[opensuse] boot32.efi for 64 bits processor and Leap

Hello, We see more and more often very small but powerfull computers, atom multicore 64 bits, but with UEFI 32 bits firmware. I have one now ("It Works TW891" paid 129€ - 32Gb ssd + 2Gb ram, runs almost perfectly windows 10 32bits or Debian 64bits). these computers can be installed with 64 bits distros, but they need absolutely a 32 bits loader. Right now I on ly know of the hybrid debian 32/64bits dvd to be able to install. Notice that *only the loader* have to be 32bits, the generic name being boot32.efi copying a generic loader to the Leap EFI folder allows booting, and probably installing (I couldn't make all the tests), but the generic one gives only a grub prompt, not handy. Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. I usually take the newest openSUSE kernel (from repository Kernel_stable). But since some month I have a DVB T2 HD card, which requires a patch (see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194171) So I need to compile kernels myself. I have a working compilation path. But the current path has 12 steps! It takes some time. I wonder, why it is so complicated to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE. Is there a better/easier/automated way to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE? I know this blog article. But the article uses Vanilla kernels and also needs 6 steps. With additional patches (4 steps), third-party modules (2 steps) and cleanup (1 step) the article would also need 13 steps: Compiling the Linux Kernel, the SUSE way https://www.suse.com/communities/blog/compiling-de-linux-kernel-suse-way/ This is my Kernel configuration, compilation and installation path: 1. [opensuse] Raid, Raid6, what file system for good fault tolerance?

Hi list, speaking about software raid, not hardware controller based. I am trying to go for some local OpenSuse machine and adding some storage to it. Was considering Raid6, and now reading about a bit and people left and right scaremongering about the larger the disks these days in the double digit terabyte capacities even, the more likely it is that during a reconstruction of a raid subsequent errors would occur. I would absolutely like to keep my data consistent, and I am not thinking about double digit terabytes either, would stick to 2TB or 4TB disks, with Raid6 thats at least 4 physical drives. Now I am wondering if it possible to use a good robust file system that can add some more parity or check blocks or redundancy on top of the hardware disks, to absolutely be able to always read my data. I can't add multiple machines or like those high availability stuff like clusters and what not I read about DRBD (Distributed Replicated Block Device), or maybe I am just too scared by those technical terms or consider myself to be just a simpleton and wanting to keep it rather simple. My use case here is also not constant availablity, when a disk needs to be replaced, so be it, but I don't want to lose my data that I can not ever read certain parts of it again or such stuff. The thing that came to my mind was, if there is some file systems that would add redundancy and robustness onto the mdraid system of the linux kernel? Anyone with some useful insights? Roughly speaking, I was considering some simple pcie esata interfaced controller card and an external case enclosure with esata port and portmulitplier stuff inside, that can present at least 4 physical disks as JBOD, just a bunch of disks, so that the Linux can seem them all separately. Speed and rebuild times are not my concern, but data persistence and data integrity. Not even number of physical disks, I could live with even one of those 8 bay device enclosures and cases that are out there on the market. [opensuse] Spec'ing a 50 TB dedicated storage subsystem and room to grow?

All, I bought a used iSCSI based Drobo in 2016 with 50TB in it. It works great, but it isn't fast by today's standards. (100 MB/sec absolute max). And I never got it to work from openSUSE (Windows and Mac did work). I now need to buy something similar, but with fast I/O and Linux support: 10 Gbit Ethernet and fibre-channel may be my only options? Or are there point-to-point SAS external racks I should consider? Also, I will likely want to put a SSD based cache in the mix at some point. It could be integrated into the storage subsystem, or I could use something like bcache and have the SSD be in the server,. It just needs to be reliable and fast. Recommendations? (I'm thinking used and $10K at the high-end for the subsystem including PCIx cards and switches, if needed.) == details I need to buy a server with 50TB usable disk for a production environment. A high speed disk subsystem is critical. And the project may scale up over time. It doesn't need to be a fail-over cluster, just a single server. I'm looking at used equipment most likely. I was thinking one with 4 CPU sockets would let me start with 2 CPUs and then expand to 4 later on. Lots of RAM capacity would also be great. I only see 2TB drives max. I'm hoping to use a Dell server because it's the preferred brand at my (new) job. Unless I'm missing something a standalone rack mount Dell won't work. I picked it because it is only a 5-year old design and it has 4 CPU sockets I can expand into as the server demand increases over time. [opensuse] MSI GE63 7RD : No openSUSE Leap 15?

Finally after a long search my selection for new laptop is the MSI GE63 7RD. Several internet tests were quite positive and -most important- it is very silent. Also the Ubuntu community said that these MSI laptops are quite "standard" stuff, only few tweaks, Optimus seems to be one thing to tweak. But: after having bought this machine I have to realize that openSUSE Leap 15 does not seem to be ready for this laptop (although amazon.de lists this machine since July 3rd 2017). There is a bunch of error messages when booting it up from USB after setting Secure boot to off and fast boot also. The worst one seems to be "NMI watchdog : BUG soft lockup CPU4 stuck for 22s!" afterwards SuSE15 seems to be stuck and I have to turn off by switch. I also tried tumbleweed on a USB stick - same error. Actually I was able to install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with a tweak of bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi under Windows 10 because otherwise the grub boot manager is not shown. Everything else seems to work after doing that tweak with nVidia which is described in internet all over. Does this mean I have to say goodbye to SuSE on my Laptop? Old HP computer so possible hardware issues. I had issues during the dup to 20180628 and need to use the rescue system to repair grub. I cannot find an email I had with steps including 'bind -o' in them so if some kind soul could sent the procedure I would appreciate it. I've already repaired the filesystem but need to repair grub as well. I followed an opensuse advert for selling data storage for body-cams to police. It went through some redirects on google, then went to www.suse.com, where I prompt got some weird error I can't reproduce because google is serving up a different advert, and I don't know the URL because google encrypts the SSL stream (recently upgraded my squid and have yet to pop in a new local cert to decode it). This is a perfect reason why I hate needless encrypting of webpages -- as now I can't even find the URL I was on let alone reproduce the problem from it. However, I get a different but similar error if I try to goto the website directly. The connection was interrupted The connection to www.suse.com was interrupted while the page was loading. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. This new encryption (if that's what it is and if it was done right) seems to be only present on opensuse systems at this point (maybe more will pop up later). But the part I find to be the most strange is that the sites that the ad was on, had no problem, I have no problems any google site (youtube, plus, etc). Just suse.com and opensuse.org. I don't have the problem on download.opensuse.org (which defaults to http for me), nor the https version used on that site. So why is opensuse causing problems for some browsers, but no one else seems to be (including download site)? Hello, my trustful laptop had it's final shutdown after 11 years. There are currently 2 choices for my usage (watching videos, doing 3D printing, usenet, dual ethernet). Dell Inspiron 7577 ( 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 16GB) Acer Aspire VX5 ( 512GB SSD + 1.000GB, 16GB) All of them are missing a DVD Writer (or even BluRay player). So which combination of USB (3.0?) Bluray player/DVD writer can I use with the above laptops to install SuSE 42.3 from DVD beside that Windows 10 (dual boot)? Also I need a 2nd Ethernet. I was using PCAMCIA/Cardbus up to now which worked fine, now I have to dump this working hardware also. :-/ Which USB-Ethernet dongles do you suggest? Is there any other better combination? Hi, I've bought an HP 15 laptop where neither blue tooth or wifi works under both 42.3 and Leap 15.0. Of course it works perfectly under windows 10. I googled and found that Larry Finger maintains a git hub repository of such drivers and I checked out rtlwifi_new which has my RTL8723DE driver src but it fails to build most probably due to the Leap:15.0 kernel being altered. I just went to YaST Online Update and see a bunch of updates available. When I click on Accept, a box pops up advising me that an update to mozilla-nss has also been changed to resolve dependencies. I have 3.36.1-47.1 and it wants to install 3.36.4-50.1. What I can't find is how to see what dependency would be broken, or why this update is only listed as an 'automatic' one and not in the list of available updates, so I can't see what problems it is supposed to fix. Dear All, Can someone explain why there is such a difference in UID's as well as GUID's between leap 15 and Tumbleweed? I use multiple OSen, but all use the same data disks for none OS bounded data. For instance, I use one common data directory for use of Qemu with the group KVM. But under leap KVM is group 488 and under Tumbleweed 478, which makes it impossible to use the data sets without changing the GUID every time. This is just one example, there are many more. Hello List, having recently upgraded by 42.3 machine to Leap 15, I've noticed my cups client does not talk to the (ancient) server anymore. When I look at other machines, cups seems to have changed from 1.7.5 to 2.2.7, so maybe something changed so drastically that compatibility is impaired? My cups knowledge is sketchy, so I do not really know how to debug this problem. Any hints? [opensuse] Attempting to boot Windows 10 from an external disk

Hi, I got a small Lenovo Yoga 300-11IBR laptop, that came with Windows 10 installed on a rotating rust 500GB hard disk. After two days of playing with it, I removed the original internal hard disk and replaced it with a 250 GB SSD and installed openSUSE 15.0 on it, which is working fine. The original hard disk I placed on an USB 3 enclosure for extra storage, and possibly to boot Windows if needed. Alas, W10 does not boot. It tries to, I see the rotating dots patterns characteristic of Windows, then it stops and boots Linux instead. I don't think it is a license issue, it would say so. It is not that important to boot Windows, but as I have it, it would be nice to have double boot. There is one setting that I apparently can only adjust on Windows, the battery charge limit. Ideas? A script that has worked for many generations of openSuSE fails under the LEAP 15 installation. The script ('ted') is located under /usr/local/bin. The command 'dir /usr/local/ED-159/edc' yields -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 214104 Sep 10 2006 /usr/local/ED-159/edc The directory chain and permissions are as they need to be. I have tried numerous variations and tests, but must be missing the one that will work. Yes, the code and script are pretty ancient. Was there some peculiar change to the shell (bash) code? Hi all, I am just interested whether those on oS also met the problem in the subject. After about 2 weeks I switched on my ASUS K 501U laptop with TW and saw there were a massive number (nearly 3000!!) updates. It was not smooth to install them because in the meantime root got full. I deleted the elder snaphots (sudo snapper delete ---sync #snapshot) and installed the remaining more than 300 updates. Finally I tried to reboot, but neither touchpad nor keybord works on the 17.2 kernel. I could log in with the virtual keyboard and the mouse. Now I booted with 16.2 kernel which just works fine. So anybody met this, and has a remedy? Thanks, Albert

[opensuse] Enabling an external display on a laptop that shows disconnected.

I am trying to discover how to enable an external monitor that I plug into my laptop. I am trying both 42.3 and 15. When I execute the xrandr command by itself is shows HDMI-2 disconnected. My laptop screen sometimes comes up as LVDS-1 unknown connection, where it certainly knew the connection when I started the system (should be connected primary) I have tried various xrandr commands advertised to work, the simplest being sudo xrandr --auto. After many hours on google I always find the xrandr --auto solution. The Opensuse system settings widget only shows one display and no options to probe for others. If I boot the system with the display attached it comes up correctly, so the monitor and cabling are good. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Hello, on Leap 15.0 I have the problem, that many systemd-services fail on boot, or won't work correct, as network is not up and/or name resolution doesn't work. see below... systemd thinks the system was network up ( Reached target Host and Network Name Lookups. / Reached target Network.). All, I you use Linux guests in virtualbox (especially if you access them via rdesktop after starting the host --headless), there are two bugs you should be aware of before updating the guest to the 4.17 kernel: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/59091 and https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/17827 Both are regarding the same bug, one with Arch and the other with Oracle. You essentially lose the left-mouse button input (rather important if you are running a desktop within the guest) The Host kernel makes no difference, it is the guest update that will cause the problems. -- David C. [opensuse] Can't make Libre Office Base work

Hi, I'm trying again LO Base against an existing database in MySQL. Things have improved, but not enough to make it work. First main improvement is that it LO now connects directly without using things like ODBC or JDBC. Wonderful. I can see my database: <http://paste.opensuse.org/64191135> But as you can see in the table view: <http://paste.opensuse.org/77063841> columns such as "author" or "Genre" display the index numbers, not the corresponding names. This is how it displays in Rekall - correctly: <http://paste.opensuse.org/25141180> I look around menus in LOB and I find in tools "Relations". Wonderful! I simply need to define the relationships between the several tables. In less than a minute I define the first one, in the familiar method I used in Windows decades ago and that Rekall also used: <http://paste.opensuse.org/65162073> There is a little problem, it seems to link index to index, while it should be "autor" in the left to "indice" in the right. I fiddle a bit and try to edit the relationship: <http://paste.opensuse.org/35000587> Sure enough, the relationship is not correct. I change it. <http://paste.opensuse.org/75355788> BUT! The OK button does nothing. I have to press cancel to exit. The line connecting the tables disappear: <http://paste.opensuse.org/58564267> And trying to connect them again fails. No error, simply ignores me. I can click on Relationships again, and the box is empty. How is this supposed to work? Is Libre Office Base finished? I have been waiting for this feature in Linux since 1998, when I used it in Windows Office and worked instantly. Rekall in KDE3 did it fine, but Rekall is no longer provided in openSUSE. In fact, in order to take the photos for this post and show the line connecting the relationship I have to exit LO and delete the created file. How do I access a certificate on firefox? (FF52.8 on Leap 42.3) I'm trying to open my electricity supplier's website and FF says energyco.co.uk uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for the following names: *.azurewebsites.net, *.scm.azurewebsites.net, *.azure-mobile.net, *.scm.azure-mobile.net, *.sso.azurewebsites.net Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN but I can't find out how to actually inspect the certificate to see what FF is complaining about. chromium by contrast opens the website and shows me a certificate that looks sensible. But what surprises me more is "/dev/sda4". I thought that method was deprecated, and we should use UUIDs instead. In my main computer, disk /dev/sda changes from boot to boot depending on what external disks I have connected, or none. Thus the rest, sdb, sdc... shift. If I go to the opensuse site: download.opensuse.org/source/distribution/leap/15.0-Current/repo/oss/src/ and try to download files I receive many with a .mirrorlist extension. Examination of those files indicates that there are mirrors that do contain the source code. Is there some other list of mirrors that I should refer to? There are also links in this tree to: openSUSE_Leap_15.0/ 15.0-Current/ openSUSE-current/ I do not know what the difference in these are. I had assumed that Leap 15.0 was current, so is 15.0-Current more current and include updates? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I just installed Leap 15.0 on a new, cheap, and small laptop machine that has a touchpad and touchscreen («Lenovo Yoga 300-11IBR», 11.6"), and the touch screen just works out of the box, both in gnome and Xfce. Ok, pressing buttons in a tiny screen with fingers is not sufficiently precise, but moving a page in firefox with the finger turns out to be faster than using the touchpad. Although in xfce or gnome touching and moving the insides of the firefox window selects text, not moves it. I have to touch the sliding bar. Still... I'm gladly surprised :-) Of course, none of the desktops seems optimized for "tablet mode". Windows does have it but I have not tried. It was in Windows where I saw the utility of moving the inside of the firefox window. Maybe that is configurable in Linux? In xfce mouse settings I see two entries: the default one is "ATML 10000:00 003EB:8C3C", whatever that is, and the other is "SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad". [opensuse] Philosophical question?

I have been sub'ed to this forum for many years. I'm not sure which was my first opensuse version (I remember 10-something) but suffice it to say that I have followed the trials and tribulations of the user community here and I wonder what it is about opensuse that really sets it apart from all the other distros out there. I mean, what is its main claim to fame? The answer to that has changed over the years but I wonder what it is now. Maybe someone here can make a compelling case for the use of opensuse instead of any other linux distro. If so, I would like to see it. What use case would cause opensuse to be selected? I suppose in order to answer that, one must be fluent in the various linux dialects. I am not; I barely have enough time to use this opensuse 13.1 and admin the adjacent webserver running ubuntu 16.04lts. As my version is somewhat dated ;-) I will be moving to something better by year's end. Maybe 15.1, maybe something else. I really haven't had time to research, which is why the original question. I leave it running on the night (it is also server for other things full time), so I just power off the display. Well, sometimes when I power back on the display it remains "dark grey", ie, black with backlight on; there is some signal, but it is black. No response to keyboard at all, that I can see. Most times I can not switch to console text mode. I can do ssh from another machine, tasks are running. I kill kodi if it still there, kill the screen saver, "chvt 1", "init 3"... nothing works, the display does not respond. I have no resource but reboot the server. I suspect that Kodi has crashed but not fully exited, not restored the display it grabs (full screen mode). [opensuse] Enigmail setup wizard fatal flaw

In running the Enigmail Setup Wizard, I'm asked to browse for files for it to use. The relevant files are, by default, in ~/.gnupg but the Wizard's file browser doesn't display any directories whose name begins with a period (.), making it impossible to browse to the relevant directory... and so too impossible to accomplish the Setup. I start viewing it, and decide that I want to watch it on my "media server", another openSUSE machine that I use as media server. How can I launch the youtube there? I need to transfer the URL. Sometimes I just type the boring sequence of letters in the youtube search box. I can of course write the URL in a file and copy it over with scp. [opensuse] system-wide wireless in Leap 15.0 with plasma desktop

Hello: I have installed openSUSE Leap 15.0 with plasma desktop for testing. It is a fresh install from install DVD. During installation I haven't configured the network. I would like to configure wireless network now as follows: - The enabled wifi networks which a user can connect to are configured by root and used system-wide. Users can not modify connection settings. (For example a user can connect to the allowed wifi networks only, not to others, even they are available.) Would be better that wifi networks which are not enabled/allowed are even not shown at all. - The users should be able to connect/disconnect to/from the allowed network. This could be done easily in previous openSUSE versions by using yast ifconfig method and kinternet together or configuring wifi connection in networkmanager as root. In Leap 15.0 default plasma I could not find how I can configure wifi as root. If I click the nm-applet in the systray the user can turn on/off wireless, all the available wifi networks are shown in the widget and users can connect to any of them if they enter the wifi password. If I select network setting in nm-applet there is no option (no tab) for adding and configure wireless connection. What is the method to configure wifi connection centrally in Leap 15? I tried to find an answer by google searching but could not find anything relevant. Hello: I tried to open openSUSE mailing lists in an older firefox, 24.8.1 ESR at http://lists.opensuse.org/ which redirects to https://lists.opensuse.org/ and the browser can't open the page, instead give an error message: "The connection was interrupted The connection to lists.opensuse.org was interrupted while the page was loading. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web." I guess the problem might be an authentication/key/certificate error. (Newer seamonkey can open the page). First I don't really get why looking at a mailing list page requires an https connection at all. I can imagine that some want secure connection to the mailing list site but automatic redirection should not occur. Third, many https site just work with this old firefox. https://software.opensuse.org/ doesn't open either. https://www.opensuse.org/ works. This should be fixed. Hello, as my old ASUS Transformer Android tablet is slowly decaying, I'm thinking about its replacement. I'd prefer some "standard" device with x86_64 architecture which could serve as notebook and which would have detachable keyboard to work as tablet for reading etc. I don't wont Android anymore. So far I like Lenovo Miix 320 https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/tablets/windows-tablets/miix-series/-Miix-320… HP X2 210 G2 https://store.hp.com/us/en/mdp/hp-x2-210--1 ASUS Transformer Mini T102HA https://www.asus.com/2-in-1-PCs/ASUS-Transformer-Mini-T102HA/ Acer One 10 https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/series/acerone10 I'd prefer to buy it without Windows (impossible, I'm afraid) and use it only with Linux, preferable with openSUSE TW. Does anyone have some experience with this? Would anyone recommend different comparable device (up to ~450 €)? What are Your experiences with touch screen usability? I prefer KDE (Well, will it run on 4 GB RAM?), but I don't mind some another (I just don't like GNOME). I wonder how convenient is touchscreen on simple tasks like web browsing, reading, etc. More specifically, how do applications like Firefox LO Writer, Okular, etc. work on touchscreen? Does screen rotation work well? Last but not least, I'd prefer certain quality of construction - durability, display quality, etc. I don't wish any plastic crap which would break up easily. I encountered numerous problems with Amarok from SuSE repo: 1) It always throws annoying error: This object could not be created for the following reason: Could not find requested component Which cannot be dismissed in any way. The only meaningful debug message so far is: QWidget::setMinimumSize: (Media Sources dock/BrowserDock) Negative sizes (200,-1) are not possible 2) Which gstreamer plugins required for Amarok in order to play flac? There are gstreamer-plugins 1.12.5 "good", "bad", "ugly" - which ones? I often play music with Amarok. On the task bar, it has an icon for a speaker, as might be expected. However, this icon now appears on Firefox. If I display the list of Firefox windows, each one has the same icon, even on sites that don't have any audio. Is this a new "feature"? [opensuse] Plasma - how to set digital clock plasmoid font size?

All, How can I change the font size of the digital clock plasmoid in the taskbar? Apparently, in the past there was a pointSize parameter in the file: /usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.digitalclock/contents/ui/DigitalClock.qml I have tried changing: font.pixelSize: 1024 to font.pixelSize: 512 hoping to 1/2 the font size, but no joy. I am having troubles with rhythmbox. The application opens, and I can select a track to play. But none of the buttons work. I receive an error message: Unable to grab media player keys: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.Dbus.Error.ServiceUnKnown: The name org.gnome.SettingsDaemon was not provided by any .service files I do not have Gnome installed. [opensuse] dd to copy a partition?

Hi Folks, One of my acolytes reported that she used dd to copy one disk partition to another partition on the same disk, as in: dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sda2 She said it failed, but was a little fuzzy about exactly what happened (I wasn't there), just that the destination partition appeared to be "empty" after the operation. I don't know how she made that determination. I've been doing UNIX stuff for a long time but I never would have thought to use dd in this fashion. Maybe instinct? But assuming that the two partitions are exactly the same size, what could possibly go wrong? I think she was using 42.3, probably with ext4. Definitely not btrfs, if that matters. Hello: This occurs in openSUSE 13.1 with KDE4 Platform Version 4.11.5. I have a disk partition in the fstab file like this: /dev/disk/by-id/ata-......-part8 /mnt/partition8 ext3 noauto,users 1 2 According to this normal users should be able to mount the partition. It works if I mount the partition in konsole by "mount /mnt/partition8". If I try to mount the partition in krusader file manager by right click/mount I get a window with an error message: "Authentication is required to mount ............ (/dev/sda8) An application is attempting to perform an action that requires privileges. Authentication is required to perform this action. Password for root: " In dolphin there is no option to mount the partiton. It seems KDE4 or krusader ignores what is set in fstab and requires root password. Why is this and how to fix? I followed the steps at https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Animated_penguin_GRUB_splash_screen (first it was necessary to install gfxboot which wasn't installed at installation), and verified that /boot/message does indeed show "penguin=100". Clearly, there is something I still need to do that isn't mentioned in that URL, because I still see the default boot screen. [opensuse] 15.0 KDE desktop goes wonkey

One thing I've noticed since upgrading to 15.0 is the KDE desktop goes wonkey (please pardon the technical jargon) where the icon images on the task bar seem to enlarge the image, within the same size icon. Text also gets bigger. Sometimes it also affects the desktop icons. The only way to clear it is to log out. Hi, I failed to upgrade a test partition with Leap 42.3 to 15.0, using the DVD method. First it aborted because it found reiserfs partitions in fstab, even though they were references to quite old openSUSE installs on other partitions. Like 13.1. Obviously I can not change them. This is absurd. I had to comment them out. :-/ I rebooted and tried again, and after it started probing the target partition, yast crashed. I got logs and photos, will write a bugzilla later, time permitting. Hello everyone, Firstly I am cross posting this across a number of mailinglists because this post affects several, but I would ask that you keep your replies / feedback on the openSUSE project list as not to fragment discussion. It has been raised with the board by several members of the community that some of our mailinglists have not been working as effectively as we would like. As such and as raised in our annual discussion with the community during the conference, the board has decided to take a couple of steps that we hope will resolve these issues or that will at least be a starting point in resolving these issues. Firstly we have created a new opensuse-support(a)o.o mailing list, we as the board felt that in the transition from factory -> tumbleweed in particular the change in role for opensuse(a)o.o did not work well and in many cases there was an attitude that factory/tumbleweed issues should still be posted on the factory mailing list. As such we have created the support mailing list to help clarify these changes in policy that we don't believe worked when we tried to change them last time. In short we would like you to use opensuse-support(a)o.o whenever you require support whether it is for Tumbleweed, Leap (regardless of whether you are using a Leap beta or not) or any other project under the openSUSE umbrella. This brings us to the next issue, posting bugs / bug reports on mailing lists rather then bugzilla. This is a practice we would like to see stopped and we will be gently reminding people if they continue posting bugs on mailinglists, this especially includes if a package / application breaks when updating tumbleweed / leap (including beta's). We would ask that you search for your issue prior to reporting but in case you accidentally report a duplicate bug its easy for us to mark it as such, also if you report something that is intentional and not a bug it doesn't take long to mark it as such, so if in doubt file a bug rather then posting to a mailing list, there is useful information for filing bugs at the following links [1][2]. But if you are really stuck with trying to file your bug the friendly people at opensuse-support(a)o.o can support you through the process. The board hopes that with the changes outlined above the contents of the opensuse-factory(a)o.o will go back to just being general distro development discussion so if your post to openSUSE factory is something other then that think twice about where the more appropriate place to post is. The new tumbleweed snapshots will continue to be posted to factory but we would ask you do not reply to them in order to report issues / bugs. If a bug is reported that a package maintainer believes will cause significant issues for most tumbleweed users ie not being able to boot / login or severe data loss we still invite the maintainer to post a warning to opensuse-factory but such issues happen very rarely and as such we don't expect to see many such posts. The board has decided that it would like to see how well these changes work before deciding to add / remove / change openSUSE's mailing lists further. [opensuse] one single problem upgrading Leap 42.3->15.0

Hello, upgrade using zypper runs very smoothly, in all cases (3 so far) I got a perfect working system (after reboot). But: directly after the installation I have hundred(s) of zombie processes. systemd seams to be dead.. there are dozens of error messages during upgrade because of that. shutdown does not work.. In all cases I needed to use magic sysrequest to sync and reboot. Is it a known issue? Or where do I find the errors in logs - I do not see these messages (from rpm scripts) in zypper.log? [opensuse] Why does software.opensuse.org prompt for Distro Settings -- and then IGNORE them?

All, For the first time today, software.opensuse.org triggered a pop-up window prompting me to choose a distribution to limit the search results (the default in the dropdown is "All Distributions"). I had no complaint with the past behavior of the page, but I though cool, I'll chose OpenSuse Leap 42.3 and just get results I'm looking for... All, A couple of weeks ago, Leap 42.3 jumped to Firefox 60esr despite Leap 42.3 coming with 52 -- which went against the policy of staying with the released version. At the time we were told on this list that was required because there would be no more releases of 52esr. That statement was untrue. On June 6, 2018 Mozilla released 52.8.1esr continuing the 52.8 branch, e.g. http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/52.8.1esr/ Will we get an update for 52.8.1esr in update, since that is the release that 42.3 should be on? -- David C. [opensuse] Apparmor service doesnt work (since upgrade?) on leap 15.0

Some test machine, I can not exactly tell if apparmor was working on 42.3 where the machine came from, or even earlier 42.2 before that. Default install, guess apparmor comes with that. Kde desktop. Just booted up 15.0 and I observed a red line in the bootup messages speaking about apparmor. What is apparmor for normal users about exactly and how would one reset it to default, whyever or whenever those defaults changed to nonworking config, and how would one overcome such situations? Is apparmor even needed for normal users? I guess it it because suse distro decided to install it for me. Any hint? [opensuse] Problem with system suddenly swapping with large amount of ram (seems a memory leak?)

Since the update to Leap 15, the longer my system runs, the more memory it consumes. I tried to track this but I do not understand. Currently it does swap until it blocks. If you restart the swap returns to normal..for some time. Hi Folks, I've full-installed Leap 15 on a test box in preparation for rolling it out to the users. But I've discovered some changes from 42.x that I can't figure out yet. I'll ask the questions on at a time for the sake of simplicity. Question #1: how can I get kdm to run on startup rather than sddm? I've installed kdm, and edited /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager: DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm", but sddm runs anyway. I've been using kdm to remain compliant with local security policy. For example, I need a login screen that doesn't show other usernames or the user currently logged in. I also need to display a click-through warning banner before login. No click to approve, the login fails. I've been doing this with zenity invoked from /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup. But sddm doesn't call Xstartup, kdm does. So I think I can restore our login security policy if I can get kdm to run. Any suggestions? [opensuse] Installer of Leap 15 and LVM: installer asks for formatting /home?

When running install on an existing system with an LVM (ext4), when asking to departure from existing files systems and then saying "import" previous install, I get the correct volumes (included LVM after having given the password of course). But unlike previous versions of Leap, this one tries to format /home?? Fortunately I saw it in the last moment. Hello friends! I have used Cinepaint for more than ten years, and it is still the best open source/free software image editor. GIMP 2.10 still lacks mature color management, the internal engines are programmed to presuppose sRGB in all files. Therefore GIMP is a limited alternative, at least for me. However, since I had to upgrade from OpenSuSE 13.2 to Leap 42.3 because of compatibility issues with new RAW image converters, I have encountered two big problems. I use CinePaint 1.4.0. The exact version is cinepaint-1.4.1-1.19.x86_64. I have also tried cinepaint-1.4.1-2.40.x86_64, but that one would not open a single file and instead crashed repeatedly. I was wondering if there is any advantages (except the ones natively provided by btrfs itself) or drawbacks using a btrfs subvolume as VM (qcow files) images storage ? https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=mac-win-linux2018&num=6 Phoronix did benchmarks w/windows10 macOS 10.13.4, Ubuntu, Win10 WSL Ubuntu18.04 Fedora WS 28, & Clear Linux 22780. Clear linux was leader almost 60% of the time followed by a 21% showing for MacOS and Fedora 10%... Win10 was in last place 38% of the time, followed by Ubuntu @ 30% of the time in last place... They don't rank the other OS's in the synopsis, but the best Tumbleweed did was middle of the pack on many tests, one it got 2nd place, while several it was dead last almost 6x slower on some tests against Clear linux. How's that possible? I would have thought the linux OS's would have been grouped closer together, but apparently not. Tumbleweed didn't show in any of the graphicsMagick packages. Article didn't say why. [opensuse] Internet doesn't work after 42.3 dup 15.0

Hi, I upgraded my laptop from 42.3 to 15.0 using zypper dup. I was able to access the internet before the upgrade, now I can't. I can connect to my wifi router, but the upgraded operating system won't allow me to access the internet now. I am connecting using Networkmanager. I tried to connect with my wired connection, and I can't get the internet through it as well. I switched to wicked, and in yast my wifi and other wifi's in the neighborhood are visible. So the hardware appears to work normally, but I still can't get the internet. I also cannot connect using a wired ethernet connection using wicked. So I switched back to Networkmanager. I have compared the network configuration settings in yast to my desktop computer settings, and the configuration appears to be identical. The laptop is a dual boot, and using Mr. Gate's system, I can connect to the internet normally. I would appreciate help to fix this problem. Hello: I frequently use different vnc programs: for server I use x11vnc or vncserver of xorg-x11-Xvnc package. I use either vncviewer-tigervnc or realvnc vnc clients. I also use different keyboard layouts on the server and client machines, usually default English layout and Hungarian layout with accented characters. The desktops I use KDE3 and KDE4. My question is how the keyboard schemes are defined/set in vnc (server and client side) and how it is decided that a given pressed character what character will be on the other side. It's seems to me really messy. For example which one is important: the keyboard layout on the client machine or the server machine? As long as it never breaks your fine. I have an older DV6000 which is stuck in head phone mode. The repair entails taking apart 64 connections half of them ribben cables and about two hours work. Once again, pressing Alt-F2 and then entering #<command> does not bring up the man page. This was a very useful feature, that hasn't worked for some time. Any chance of getting it back? [opensuse] help with fvwm

I have been running fvwm for so long that I forgot how I set it up. Where are a bunch of options in the menu that pops up from the lower left corner. But I am sorry to say that I do not know how to discover which option I am currently running under. I start fvwm2 from with my .xinitrc file. So I guess I am looking for some bland login that will not get in the way of fvwm when it starts. My current approach is to employ the fvwm button, and then execute fvwm from the window presented. I am frustrated by xosview not picking up the meter descriptions from .Xdefaults as happened in 42.3. Some things, such as placement and size are recognized, (I assume by fvwm), but not the graph descriptions which would be read by the xosview app itself. Sorry for probably dumb question. To Suse list users, Does anyone have VNC working with Open SUSE Leap 15? No matter how I configure things I get the black screen. Port 5801 and 5901 are in a listen mode. The web browser does the same thing, black screen after successful login. Hello, I have a Honeywell PC42t-203-FP Thermal Printer (USB) that worked perfectly on OpenSUSE 12.1 with a generic postscript driver. After upgrading to OpenSUSE 42.2 Leap, the printer no longer prints. Cups can find and install the printer, but when sending a print command, it hangs on "Sending data to printer".. The printer 'blinks', but nothing comes out ... I have tried to use the same PPD file that I was using in OpenSUSE 12.1, but no success. I have already checked permissions, tested various configurations, different drivers and I am doing all tests with root user. [opensuse] Leap 15.0 Networking Woes (NetworkManager conflicts with Wicked)

Hi, I have networking problem with fresh install of Leap 15.0 on 2 pcs, which seem to be similar to the one I had when upgraded 42.3 to Leap 15 late beta. However, this is 100% fresh install on reformatted SSD in HP desktop. Symptoms is the same - after first restart networking service (with Wicked) is broken. Examining logs showed that for whatever reason NetworkManager is not fully disabled. 1 - NetworkManager-wait-online.service still tries to start and fails with timeout error 2 - KDE NetworkManager plazma applet tries to initiate connection on eth0 and fails. It should show “ NetworkManager is not running” instead. I tried to fix this: 1) Disabled NetworkManager.service and NetworkManager-wait-online.service with systemctl disable NetworkManager.service systemctl disable NetworkManager-wait-online.service After restart annoying NetworkManager still disrupts networking. 2) Switched in Yast Wicked -> NetworkManager, the back, restart. Problem the same. rcnetwork restart cures problem till next system reboot. I can’t remove NetworkManager because it also deleted KDE / MATE. Switching KDE to MATE do not changes anything. Anyone can suggest what system component (I suspect some freedesktop or dbus-org services) disrupts networking ? Hardware: Lenovo X201 (ironlake with 8 GB Ram). OS: Leap 15 (upgraded from 42.3 (the latter was a fresh install). Program: rkhunter (issues a warning) To be known: the lenovo had a ram issue with memtest claiming errors. At the very time I received the first of these warnings. Therefore that could(!) be related. In the meanwhile the SO-DIMM have been changed. Memtest shows no errors now. Or really some malware problem (I doubt it, but the system is open to all exploits of spectre, meltdown etc, so in remote theory it "could" be). Did anybody encounter this type of warning? Does anybody know if a previous faulty ram (even after repair) could be responsible? I wanted to ask before proceeding to a fresh install as it is a lot of work. entropia is the user for all tasks and receives root mail mercurio just handles kontact connectix just handels network related tasks and is usually the first user to be logged in. What else (setting etc) could cause shared memory segments. Hi, I've just discovered a scary behavior of my Leap 15 installation. The notebook's SSD is a brand new MX500. I let the installer do the format and chose LVM and encryption. Then I copied all my files from an external SSD to the new one and I'm facing the issue now that many files (seems random) cannot be opened and are are shown to be 0B in size. Hi, I've noticed that Dictionary plugin in KRunner (alt-F2) doesn't work on my two computers, both running Leap 15 KDE Plasma (upgraded from 42.3). It seems that, when I enter "define <some word here>", a connection is attempted to a dict server on address 216.18.20.172, port tcp/2628, but no results are received/displayed. I see that in tcpdump and netstat. I tried another randomly chosen client for dict protocol, same server, same port, and it works. I filled a ticket at bugzilla, but am not hoping anything will happen soon regarding that. So, here I am, asking list members for help. Anybody? TIA and best regards, Radule

For historical reasons my longstanding practice has been to keep two, sometimes three, separate installations of openSUSE on this multi-boot machine. I use one of them as the principal productive installation, with the other(s) available for experiments or as recovery tools if I screw something up in the main installation. Each of the installations has its own segregated (ie non-shared) /home. But, also for historical reasons, they do all share three additional custom mounts, two for general data and one for images, videos and soundfiles. All installations including the three custom mounts are in ext4 only. Currently I have Leap 42.3 as the main daily use installation, with Leap 42.2 and Tumbleweed “in reserve”. My intention is to replace 42.2 with Leap 15 as a fresh installation (not an upgrade), for use as the principal productive installation. My question is about filesystems. I’ve watched the various discussions about Btrfs with interest, though I haven’t understood much of it and have so far chosen to stick with ext4 throughout. But Btrfs seems to be improving, including in the context of rollback. So, what are the implications, if any, of installing Leap 15 using its default Btrfs and xfs filesystems in place of the existing Leap 42.2 installation but leaving the three additional data partitions (and the other installations) formatted in ext4? Alternatively, should I also convert the three shared data partitions now in ext4 to Btrfs? If so, does that mean that the root filesystem for each of the other installations should also be converted to Btrfs? The released notes says the setting up the use of an alternate display manager has mover from /etc/sysconfig to the alternatives system. I can't locate documentation on that. The release notes says to use update-alternatives to Set Login Manager and Desktop Session. That is only thing I see in the release notes. I do not know what "To enable graphical management of alternatives, use the YaST module Alternatives" is going to do, and to what files. There is an example there used to switch the default-displaymanager to xdm: sudo update-alternatives --set default-displaymanager \ /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/xdm Login manager: default-displaymanager I have used fvwm2 in the past and would like to use it again. I tried to enable fvwm in the startup window present after booting, before logging on, but nothing worked. I am just looking for documentation now. My current Leap 15 system is pretty lame, so the docs may be in /usr/share, which I am currently not able to confirm. I have a Dell 1110 laser printer that worked with 42.3, but not 15.0 In CUPS, I get this error message: "SpliX Invalid PPD file version: 2.0.0 but the PPD file is designed for SpliX V. SpliX V. 2.0.0" In Yast software management, the openprinting-splix the installed version 2.0.0-2lsb3.2 is displayed in red, which I don't recall seeing before. In my case with oxygen-gtk theme I need additional libraries: libpcre librsvg If it is not working for you you can check the broken lib by editing the shell script /opt/Adobe/Reader9/bin/acroread. In line 22 replace exec with gdb, run acroread from the console and type run at the debugger prompt. [opensuse] What is so special and non-standard about Leap 15.0 network stack dhcpv4 client wise?

Situation: some soho router a.k.a. internet gateway device with some standard isp. LAN side the igd assigns ipv4 addresses via dhcv4 to the clients. Windows and all work nicely, only the leap, now 15.0 device suddenly is barely locatable on the network, all port assignments in the igd firewall, portforwarding and ipv4 assignment is bust. The router *did* assign always the same rfc1918 ipv4 address to most of the LAN clients. But then again OpenSUSE Leap 15.0 machine decided to go nuts and talk to the igd in a way that is beyond my understanding and I could not find out how this machine suddenly gets still the same 'always the same ipv4' steady ipv4 address, but all the rules and forwardings to this machine wouldnt work on the igd, until I needed to remove the machine from the igd config settings and reconfigure everything. How is this even possible? The igd assigns 'same' ipv4 addresses on the LAN by taking the MAC address of the LAN clients into consideration. In fact, this is the only thing that the igd talks about how it were to identify the LAN clients. Still, there must have been some more stuff that was beyond the visibility of the igd userinterface (web interface) that was taken into account, as all the port forwardings were not valid and did not reach this Leap 15.0 client at all, although everything was fine when the Leap was stil at 43.2 level. Then I found the release notes of 15.0... ::: 7.2 Wicked: Using RFC 4361 DHCPv4 client-id on Ethernet ...speaking about fancy 'new' rfc being taken into consideration with dhcp ipv4 setups as far as I understand. Only I have never heard about this rfc until the leap 15.0 documentation, and more importantly it was completely intransparent to me that the igd actually did distinguish the leap 43.2 stage from the leap 15.0 state of the machine. Obviously the MAC address has not changed at all, and the igd config was selected to maintain a virtually static ipv4 LAN wise, but it didnt. Again, openSUSE has caused me serious headaches and unreachable systems where I needed to manually intervene and set things straight or reconfigure or start from scratch. This gets really annoying a lot and I just dont understand why there cant be a steady and stable way to do things or at least to migrate things from one opensuse release to the very next in a steady way. Things like nonbooting systems I read about a lot by others posts or bug-reports, or things like this here about essential things changing rendering systems behave differently on an essential level are of the same impact to me. I am very disappointed of opensuse, again, and this project just doesnt grow on me at all any more. In my opinion there are way too many reboots of various kinds of software layers, stacks and components in the opensuse ecosystem, and as a general rule, a system upgrade is one of the worst nightmares I can possibly think of, when working in an opensuse environment. I can absolutely not recommend opensuse to anyone. I am upgrading an older SuSE-13.2 box to Leap. I have done a fresh Leap-15.0 install and ported over the source code that we ran on the 13.2 box. I builds fine but I am having an issue. The program is/has to be an suid pgm. It also uses fork/execvpe/wait to execute some external scripts. And that is where my problem lies. The user is a member of several groups but these group memberships seem to disappear when these external scripts are executed. For instance the user is a member of the cdrom group so he can eject and work with a DVD. Hello group, both problems I struggled with were discussed in the past. Due to recent discussion and different problems with btrfs builtin experimental raid, I decided to go to btrfs on md-raid (again, as I noticed later). I created a RAID 1 array, and created a new btrfs filesystem and created opensuse-style subvolumes. Restored my backup. Everything seemed to work fine... But after reboot, the btrfs filesystem is faulty and can't be repaired with btrfs check (does not complete, will segfault). It seems, that much data wasn't written to the hdds (missing transactions...). In a discussion two years ago, the assumption was a "write hole". In fact the SATA controller is being reset occassionally.. never had problems with that fact using ext3/ext4/reiserfs. Two years ago I switched to btrfs raid. But it was very problematically (missing implementations, no hot spare, ...) and also ended somewhen in fatal error.. Now, I am wondering if there is a good alternative filesystem? I like the subvolume management, which is easier to maintain as lvm, in my opinion. Important also snapshots and especially the cow-feature. Does anyone have tips? how can this write-hole problem be solved? any possibility to monitor/check filesystem while mounted? to get a working system again, any commands available to clear the filesystem contents, but leave the structure (subvolumes) intact? [opensuse] Grub Customizer broken in 15.0

I installed 15.0 on my notebook computer, where I have both Linux and Windows installed. This means I need a boot menu to select which OS I want to use. In the past, it was possible to edit the boot menu. Someone decided to "improve" things by removing that possibility. I then had to install Grub Customizer to edit the menu. That's now broken with 15.0. On top of that, my Grub menu has 15.0 twice, but no mention of Windows and no way to fix that. Is there any way to edit the menu now? [opensuse] a little help with Leap 5

I have been having a lot of trouble with upgrade, so pardon this if stupid question. I do not use LVM. When I boot the Leap 15 DVD and try to set up partitions, I get 6 rather that the usual 3 generated under 14.3. For some reason, that I can probably research on google, it sets up partition 1 as a BIOS boot partition. Not sure why this is required. But then it sets up partitions 2 and 3 as BtrFS partitions, then partition 5 as another BtrFS partition mounted as root. Then partitions for the usual swap and home file systems. Why are there 3 BtrFS partitions? The only comment I can find, all the way in Release notes:7 technical, is that there is a single subvolume for all of /var. I changed the root file system type to xfs and was able to generate the 3, (4 with BIOS boot), partition layout I am familiar with. Comments please. Hello, I'm on Tumbleweed with network manager and KDE. With some wifi networks (now 2), network manager can connect but it has no data flux and the ping doesn't work. I haven't connection issue with another wifi networks. I can use these wifi networks with an Ubuntu live USB. Thanks for your helping. [opensuse] Problem with leap 15 upgrade

I started to perform an upgrade from 43.2 to Leap 15 and received an error warning: "Some partitions on the system on /dev/sdc2 are mounted by kernel-device name" I had mounted the partitions by UUID. Is UUID that what is meant by a kernel device name? Because I was under the impression that the UUID belonged to the device. Should that cause the system upgrade to fail? I get message Execution of Command ""[["?usr.sbin.grub2-mkconfig","-o","/boot/grubd/grub.cfg"]]" failed Error output: Generating grub configuration file... and more., Then: ERROR:failed to lookup rootid:inappropriate ioctl for device. Is this a problem with the use of UUIDs? The first warning suggests changing the "mount-by" method to any other method. Don't know which other one to pick. Using google it appears that UUID is the most recommended. But another link says that the it you recreate the partitions they will get different UUIDs. I looked in /dev/disk and see by-id, by-label, by-path and by UUID. I would use by-id, but am concerned that all of the devices may not be known. Like 4GB SSD drives. By-path appears vulnerable to the pci id changing if one moves the drive. I usually do not put labels on all of my partitions, so do not know how what by label would look like.
