I have gone back to 12.3. I installed 13.1 and it made the resolution 1600 x something. But the cursor was invisible so I couldn't change the resolution in KDE settings. 12.3 only give me 720x360 but I am coping. I can't get to the grub menu because I have to use the installation cd to boot the hard disk, so I can't enter nomodeset. I can't get to yast. I will ask about that in a separate email. Same advice you didn't reply to last time: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2014-09/msg00224.html It was hard for me to locate, because you changed from Bob to Robert. This time the config file you save as /etc/X11/xorg.conf is smaller, because automagic works a bit better in 12.3 than in 11.3: http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/SUSE/Xorg/xorg.conf-bobrea2 Images documenting my tests of that file: http://fm.no-ip.com/SS/Tmp/bobreaBIG41-0768-096.png http://fm.no-ip.com/SS/Tmp/bobreaM7NCD-0768-096.png Note that to use the VESA driver, which will only be a temporary workaround until you have an X driver that supports your gfxchip, nomodeset needs to be included on the kernel cmdline in the Grub menu. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Thanks, I will get there. Things got a little screwy. I installed files from the old disk, but included some dot files and I feared they had fouled things up. So I reinstalled. I tried to run an updater but KDE wouldn't start. After reinstalling it still wouldn't start, but it gave me a reason, cannot write to /home/bob/ICEauthority. Eventually I logged in as root and used the acl thing to change it. Now i can log in as me. But still no su and no libreoffice, which I need.. I am expecting a more modern lcd monitor mid-next-week. I will try to figure out the advice about su, and reply to that as well. Can you tell I am a kind of noob. been a while since I used the command line. -- Bob Rea mailto:gapetard@stsams.org http://www.petard.us http://www.petard.us/blog http://www.petard.us/gallery America, it was a wonderful country until they took it private and turned it into a theme park of itself -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
