

Hello all, I think the release of OpenSuSE 13.2 is a bit late as the normal, but how about the end of life of 12.3 ? It is annunced at 15 Sep, but i clearly read * openSUSE 12.3 <http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:12.3> - Sep 15th 2014 which is in *13 days (2 months after release of 13.2)* *But, if the 13.2 is realesed in november, as i can read, the support for the 12.3 is until december ? All, An issue recently came up on StackOverflow.com regarding shell scripts related to the use of 'ls -opts' to populate a loop structure in a shell script. Suffice it to say *in sum*, it is good practice to avoid this use of ls and to search for an alternative solution to fit your needs. That being so, there are some cases where the loop needs data in a sort order fashion, easily provided by ls, but requiring tortured, piped multiple external calls otherwise. The tweenies (those that 'know not' and 'know not' that they 'know not') took the position that simply mentioning ls as a method to feed a loop automatically condemned you to roast in hell for eternity. (despite TLDP BASH HowTo being riddled with examples) Those that 'know', said wait a minute, it is a portability issue, and the problems protected against are just those instances where non-printing control characters are embedded in the filename, such as a newline, carriage-return or null-terminating character inside the filename itself. Taking the position that if you know the set of filenames at issue does not contain any embedded nonsense (like daily server logs, etc.), then there are no other hidden adverse effects from using ls in this capacity. Certainly you would not be condemned to hell or have your eyes plucked out by dragons if you did. So that brings up the question: "Just which files do have embedded control characters (intentionally, and not as the result of some horrible mistake)?" The only example I have uncovered thus far is the OSX 'icon' file that has a 'carriage-return' intentionally embedded as part of the filename. What others have you run across or can think of? I could think of no better or more experienced group to consult that the good old "brain-trust". So just how prevalent are these filenames with embedded control characters? -- David C. I was looking for a solution to the toshiba problem. I do note the power supply for the Dell is larger and likely has more amperage to support a system. I am left wondering if the longstanding issue of SuSE wireless setups being a pain if done after install has again popped up, therefore requiring a reinstall with the wireless connected forcing the system to install all needed software. Its more complicated with so small a screen 7x10 inches. I have also tested the Engenius on Desktops and they work fine as well. this is either a Toshiba issue or a SuSE issue and I was hoping someone here has experience to save me from a reinstall. Hello, Just installed factory dvd (on virtualbox), default is BTRFS and *lots* of partitions/volumes. any *simple* pointer to some clues about how to deal with it?
