Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. [opensuse] installation error

Started to intall 11.4 on a new laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. Installation from DVD downloaded (MDsum checked). After the various choices of partioning and software (accepted defaults for partionning and mostly for software), when installation begins, it stops almost immediately with: failure occurred during following action: creating volume /dev/sd7. System error code was: -1007 sda7 was to be the swap; sda8 root (ext4), and sd9 home (ext4). sda1 is Windows/C; sda2 is Windows/D. I suspect the reason for using 7, 8, and 9 is that this is the third try, and that the first one set up 3,4 and 5. The Windows partition appears to have been correctly shrunk, and Windows will still boot. The installation suggests these three linux partitions be set up (and gives me the chace to alter them), so my guess is that there is space there but unpartitioned. When the error is presented, it asks if I want to go ahead anyway: so far I have said no. Machine specs: Intel mobile i5-241M 2.3Ghz; NVIDIA GT 555M 2GB PCIe; 8 GB DDR-3 1333; motherboard: Intel HM65 Express Chipset Mainboard. Suggestions? Hello all, I have do a fresh update of an OpenSuse to OpenSuSE 11.4. All works fine, except the update process. It always resolve download.opensuse.org into the IPV6 address. The result is the following: zypper ref Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.4/repodata/repomd.xml': Error code: Connection failed Error message: Failed to connect to 2001:67c:2178:8::13: Network is unreachable I have tryied also to put into hosts the entry like: 195.135.221.134 download.opensuse.org but nothing, always resolv to ipvs. But the host command resolve it like this: host download.opensuse.org download.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.134 download.opensuse.org has IPv6 address 2001:67c:2178:8::13 Ipv6 is disabled: cat /etc/modprobe.d/ipv6.conf #install ipv6 /bin/true Urgent help needed, i am stuck.... Now I have a bootable kernel I have worked though matters with 11.4 All the personal config came though intact :-) A lot of the system config has been altered and I'm not sure if that is just 11.3/11.4 differences or what. These are the problems I see now 1. KDM does not work. The greeter fails. Please fix your file. 3. Latency on menubar Just about every application, thunderbird & firefox in particular, but all the KDE applications as well, have a delay when top menubar items are clicked. I am used to this on LiveCD where the system has to drag in the relevant stuff from the CD but not on a real system. The KDE applications seem to cache items, the GTK applications don't seem to. 4. No sound. Sound has stopped working. Testing with LiveCD tells me its not a hardware problem The mixer icon doesn't appear in the system tray on starting KDE4 and when it is started everything is set to zero. Even then sound isn't working. Hello: I would like to configure my kyocera parallel printer in YaST, openSUSE 11.4. If I go to Harwdware>Printer in YaST the "Printer Configurations" window opens but it only says: "There is no print queue." If I click "Add" the "Add New Printer Configuration" window opens which says: "No connections. Try 'Detect More' or use the 'Connection Wizard'." Detect more does not find anything. Clicking 'Connection Wizard' opens 'Connection Wizard' window. Under "Directly connected device>Parallel port" nothing is listed. What can I do with this? openSUSE 11.2 could find an configure the printer perfectly right away on the very same hardware. [opensuse] Associating an image with a Desktop icon

I have a Java applications which I use frequently, and for which I have placed hard links on the Desktop, to make them easier to start. The icons are generic, and therefore confusin, and I would like to replace them a recognizable images. I have such images in png and other formats, but it is not clear to me how to assign them to the applications. hi all I'm having a real disaster with kmail2. 1. I accidentally deleted my local folders in the kmail2 Accounts config and now kmail2 crashes with an error "Failed to retrieve akonadi resource" (or something like that). It does not give me a chance to re-add it. 2. Tried to modify an existing POP account (also in kmail Accounts config) but it does not allow me to edit the password for the login id to the POP server. [opensuse] Plasma-Desktop crashing

I recently got a new laptop (a ThinkPad X220 with Intel i915 video card) and am running into a problem where KDE plasma-desktop will crash periodically. The bottom bar disappears and the background goes black (there aren't windows open over it) and after a second or so it starts back up again and seems to work fine for a while until it happens again (maybe every 10 minutes. I have seen similar behavior with SuSE 11.1 (I think), but in that case my home partition was full - there is plenty of space now. I am running fully updated SuSE 11.4 KDE Base version 4.6.0-6.6.2-x86_64 from OpenSUSE-11.4-11.4-0 kdebase4-workspace is 4.6.0-10.15.1-x86_64 I have looked around on this, and can't seem to find anything, but I am not really sure what I am looking for. I have turned off all desktop effects. Logs can be found at the bottom of this message. All... I have had a significant crash of the whole RPM system on my 11.4 x86_64 and I can't find the correct answer. Using Yast2, I was downloading all the files I needed to do in order to load perl-bootloader. Yast2 decided it couldn't finish the install and died. Now when I try and run RPM I get the same thing: rpmdb: /var/lib/rpm/Packages: unsupported hash version: 9 error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Invalid argument (22) Searching through the web I've found cd /var/lib/rpm rm -fv __db* mv -v Packages Packages-BAK db_dump Packages-BAK | db45_load Packages rpm -vv --rebuilddb This was not successful Thanks to an old post by Carlos, I found the backup, but I get the same error zypper gets me: error while loading shared libraries: librpm.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Smart's answer is 'rpm' python module is not available Yast2 never comes up. Trying to reinstall python-rpm gets me nowhere. I really don't want to do a reinstall.. Since switching to x86_64 I've had more problems then I did with 6.3. I want to include a command in a shell script that will make a kde directory/folder/whatever-we-call-it appear and be opened in the desktop when the command runs in the script. Does anyone know what such a command would be? Maybe it's more complicated that a single command since the focus also changes? Hello; (I may have sent this to the wrong list earlier). I have two SATA drives, one SuSE and one Fedora. The Fedora drive has a usual boot partition and a second partition which is a volume group. For some reason, the volumes on the volume group are not active when I boot SuSE on the other drive. I want to mount the Fedora drive when using SuSE. I used to be able to do this but I had a bad crash and had to reinstall stuff and now I cannot mount the Fedora drive from SuSE I've used lvdisplay to list the volume properties and the LV Status is "unavailable". Can an expert tell me if this is the correct command to activate the volume? [opensuse] CPU Pegging out at 99%

Something is pegging my CPU at 99%. Top shows dbus-daemon. When this happens no other programs will launch. Existing running programs are very sluggish. How can I determine what is causing this? It occurs every few days. Running 11.4 KDE on a clean install. Switching to runelvel 3 does not cure the issue, only a reboot. This does not make sense to me. Right not that i like it at all but it is the default player here goes Amarok fails completely with the following report KGlobal::locale::Warning your global KLocale is being recreated with a valid main component instead of a fake component, this usually means you tried to call i18n related functions before your main component was created. You should not do that since it most likely will not work amarok: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/libgstreamer-0.10.so.0: undefined symbol: g_error_get_type unnamed app(7483): Communication problem with "amarok" , it probably crashed. Hello: As I could not make Cisco vpnclient work in openSUSE 11.4 I have to look for another solution. Therefore I installed and configured shrew/ike as described at http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/how-faq-forums/u… I can start ikea, load the vpn profile and can connect. Shrew soft VPN Connect windows shows: bringing up tunnel... network device configured tunnel enabled But there is no traffic through the tunnel, eg. I can't connect to other computers by ssh: ~> ssh -vvv -p 146 10.10.3.66 OpenSSH_5.8p1, OpenSSL 1.0.0c 2 Dec 2010 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: Applying options for * debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 debug1: Connecting to 10.10.3.66 [10.10.3.66] port 146. ssh stops at this point. Hi to all, After I power off my system, I still have power to my mouse and keyboard as indicated by the laser light on the mouse and the numlock light on the keyboard. Is there any way that SUSE can help me figure out if this is a power module problem on my motherboard? Do I need to update the BIOS on my motherboard? Before I was using windows XP, and it did the same thing, but I just installed openSUSE 11.4 (x86_64) so I was thinking that there might be something that is fixable using SUSE but was not fixable using windows (I have a lot of other reasons for going to SUSE besides this). [opensuse] Kmail migration no 2

With the update to 4.7 I was surprised to get a kmail migration. Migration was successful but since then I cannot use kmail anymore.The error message is: KMail encountered a fatal error and will terminate now. The error was: You do not have read/write permission to your inbox folder. This is a nogo ;). No idea where kmail got this info. Looking into the kmail data and inbox does not give an indication about what went amiss. PS. If I leave this Error message I can look into the kmail emails. Found that the migration although finished with the message that it had finished succesful, only transfered 9 from the 31 messages from the inbox. From the suse box 12 from the 496 messages and from my family folder 0 (yes zero) from 2545 messages. My problem may have been caused by the fact that I have the mail box in MAIL on my /home directory and I can use it from several opensuse versions. Earlier today I retrieved mail and found about ten incoming messages. I began to answer one of these, which took about a half hour (long thoughtful reply), and then noticed that there was only one remaining message in the inbox -- one that had arrived during the half hour, the others having vanished. While I stared at the screen aghast, the one remaining also evaporated before my eyes -- while my hands were nowhere near mouse or keyboard, so not on my initiative. Since I did not set such a behavior (in the inbox, of all places) that may be the default behavior. A week or so ago, I thought something of the sort had happened, but dismissed the idea as a failure of my own memory, since nobody in his right mind would program such a default. Now I've seen it. I am FWD-ing this response because following my installation of KDE4.7 yesterday, Thunderbird (5.0), oSs version, for one but not the only app., is behaving as if it is on some hallucinating 'substance' :'( : any mouse left-clicks (LCs) act as if they are double-clicks and can close down either Fffirefox or TB when I click on the "X" top RH corner, and all keys repeat at random when I type (see the "oSs version" above which I deliberately left unaltered). I noted that you are using 4 digits in your masks but fstab is using only 3. In coming to grips with this permissions 'hassle' I read that the 4-digit approach should be used because it leaves the 4th digit undefined and therefore in its default state. Does this mean, if you know that is, that either 1) openSUSE is not following the more prudent method of coding or 2) openSUSE does not recognise/use the 4-digit approach? Thanks again for your help. I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and when trying to print, I get this error in /var/log/cups/error_log libusb couldn't open USB device /dev/bus/usb/001/004: Permission denied. libusb requires write access to USB device nodes. I am looking some tutorial or info to configure SASL authentication on Konversation irc. Recently I was trying to connect channels #opensuse-xxx irc freenode via 3.5G Modem. This do not let me to connect because it needs a SASL authentication to connect to irc freenode this way. So it looks like I am connecting via some proxy before it goes to freenode servers. I have a registered Nick on Freenode. So I thought this was enough to be authenticated anytime to the freenode servers. The only info I found is related to Tor Proxy. I don't want to be banned from #opensuse-xxxx chanels because this proxy used. Besides, I would like to know if there is a way to hide my IP address without hassle. Some privacy is not a bad idea. So using opensuse cloak (/opensuse/member/name/) is a plus but cannot find the way to make it despite I spent hours googling for it. I think there is something wrong with my network driver. YAST says that I am running a VT6102 *(not sure what that means), but since I installed linux on this machine and then connected the cat5 cable to the internet, our internet has slowed down significantly. I have an msi k9vgm_v motherboard and have connected the cat5 cable from my d-link router into the ethernet connection on the board. [opensuse] FireFox 5.0 locks up system...

Hi all, I have just installed SuSE 11.4 and over all its very nice. But the new FireFox seems to be locking the system up. About 3-4 times a day it hard locks the system, nothing works. So I have to unplug the power to restart the computer. I tried to downgrade back to FF4, but I can't get the system to accept it. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks! I remember there being something about a documentation manual installed somewhere on my pc when I installed SUSE, but I can't remember how to find it. [opensuse] Cannot write to Windows partition(s)

Apologies for asking this question which I know has been asked before and to which I did know the answer but after searching the oS documentation and googling I am still non the wiser. I just installed oS 11.4 on a set of drives which also have XP installed. From oS I can read files from the Windows partitions but cannot write to them as user (but can as root) - so it is a permission problem. The (typical) entry in fstab for the Windows partions is: /dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WDxxxxx -part8 /windows/G ntfs-3g users,gid=users,fmask=133,dmask=022,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0 Could someone please point me to the place where I can solve this problem? Dear all, I have been struggling with setting openVPN for a long time. I wish to build an openVPN connection between home and my workplace. I got two files from the workplace: ca.crt and ta.key, and of course, the login/password pair. I have oS 11.4 and KDE 4.6.5. Could somebody tell me, how can I set up this connection. How can I check that it is really working. For this I usually try to connect to a literature database available only for "insiders". All help is welcome. I have an 11.2 system that I want to use to compile a kernel driver. The kernel that is installed is almost the same as the one I need (same version, but the -desktop version rather then the desired -default version). I guess I can get the proper version compiled if I install the desired kernel headers. I do not in any way want to replace the existing kernel install. All I want it a parallel install of the headers needed to do my compile. I have the RPMS that are needed: kernel-default-devel-2.6.31.14-0.6.1.i586.rpm kernel-source-2.6.31.14-0.6.1.noarch.rpm kernel-syms-2.6.31.14-0.6.1.i586.rpm Would these be enough? The kernel-source and kernel-syms match the current kernel (I am fairly certain). It is the kernel-default-devel that I think is the issue. Can I install these so that they do not mess up the installed kernel, but are in the expected directories for their version of the kernel? After the last zypper dup I got an unknown install with the name hdjmod-kmp-pae. Looking into the hdjmod thing I found that it has something to do with the Hercules DJ device. No idea why zypper dup thinks that I should need a DJ program and never found any indication that I have a Hercules card or such on my machine. I want to build a site to sell stamps, it needs to be able to show photos of the new stamps and have a way to sell them. I need, at least, to be able to use paypal. After last week's "zypper up" update of VirtualBox (7/21), neither of my Windows guests will load (XP & 7). Linux 11.3 is the host. Error messsage: Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. --- Running /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup produces: Recompiling VirtualBox vboxadd kernel module, NOT. It has been packaged. done So nothing happens. Rebooting has no effect. Since the updates were not a new version, I cannot roll back to the previous version. Suggestions? Since CNN.com updated its site a few weeks ago, I am unable to watch its video clips. Instead, I get a message that they need "Flash Player v10.1 or better". What I have here is v10.2, which one would think should be adequate. In the past, when something like this would happen, it was usually because NoScript wasn.t permitting the clip, but clicking on the NoScript icon doesn't help this now. Several years ago, I and friends bought 3 identical refurb LG DVD recorders from Woot.com for less than $100US each, all made during various months in 2007. After their warranties expired, all failed with up to 3 bad caps. They've all worked nicely as ATSC/QAM tuners since I replaced all caps of same brand as the bad ones, but all 3 can't read and/or write DVDs reliably any more. I'm not saying you should expect premature failure from your new display, as I have no idea how many plants LG has making mainboards for displays or DVD recorders, or how many cap sources they use, but as 1280x1024 has become so rare, it wouldn't surprise me to learn your new LCD isn't nearly as new as your purchase receipt. In reviewing my firewall settings, I found that the firewall in my router (D-link 2670U) is running, but the SuSE firewall 0f my v11.4 laptop is not. Hi One of my logins has a option of 2 languages, English and Thai. It switches between the languages quite happily but when its on the English one, the menu is mainly in Thai. I can't get it back to using the correct language for the keyboard. It tells me ": echo " ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid."; echo " include/generated/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are missing.";\ echo " Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src So I do that (I think) and I get this: make: *** No rule to make target `oldconfig'. A variety of them. Most common is the machine freezing, probably a GPU related panic. No panic message in the logs, just freeze. Sometimes the cursor freezes as well. Sometimes its preceded by what I can only call 'reticulation', if you know the effect on photographic emulsion -- a sort of overlay of green pixelation that renders things unreadable. Sometimes, not always. The freeze is often total, the laptop doesn't respond to pings. But not always. And sometimes I can ssh in and do a proper shutdown. [opensuse] Not sure what to make of this...

I'm running 11.3 on one hdd and W2K on a second hdd. On both I have the app needed to play an online rpg (GemStone IV). On the linux hdd, the app works fine, but I can't get the 'extra' to work with it so I can use the maps (it's called 'lich'). On the winblows side, this all worked quite well at one time (nothing to do with this post). I happened to notice yesterday, that after I'd played a short while on the linux hdd, I decided I wanted to try the windows app, just to see if I could get it working again. I left all the 'settings' (fonts I use for the most part on the linux hdd app) as they were, of course. Logged out and restarted the system to get to grub and choose windows. No problem. I boot into windows, get dialed in to my ISP and then start the app. I was able to get online into the game, *but*, the app was using the linux fonts! I have nothing installed on the windows hdd except Warcraft III and this app, oh and Firefox. That's it. no new fonts other than what the w2k cd installed. So, I adjusted the settings on the app to 'tahoma 10 pt', logged out and restarted the computer. Got to grub and chose opensuse 11.3. I get dialed in online and open the app and lo and behold, the app has the 'tahoma' settings! How is this possible? I don't have anything installed on the linux hdd that should be changing anything automagically on the winblows hdd, as far as I know. I *can* go to the windows hdd using krusader or whatever and copying back and forth, but that's just simple file stuff I do, nothing like installing anything from one hdd to another, like an app or anything. It has me a little nervous, because it seems like this is an easy way to somehow get onto my linux hdd and 'do stuff', no? Is this something I should be worrying about or is it just a fluke of RAM or something like that? Most of the games (Call of Duty, etc) I've tried will install - but - on play, which requires the same install CD, says that it's NOT the real CD but a backup and load the REAL install CD. Any ideas on the problem ? And a work around ? The small laser printer Samsung ML-1710 was supported until openSUSE 11.3 with a Foomatic gdi ppd. This printer is no longer listed under the CUPS+Gutenprint ppds for OS 11.4. Only 1750 is listed and it does not work with the older printer. Is there a way to use the old ppd? In openSUSE 11.0, I could use an advanced option in Knetworkmanager notifications to run a script, when WiFi connected. I used this to run rdisc6 to get IPv6 info from the router. I don't see this option in 11.4. Since there is no available driver for the Intel HD Integrated Graphics card on the Intel MB I bought last week, I've inquired about supported PCI Express cards that I could install instead. My usual merchant carries cards of Ndivia and ATI, and has in stock ATI HD3650. A web search assures me that this card belongs to the Redeon series; <man ati> says that Radeon is supported, so I assume that this one is. He also has similar Nvidia cards. I am shying away from Nvidia because I have seen over the years so many discussions about difficulties, perhaps quirks in the available drivers, that make them seem like avoidable trouble. And yet I know that many buy and use them, so I am perhaps exaggerating the risk. I am exploring changing the way our remote openSUSE systems (not connected to the internet) maintain proper time. We have GPS devices in these system, but have thus far only used the time for our own devious purposes. We have never tried to maintain the system time. The popular wisdom on the gpsd list (all things related to GPS access on Linux) is that one should use chrony (http://chrony.tuxfamily.org) rather then NTP for this purpose. The reason given is that NTP does not deal well with a time source that is perhaps seldom available. See http://chrony.tuxfamily.org/FAQ.html#question_2.1 In order to use chrony, hwclock must be disabled on system shutdown. This is because chrony would like to be the one that sets the clock when the system comes up - perhaps without a GPS time source - but keeping the time as close to correct as possible. If, on openSUSE systems, I disable hwclock on shutdown only, what madness might ensue? I don't mean 'Will the time be wrong?' I assume that chrony will take care of that. But perhaps there are some other system activities that are dependent on hwclock running at shutdown? [opensuse] KMail + KDE wallet malfunction after upgrade to 11.4

I recently upgraded to OpenSuse 11.4. I use KMail, and store my SMTP password using KWallet. But for some reason Kmail is having problems. When I start the system up, kwallet opens immediately, because I use it for my wireless password as well. This does not have any problems: the wallet opens, the I get the wireless connection, and it all works. The wallet configuration shows that KMail is always allowed access. But when I start KMail and try to use it to send email, it immediately pops up a dialog box asking for my SMTP password. I type it in, and click the option "store password". Kmail responds that KWallet is not available, and would I like to store it in plain text file? Then KWallet pops up a notification saying "There have been repeated failed attempts to gain access to a wallet. An application may be misbehaving." I tried going into KWalletManager and deleting all fields related to kmail, then saving the password from scratch. It did not help. Anyone experienced something like that? Maybe my best bet would be to return this one and get the same as yours. I have tried Fedora and Ubuntu compiled binaries, both are basically dirs with all packages/binaries/libs complied inside. Sage starts and aborts with dubious Python errors. It should not relate to Python which ships with SuSE because Sage uses its own Python binaries. I have seen reports from other users trying to compile Sage on SuSE. It could be quite time consuming since Sage is huge - around 2 GB. [opensuse] Problem finding QT libraries while compiling a program

I'm trying to compile Kdvdauthor and ./configure exits with: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation! I have both /usr/lib/qt3 and /usr/lib64/qt4. I've set QTDIR to /usr/lib64/qt4 and that didn't help. I've had this problem before and never figured out how to fix it. Any suggestions would be great. This is not about interactive observation of time with commands that are run after login. We're talking about syslog timestamps that were made during boot, actually the exact timestamp in the syslog message that ntpd has been started. This timestamp is 2 hours off. In addition, specifically I have posted a series of steps to check proper working of /etc/init.d/boot.clock, to analyse the root cause of that wrong timestamp in the ntpd startup syslog message. This has nothing to do at all with any interactive commands. Roger's issue is definitively not a problem of user commands that are issued on any command line. syslog doesn't care about any TZ value, definitively; I hope we don't have to argue about that. Since the error already appears in syslog timestamps during system startup, any search for problems in his interactive command-line setup is misleading and distracts from his problem's real root cause. [opensuse] Kernel - OOPS message appeared on desktop - What Happened??

Guys, Today in 11.4, the screen went black for a second and then a little message, sort of like the thunderbird new mail notification, appeared and said that I had experienced a "Kernel Oops" and that I should report it to kernel.org. The dialog gave me the option to report it, which I did, and in a few seconds another similar dialog appeared telling me that I had successfully reported it to kernel.org. My question is where can I find what happened and what was reported? I'm running kernel-desktop-2.6.37.6-0.5.1.x86_64 and I presume the little dialog was the result of: kerneloops-0.12-41.1.x86_64 kerneloops-applet-0.12-41.1.x86_64 Before my 'rpm -qa | grep kernel' just now, I had no idea these things existed. Checking the logs, it looks like an iphone was plugged in and then the Radeon GPU locked up?? I am not the best at reading these things and if anybody can decipher it a bit more, I would welcome the help. My guess is that the information between the: ------------[ cut here ]------------ <snip> ---[ end trace 2eeba6386f2c0ac1 ]--- is what got reported. If so, can I use the trace info to look this stuff up on kernel.org? Wouldn't it be helpful for them to have the kernel messages before the '--[ cut here ]--' as well? What say the experts? As I wrote, you have to make these packages yourself. So far, zypper recognized when a 32bit-version of some mandatory library was missing and either installed the respective package or complained about it, when it was missing. I have more the other problem, that zypper sometimes wants to install a 32bit library package and I have no idea at all what pulls in that dependency. An other issue, which resembles more your situation, is that YaST/zypper do these installations only for mandatory dependencies. Both libtcnative and libsvnjavahl are not mandatory; Tomcat and SVN-Java work without them. So, if no fitting packages are found, none are installed. So, to answer your question: You have to hunt down all optional JNI stuff or all JNI stuff that is used by software that you install besides the openSUSE packaging system. You probably have to make familiar yourself with creating local rpm packages or with OBS, since some of the needed packages are definitively not there. Nothing more, nothing less. My second post was precipitated by the fact that after I found the proper kernel-source and installed it, when I tried to "make" the driver and got the "misdconfigured kernel" message. [opensuse] Basket .... not working - HELP!

OUCH Earlier this week I tried using LXDE and messed up the windows decorations .... go back and see that thread :-( Recovery involved zapping ~/.kde4 And being flustered and botherated I forget to back up my baskets OUCH. So, with it all working again, I decided to move the basket storage out of ~/.kde4 and into ~/Documents/Baskets :-) and restored from two weeks ago. Now when I restart basket I get the one basket called "General" and it has nothing in it. In ~/Documents/Baskets are all the things I think should be there. ~/.kde4/share/config/basketsrc correctly points to ~/Documents/Baskets If I try importing I get error messages saying all the dozens of baskets are already there. But they are not displaying. A motivation behind this is to discuss how to improve opensuse as platform for scientific computing. I am in general very satisfied with my shortterm experience of openSUSE, including tumbleweed, but I after my recent switch to this distribution I discovered that quite some packages which are interested in my SC corner are either outdated or not available in the *official* repos. Some of these are: openmpi outdated (1.2.8) libatlas (none) mayavi and enthought related packages (none) python-scipy (none) paraview petsc,trilinos, armadillo (none) netgen, tetgen, triangle (none) bullet (none) cgal, gts (none) scientific python (none) suitesparse? Some of these are spread over different projects like Science and Education, which results in a significant overlap of packages with different version numbers, possible incompatibilities etc. So an idea might be to talk about how to improve the situation, software which might be interesting to package (maybe even trying to start a unifying SC project) or about what else comes into your mind! That's not the problem. If you start ntpd with only localhost, and if a time server gets available later whose time is different by more than 20 minutes, ntpd will terminate itself. (To be more precise: the difference must be as large for some polls, 8 IIRC, to get a full reach shift register of 0377. But polling is not good for Roger's automotive IT use case and should be avoided anyhow, we have already agreed upon that.) More relevant, during boot & shutdown, *ONLY* /etc/localtime is used, since no TZ environment variable exists then. You can verify my statement by calling strace hwclock -r >hwclock.log 2>&1 and examining the log file. There you will see that /etc/localtime is opened for reading. [opensuse] Printer USB connection problem

Since some days my serial port has a problem and I am not able to use my local printer. I got aUSB printer adapter cable and expected that that would solve my problem. I started Yast and expected to find the USB connected printer. No printer detected, even with the printer wizzard under the USB connection. Lsusb shows : "Bus 002 Device 004: ID 4348:5584 WinChipHead CH34x printer adapter cable". Is there some trick? As it is (also) a SuSE-issue, posting here might be more appropiate... Hi all, I had to re-install one of my boxes, but it seems I lost support for USB-readers. If I restart pcscd, I got in syslog: "Disabling USB support for pcscd" I went googling but all I found (in Ludovic's blog) that disabling it resulted in better performance for embedded devices. Other references were about an incorrectly installed openct-software, or a outdated version. So after i had re-installed openSuSE (11.4), i installed pcsc-lite-1.7.4-57.1 (from the add-on repo) and its libs, but same results. Anyone around here, that can tell me how to get the old behaviour (supporting usb-readers) back again? =================================================================== >From the man page: "USB SMART CARD READER DRIVERS: USB smart card reader drivers are located in /usr/lib64/readers directory as a bundle. You shall not add a USB driver in /etc/reader.conf file." But no clue about the so-called "bundle" that should reside in either /usr/lib/readers or /usr/lib64/reader And after install libmusclecard-utils (that apperently holds BundleTool). i started it up, but the tools finished directly saying "no drivers exists - exiting" Its manpage says that BundleTool lets you _select_ one from several bundles, but still no clue how te get hold of one. I have a directory /local/usr/bin/sudo, which I use to hold scripts that would normally require root privileges, but I want to start as a user, usually via the menu. I have used visudo to edit the sudo file in the same way as an 11.0 system, where this works as expected. However, I can't seem to get this to work without being asked for the root password. I have added "jknott ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/local/bin/sudo/*", which is supposed to enable running items in that directory without requiring a root password. I have also zypper-locked "java-*-openjdk-devel", though I don't remember why; maybe some left-over from a previous installation. It works very good, very few problems up to now. A few 32bit package versions of Java-related libraries are missing; we recognized libtcnative (for Tomcat) and libsvnjavahl (for Subversion). If you really need them, you have to compile them yourself, or learn OBS usage, or learn to use /usr/lib/mkbaselibs. FWIW, we don't use Eclipse from OBS (wouldn't even know if it's there at all); but install one from Eclipse.org in /opt. We can't rely on any distribution here, since we cannot use Helios and need to stay on Galileo, where JSF 1.2+Facelets still works. If you want to do so, installation notes tell me that we needed to install the additional packages mozilla-xulrunner20.i586 mozilla-xulrunner20-gnome.i586 I don't remember why, maybe to make Eclipse help working. I had big problems in the past when ntpd decides that a time source is too unreliable and either drops it, or maybe even terminates itself because all time sources are too much off. When they suddenly appear later on and are off completely, ntpd may lose its mind. ntpd has also great difficulties when time sources disagree massively what the time is. ntpd works great if you have multiple time-sources that are almost always available and where only quality of connection is managed by ntpd. The more spurious your connection becomes, and especially the more bad time source data quality is, the more problematic is its behavious -- and analysing "why for heaven's sake" the time got wrong this time is a herculean task that I wouldn't want to do for an embedded system that is literally off-roads. In the case of Roger, there is the additional problem that ntpd uses inherently a polling model for its time sources, with staggering polling intervals that shall spare the time servers from overload. AFAIU, Roger needs the complete opposite, a triggering model that takes into account each available PPS signal. Since I don't know chrony, I don't know if it delivers that -- but if it does so, if it is robust, and if the code looks good, I would go with chrony in the use case that Roger describes. In 11.0, when a package was installed via Software Management, it remained open prompting for another package to open. However, with 11.4, Software Management closes immediately, requiring it to be restarted, scanning and all, before another package can be installed. This is an irritating waste of time, when installing multiple packages. I am running openSuSE 11.4 on an x64 machine, and when it was installed, it installed the x64 version of the openJDK 1.6 Java by default. But when I tried to install Eclipse and the Apache-James server source for debugging purposes, I found that I could not run Eclipse using the x64 openJDK. SO I uninstalled it and installed the i586 (32 bit version) of Java 1.6 from Sun. That resulted in a number of broken links in places like /etc/alternatives, /usr/lib/jvm.... Also the java files and links were not removed from /usr/lib64/jvm resulting in java environment variables such as JAVA_HOME etc being incorrectly set to point to x64 java packages (because of the mere existence of these files and links remaining in the lib64 directory). In other words, this resulted in a real mess and it has taken me quite a bit of time and effort to track down and fix. (which scares me because if an update for Java comes along, what is going to happen to all my changes...) My question is this, is running (or downgrading to) a 32 bit version of Java on a 64 bit machine not supported in openSuSE? Should I be complaining about it here (perhaps submit a bug report) or should I go to Eclipse and complain about not being able to run Eclipse under an x64 bit architecture? (Don't ask me what all broke, I spent a number of hours tracking things down and have no idea what all the changes I made were... and a few things are not well documented either so I had to make a few guesses...) In experimenting with lightweight desktops, LXDE and XFCE4, I have managed to mess up my basic windows settings for everything including KDE4. In particular I've lost the title bars and with the ability to drag windows, resize them and so on. I have also messed up a lot of the basic desktop. I thought this was another one of those compiz problems, the one where you wipe compizrc and restart, but it seems not. Hello: I tried to install yesterday openSUSE 11.4 from install DVD (downloaded from download.opensuse.org) Unfortunately a known bug hit me when I wanted to configure DSL connection: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=668586 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678396 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=679112 In short, when one wants to configure DSL in YaST2 a window comes up and says: "These packages need to be installed: linux-atm-lib" If you click ok/install an error message pops up: "The required packages are not installed. The configuration will be aborted. Try again?" If you click No, the configuration is canceled, if you click yes, the loop starts again. In https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=668586 comment 21 says: "Update released for: yast2-network, yast2-network-devel-doc Products: openSUSE 11.4 (i586, x86_64)" For me this implies that the issue is solved in the updated yast2-network package. Nope. I pulled down the required package and installed it manually. Now YaST2 instead of linux-atm-lib asks for libatm1 which is not on the DVD either, and configurator loops as before. Did I do something wrong or openSUSE? How can I fix this by not installing packages from other versions (11.2 or 11.3 eg)? In my opinion it is strange already that after a fresh DVD install a simple DSL connection can not be configured. This worked in every suse version I tried so far. [opensuse] 11.4, cups and linux to linux printer sharing

On my main box, I always try to keep up with the versions. However, this time, after upgrading to 11.4, my cups, Linux to Linux, printer sharing broke. Applied the same parms and setting as 11.3 - firewall, etc. On my wife's box, the printers can be seen but there is some sort of error about not being able to get to the printer queue. Sadly, so far, in the end, had to roll back to 11.3, for now. Will testing this in VirtualBox work ? openSUSE 11.4 / kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop / Gnome 2.32.1 I have been using SDHC flash cards for data backups, reformatting them as ext4 with LUX encryption. This has worked very nicely with a mixture of cards from various manufacturers, but now I've come across a problem one. The card is a SanDisk 16gb SDHC 'standard version' (their words) that refuses to format as anything other than FAT. It seemed to format OK, but when mounting it fails (with the all too familiar log message of 'JBD: no valid journal superblock found' and 'EXT4-fs (dm-1): error loading journal'). I messed around with it for a while, using both the Yast2 formatter utility (from 11.4) and the Gnome gui utility (Disk Utility 2.32.0), but no joy. Hi, I did a zypper dup on my computer the other day and as best I can remember the following were updated: kernel-default kernel-default-devel kernel-devel kernel-source kernel-kmp kernel-firmware Now, the cooling fan on my laptop doesn't work at any temperature. I had been running the latest kernel-3.0 rc from kernel head, now I am back to a 2.6.37 kernel after the update. I have looked in the Kernel:Head repository and don't find the previous release candidate kernel rpms available anymore, it seems they have been erased. I have two machines, both v11.4, one of them newly installed, both with Firefox 4.0b12. YaST Software Manager says that FF v5.0 is available. Trying to download the newer release causes the Software Manager window to collapse at once, leaving no remark about why it is doing this. Downloading Thunderbird, on the other hand, goes without a hitch. 32b OpenSuSE 11.3, Gnome 2.30 When Gnome is started, it places all previously open windows in the correctly remembered positions on each desktop and just before it's finished starting up, *ALL* the windows fall into the northwest corner of desktop 1. Even if this is acceptable, default behaviour, it is unwanted, undesirable. Is there a way to persuade Gnome to keep all windows where they were placed and not drop them all in the corner? I don't see any config setting that would work, Anyone have a magic spell, curse or threat that does? [opensuse] New v11.4 installation -- odd behaviors

Because my venerable Pentium 4 motherboard died yesterday, I have a new MB (i5 CPU on an Intel HD67BL board) and have installed 64bit v11.4 on it. I am non-plussed by some of the behaviors I observe. I hope someone can help me understand them. 1) But immediately upon booting the installation DVD yesterday, and again when I started up the installed system todday, I was asked to choose a display mode. I was offered a small group of options to pick be entering the number. The one I wanted was listed as: f 35A 1600x1200x32...(I would have chosen 60Hz if it were offered) I tried enterring "f", "35A", and "f 35A", and was rewarded each time with an error message telling me that the entry was not a valid mode. Permitting the system to make up its own mind, the boot proceeded, and I went to Systems Settings to see what it had chosen. It is 1024x768 at 60Hz (no better resolution is offered). Even the ancient Pentium 5 was able to give me the higher resolution, and at the 60Hz refress rate. My conclusion is that there is an setting I must change, but I see nothing suggestive in the BIOS, so I may be overlooking something. Hello We have always used SCSI disks in our data collection systems. The data collection can be quite a bit at a time. 1 MB per second is not unusual. And this is sustained for, perhaps, hours at a time. We originally chose SCSI when the option was IDE. It was a no-brainer. Over time, SATA disks have made great progress. For example, this disk from Western Digital: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/wd6000hlhx-velociraptor-600gb,review-31853-3.… My question is, does anyone have any experience with these disks when writing sustained amounts of data? I am guessing there is some interaction between the disk, the controller, and the Linux device driver in terms of features available. I have a game CD, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, that is acting up. It will install but it complains about reading the CD to play the game. It says to put in the "real" CD not a backup. What can copy this - blasted - thing ? Tried k9copy and from the get go, it says "can't read the CD". I do not understand the following behaviors in a newly installed v11.4 system. 1) In System Settings > Common Appearance > Account Settings > Password and User > User Information, I am asked to enter my name, email address, and SMTP server. After doing so, the following error appeares: "An error has occurred, and your name has probably not been changed.The error was chfn." II had enterred the very same neam I had written in the installation process, with no changes. I have no clue what "chfn" should tell me. What does it want to see in the name field (if that is really what is bothering it)? 2) I want to use the Lancelot launcher. I unlocked widgets and clicked on "Add widgets", then found the Lancelot widget. Stan, on your problem #1: what video card are you using? I have had this behaviour on machines where the kernel does not recognise the video card (e.g. Nvidia) correctly and then switches to the vesa/fb driver, offering nothing better than 1024*768. Installing the proper video driver would fix that issue. Mode f 35A sounds weird. The VESA mode for 1600/1200/32 is 322, which is equivalent to Linux's video mode number 834. Have to tried passing the command "vga=834" to the kernel command line upon boot? Unfortunately this may not work even if the kernel does control your video card correctly as this mode is not strictly standardised, and it will not work (i.e. ignored) if the kernel does not recognise your card. Anyway, I would give it a try, and check the kernel's logging output. [opensuse] Java plugin has disappeared from Firefox v4.01

Yesterday I discovered that I am unable to operate the Java applet on my website; trying to find why this is so, I found that about:plugins displays no Java plugins. This is a 64bit system, so the plugin, before it vanished quietly, was icedtea. openSuSE is v11.3. A search for "icedtea" in YaST shows me that icedtea-web v1.1-0.2.1 is installed. Not installed is the file java-1_6_0-openjdk-plugin v1.6.0.0_b20.1.9.7-1.2.1. I guessed that I need to icedtea-web with the java plugin, but was told that I would have to remove icedtea-web. I see on the web that the icedtea-web package is said to already contain the java plugin, so now I am confused. [opensuse] "Samsung_Laptop" module not working on Samsung X360 machine‏‏‏

Hello, as many recent Samsung Laptop models my box (X360 subnotebook featuring C2D SU9300 and Intel X4500 graphics) does not support setting the brightness of the backlight via ACPI; rather it requires a Samsung-specific "SABI" driver. Supposedly this is provided for the X360 by SAMSUNG_LAPTOP as of kernel 2.6.39. The driver should make the function keys of the machine work under Linux (especially the brightness and WLAN keys). Some Fn-keys work prior to 2.6.39, such as the volume and sleep keys. Unfortunately, using an opensuse 11.4/kde fresh install and upgrading to 2.6.39.3-1-desktop via tumbleweed, I get very erroneous behaviour once the above module is loaded, as follows: - pressing the "brightness-up" key does nothing - pressing the "brightness-down" key once switches the display to maximum brightness, after which no other brightness changes occur when pressing the "down"-key - every time one presses the "brightness-down" key, the display flickers briefly, and X takes about 40% CPU for a minute or so, and then reverts to its usual <10% value - unloading the module will immediately reduce X's CPU load to normal Pressing the brightness keys with the module loaded does not bring up KDE's brightness applet; pressing the keys without the module does bring up the applet, which then shows the brightness going up and down but the actual brightness of the screen remains unaffected. When the module is loaded, the system log shows that a X360 laptop is correctly discovered. Other than this, nothing is in the log, and nothing is echoed to the console or the system log when modprobing the module. The files in sysfs appear to be correctly created; however, there is also a "acpi-backlight" class in addition to the "samsung" class that is managed by the module/driver. In either case, writing directly into the sysfs files has no effect whatsoever. For completeness sake: the WLAN key also does not work regardless of loading or unloading the module. I did quite some googling about the issue but to no avail. Am I the only one having this problem? Sorry for the long mail, but I hope I provided a complete and useful description of the issue; will happily provide more info but if things get complicated I will need step-by-step instructions. [opensuse] make kdialog passive popups NOT go to system notifications

I get a fair number of notifications in my system through the local message service (what used to be kwrited). In KDE they by default go to the notifications popups. Unfortunately, if the message is long enough, the popup cuts it off and I cannot read it. For a lot of those messages, I want them to appear somewhere so that I want to read it, but I don't want them to interrupt (i.e., don't want to have to click buttons when they show up). My solution to that in OpenSuse 11.3 was on notification to run a command kdialog --passivepopup %s 300 This displayed messages in popup windows somewhere on screen, and that was exactly what I needed. Now I upgraded to OpenSuse 11.4, and got an unpleasant surprise: "kdialog --passivepopup" now shows up as a message in system notifications, and I cannot see its complete text. I've got a brand new 11.4+updates install on a Lenovo Thinkpad that previously ran openSUSE 11.2. In the new installation, Firefox will frequently hang up the entire system for minutes at a time. All I need to do is go visit e.g. http://www.20min.ch/ and the machine will hang up. The mouse is locked, the clock stops, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace is ignored, Ctrl-Alt-F1 ditto. Hi Listmates, There are some disks in my system which I very seldom use. I want these after the boot in sleep mode,they are a little bit noisy. Now I do this by hand with the command "hdparm -Y /dev/xxx". I want put this command somewhere at the end of the bootsequence. Where and how should I do this ? Hello, I want to install Suse 11.4 on a Laptop (HP-G62) with Windows 7 on it (no previous Linux). I created three partitions for / (ext4, 20GB), /home (ext4, 100GB) and swap (4GB). Now at the end of the installation process, either when installing grub into MBR or the other possibility (forget what it was called, but there are two possibilities), I get the following error message: ------------- GNU GRUB version 0.97 (640K lower / 3072 upper memory) [ ... ] grub> setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 --force-lba (hd0) (hd0,4) Error 22: No such partition grub> quit ------------- I didn't find something relevant in the Internet on that. The source addressbook is in a large Vcard v3.0 file. I have installed the MoreVunctions addon in Thunderbird. Using the Import function, I inform it that this is a .vcf file and let 'er rip. The error message that appears immediately says: "An error occurred importing addressees from vCard file (.vcf)", with no diagnostic information. The resulting imported address book consistes of only part of the first card in the source file: only the line "Email: <correct address>"; the source card includes the name of the contact, but that is absent in the target. When I delete the first entry in the source and try to import the resulting file, the same error message appears, but nothing at all makes it to the target. I do not see anything obvious wrong with these entries. New laptop, new 11.4 installation (dual boot with Windows 7) with switchable graphics: on the motherboard, IntelVGA compatible controller (2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller). This is what is in use with no problem since the installation. There is also nVidia GeForce GT 555M card. The hardware switch works in Windows, but has no effect in linux. I think my son (whose computer it is) will use the nVidia most of the time, but might like to know how to switch. In any case, I would appreciate any help in knowing how to use the nVidia in place of the motherboard graphics. Thanks! The system is desktop v11.3, KDE v4.4 Because of the behavior, I do not see how I could approach diagnosis, even if I had a clue what to do. Sometime, wiggling the mouse cursor a bit makes the mouse responsive for a few seconds. When that doesn't work, sometimes letting it sit for a half hour or so frees it. For some reason I cannot connect to my personal mail server via my android phone (Atrix). however, if I use K9, I don't seem to have a problem. Settings are the same. Does any one know if there is a reason for this? Latest available (7 months old) proprietary Canon PPD my printer requires, and preceeding versions, work in F14 and oS 11.3, but not in F15 or oS 11.4, apparently due to something changed in CUPS. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=683476 I don't "upgrade" to odd numbered releases, and even if this was not the case, I wouldn't "upgrade" to 11.3 anyway due to its immature KMS system and other flaws encountered running it on test systems. 11.2, notwithstanding Tumbleweed, currently installed, is out of support. Sound worked fine in 11.0, but not in 11.2, so I'm not keen on keeping 11.2 any longer than I must. I'd like to move to 11.4 in hopes of restoring sound as soon as the https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=675793 fix is actually available. So, I see three options for moving to 11.4: 1-install 11.3, lock CUPS packages, upgrade to 11.4, or 2-install 11.3's CUPS packages in 11.2, lock them, upgrade to 11.4, or 3-install 11.4, excluding CUPS and its deps, install CUPS packages from 11.3 repos, or 4-upgrade 11.2 to 11.3, lock CUPS, upgrade to 11.4 Do any seem viable? If all, which stands best chance of success? I really don't like the idea of the upgrade route, for fear of sound not getting fixed. Changing printers is not an option. It seems that there are a few stallwarts out there, yours truly one of us, who still use suse 11.3, 11.2, 11.1 and even 10.x as the main os. Most of these os's are out of maintenance, so a kernel upgrade would have to be manual. Hello: Adobe reader pretty frequently litters my screen with non-removable and unmovable image parts. These image parts are either small previews of opened pdf documents or titles/file names of opened pdfs'. They only disappear when I close adobe reader. An example can be seen here: http://i52.tinypic.com/10nt4x5.jpg Does anyone else see these? How could I get rid of them? I have openSUSE 11.2, KDE 3.5.10, adobe-reader 9.3.2 (openSUSE rpm). Hi all, I seem to have some problems with openSUSE 11.4 and graphics cards. Mine are relatively old nVidia (GeForce GT 220) and ATI's (Radeon X550/ RV370/SapphireX550 Silent). The nVidia card is suspect, I think an onboard memory problem. It freezes up irregularly. I want to replace it. With "ATI Proprietary Linux Driver-8.593" I get: ./ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run Created directory fglrx-install.YylA7t Verifying archive integrity... All good. ...... ..... which: "no XFree86 in <path>, ... Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version default:v2:x86_64:lib::none:2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop; make sure that the version is being correctly set by --iscurrentdistro Strangely, in failsafe the glxgears run well with about 380 FPS. Well, I'm fed up with these cards. [opensuse] Simple Network Booting Solution?

I already know how PXE works, etc. That's not an issue. The issue is I want to network boot openSUSE. Not an installer. I've read all the KIWI-LTSP stuff on the wiki but there aren't clear instructions and seems outdated (the documentation at least). All I was able to determine is in SUSE Studio website PXE images are disabled, but "SUSE Studio Onsite" is a paid (how many thousands? 50 thousand?) system that can build PXE booting images. That's basically all I need, build an image with a GUI and boot it over PXE. Even if I could boot the LiveCD over PXE, that would be fine. Is there a way to convert some image I build in SUSE studio to PXE image? What is even the difference? Just the proper support in initrd? Anyone have working recent instructions on how to accomplish this? That the preview for an office file is just a char dump must be a bug though, but am I wrong in thinking this whole thing is somewhat incomplete? More questions: How do I enable strigi for all users (of a machine)? I ran an upgrade of my sons desktop machine over the weekend, and it has now lost sound completely. Via YaST, I've deleted and reconfigured the soundcard, but this had no (apparent) effect. The card is currently detected as "d330 uT' with driver snd-intel8x0 - I'm afraid I don't know if that was also the previous config. AFAIR, the kmix application used to show several miscellaneous sliders, but they seem to have gone too. (replaced by 3-4 tabs with streams). Any suggestions on how to get sound back? All, Whether intended or not, one area where I have noticed great progress in 11.4 is package currency. For the past decade, after the initial release, SuSE/openSUSE always languished several versions behind other distros with regard to package versions available as either updates or through build service. Arch, the first rolling release I tried, absolutely blew me away with current packages where new packages were often available before the upstream public release of a version bump. Tumbleweed appears to have forced a similar currency in openSUSE which is a great benefit to the community. Now whether updating through zypper on openSUSE or pacman on Arch, a majority of the updates are to the upstream version. Excellent job! -- David C. Is it possible to change the taskbar from translucent to opaque? Translucent, with those washed out icons looks terrible. Stronger colours for those icons would also be nice. Also, what happened to the < & > buttons at the end of the task bar that are used to collapse it when desired. Dear my friends.... I have a new CDMA EVDO Rev.A USB Modem ZTE AC682. I can not use it with my NetworkManager. My wvdialconf can not detect it. [opensuse] WiFi passwords and KWallet

I recently installed 11.4 on a ThinkPad T43. One thing I find very annoying is that I cannot save the WiFi password, without using KWallet. This means I have to give the KWallet password, whenever I connect via WiFi. [opensuse] where to order the stuffed animal version of the opensuse mascot?

Hi! I have to warn out since this is a highly technical question :) but I would like to purchase a copy of the opensuse mascot (as stuffed animal). Could not found it at the official fan shop and I was mainly interested in a purely opensuse branded version. I remember I saw a picture once from some opensuse conference showing a cute copy. Any recommendation where I could buy a nice one? Thanks a lot! [opensuse] Thunderbird calendar ("Lightening" v1,0b4)

This, although a beta, is the current release of "Lightening", and is described by Mozilla as "stable". In the Preferences screen, I have succeeded in defining which days are workdays, and also set a new category of Task. I've defined the details of a new task, and clicked on the button "Save and Close". The window does close, but the new task does not appear anywhere, so it isn't saved. The Preferences offer the choice of long or short date format; I chose the long, but today is 7/3/2011. For everything else on the system, it is 3/7/2011, so this is confusing. Everything else on the system also knows about 24-hour time formats; Lightening knows about them only when it comes to choosing times, but the result of choosing 1640 becomes 4:40pm. The Preferences window does know <dd mm yyyy>, and never mentions time formats, implying that Lightening will use the system default, which it doesn't. I don't think it is surprising for a beta to be in this condition. The surprise is the hubris of grownups to argue that it is stable. [opensuse] Thunderbird and HTML

There is a class of HTML-containing incoming messages that I need to save as HTML. I access these later with Firefox. Now I am using the Thunderbird mail client. In Kmail, I could use the message-structure feature to save the HTML version of such messages. Thunderbird seems to lack the ability to display in a format called EML. I do not see a way to get the mailer to display or save the HTML part of a message, and hope that I am overlooking something. [opensuse] Two versions of openSUSE, but the second won't boot up...

Hi all, I got a new 40 GB hdd the other day so that I could install openSUSE 10.3 on it to use as my 'game' drive (I have a Crossover thing that just doesn't work well with 11.3, unfortunately) What I did, was I unplugged the 11.3 hdd from the MOBO, installed the new hdd, plugged it in *on the SATA 3 plug (there's 4, 11.3 is on 1, the CD/DVD writer is on 2 and now 10.3 on 3) and turned the system on and installed 10.3 on it. Then, I plugged my 11.3 back in and started up the system and got into 11.3 to put the new hdd in my GRUB. I've chosen almost all the choices that GRUB had (using YaST) to put the new hdd/10.3 in the bootup selection menu (where I now have the penguins permanently walking back and forth, on purpose btw). Nothing I've chosen works. When I get to the menu where I can select what to do (11.3, 10.3, 11.3 failsafe, floppy), if I choose 10.3 it starts the GRUB for it and then brings me right back to the choice menu again. Is there something I'm missing? Should I install 10.3 again but leave my 11.3 plugged in and start up with the 10.3 in the cd/dvd writer and try it that way and hope that install doesn't screw up enough that I can no longer get in 11.3?
