[opensuse] OrgX KDE Mozilla latency
So far I've only noticed this being acute in the Mozilla apps but I'll experiment with others. I pretty much live, some days, with email and web browser, those being Thunderbird and Firefox. This last week or so I've noticed latency problems For example, when I click on 'send' or 'spelling' there is a delay of more than a second before the dialog box comes up. There is no delay with typing in the composition window or scrolling the message list. I get a similar effect in Firefox. If it were just Thunderbird I'd think that Thunderbird(gtk) on KDE on X was having problems creating new windows and dialog boxes (especially modal ones!), but with firefox there gets to be latency n scrolling. I don't think its just rendering as its not simply page or begin/end jumps. Scrolling one line at a time with the mouse wheel or clicking the arrow on the scroll bar has latency. And its a 'sometimes' phenomena and that 'sometimes' can apply to the same page at the same site. When I use the bottom pane to switch application windows there is no latency. And no I'm not running Plasma and yes I am fully up to date | Alias | Name 1 | KDE_Current | KDE_Current 2 | KDE_Current_Extra | KDE_Current_Extra 3 | Kernel_standard | Kernel_standard 4 | Toganm_Photography | Toganm Photography 5 | X11_Xorg | X11_Xorg 6 | LibreOffice | LibreOffice 7 | Filesystems | BuildService - filesystems 8 | download.opensuse.org-mozilla | BuildService - Mozilla [snip] Any ideas why the latency? -- The only secure computer is one that's unplugged, locked in a safe, and buried 20 feet under the ground in a secret location... and i'm not even too sure about that one" -- Dennis Huges, FBI. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have also experienced latency but in my case it is with the save page dialog which can take as long as 5-10 seconds to popup. One thing I have noticed when this happens is a plug-in that hogs resources (can't remember which one). Since you're using KDE I assume you're on a Linux system. When you see this problem try opening a task manager and set it for cpu usage to see if that is your problem or if FF or TB is hogging resources. Tom
Just updated to Tbird 31.1.0 and I'm not seeing any more latency than usual either spelling pop up or sending or scrolling. The FIRST TIME clicking Save As there is a delay, certainly not 5 seconds, but after that first time it is instantaneous. Maybe we have to look at what video cards are involved? I'm using an old radeon with the community drivers. -- Explain again the part about rm -rf / -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I upgraded a few days ago and it hasn't helped.

NOT! Its about "what has changed" Recently: Xorg has changed KDE has changed Mozilla has changed. Video card & drivers has not changed. It now takes 9 seconds between click on 'send' and the confirm modal dialog box coming up -- /"\ \ / ASCII Ribbon Campaign X Against HTML Mail / \ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Even when 'idling' the "plugin-container" is eating >60& of the CPU, right there at the top of 'top'. I've pared away the extensions. Is there any way to determine which "plugin" is the culprit other than by disabling them one by one? -- /"\ \ / ASCII Ribbon Campaign X Against HTML Mail / \ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I suspect you could have done the one by one test in less time than it takes to post the question. But you might try Ksysgaurd because it will blow up a process into a process tree (there is probably some funky top-foo to do the same). Not running anything here that shows up. (I barely use FF at all). -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Actually I did and that is not the case. I have now disabled and removed: kparts-plugin nspluginwrapper icedtea-web Now the "plugin-container" isn't at the top of 'top'. It not even visible! I'll report on the overall effect of latency later. If anyone knows a good reason to pay whatever the performance price for those extensions I'd like to know. -- /"\ \ / ASCII Ribbon Campaign X Against HTML Mail / \ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
