[opensuse] virtualbox in 11.4 with kde3
ok, been playing w. 11.4, but i have installed kde-3:) .(just some personal issues with widgets and plasmoids, please don't attack:)) the only problem so far is virtual box, it fails to start. rerunning setup does reconfigure it, still it fails to open an x window. any pointers? thanks, d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Start it from a terminal window. It may spit out warning/error messages that you don't see when started in X. HTH, Jeffrey -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
In Secession Type I want to edit the menu to select and use kde3 not kde4. I looked into Trinity but only found other distros and source code? yet there are kde3 repositories so some form of the better window manager is available officially. How do I correct this? Do I have to destroy kde4 to force the systems hand? CWSIV -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Did you add the repo http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.4/ There is no pattern for kde IIRC so you have to manually add the kde3 system packages It's the same situation in 12.1 too It's kind of limited too, as kde3 is so depreciated now -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

you might get a good answer here eventually, but i'd guess a higher chance and faster response on the KDE3 mail list: opensuse-kde3@opensuse.org that project and list is homed at: http://en.opensuse.org/KDE3 dd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have 11.4 (32-bit)+kde3 and virtual box 4.0 from Oracle Repository. Works fine for me. I've installed kde4 first, then added kde3, so kde4 sits there as well, but I do not believe it makes any difference. I think I had initially a problems with opensuse version of virtual box. -- Mark Goldstein having kde4 fully installed might be the difference. my system has *no* kde4 at all. i started with xfce, then added the kde3 repo. and i have taboo-ed out libstrigi and kdm, basically killing any attempt to "upgrade" the system to kde4.
the two vbox versions i tried are the 4.0 from suse, then 4.1 from oracle. i did try the console start, that's how i did the /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup and the system was recompiled. and that's where i saw the error that vbox can not open an x window. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So you ran vboxdrv setup as root and it compiled successfully. Then you tried virtual box from terminal window as normal user? On my box it starts correctly. Is your user a member of vboxusers group? Hard to believe virtualbox has dependencies on kde4. I ran the same virtualbox version on 11.1 with kde3 (though in 11.1 some kde4 libraries were also installed). Should be something different.
