Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi All, This one has me really pulling my hair out. It started a couple of updates back and it hasn't improved since. I can be left waiting several seconds, up to 20 or 30 seconds or even more, when I close tabs, open new tabs, open new windows and close those windows. Because I keep several logged in sessions going at once and I 'context switch' like this many, many times throughout the day, these delays are badly impacting my work. I am changing internet providers and am failing to redirect my opensuse mail addresses. I went to novell/attachmate and changed my mail address from roadrunner to gmail and it appears to have set, but I am still receiving list mail to paka(a)opensuse.org via roadrunner (according to mail headers). https://en.opensuse.org/Special:Preferences indicates the desired change? [opensuse] no space left on the device

Hello, I was hit this morning by the "no space left on the device" symptom, probably related to BTRFS (?), when btrfs's df (znd normal df) gives at least half space free. To work I had to reinstall on the other disk a 13.2 version (with ext4, this time). I know it's a discussed problem, and I read many posts on the subject, but It still don't get how to solve it. I *can* login with the failsafe mode, as root (or not), CLI only, but any action that include temp file fails with "no space left on the device", yast segfault... I cleared /tmp and some files in /home with no change. In older openSUSE and SLES versions there was a package called "powersave": https://www.suse.com/documentation/sles10/book_sle_reference/data/sec_power… Especially the schema settings were useful, if an admin wanted to enable some powersaving features without detailed configuration. An example: /etc/sysconfig/powersave/common: AC_SCHEME="performance" BATTERY_SCHEME="powersave" Is there any good alternative for this package, especially for computers without a GUI? The package is gone. I already know the Powertop tool which does a good job, but it's interactive. Quick question: is there a way to trigger some script after any package update or install? Either after specific package, or just after any update and let script decide if it should do something or skip. I tried to install 13.2 as well as Tumbleweed 201500418 on a E-Machine with a 80 Gib free partition. Their was an ethernet connection. Both installations went fluently until, after the restart, they blocked when the the big 'K' icon appeared. Who can give me the suggestion how to proceed? One example is this site:https://www.siteground.com/support but there are plenty of similar ones. This design puts a lot of (unnecessary) stress on the eye. Is this design type simply the result of stupidity, or is there valid rationale supporting it? I'm running 13.2 x64 on this particular box. I use thunderbird email. I got a couple of email delivery errors this morning, yet I had sent no emails for some time from this box. I know it's not uncommon for an email address to be spoofed by spammers. I've not had this happen before, at least not like this. I'm sending this email from my box at work BTW. Hi I think i've found the source of the 30s timeout i get with wicked on boot up but i'm not sure how to resolve. If i check Yast/Network, it says i have 2 Network devices, eth0 (no MAC addr or BusID) and enp2s0 (has MAC amd BusID) Anyone know how i can delete "eth0" as it seems to be of no use. I tried deleting it in Yast/Network but it just reappears in the list. This story is a catalogue of disasters. My system was openSUSE 13.2 and KDE4 + some KF5 stuff. The filesystem is btrfs on a two device raid1 array, with separate /home, also on btrfs raid1. Graphics is nVidia 9600GT running the proprietary drivers, and driving a two monitor display. All was well until a recent kernel upgrade broke the nVidia kernel modules (http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=927018) I was able restore order by reverting the kernel to the previous working version, 3.16.7-7. Then the bug was apparently solved, and a new patch was issued, so I applied the new patch, which failed to load the nVidia kernel modules. After attempting various combinations of kernels and re-installing the nvidia kmp package, I eventually ended up with an unbootable system. Somewhere along the way I noticed that all the files in ~/bob had lost group write permissions - don't ask me how that happened. I then decided to re-install openSUSE 13.2 from DVD, and have now got a bootable system, but when I login as my user, the sequence stops after displaying the hard drive icon. i.e. no desktop, world, toolkit etc. I can do a graphical login as root (I know I shouldn't, and I shutdown the machine as soon as I'd seen that it worked), so what do I need to edit/delete in ~/bob to be able to load the KDE4 desktop. [opensuse] Growing btrfs file partitions -- will this work?

I'm experimenting with Btrfs. I made a Btrfs file system for a LVM partition as /srv. I grew it after growing the LVM partition (PV). I then shrunk it and shrunk the LVM PV, All well and good. In an ideal world everything would be on LVM and I could manipulate the space allocation as my heart desired. In a perfect world I'd never need to have /boot on its own real partition for when disaster strikes. I understand that Btrfs can add extra drives. I think this was originally intended to mean extra spindles, but I don't see why I can't create a LVM logical volume -- vgmain-ExtraRoot -- and add it. # btrfs device add /dev/mapper/vgmain-ExtraRoot / At this point I could re-balance as well, though I'm not sure if that is necessary or not. # btrfs filesystem balance / What I am NOT sure about is if I have to modify the entry in /etc/fstab to tell the system about this. I also don't know if I need to do a mkinitrd as well. Possibly /dev/sda3 / btrfs device=/dev/sda3,device=/dev/mapper/vgmain-ExtraRoot As for the initrd, shouldn't that do a btrfs device scan of some kind? This seems a potentially disastrous step. I don't want to do it on my production machine. I do have a laptop running 12.1 but it has an ext3 ROOTFS: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 980M 228M 685M 25% / # mount | grep sda3 /dev/sda3 on / type ext3 (rw,noatime,noacl,commit=60,data=ordered) I understand that ext3 can be converted to BtrFS but how much slack space is needed? What are the side effects? Perhaps the BtrFS gurus can advise? ------------------------------- Oh, and when that's done and I have a potentially large (and growable since its not on a LVM LV) space, I can .... Somehow ... Get the /home btrfs to .... Merge into it .... Somehow, then release the space that the /home LV uses and grow the ExtraRoot some more ... Perhaps ... I'm finding that dolphin lacks the ability to add ratings/tags/comments to files that stick around. I can enter them, and they promptly vanish. Baloo is enabled and running. I have kio slaves in there. That EXACTLY what I *DID* do! OK so it was the days before wikd, but never the less. The point here is that I *KNEW* for certain what did work as components before trying to combine them. Have you established them BOTH individually as components? Have you established that you can switch between them manually with both configured? I could live with manually disabling wifi when I plugged a cable in. As i said, my use-cases are sufficiently differentiated between home(=wired) and not-home(=wifi) that manually switching is not a big issue, not a deal breaker. Do think about your actual use-case as opposed to a hypothetical. How often, where, when, why, will you be running on wifi then suddenly an Ethernet connection appears? The Toronto Star recently made some changes that affect videos. With many videos, I am getting an error message: "The video you are trying to watch is currently unavailable. Please try again later. Error Code:VE_PD_NOTFOUND" When I search on that error code, it appears it's related to Flash, which is no longer being updated for Linux. It also seems to happen on recent videos, not older ones. Any ideas? I have configured wicked to control my wired and wireless devices. The wireless start mode, read from ifcfg-wlp11s0, is auto which according to the man page means start on boot. When I did a reboot I was forced to execute in ifdown and ifup before it was connected. Firefox (37.0) is not saving it's history when closed. This is under OS 13.1/kde 4.11.2. FF used to save the history of open tabs but no longer does that. When I open the history menu all the restore options are grayed out. Is there a shortcut to force saving this history? I think your system might have settings in KDE or GTK that are not feasible without the nvidia driver. To get a normal boot you will have to choose that option. Hello, I just got two of my computers running opensuse 13.2 to communicate over ssh and mount each others directories via NFS. In order to do accomplish this I had to load and start numerous services. sudo systemctl enable rpcbind.service sudo systemctl start rpcbind.service sudo systemctl enable nfsserver.service sudo systemctl start nfsserver.service sudo systemctl enable sshd.service sudo systemctl start sshd.service Reading the documentation I think that the way this is to be automated is to include links to the desired services residing in /usr/lib/systemd/system/* to the directory /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants. Then during boot when the mujltiuser starts all of these services will be started again. Is this interpretation correct? I notice that when I installed the sshd service it already made one of these links for me. Hi if i escape the boot sequence to watch the services starting, it get stops on "wicked" with this message:- A start job is running for wicked managed network interfaces (30s/) it seems to be pausing for something else as the number in brackets starts at "1s" and usually gets to to "30s" before it "times out". Hi, just to ask before filing a bug report. The most recent pulseaudio update openSUSE-RU-2015:0741-1 did brake the audio on my Lenovo X201 notebook. The HDMI sound is not available any more within applications, but HDMI works (a bit scratchy so) when it is selected before starting applications using audio. It reproduces the test sound. Once any application that uses audio is started, the mixer only shows "Pulseaudio" as selection. This is a Problem because I am using a notebook on an Ultrabase docking station and normally you have to choose between HDMI, Analog and others. Now what happens is Default Alsa Output (currenlty PulseAudioSound Server) is default and even if I go to a highter Priority for HDMI it is not proposed or accepted by any application. How can I tell Pulseaudio to use HDMI when available as default. Currently I can use HDMI at all anymore. Only the analogue card inside of the notebook and the notebook speaker are used. My Tumbleweed root filesystem, btrfs, keeps jumping to full or nearly so. I just cleaned /.snapshots/ of a considerable amount but each time I remove unnecessary files, the system quickly fills itself. What to do? All, This thread is a split from the autossh in windows thread, but this is pure opensuse. I'm messing with ssh reverse tunnels for the first time in a couple years. Using a openSUSE 13.2 target laptop and a openSUSE 13.1 server === >From the target (a laptop) I'm trying the command: ssh -R 5590:localhost:22 user(a)cloud1.intelligentavatar.net (cloud1.intelligentavatar.net is a test server of mine.) but it is not working as I expect 2 questions: 1) On the client after invoking the above I get an interactive command prompt on the server as if I ran ssh with no args. I don't recall that happening before. What do I need to change on the ssh line on on the 13.1 server to NOT have it actually give me an interactive command line. I only want the tunnel established. FYI: from the examples online I think what I'm doing should already work, so this may even be a bug of some kind? 2) I had tunneling working last night and this morning. Then it quit working. I had to reboot the opensuse 13.1 server to get it working again. I hope that is not a recurring problem, but for now, nothing to do that I know of. Please, no flames. I went into the yast2 gui and changed the network setup from Network Manager to Wicked. All appeared happy until I went to firefox. If I clicked on google, it came up and performed the search I requested. But when I tried to load one of these, opensuse.org, I received an "unable to Connect" failure. All of the name servers I had previously listed for wicked are grayed out under Network manager, so I am curious if the ones I had listed are not correct, or I listed them improperly. Also, what should be in Domain Search field? [opensuse] Mixed Ethernet interface configuration

We assemble systems where Ethernet devices are statically configured. They are initialized when the system boots, and the user does not have access via, say, KDE. They can only be modified by root, and typically in yast. We like this because any accidental change causes havoc. I would like to add a USB network device to the mix. It will be a telephone that the system tethers to in order to access the outside world. In the best of worlds, it would automatically be configured via DHCP. But I do not see how to do this via the traditional static method. The device may not be connected when the system boots. And it may be a different telephone at any time. I do not know how to predict the device handle. I am trying to see how to keep the static network configurations not under user control while allowing other ones to be dynamic and under user control. Or at least allow the USB device to get configured in a predictable fashion when it is connected. I had thought that a udev rule may also be a way to go. But I don't seem to get that to work as expected (surely my mistake somewhere). [opensuse] connecting desktops

Having 3 desktops on a large desk, I have never found the time to get them connected. Transferring files etc. from one to the other I use an USB stick and can live with it. Would like though to be able to connect them to exchange bigger data direct. Two of the computers are running SUSE running KDE and one (still) runs Windows XP. The computers are connected via my router. Daily a list of some files of unknown worth (to me) keeps growing in the root's root directory. An example of these files is here: http://susepaste.org/56549975 What are these .auth* files and what purpose do they serve? By asking this I am not asking for an in-depth explanation of what they are or reason for their existence but asking whether they can be deleted before they takeover the space on the hard drive? :-) There doesn't appear to be any process which deletes them so can - or do I need to - delete them on a regular basis? Hello, I come again with the same subject, because I have an other problem (minor) on the very same config. On Thunderbird (imap, dovecot server), I deleted three folders. thses folders do not show anymore in roundcube (and squirrellmail) on the server, but they keep coming again in thunderbird. I'm not sure when. If I delete them, they disappear, but I see them again sometime after (after reboot? after update?) I downloaded a short time ago an iso file which I burnt using k3b onto a CD. When I inserted a blank CD for this purpose I got the "notification" wee-d-git showing me that a blank something was inserted and "asking" what I wanted to do with it: burn it with k3b or what? As usual, I simply ignored this "notification" and started k3b and burnt the iso (successfully :-) btw). All this was done a couple of hours ago and the newly created CD was safely stored away. Just now I went to do something else and noticed that the "notification" wee-d-git is still showing in the taskbar. So I looked at it and.....it is showing that I still have a blank CD-R in the drive and asking me which of the 2 options I want to use on it. And this "notification" wee-d-git isn't going away! (This whole thing is getting crazier by the day :-) .) Anybody else notice this behaviour from this "notification" wee-d-git? All, -- goal -- I want to be able to "remote desktop" from my house to my office, but a NAT firewall is blocking me and I don't have the ability to open a hole in the firewall. The target machine is a Windows 7 PC. I setup logmein hamachi, and I've been very disappointed how often it goes down / fails, so I want to use my own infrastructure. I have a cloud based openSUSE box I can use to build a reverse tunnel on, so I'm hoping a "remote desktop" session can be routed through the cloud based server. -- history -- I have in the past needed to remotely log into a openSUSE PC hidden behind a NAT router which I did not have control of the router to setup a firewall forwarding rule. I used autossh on the target opensuse box to establish a reverse tunnel to a cloud based linux server. Then anytime I wanted to ssh into the target I just ssh'ed into the cloud based server and my connection got forwarded to the target opensuse box. I hoping to somehow do something similar, but with MS remote desktop this time. -- ideas -- I'm totally flexible on how this is accomplished. The opensuse server in the cloud doesn't have to be part of the solution, but I suspect using it as a SSH forwarder will be my best option to let me tunnel remote desktop traffic through it most. Installing on a clean partition gave me the info that xscreensaver-data-extra failed to install. After the restart it ended in a screen with Firefox, KinfoCenter, Office, Online Help and openSUSE. Any click in the green screen produced different rectangles. No further progress. What can I do? Hi, I've been trying to use the systemd pulseaudio service on 13.2 without success. If I start pulseaudio with exactly the same arguments as the service, it works. If I start the systemd service (package pulseaudio-system-wide), it fails. Hello, Here in OS 13.2/KDE apper shows updates from time to time. I accept them, it starts doing some things and then the windows stays showing "waiting for other things" ("Warten auf andere Vorgänge"). In the process list I see that it waits for rights ("Auf die Berechtigung wird gewartet"). Butz there is no place where I could enter a password... If I click on "cancel" (abbrechen) nothing happens. This is new on 13.2. How can I give apper the rights it needs? All, The downloads (downarrow) in the toolbar (next to the chat smiley face) lets you click it and see a list of recently downloaded files. When you click the little "Open Contained Folder" folder icon, FF brings up a black & white confused little file manager called "Files" created by "The Files authors". I've searched about:config and applications, but either didn't look under the correct (download, browser, containing, etc....) search term or didn't recognize it when I found it. All, I must be getting senile, but I recall a key combination in KDE that would that would lock the scroll of two windows together. I has been several years since I've had the need to use it, and now can remember how/what it was. I can't remember if it was a 3rd party app or something that was part of the desktop. I tend to think it was some basic part of the desktop. My google foo has failed (it must have been an obscure bit of functionality). Does anybody else recall such a feature? The kernel did not panic, keyboard worked but systemd refused to continue. Hello, I made a bit of mistake that I cannot appear to get out of. I modified my /etc/default/grub file to include the 1920x1200 resolution as I described previously. I have another disk in my computer, and an opensuse USB disk. When I performed my grub2-mkconfig it captured these two system also. Now if I unplug my USB drive, the system gets messed up and will not respond to commands. What commands can give grub2-mkconfig so that it will ignore the USB and other drive? It may think that that the USB is my primary system, though when during boot I f2 and the tell it to boot from the hard drive the same things happen. I caught the recent thread re kernel v4 (from Kernel Stable) use and some of the experiences being reported. Here, for desktop I'm seeing stable use with -default & -desktop. But the situation is getting slowly worse as version increases in the Xen Dom0 & DomU cases. At the moment Boots -default Boots -xen Dom0 Restarts -xen Dom0 Boots -xen DomU Pkg available? The disk UUID’s have changed so maybe that is the problem? Does grub use the disk’s UUID in it’s boot block? Hi, since I switched my Laptop to OS 13.2 with BTRFS as root filesystem, after each resume I see an insane disk activity on my system disk. [opensuse] GRUB hangs after cloning root partition from one machine to another machine

Hi all. I used Clonezilla to make a backup of a suse 12.3 root and home partition on a production machine OK. A Dell PowerEdge R240. Previous to that on an identical test machine, I was able to make snapshots of sda2 + sda3, and restore these partitions again to that same test machine, and it booted OK from the GRUB prompt. So that was my DR plan in place and documented! Now I have used Clonezilla to make a snapshot of the production machine’s root and home partitions, and when I try to restore the root OS partition to the test machine I cannot even get a GRUB command line prompt. All I get is the word GRUB and a frozen command line. Can anyone shed some light on this please? Hi list, I recently upgraded (rather:re-installed) my system to 13.2, which first used NetworkManager for setting up the network. Though it was sort off annoying that I always had to restart my VPN after a hibernation, what really made me dump it was that several times after an zypper up it lost all connection to the device, and I ended up rebooting to return it to a sane state... So I changed to wicked (I'm not using wireless anyhow), and set up VPN via systemd. While this works fine, it behaves weird when I switch to a different (wired) network (as I do daily between home and work). The network is set for DHCP, and after boot I can see the IP address using ifconfig. But if I suspend and resume connected to the other network, ifcofig will still show the old address, allthough I can see in the system logs that DHCP has acquired a new address for that interface. Both systems exibit the same behavior. OK, they work. Linux auto detects them and, after the NIC is configured via Yast, there is network connectivity. For a while. An indeterminate time, really. Maybe a few minutes, maybe and hour, maybe a day. It ain't the nic, it ain't the hardware, it has to be the operating system. I have applied updates but nothing has changed the behavior. Has anyone on the list run across this behavior before? It is quite frustrating. I have a workaround that keeps an su term open with "systemctl restart network.service" which re-initializes the nic but having to do that really sucks. The 32 bit system is at my grandkid's place and she is definitely computer challenged but she seems to understand the issue and is able to restart the networking when necessary. [opensuse] Converting from firefox to chrome(ium)

Has anyone made this conversion successfully. I tried it earlier today and met with problems a) importing the settings from firefox at all! Only a limited part of the bookmarks came though, what was on the menu bar. None of my daily snapshots came though. I don't know about forms etc. I never got that far. b) I had a backup/bookmarks of my current tabs and imported just that and tried opening them all. The tabs were unreadable compared to FF, and I could not get any of them to actually display. After a while the load factor crept up into the 50s. I've never had it that high on Linux before. It renders the machine unusable. So whatever shortcomings FF has I don't see that I can replace it with Chrome. What am I doing wrong? This one has been a real problem for me. I will provide a brief summary, and more specifics if requested. I have a couple of older laptops (AMD based Dell 1721) that I would like to use for reading documents etc. It took hours to install openSuse on them because the CPU speed is kept at the lowest level. If I do a cpupower frequency-info, it provides a range of valid values from 0.8GHz to 2.2GHz. When I examine entries in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq I find: cpuinfo_max_freq 2200000 cpuinfo_min_freq 800000 cpuinfo_cur_freq 800000 scaling_max_freq 800000 scaling_min_freq 800000 bios_limit 800000 I am worried about the "bios_limit" being set so low, and where does that setting come from. I did a grep on /etc, /usr/lib, /usr/lib64 and /usr/share and could find no file referencing bios_limit. When I searched /lib I found three modules, including the powernow-k8 module that included that reference. This bios_limit entry is also not present on my other, faster, machine, which does limit overclocking. And I see no place in the 1721 BIOS setup that allows setting a limit on CPU speed. The list of available governors is userspace, ondemand and performance (currently set to userspace, probably because I tried manually the cpupower frequency-set -f 1800000 command, which had no effect. I am back on my faster machine now, and plan to unroll the kernel source and see what I can discover there. I do not know if powernow-k8 sets, or just reads that entry. Any help would be appreciated. I just do not understand why the cpuinfo_max_freq entry can be set to 2.2GHz, while a limit is also set to 0.8GHz. [opensuse] Any where to go for help with X widows and an external monitor

Hello again, I have tried everything I can think of, including building a new 13.2 system, but I cannot get openSuse to boot with an external monitor attached. I do not understand the different layers present in openSuse, and why one is required to open the system settings and manually configure the external display after the boot. What does the Display and Monitor application know about that the system is ignorant of before my manual intervention. There was a time back when one generated an xorg.conf file that contained all of the settings for all of the monitors and graphics adapters. No user space application was required to enable the external monitor, and the boot scripts appeared on both screens, if configured that way. Now if I boot with the external monitor the refresh rates are trashed. If I ctrl-alt-backspace and get back to the X server, remove the external display, it comes up synced correctly. Then I can go and manually add the external monitor. But I am in a situation where the computer and its screen are not convenient. I have a hub that allows me to switch my monitor, mouse and keyboard between many computers. Why is it designed this way? Is there any way to eliminate the manual step through the Display and Monitor GUI? I do not understand what has been improved by this added complication. What am I missing? I can find no openSuse mailing list for X related issues. I did have this working under Fedora, so I know it is possible. Please advise. Graphics card is nVidia 9600GT running the latest nVidia proprietary drivers, driving twin monitors. Every so often, the system freezes for between 5 and 60 seconds. The mouse cursor still moves, but windows won't scroll, desktops won't switch and often sound gets cutoff for the duration of the freexe-up. It's irritating, but not a show stopper. I'm running gkrellm, including its 'Proc' viewer. This shows ~540 processes and 4 users, but when the lockup occurs, the brown graph climbs up to the top of the view port then gradually subsides. I've also tried having htop running, but it doesn't provide much useful information - no CPU hogging, no swapping out, etc. It would seem there may be some process that runs away every so often. Is there some file I can monitor or tail to catch it in the act. I wanted to build a openSuse 13.2 system on an AMD rather than my current Intel platform. I was planning on installing 13.2 from the installation disk, then adding the packages required to mirror my current system. I have studied a lot of the zypper manpage, bloody 1953 lines long! I found a file /var/log/zypp/history that appears to contain all of the updates to my system. The manpage suggests "see the shell command". But the manpage also says "shell support is not complete so expect bugs there". The history file appears to have installation date and time, a command, package name, version, architecture, followed by what appears to be maybe some path to the RPM? Is this what the shell is expecting, and will it read these lines and update my other machine? Or is this the wrong approach all together? The manpage states that if I had set the keeppackages property, all of the RPMs would be saved in /var/cache/zypp/packages and I could use zypper to install them directly from there. But I did not know about that property until recently. Comments, suggestions? [opensuse] Problem adding Wireless after install

On laptops and desktops this works aucomagically when the wireless is connected at install time. However if you forgot it or went old school and later decide to add wireless your in problems. Currently I have an older system with 11.4 on it and I am trying to add wireless after the fact with Yast. I have installed iw and smpppd and gone into Yast to setup the Engenious 9603H which works fine on the laptops. I have tried setup in Yast with manual trigger ifup ifdown and no go. What is the best way to overcome this short of reinstall. And before you ask most of my stuff is to old for 13.x even my best systems choke on Gnome 3. so upgrading to a hung system is not in the works. [opensuse] Help with VGA display on laptop.

I have just begun researching this problem, so pardon me if I missed the obvious again;-) I have a Dell 1721 laptop with an AMD/ATI RD690M {Radeon Express 1200/1250/1270] graphics controller. OpenSuse 13.2 functions perfectly on the internal UXGA laptop screen. But when I connect an external monitor (Dell 2405FPW also UXGA) and boot the system the graphics are trashed. Both are UXGA, and I tried Unified Outputs. And this also happens when the monitor is turned off during the boot. So I assume it is the presence of the VGA plug that is causing the corruption during boot. If I plug the monitor in after the system has been booted the monitor does not detect the computer, suggesting that the computer is in a sleep mode. But if I look at System Settings/Display Configuration GUI both screens are shown. The laptop monitor is working great and the external monitor sees nothing. I have successfully used this pair of devices since 2008 under Fedora?? So I assume it is a setup problem. Tomorrow I will try a fresh install from the distribution disk with the monitor connected to see if there are any variations. I also tried to make a VGA connection from my laptop that provides HDMI connections. It has an Intel graphics chipset. I used an HDMI to VGA adapter and achieved similar results. But if I connect this unit via the HDMI cable rather than the VGA cable it functions correctly. Tomorrow I will also try connecting the this computer through the VGA cable to the HDMI monitor, as opposed to the UXGA monitor. Is there a guide to setting up X under openSuse 13.2? Since the system works in single monitor mode, I am assuming that the kernel modules etc. are correct. Nothing obvious was present in my dmesg file, but I am not sure what to look for. I have edited xorg.conf files since the 90s, but I believe that is discouraged now. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've hit 2 errors so far, and still can't install a theme: - Issue one: mod_php5 not enabled Solution: a2enmod mod_php5 (or can be done via yast) That allows basic wordpress to run and new posts to be made. The first thing I tried after that was installing a theme. - Error when trying to install a theme: "There are no HTTP transports available which can complete the requested request." Solution I used: zypper in php5_curl - Exposes a second error when trying to install a theme: === Downloading install package from https://downloads.wordpress.org/theme/guardian.2.0.zip… Unpacking the package… Abort class-pclzip.php : Missing zlib extensions === I haven't found the fix for that yet, but I'm surprised to hit these issues trying to get a popular package to work. To get the network bridge to be activated on boot, you have to enable wicked-nanny /etc/wicked/common.xml - <use-nanny>false</use-nanny> + <use-nanny>true</use-nanny> It's a known bug that say's "fixed" by a new wicked release. [opensuse] Manually checking ext4 file system for any errors

In a galaxy long ago one could boot into openSUSE by putting level 1 in the boot command and login as root after which you could manually check for any errors in the ext3 or ext4 file system by issuing the following commands: mount -o remount, ro /dev/<hdX>/<sdX> followed by e2fsck /dev/<hdX>/<sdX> and, if errors were found, follow the prompt(s) to have any errors repaired. A few minutes ago I tried this on the laptop which has Tumbleweed installed on ext4 file system (I didn't want to this experiment on my main system on the desktop). Booting into level 1 seems to be OK and logging in as root was OK but then when I issued the command- mount -o remount, ro /dev/sda5 [#] I got the response (error msg) that- mount: / is busy The above sequence of commands worked for years in SuSE and then openSUSE so why has it now stopped working? Or put another way, how does one go about manually checking the file system for errors by running "e2fsck"? Why run "e2fsck" manually you may ask? Because I have found that the checking which is done automatically after X number of boots by the built-in system does not always pickup the errors in the ext3/4 file system. (Don't try to convince me otherwise because I have proven that to myself several times over the years. In any case, this is not the point. The point is why I now cannot check the file system using the method above which was spelt out in detail in the Administrative Manual which came with the version of S.u.S.E.?) Can anyone please give details on how now to manually check the ext3/4 file system for errors? [#] sda5 is where / of TW is installed. 'site:opensuse.org sdb: network wicked' produces nothing containing string "sdb:". https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Wicked contains nothing obviously about configuration in its few listed topics. Now that the old ways have been replaced with Wicked, search results are even harder to sift through, assuming one can get onto the web in the first place... Can more than one default route per interface be configured? If so, where? /etc/sysconfig/network/ifroute-<interface> ??? /etc/sysconfig/network/routes ??? elsewhere ??? If not, which file or files must be changed to contain the relevant GW IP? I configure my own installations with fixed IP. I want to be able to take any of them elsewhere, discover the IP of the relevant gateway/router, and using mcedit, change, or add, whatever is necessary, without starting any GUI, YaST, or any kind of "manager". Is this asking too much? I tried this several hours ago. Getting/using an IP was no problem. Working DNS was no problem. Never could get a default route into a routing table. 'route add default gw <IP>' didn't do anything regardless of what I tried changing in /etc/sysconfig/network/. What else I tried I cannot remember. :-( Same machine I specially preconfigured before leaving here with an additional 13.1 with DHCP. So when I left here, I had 1 DHCP and 3 fixed IP openSUSE installations that worked. Routing worked there in 13.1 with DHCP initially (e.g. success to ping www.google.com) but never again after lost Dlink DIR-655 router password required doing a hard reset, which reset its IP to its default 192.168.0.1. Afterward, no matter what I booted, if ifconfig -a showed a properly configured interface, I could reach the router and login with Firefox, and I could ping the router, but I could not ping www.google.com ('no route to host', among other observed failures, such as no reaction at all, depending on which OS booted). Couple weeks ago I went on vacation. In preparation, I backed up laptop, and shut it down, (powered off). Today, I get back, fire it up, and the root file system (btrfs) will only mount in read-only mode. So I boot up with an install CD in recovery mode, run a btrfs check, and get a screen scroll of over 2500 files with reference counters of zero. The system will boot, but locks up shortly there after, and often with a watch dog timer indicating that one or the other of the CPUs locked up. (sometimes 0, sometimes 1). I can't seem to find any Google foo to repair that file system, so tomorrow I will nuke the thing, reinstall (I'm done with BTRFS, I never saw any benefit from it) and restoring from backups which I took just before vacation. This is a brand new 13.2+updates system - a desktop that isn't even being used. I have syslog-ng 3.6.2. According to 'man journald.conf', the default is to have 'ForwardToSyslog=yes', but with barely messages flowing (it's mostly "Forwarding to syslog missed x messages."), why are they missed? All, A value of HISTCONTROL=erasedups causes all previous lines matching the current line to be removed from the history list before that line is saved. (man bash) This isn't working on 13.1 for me. Can anyone else confirm that duplicates are NOT removed in 13.1 when this value is set? Searching, it looks like other distros have patched bash to insure this works when multiple terminals are open. (e.g.: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bash/+bug/189881) If this is confirmed, could something similar be done here? The reason, after moving my history file from 11.4 to 13.1 and running for close to a year, I have close to 14,000 duplicate lines -- despite having 'erasedups' set: current lines: 20000 - uniq lines: 6099 = 13901 duplicates To fix the problem temporarily, I wrote the current file out, then sorted uniquely, then deleted the current history, read the sorted unique file in as current, and wrote the current back to HISTFILE: $ history -w | sort | uniq > uniqfile $ history -c $ history -r uniqfile $ history -w $ rm uniqfile That seems to have fixed the issue in the current session, and ~/.bash_history is current correct, but when closing the remaining sessions, I suspect the duplicates will once again be written to ~/.bash_history, even though 'erasedups' is set. If someone can confirm 13.1 is ignoring 'erasedups', I'll file the bug. -- David C. hi all I was just reading Per's email about the lack of dolphin refresh ( i got about half way through) and it vanished from sight and from the list. It wasn't in the waste bin. I closed kmail and gave it a minute before restarting and it didn't reappear but the thread of 2 replies that was attached to Per's email was the last to reappear on restart. This thread is in the middle of todays emails so it wasn't at the top of the list, strange refresh process for it to appear after the latest emails in the list. [opensuse] Tumbleweed: Restart doesn't work correctly.

Whern I select 'Restart' within GNOME 3.16 under Tumbleweed, the computer fails to restart. Instead the monitor shuts off (LED) and the fans in the PC spin down. It does not restart, nor does it shut down. This forces me to hold down the power button to restart. Has anybody else encountered this problem? Hello, I'm preparing a workshop for OSC-15 Not knowing what will be the networks up there, I want to setup my own private access point to share files with participants. For test purpose, I simply use a wifi device on my main desktop, always connected with ethernet cable. The final will be done on my laptop with a spare usb wifi device. I created an "osc15-jdd" user with simple password for sharing. To make things simple, I try to simply use the network manager. right now the config is dawn simple: open the network applet, choose the tools icon, add a connection.. then I have options I'm not sure to understand. I have in the menu (among others): wifi, shared wifi, then virtual and vpn. as first try, I used "shared wifi". What I get is a public AP natting users to the net without any other config. From a client (just now my laptop) I can access the net (I just did an update on the laptop with this connexion), but not connect to the main. I can ping the main computer (local address 10.42.0.1), but not ssh on it. remember I didn't yet restart anything (not even sshd). This result is not the one I seek for. All, Updates to 13.1 brought in FF36 which has the annoying habit of popping up a dialog for search engine selection every time I type something in the search dialog -- grr. I've already set preferences -> search to my default StartPage search and I DO NOT want to have that annoying dialog pop-up every time I type. It often covers up the very text I am reading/copying into my query. Has anyone found an about:config switch, or userChrome.css/userContent.css way to kill it? p.s. - Will someone please take UI development away from the children who liked playing with Crayons and fingerpaints... I have some desktops on 13.1 - it was pointed out to me that dolphin doesn't automagically refresh and show e.g. new files that were created. For instance, I'll scan something with xsane, save it as a jpeg, then convert to a pdf using 'convert' from the command line. When I swap to a dolphin window with the directory open, I have to hit F5 to refresh the display to see the jpeg and the pdf. Is there yet another setting I need to tweak to enable that? All, I need help with the following error. This error is displayed when starting FF from the command line. I suspect this is the cause of the crash reporter not showing after a crash and only a blank window being shown on regular FF start. I want to try and fix this without doing a "FF Refresh" if possible. The problem is I don't know enough about FF startup or the init sequence to know what this is telling me. After the main error, the console error points to Status-4-Evar having an undefined window. However, I think this may be the **result** of the error and not the **cause** of the error. (correlation does not equal causation...) I already installed laptops with openSUSE 13.2 and full-disk encryption on one hard drive. I used an UEFI boot partition (/boot/efi) and the filesystems / and /home (plus swap) on an encrypted LVM. This works. But now I have a server with three hard disks. I want to setup the same full-disk encryption with YaST like on the laptops. On the server I want to use LVM over RAID-5 (mdadm). Is this possible? (with YaST, manually nor not possible) Is there any detailed documentation for this? (Until now I am able to setup RAID-5 with YaST. But I do not find the option to encrypt the LVM volume group. Without a LVM volume group I can not use "/" as a mount point for LVM logical volumes. Encryption for the RAID 5 device /dev/md0 works. But this kind of setup may cause problems if I want to extend the LVM volume group later with additional RAID devices.) I also have a problem with unlocking the LUKS encryption. Unlocking with password works. The point of my mentioning ZDnet is that its not for the ultra-geeks but neither is it for the Joe Sixpack who just wants to write to twitter and facebook. It is, however, for the 'masses' and tries to make the point that you don't have to be the pencil-neck twerp of the movies to use Linux. This series started off by making the point that it was easier to install Linux than to deal with the mess of the recent Windows updates. While I haven't done a Windows install recently and "10" may be something quite different, I've done very complex Linux installs (LVM, various FS, restores...) with less hassle than some should-be-simple operations with Windows. And yes, installing updates among them. I have up trying to move a hard disk from a dying mobo to a new one, something that you 'just do it' with Linux. Hi all, I'm managing a few servers with the default openSUSE 13.1 tomcat7. I now require to upgrade tomcat to version8 (8.0.21 preferably). However I didn't find any repository providing it. I could install it manually and configure a systemd service for it, but I would prefer it the rpm way. Is anyone using it? If so can anyone provide me it's location?
