Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. Hi. We have 3 graphics tablets to share between 18 of us. If the tablet is plugged in when the user logs in from the kde login screen the tablet works fine. If it is then removed and the plugged into another client on the lan, the user has to login and log out to make the tablet work. A pain. Hi 11.4 I've set up a samba server using Yast. It works. I can see the home shares on a linux client and I get asked for a username and password when I click the 'homes' share e.g. from Dolphin by clicking network and then samba. That's _almost_ what I want. What I want it to do is use samba to authenticate linux clients like I do with NIS at the moment. There are no users apart from root on the clients and /home on the server is mounted as /home on the clients by NFS. The kde login screen on the client displays all the users on the server. Using yast windows domain membership on a client I cannot check the box 'Use SMB information for Linux Authentication'. I get the error: 'Cannot use the workgroup 'hh1' for Linux authentication.'. All linux users on the server have been given samba passwords and I have tried the server and client with firewall enabled and disabled. My question is: can samba do what NIS/NFS does at the moment? hi, though i have downloaded but before going to install have some doubts: At the page: http://en.opensuse.org/images/f/f4/11.4_LIVE_installer-partitioning1.png (which is an intermediate step of installation), there is an option: 'Edit partition Setup...', so should I use it ? Because I already have Ubuntu LTS and just to replace it (only Ubuntu LTS with openSUSE) but want to make the Windows XP remain intact, so please let me know which files to be deleted/changed/done....., whatsoever... Further the option of LVM based, what does it do? I request if someone could really explain / elaborate/ link me to this (for explanation). After a total breakdown of kmail I want for the time being using Thunderbird. [opensuse] openSUSE and HDMI output

I have a ThinkPad E520, which has HDMI output, in addition to the traditional VGA. When I connect a HDTV via HDMI, I cannot get the monitor & TV to show the same thing, unless I set both to 1024 x 768. I can have separate displays at full resolution. Is there anyway to get both displays to show the same thing, without limiting resolution. Another issue is when HDMI is plugged in, the audio does not switch to the TV, leaving audio playing on the ThinkPad built in speakers. Both of these items work well in Windows 7, where as soon as I plug in the external HDTV, the video is duplicated and the audio switched, as it should. Why doesn't openSUSE do this? I'm running 12.1 RC1, but this likely occurs with earlier versions too. The two unused partitions allow me to install the next release without disturbing the current one. Grub will automatically set it up so you can boot to the previous release if something goes wrong. You can also manually mount the previous / if you need to copy configuration files or other programs not a part of the OS release. You can make installs in one pair of partitions one time, the other pair for the next release, while /home stays the same, as long as you don't accidentally format it! There are lots of other ways to do it, your mileage may vary... Since today a half way normal functioning from my kmail makes it possible to read messages in the inbox and other folders but I found out that not all messages were sorted into their designated folders. Just three mails from the suse list showed in the inbox and were then filtered into the suse folder, at least that is what i thought. They are not there but if I go to the inbox with midnight commander those suse mails are in the new list together with a mail which I have read. At the same time synchronizing the inbox folder takes very long. The functioning of my kmail today started after I e,tied 161 messages in new, all messages which I already read and deleted. [opensuse] installing GRUB on adjusted clone

I have a dual boot laptop, with windows vista as originally installed, and openSUSE 11.4 running. I normally run openSUSE and only go back to vista for a particular thing here or there. I had my vista running in 2 primary partitions, with the first partition being the vista boot partition, and the 2nd partition being a data partition. When I installed openSUSE, I first shrank the data partition. After shrinking the 2nd partition, for the rest of the disk I made an extended partition, like so: sda1 - 39gb - windows c sda2 - 92gb - windows d (data) sda3 - extended partition sda5 - 2gb - swap partition sda6 - 20gb - root partition sda7 - 20gb - not mounted - for later install of the next distribution and testing sda8 - 292gb - home partition After using this for some time, I decided I really don't need 92gb for my windows partition, and I would really like to take about 20gb of that and move it to the end of sda8. Of course, I don't know how to do that on an active partition, so instead I purchased another hard drive. I have formatted my 2nd hard drive basically the same as the active hard drive, except that on the new drive my sdb2 is only 72gb and my sdb8 is 312gb. I used a windows cloning tool to copy my windows c and d drives to the new drive, and I used rsync to copy my root and home partitions over. I gave the root and home partitions in the new drive the labels rootb and homeb. So, now I have the new drive set up and I want to put it in my laptop and run off of it instead of my old drive (which I will eventually use as a clone backup). The challenge for me now is to setup grub and the new /etc/fstab file so that I can do just like I did before - have dual boot with windows and suseLINUX. I am a bit confused, however, on what I need to do with the MBR. This drive was fresh out of the box, and the first thing I did with it was setup the partitions using kparted in yast. The next thing I did was use Casper in Windows (Vista) to clone the C and D drives. Then I mounted the rootb and homeb partitions in Suse and used rsync to copy my data over. I have read through the Novell cool solutions on configuring dual boot by booting from the dvd in a rescue shell. It talks about making changes to the menu.lst file (which I can do) and the device.map file, which I can also do. The last step says to run the command grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/hda which will install grub in /mnt/ (which is where the previous step has instructed you to mount the root directory of the drive you are installing it on). The problem is, this procedure was written for having just installed Windows on a SUSE linux machine, which overwrites the MBR. In my case, I have never actually installed windows on this drive - I just cloned the data of the key partitions, and since I cloned partition to partition, I am pretty sure the cloning tool didn't do anything with the MBR. So what should I do? should I go ahead and just run the grub-install command? Doesn't windows need to see something in the MBR that looks like its own code or something in order to work properly? or will that not matter when I install grub? [opensuse] I have some initial doubts

Hi, I am a windows migrant and many people here and there say to use Linux only. I agree because of its strong security features. However, my job is different and I am also not from a software field. Also, I get time very less to work in Linux but still I would give openSUSE a chance. I had Ubuntu installed (my sis just installed without any linux knowledge), that's good - working but someone (who works in linux itself) suggested me (over phone) to use openSUSE. I thought there must be some good reason. However, I didn't use Ubuntu also (no time and neither I knew linux). Now have made mind finally to go for it only. Some simple doubts are as follows: 1. If I install the latest version viz. 11.04, would it remain stable even after 8 months? (Since during 8 months, due to my job, I could not get the time to learn) and even if it changes, the basic functionality would remain the same....? 2. Can I install in CD version? But DVD is very common option. However, if I go for CD version (via torrent only), I don't think I would miss anything which come in DVD (wince we can update it later), is it like this...? 3. While booting with CD / DVD (whatever I pick in doubt no.2), would openSUSE replace my already installed Ubuntu or would it ask me for more/left space (which is NOT there). [PC is currently dual booted with Ubuntu LTS and Windows). How should I recognize (during installation) that it is replacing the entire Ubuntu space only and my windows partition remains intact... I hope my doubts would be cleared with the persons having great experiences here. I would be happy to know from their knowledge and learn from their experiences. I have been using k9copy for some time. Recently I tried to use it[1] but there was no audio on the backup of a new DVD I bought. I wrote the author (twice) but received no response. Today I learnt that the development of k9copy has been terminated (a notice on sourceforge) and there is also this entry in wikipedia: "Development of K9Copy was stopped in 2011 with the author citing the fragmentation of Linux as a major issue.". Does anyone know, please, of a replacement application for k9copy (to be used with, say, openSUSE)? [1] oS 32-bit 11.4 with KDE 4.7.x and kernel 3.1.x. I'm pretty sure there is but I'm asking to make sure .. I have a live system on sda and currently using rsync to backup to sdb (identical size disk). Also all partitions - including root and boot - are running reiserfs Can I add RAID 1 on the fly without disturbing my live system ? If so, can it be guaranteed ? And, could I be pointed to a procedure ? [opensuse] Question for the hard-disk management experts

Hi all. I'm messing around with my Dad's laptop computer - an Acer Extensta 5210 with an 80GB HDD, 1.5GB RAM and Windows 7 (yuk!). Windows 7 runs like treacle on this thing for some reason, and he has another (newer) Windows laptop anyway, so I'm installing oS 11.4 on it for him. The thing is that I want to dump the Windows partition and the Acer recovery partition to a portable drive so that I have a way back if he decides he wants to go back to Windows (which I don't think he will - his desktop machine runs oS 10.3 and he's been using that for ages, although only occassionally - it runs a local IMAP server for him so he can get the same mail on both laptops). Anyway, I've dumped the Windows partition (now 43GB) and the recovery partition (10GB, near enough) with dd if=/dev/sda<1,2> of=<image_name> to a terabyte USB drive, but my question is this. Should I backup the partition table from the original drive as well, to ease the process of restoring it back to its current state before I completely blow away these 2 partitions of the HDD in the laptop? What is the correct way to do this, apart from pen and paper? Assuming I do back it up to the USB drive, what would the process be to restore it? Sorry for the long'ish explanation, but context is sometimes useful. Hi I'm trying to tighten up my ldap server using TLS. My (certainly wrong) method was this: Server: I made a CA certificate and rootca giving the FQDN of the server as the common name for both certs.using yast. I copied YaST-CA.pem from /etc/ssl/certs to /etc/srv/htdocs. Back in Yast->LDAP Server I added TLS and restarted. Client: Yast->LDAP Client, and changed' Addresses of LDAP Servers' from 127.0.0.1 to my FQDN and downloaded YaST-CA.pem, checking the 'LDAP TLS/SSL' box in the 'Secure Connection' section. 1. What is the correct way of doing this? 2. Does this confirm that TLS is working? (all this just for one login?) Thanks. [opensuse] apt-cacher-ng, rpm and opensuse - caching of downloaded rpm's

I wanted someway of caching both debs and rpms but couldn't really find anything that was easy to use and setup. The user manual for apt-cacher-ng had a limited amount of info on using it with openSUSE but I initially couldn't get it to work. After some configuration tweaking I got it working and thought other people might be interested in using this as a solution. I'm also hoping other people with come forward with the solutions they have found that have worked for them (or improvements to what I've done). In my particular case apt-cacher-ng is running on a Debian server but that shouldn't make any difference. The changes I've made to the apt-cacher-ng configuration file acng.conf are as follows: VfilePattern = (^|.*?/)(Index|Packages\.bz2|Packages\.gz|Packages|Release| Release\.gpg|Sources\.bz2|Sources\.gz|Sources|release|index\.db-.*\.gz| Contents-[^/]*\.gz|pkglist[^/]*\.bz2|rclist[^/]*\.bz2|/meta-release[^/]*| Translation[^/]*\.bz2)|repomd.xml|xml.gz|content|media$ PfilePattern = .*(\.deb|\.rpm|\.dsc|\.tar\.gz\.gpg|\.tar\.gz|\.diff\.gz| \.diff\.bz2|\.jigdo|\.template|changelog|copyright|\.udeb|\.diff/.*\.gz| vmlinuz|initrd\.gz|(Devel)?ReleaseAnnouncement(\\?.*)?)$ The openSUSE changes I've made are to the repo files in /etc/zypp/repos.d. I've added the line: proxy=<ip of apt-cacher-server>:<port-of-apt-cacher-server-3142-by-default> at the bottom of each of the repo definition files. That was all that was needed. [opensuse] "noarch" listed in updater applet

I just upgraded to openSUSE 11.4 x86_64, haven't taken the time to add any repositories as yet. All updates in the Gnome updater applet are listed as "noarch." This was happening in 11.3, and was part of the reason I got around to upgrading. I couldn't figure out where these were coming from. rpm and zypper indicate I have the 64-bit apps installed. I can't find this in the bug tracker, is anyone else having the same problem? Can it be ignored, just using Yast or zypper to update? Basically it's just not the low level building block tools place to tell the user and the high level tools what use to make of a low level facility like the filesystem. The filesystems job is just to make as many things possible, as possible. What the user does with filenames is not the kernel or libc developers business. There are a very few unavoidable technical limits, and even those are really not limits just, things that would be silly and inconvenient to do very much, like embedding an escape code or a form feed in a file name. It's not convenient to type, and breaks a lot of common expectations and will break all but the most well coded programs, but there are also any number of unpredictable reasons why you might actually want to do it. There is nothing wrong, at that level, with naming a file or a directory with characters that just happen to be similar to what url's look like, any more than there is anything wrong with making file/directory names that happen to look like any other kinds of strings that are found in other contexts. In fact practically every file or directory name looks like something else that is not a file or directory. Your home directory is your name, the directory it lives in is the english word home, etc.. most names have some sort of meaning. A path that looks like a url is exactly like that, and support for that is specifically provided on purpose not by accident. What I'm trying, poorly, to get across is it's wrong to think in terms of what is commonly done, today, in ones own limited experience. Things like the shell and the filesystem and the libc and kernel functions that use them, these are all low level building blocks that everything else is built on and made out of. Low level pieces like that have no idea what high level uses will be made of them, and if they are to be useful, they need to have as few built in assumptions and limitations as possible. So that's why if an app wants to specially recognize urls and treat them differently, and give up the ability to handle a real local file that had the same characters, the app is free to do that because it's only the app that will be hurt by the short sightedness. The kernel, libc, other core libs, shell, and other core utils, all have to be a lot better than that and make no such assumptions. [opensuse] Interesting KDE 4.7 X server problems

Hi Folks, A few days ago I did a zypper dup against the KDE:/Release:/47/openSUSE_11.4/ repository and boy howdy, the pasta really it the fan! I initially had an ATI adapter and after the upgrade kdm would crash, as would xstart after Xorg was made suid root. After flailing around and making negative progress I decided to retire the whole desktop and made a new installation on a second system with an NVIDIA adapter. After the same update to 4.7 kdm was crashing again, as was X started manually. The Xorg.0.log log didn't have any "EE" errors, X just blinked out of existence. After more flailing about I discovered that X failed ONLY for users who listed tcsh as their default login shell! Bash users worked fine after issuing "startx". Kdm is still borked. So X has an issue when being started from the tcsh shell. Think this is worth filing a bug report? Anyone else seen it? [opensuse] Anticipating switch to 12.1 with dialup modem

I'm anticipating moving from oS 11.3 to oS 12.1 (with xfce) with a clean install in a month or so. A problem for me since jumping into GNU/Linux with oS 11.0 has been configuring my external, serial/USB, hardware modem. Editing config files directly and/or reconfiguring options in YaST, which didn't always take, and/or the GUI dialer has been needed. I've searched for information regarding the use of a dialup modem with 12.1 to no avail. Could someone, please, tell me where I could find the answers to the following questions, or should I wait until oS 12.1 is released before searching? 1.) Will the modem config file still be the ifcfg-modem0 and will it still be located in /etc/sysconfig/network/? 2.) Will the GUI for the dialer still be qinternet? I know about SSHFS. I know how to mount using FUSE and all that. This isn't what I'm asking about. I'm asking how to access a file on the command line without mounting. I can run $ scp localfile anton@remotesystem:remotefile What I want to do is that in a general sense, for example $ diff localfile anton@remotesystem:remotefile or $ tail anton@remotesystem:remotefile WITHOUT MOUNTING THE REMOTE FILE SYSTEM! Yes, I've googled and there is a tremendous amount of stuff abut mounting. I got tired of paging through it all. I noticed a new file while backing up and upon investigating here's what I've found under /etc/phpMyAdmin -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9912 Oct 27 10:51 config.inc.php -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9868 Oct 26 10:10 config.inc.php.rpmnew -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10031 Jul 4 23:12 config.inc.php.rpmsave system: openSUSE 11.4 x86_64 GNOME 2.32, all updates current phpMyAdmin is running fine I'm deducing the '.rmpsave' flavor is the one that YaST2 replaced during an earlier update (it was saved, not overwritten.) rpm shows phpMyAdmin was updated to 3.4.7-22.1 this morning at "10:51" which matches the active config file. This morning as i left my computer for work, kmail2 was busy synchronizing email folder inbox. At least after the whole day it is still synchronizing and I cannot get my pop3 email. I have been able to sent four emails to trash but nothing new comes in. If I look into the inbox under .cur the four deleted emails have gone. In the .new there are a whole list of emails of today. What means this. Why are these emails not shown. Should I delete something to get kmail working again? Trying to use one of my printers and in the printer setup I asked for printing a test page. The printer worked as if it was printing, moving the printersledge over the paper but it did not print anything. Inkt seems to be okay, no arning lights. The advice of the setup program was to /var/log/cups/error.log in order to find out what went wrong. This is what the log tells me but I cannot translate the text in something usable. Logically I sohuld conclude that the process 'dnsmasq' is not the DNS server process as indicated by the man page. DNSMASQ(8) DNSMASQ(8) NAME dnsmasq - A lightweight DHCP and caching DNS server. I have a problem, since I upgraded from 11.1 to 11.1 I can't get Multiple Monitors to work. I have checked openSUSE information DB etc without finding any solution to my problem. Is there anyone out there being able to help me. Hello all, I´m using thunderbird and I´m using e-mail alias. Like this one, which is showing you kdl(a)lhag.de.vu whereas I´m sending from a Hotmail-adress. This is normally working fine, so I want to do the same for my @o.o adress. You´ve got the account settings in thunderbird. I changed the e-mailadress from my hotmail one to my o.o one. I did the same with this mail adress. Here it working fine, whereas my on my o.o one the hotmail-adress is still shown. One of my users is trying to get a USB headphone set working on a box running the latest OpenSUSE. He's getting the following error message: "The Avahi Zeroconf service is not running. Please make sure that Avahi is installed and activated before starting the PulseAudio Device Chooser". I have no experience with Avahi, any idea what I need to do to get this working for him? The avahi-daemon service is running but avahi-dnsconfd is not, is that significant? I can't start it in any case, the error in the logs is: avahi-daemon: dbus_bus_request_name(): Connection ":1.1245" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.Avahi" due to security policies in the configuration file. [opensuse] problem with nvidia drivers for lenovo z570

I have just installed opensuse 11.4 on lenovo z570 and discovered from the log file of Xorg that drivers for the nvidia graphic card have not been found. Kde desktop starts anywa; it is also able to manage a secondary monitor, together with the built in one. So, my guess, linux is using the second graphic card, that is from intel. How to load the right nvidia drivers in kernel? I have tried to install modules from the opensuse repository, but no luck I have found the correct drivers from Nvidia company, but they require me to compile the kernel. Should the end-user compile the kernel, to exploit the nvidia graphic card? If so, any help? I have recently switched to IMAP, and I'm seeing a little weird issue with TB - occasionally I'll start replying to a mail, then get interrupted and save it in Drafts (or it happens automatically). WHen I resume a little later and send the mail, the copy in Drafts isn't deleted and sometimes the original mail isn't tagged as "replied to". I am still using TB2 (not sure if Lightning works with TB3). Ever since downgrading from 11.2 to 11.4 (given the number of problems I'm **still having** 5 months after the upgrade, it was the worst in my experience since suse 7.2), I've been unable to login to my system via remote desktop and xrdp. It kept claiming it was sending info to sesman, then login session failed.... I thought it was a passwd problem and tried to chase that down, as other apps have complained about authentication failures and login failures returned by PAM, but then they allow login... (?its a feature?) But turns out, this one is caused by xsesman finally figured how to run it interactively: [20111021-13:38:37] [CORE ] starting sesman with pid 14506 [20111021-13:38:37] [INFO ] listening... The machine is running openSUSE 11.3 on this desktop server and on a laptop. The desktop is configured as the PDC. The laptop is set as Not a Domain Controller. There are Windows XP machines on the domain also. The first time that a windows XP machine tries to access a share it was successful, but then if the winXP Explorer window is closed then re-opened it does not login anymore and the SAMBA server goes into waiting mode. The server got into this waiting mode last night and has been like this for 9hrs now. I will need to reboot the machine to get it out of this more or stop SAMBA with /etc/init.d/smb stop or just restart with /etc/init.d/smb restart This problem has occured since I installed openSUSE last January. Occasionally there was suitable functionality. I have been partly suspicious that this might be a networking problem since a some point I tried to get DNS running which is not working on the same server. Could a broken DNS cause problems with SAMBA? Hi everyone. Finally getting some sense out of Samba. The [homes] share is working fine. Users are prompted for a password when using Dolphin eg: smb://hh1/lynn2 BUT: Trying to access the [stuff] share prompts for a password but ignores the create mask 0777. The file is not created universal rw. What am I doing wrong? Also, can I have stuff+ without a login? I want it to work as a sort of Dropbox. Thanks. L x 11.4 with apparmor disabled. I'm using 1.5.10 and trying to create a filesystem (mkcromfs) based on about 29Gb on uncompressed data. I keep hitting an exception - "terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc' " - I've got plenty of disk-space and despite the error message, it's not a memory problem either. After seeing "unable to open listen socket for address ::1:631 - Address family not supported by protocol" in /var/log/cups/error_log, Google told me goto http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/install-boot-log… and http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:GDI_Printers to figure out why I can't print with my Canon GDI, but instead of help I just see the incompetent results of incompetent site styles: http://fm.no-ip.com/SS/opensuseforumsmess01.jpg Can someone please fix the openSUSE web sites to use browser defaults instead of mousetype so that this kind of mess doesn't keep happening? I've been trying off & on in 11.4 & 12.1 since last winter to make my IP printer work, but it refuses to print except for the YaST2 test page, or PDFs from Okular. All other apps tried, and this is on multiple puters, fail to even wake up the printer, much less print. Until the last driver update, the printer would wake up, but display an error instead of printing. Apps tried are mostly various Gwenview, Firefox, SeaMonkey & Konqueror versions. Months ago I filed https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=683476 and later http://www.cups.org/str.php?L3916 in hopes of eventually being able to print in something newer than 11.2. http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/Cups/gx280/121/ contains logs from today's attempts on one machine with 12.1B1. I opened the printer's IP in Konqueror, but nothing there seems able to help with this. IPV6 is disabled in YaST, and cmdline includes ipv6.disable=1. /etc/hosts includes 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost. Hi, I would like to make the wireless lan more manageable, here at the office, so I'm researching radius. It seems freeradius has many possibilities, so I'm a bit lost. I didn't find information on a low technical level to learn the possibilities of freeradius to setup a wireless lan. Does anyone have some references ? Does anyone know of documents referring to the interactions between the devices when setting up a wireless link with radius ? Then I could better know where to look if anything goes wrong. I've recently been getting occasion relaying denied messages from my mail server (in my own house, no less, seems a bit abusive, shouldn't take that from a machine, pull it's plug or maybe it's memory chips one at a time....)... But I think they are related to these oddities in the /etc/hosts.allow Oct 18 17:38:15 Ishtar sshd[19952]: warning: /etc/hosts.allow, line 73: host name mismatch: Athenae != (null) (::ffff:192.168.3.140) Um....Athenae has 2 interfaces, one at 192.168.3.12, and another at 192.168.3.140. Isn't the ::ffff: some sort of ipv6 compatibility address (that I thought had been abandoned?)... Why is it seeing my addr as such athenae isn't USING IP6 addessing?!? (Athenae is a Windows 7 machine with the ipv6 stack turned off). It's talking to a server Ishtar which does have a an ipv4 and ipv6 (that mostly goes unused except for testing).... it looks like a scope link address (/64) but it looks like it with the local hosts, it's **sometimes** interpreting them as 48 bit hosts. [opensuse] editing libreoffice file on samba share

If I open a samba share in Dolphin: smb://hh1/stuff and then click to open a libreoffice file: 1. It opens a cached copy of the file from /var/tmp/kdecache-user to edit. Saving the file saves the cached copy, not the original file. 2. No lock file is created. 3. When I leave libre office it tells me the file has been changed and do I want to upload it. Hopeless for sharing the file as anyone can work on the cached copy It works as expected if the file is on an NFS share. If the file is open, subsequent clicks give a read only copy and you can see the dot file created as a lock. I think the problem is that Samba does not accept the characters used to name the lock file but articles on this are misleading. Does anyone know a workaround or a fix? 11.4 server and client. Hello all, Today, working with my Firewall and adding vlans, the system hangs completely after a while. Removing the Vlans, all is working as usual. I have the Live CD version of the latest pre-release version of openSUSE 12.1. Everything seems to work, except I can't get KNetworkManager to work with the WiFi (Realtek rtl8192ce module). I can get it to create a wlan0, if I use the traditional "ifup" method. However, when I try to use KNetworkMangager, I can't even enable WiFi. When I click on "Enable", it quickly disables it again. Suggestions? Hi all, I have a NFS mount (options were inserted by YaST): <server>:/home/User_Data/<user> on /home/<user>/Data type nfs (rw,relatime,vers=3,rsize=131072,wsize=131072,namlen=255,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,mountaddr=192.168.1.1,mountvers=3,mountport=33365,mountproto=udp,local_lock=none,addr=192.168.1.1) I have all applications use this mount for data, including Thunderbird's .thunderbird directory soft linked to it. They all work happily over a 802.11bgn mixed mode. The workstation is on a the LAN of a TLink with 802.11n mode and with a WDS connection to the other TLink. All applications work instantaneously with saving and loading data over this WLan. I installed M$-Word 2003 with wine-1.3.12 (with recommended Vista bottle) on opensuse 11.4, with all the latest updates. When I save a document, it takes 3 minutes before I can work on the document again. Is there something wrong with the mount or the Wine config? The NFS mount works for all other apps, but not so well for Wine with Word. Is it a Wine issue? :-) Dreiel Incidentally, I cannot use OO-org, because there is no Outline tool in OO-org. Hey guys, I want to automount the /usr/local directory from my fileserver (SLES 11 SP1) on my desktop (OpenSUSE 11.4). This is the /etc/exports file on server1: /usr/local xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(rw,sync) This is the /etc/auto.master on desktop1: #+auto.master /usr/local /etc/auto.local --timeout=300 --ghost And the /etc/auto.local file on desktop1: * -fstype=nfs,rw,nosuid,soft server1.where.ever:/usr/local But I cannot cd into anything under /usr/local after restarting all the daemons, I just get 'No such file or directory'. Where am I going wrong? I don't use LDAP. Hello, I wonder, if there is any UID and GID reference list (preferable in the form of /etc/passwd or /etc/group) available. The background is, that from time to time I get inconsistencies in my /etc/passwd and /etc/group files. One example: Currently the Smolt cron job on my openSUSE 11.4 does not work, because the cron job user "smolt" does not exist. I can not find any "useradd" and "groupadd" commands in the RPM scripts of Smolt. So reinstalling Smolt does not add the missing user. Now I tried to find the correct Smolt entries in a fresh openSUSE 11.4 installation. I found these lines in openSUSE 12.1 Beta 1: /etc/passwd:smolt:x:105:106:user for smolt:/usr/share/smolt:/sbin/nologin /etc/group:smolt:!:106: But the UID 105 and the GID 106 is already taken by user "haldaemon" and group "polkituser" on my openSUSE 11.4 system: haldaemon:x:105:107:User for haldaemon:/var/run/hald:/bin/false polkituser:!:106: I think, the UID and GID numbers are dynamically chosen. But is this really ok in all cases? It would be nice, if there is a list of system users and system groups. Other systems have such lists. For instance FreeBSD has the /usr/ports/UIDs (for system UIDs) and /usr/ports/GIDs (for system GIDs). Or is is really safe to use dynamic UID and GID values for system users? Dear All, I would like to try and install BURG on my machine. To that end, I am looking for a source rpm package of BURG. It doesn't mater if it is not the latest version, I just want to take a look at the spec file and use it to build mine. I found no trace of a BURG rpm either in the normal repository or the Build Service. I was wondering if someone can provide me with one. Even if it's not an OpenSUSE ntaive package (say, it comes from Fedora or Mandriva), I would still be happy. Of course once I finish my work I will make the rpm available to anyone on the Build Service. Can someone help me, please? Hi, It seems Evolution 3.0.3 is suffering of a bug when you are attempting to write a new email: the draft window is opened and randomly during your writing you can notice a message asking for save draft, descart changes or keep writing. This is first time I get this issue and it appears both with Gnome3 and LXDE. Dunno if it is an isolated problem on my system or someone else noticed it. I'm using openSUSE 11.4 x86_64. I mount this share on a client: [users] comment = home folders inherit acls = Yes path = /home read only = No using this: mount -t cifs //192.168.1.2/users /home -o rw,setuid I then login as a user on the client authenticated via ldap. No problem. It takes me to the mounted folder and I can see my files. When I create a file it creates it as owner root:root. Not what I want! How can I create files on the mount as user:group no matter who logs in? Thanks. Since today the synchronization of the folders runs at high speed. The synchronization took minutes before and was stuck somewhere for no visible reason but now it is racing through all the folders. I'm running 11.4 up to date and LibreOffice 3.4.2: Every time I edit an .html file with borders on the whole table, it initially turns off the borders. Make my changes to the data I have to turn the borders back on and save the file. This sounds like a bug, so I would appreciate someone else test this and file a bug if necessary. Hi, maybe you guys can help me on this, I have lived with it for a couple of years. I am using Thunderbird as the email program. I have a mailing list of emails for an organization for which I write the newsletter. Each month I mail out the newsletter, and I get back a notification that a particular email address fails to be delivered because it doesn't exist. When I type the address into the search box in Thunderbird's address window, the address doesn't exist in my address list. I have checked every email address in the list of addresses, and the address isn't included in the list. Where can I find trustworthy source for a rootkit detection? I have a series of data directories that I need to regularly transfer back and forth between 2 computers. On computer 1, all the files are in an ext4 partition. I have formatted a memory stick with ext4 format as the means of transfer. I use rsync to copy the files and directories from computer 1 to the stick. On computer 2 I have half the files in an ext4 partition, and the other half of the files are in an NTFS partition (by necessity). These files have to remain in the NTFS partition on computer 2. When I try and use rsync to copy the files from the stick to computer 2, the files that are supposed to be copied to the NTFS partition fail with the following error: rsync: mkstemp "/windows/D/CLAware Inbox/Tagalog/ThruTheBible/..directory.zabln8" failed: Operation not permitted (1) rsync: mkstemp "/windows/D/CLAware Inbox/Tagalog/ThruTheBible/.TTBR2010708.mp3.VUNaHR" failed: Operation not permitted (1) I know that this probably has to do with the fact that NTFS doesn't recognize owners and permissions, but I still need to be able to copy these files along with all the others. Anyone have any suggestions on how to accomplish the same rsync type functionality in this situation without having to login as root? When i run the script as root it copies the files without a problem. Thanks to anyone that has any suggestions! Hello, I have to manage an "eps" file and my present goal is to extract any element to have it at hand separately (to build a new svg). I do this in inkscape (only application that opens the eps correctly). I can select the object I want, but to make it alone, I have to paste it in a new drawing. Many objects are small. Hi all, when I change the IMAP mail folder in kmail, I get this nice green SuSE Screen which says "retrieving folder contens" and kmail starts downloading headers. If there a way to tell kmail a) NOT to show this screen but jut go to the folder view? b) To download headers already when/if the IMAP server reports that there has been some change going on in the folder? [opensuse] Firefox 7.0 on 11.4 - how to get mouseover URL back in status bar??

Guys, Wolfgang In FF 7.0 on 11.4, when I hover over a link, the URL displays in the bottom of the browser window instead of in the normal bottom status bar. This is horrible. The contrast of the URL in the bottom left corner of the active window is barely noticeable. I need to figure out how to get this to display back in the bottom status bar where I can see it. [opensuse] (Strange) Apache Virtual Host Behaviour

Hi all, So, I setup Apache on my OpenSUSE 11.4 server at home, wanting to experiment with several php and perl apps (hence the Virtual Hosting config), when I found some strange behaviour with Virtual Hosting. I have a default configuration in Apache which I can access using hostorig.domain.tld (not the real name of course). I create a Virtual Host, host1.domain.tld and put an index.html inside. It works, so far so good. Ok, now, I add another Virtual Host, host2.domain.tld, and things start to get strange. When I open a browser and go to "http://hostorig", I get "http://host1" instead. "http://host1" still points to the right place, and "http://host2" point to the right place too. A bit of Googling around leads me to a site that says that the order of the <VirtualHost> stanzas is significant. If Apache does not understand which Virtual Host the user is requesting, it will default to the first <VirtualHost> declaration. Now, in OpenSUSE, the order of the Virtual Hosts is not so clear because they are all contained in separate .conf files inside /etc/apache2/vhost.d. If I wanted one of the Virtual Hosts here to be the "first" Virtual Host declared, what do I do? Since this is a home setup, it's not really that important, but it is annoying me like crazy. If anyone here can give me any information on why all this is happening and how I can setup a Virtual Host that Apache will "default" to when it doesn't understand the destination (or just setup Virtual Hosts better), please help! All, Very intentional top-post. In K-9 I created the below email as a response to a question on the factory list. (I only use K-9 for posting to mailing lists, so not that often.) In K-9's email listing, the below appears as one e-mail and all is good. But when I change to the google provided gmail app, the below shows up as 3 different emails. The first has about a third of the below edited in. Then the second has that third, plus a third more. And the third one is the below final email. I only hit send once and again, K-9 shows it as only one email. What is going on? All, Wolfgang R., A recent FF 7.0.1 crash forced my back through my preferences to set up my home pages again. For some reason when it crashed, it lost the preference?? Looking at the Preferences -> Startup -> Show my XYZ setting, there needs to be an option to: "Show my app tabs" which would allow FF to start with your pinned tabs as your home pages shown on startup. I do like the "use current pages" option that allows multiple pages to be specified separated by a pipe, but if you pin the pages you want to open and then select "use current pages" FF reopens your pinned apps AND also opens a second copy of your pinned apps 'unpinned' as well. There is no need to open 2 sets of the same pages (pinned and unpinned). Wolfgang, you hear of anything in the work that would fix that? -- David C. Updating with a new kernel always shows the text that it looking for the old greeter text and decides, it is not there. How and where can edit a greeter text. Hi All I am using dovecot 2.0.13 and kmail 1.13.6. I'm having difficult accessing the inbox on the email server. If I log out of my account and then back in again, I can start kmail and access my inbox. A few minutes later there is a message that kmail has lost connection with the server and the only way back in to the inbox is to log out and in again. I have my mobile phone connected to the server and it seems to have no problem accessing the inbox. So I believe that it is something to do with kmail. I am using tls. When I telnet to port 143, it connects and says that the server is ready. However, in kmail (which is set to port 143) it just hangs with the message "Retrieving Folder Contents Please wait . . ." Oh and one other thing, the server and my desktop account are running on the same machine. Has anyone got any ideas what is wrong? I'd be grateful for any assistance. Hi all. I run a local mail server with a fairly standard setup: Fetchmail -> sendmail ->procmail -> spamd -> Maildir -> dovecot IMAP. Everything worked fine until around 1345 local time Sunday. Ever since then, fetchmail has been dumping all mail into /var/spool/mail/<username> and there it stays. The rest of the chain isn't firing. procmail is configured to write to a log file in my home directory (pm.log) and that is not being written. Nothing has been written to /var/log/mail since August 28th (when I upgraded to oS 11.4) so that is no help. I have tried logging out of KDE and even restarting the machine (which I rarely do - uptimes of >180 days are not uncommon) but to no avail. I'm completely stumped as to why it was working fine and then suddenly stopped with no intervention. I haven't even installed any updates in the last week or so. I'd appreciate any pointers as to where to look next. Fetchmail is working fine, as I said, but nothing gets past /var/spool/mail/<username>. When it was working fine, nothing went into this directory, let alone stayed there. What has broken and why? [opensuse] k3b and CDDB lookup question

I'm recording all my albums into mp3s using audacity. To make a long story short, I am using k3b to convert the wavs to mp3s. I am able to retrieve some CDDB info with k3b but many come up empty. k3b is configured to use gnudb.gnudb.org for CDDB lookup. Every single time k3b comes up empty, if I then attempt to use kid3 and point it at gnudb.gnudb.org also, it finds them just fine. Why does k3b come up empty while kid3 doesn't. I'm running SuSE-11.4 and k3b is k3b-2.0.2-6.9.1.i586. Thanks in advance for any pointers. Hello, I have set frame-title-format for my emacs like this: (set 'frame-title-format '("%b -- " invocation-name "@" system-name)) This works so far, as it shows me the names of the emacs buffers in the KDE panel. But after a short time, the names in the KDE panel fall back to "emacs(a)my.host.name", omitting the "%b -- " component of the setting. Whenever an emacs frame is re-displayed (either by clicking on the window, or by clicking on the icon in KDE's panel, or by simply switching virtual desktops), the buffer name comes back again. But after a while, it disappears again. The end result is that the buffer name is not displayed most of the time. Being one of the folks who tries to do the Subject, I recently ran across an old thread on the list which confirmed most of my experience with it, but mentioned that Yast (in the installer mode) might not be putting grub, etc. on both disks' MBR or /boot. After some web-digging, I tried the following: grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,0) (hd1,0) Can someone competent in the matter confirm for me that the above does indeed mean that both disks in the array have had a working grub written to both disks, and therefore, in the event of the failure of one drive, the other is indeed bootable into a working system? If not, why not and what should I do to "fix" the matter. TIA. I downloaded a program that I needed off the internet and the installation program was a script file with the extension .sh. The instructions from the developer said to run the script on a command line by typing the command: ./<filename> I thought (mistakenly) that I could run any shell script by typing the command . <filename> (with a space between the dot and the filename). So I tried to run it that way, and I got the error "cannot execute binary file". However, when I followed the developer's instructions and typed in ./<filename>, the script executed perfectly and installed the program. So my question is, what is the difference between running a script file with the command <dot><space><filename>, for example "#> . myscript.sh" and running it with <dot><slash><filename>, for example "#> ./myscript.sh"? Guys, I'm having problems with cinelerra. I have a simple 8 second sequence of 4 images I need to render. Cinelerra will not render with ffmpeg, but the mpeg2enc pipe works -- what gives? [opensuse] installation error

Started to intall 11.4 on a new laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. Installation from DVD downloaded (MDsum checked). After the various choices of partioning and software (accepted defaults for partionning and mostly for software), when installation begins, it stops almost immediately with: failure occurred during following action: creating volume /dev/sd7. System error code was: -1007 sda7 was to be the swap; sda8 root (ext4), and sd9 home (ext4). sda1 is Windows/C; sda2 is Windows/D. I suspect the reason for using 7, 8, and 9 is that this is the third try, and that the first one set up 3,4 and 5. The Windows partition appears to have been correctly shrunk, and Windows will still boot. The installation suggests these three linux partitions be set up (and gives me the chace to alter them), so my guess is that there is space there but unpartitioned. When the error is presented, it asks if I want to go ahead anyway: so far I have said no. Hi all, I need a serious Notebook/Laptop with OpenSUSE 11.4. At the moment I use MacBook with Snow Leopard. I tried Lion, a disaster. OSX is also not as usable as openSUSE for serious System Administration in the IT environment. Apple has excellent hardware! The incompatibilities of it's FS with the more modern ext3/4 FS's is a pain. openSUSE reads OSX's FS without problems, but it is a pain the other way around. I was considering the newest MacBook Pro, but it has limitations if used with openSUSE dual boot with OSX. I use VirtualBox with openSUSE and Win's if needed. There are other manufacturers that has excellent hardware, and work flawlessly with openSUSE. I do not need OSX really, but it comes with a Mac. Other considerations are that most Notebook Companies use manufacturers like FoxConn that has highly questionable work ethics toward it's employees; this was lately exposed by an Apple manufacturing assembly line. The problem is that most source their hardware components from FoxConn, even Dell sold it's Irish plant to them. I read on Toshiba's English Japanese website that they keep the highest ethical practices in human rights, but they 'urge' their supply chain manufacturers to adhere to the same standards. Which companies do keep such standards. Now, who has been occupying the same questions lately. What was your conclusions. Which hardware has the highest compatibility with openSUSE (also maybe RH, Deb, C-OS) and keep to the minimal ethical standards? I was looking at something like the Toshiba X770 range, with dual SSD HD's and Full HD Video. It should have the same or better standard than the MacBook Pro 17". Money is of lesser importance, because it gets written off by the business in three years. It must also be usable for multimedia and CAD type of applications, and have Raid 1 possibility with two SSD's. [opensuse] enigmail fails since pinentry does not fire up

Hi there! Since yesterday evening, enigmail stopped working. (I removed my KDE DE just before that and installed newer boost libs but I don't see how could affect my problem). For some reasons the pinentry-gtk-2 does not fire up anymore (still installed). So the symptoms are that thunderbird seems to do nothing after pressing "Send" and then after a while I get the message: Send operation aborted. Key 0xDBABD766 not found or not valid. Hi, Im trying to give all of my hosts multiple fixed addresses, So if one host is (accidentily) repluged from one lan to another lan, i will still get predictable results. Avvording to the dhcpd.conf info that should be possible: "If it is desirable to be able to boot a DHCP or BOOTP client on more than one subnet with fixed addresses, more than one address may be specified in the fixed-address declaration, or more than one host statement may be specified matching the same client." So i tried at my 11.4 box multiple addresses in a single host declaration. The deaemon responds however with: dhcpd: /var/lib/dhcp//etc/dhcpd.conf line 18: Only one fixed address declaration per host. Any comment at the unexpected behaviour? [opensuse] Major boot problem

Hi all, The other day I switched on my computer in the morning and waited for the oS 11.4 to start (the other system on it is Win XP). The bootsplash screen disappearad and then lines of text were printed on the screen. After a while a prompt appeared telling me to give my root password. I typed it, but it was not accepted. Repeated the boot sequence a couple of times, but to no avail. Finally I chose Failsafe from the GRUB menu and somehow I could get some response from the system. It turned out that I was in / directory and nothing else was mounted. This morning I found the 11.4 install CD and thught I would refresh or reinstall the system. Refresh did no change, I still could not boot into the system. The fresh instaal insisted to format even the /home directory, which I really do not want. Additionaly It told me that it is not posibble to mount some volumes - there are 3 HDDs in the computer. The only thing I want to preserve is my home directory. Could anybody help me how to advance? But as the image is usually accompanied by a link to Portal:1x.x, and that would need updating anyway, this is less useful. Portal:12.1 exists. Just curious. Hello! I'm currently trying to get the aoutomount-feature on opensuse 11.4 running. LDAP/Kerberos/NFS4 is running fine, but unfortunately I cant get the aoutomount running. Whenever automunt runs, I get the following error: "Syntax error in map near [ home -fstype=nfs4 herkules.test.com: ]" In LDAP I have set the entries below - unfortunately I can't find a good documentation. [opensuse] Gnome 3.2 - How can I completely disable Suspend?

I've downloaded and installed from the openSUSE-based Gnome 3.2 live disk. Laptop model is Dell XPS M1330 Video is NVidia GeForce 8400M GS Kernel ver is 2.6.37.6-0.7-default x86_64 1 - Nouveau driver TANKS when system goes to suspend. Comes back with black screen and mouse pointer. Must ctrl-alt-backspace to reset X-server. 2 - NVidia driver repository driver ver 275.21 driver TANKS when system goes to suspend. Desktop comes back, but is completely frozen except for the mouse pointer. Must ctrl-alt-backspace to reset X-server. 3 - NVidia's latest driver ver 280.13 causes random lock-ups. Completely unusable. As I have been perusing forums for multiple distributions, I've found that this laptop model apparently has issues with suspend. How can I completely disable suspend? I recently bought a Sharkoon SATA Quickport Duo <http://www.sharkoon.com/?q=en/content/sata-quickport-duo-v2>, which is attached to an eSATA port on a SiliconImage SATA RAID card. I have used this card in the past as an attachment for JBOD SATA drives, which are then assembled into a software linux RAID1 array, but now I just want to use it to connect the above device to the mainboard. The system will only see one drive at a time. If I populate both drive bays in the Sharkoon Quickport, then neither drive is mountable. The Sharkoon information says that two HDD operation via eSATA is only possible when the eSATA controller supports Port Multiplier. The SiliconImage website says that the card, which uses their si3124 chip, supports Port Multiplier functionality. <http://www.siliconimage.com/products/product.aspx?id=27>. My kernel 2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop has the sata_sil24 module loaded. Can anyone suggest a reason why I'm not able to activate the Port Multiplier function? Am I missing something obvious? Hi, I've got an application installed from OpenSuse's repository which is in $PATH. Recently I installed a newer version as binary in /opt. Now I'd like to remove the bin-directory of the older version and replace it with the newer version under /opt. I know I could add the newer bin to $PATH in /etc/bash.bashrc.local but I rather like to remove the old one. I'd like to keep the old binary at least for now so it's no solution to delete the package and let YaST clean up $PATH. [opensuse] OpenSuSE 11.4: E17: menu: YaST (Administraitor Settings) FAILS

OK now while I don't like yast's package management interface, and thus use zypper, there are times when I need yast or yast2 to do something else... Now If I understand correctly yast2 is supposed to be the gui version of yast that required X and yast is the curses equivalent that can be run in a virtual console such as tty1 without X... But while I'm glad that there is a curses equivalent, I find the gui version less confusing. Ever since kde4 proved incompatible with my brain, the only gui's I use are E17 and E16 Or under extreme duress xfce... And by default, I use E17 And if it matters I boot to runlevel 3 and use startx when/if I'm ready for a gui. Though admittedly, most of the time my first user command is startx... E17's applications menu only mentions yast once. And that is at menu->applications->System->YaST (Administrator Settings) Since there isn't a separate choice for yast2 I would tend to assume that the menu choice would actually point at the gui yast2, but I can't prove it. You see when I select yast from the menu, I get a small popup that prompts me for the password. I don't know if it's based on the sudo settings or not but since my sudoers file has "targetpw" on the defaults line it shouldn't matter because it should want root's password. Which appears to be true because if I use my own the pop-up simply exits immediately. But if I enter my root password, some text output that looks like the stdout and/or stderr I'd expect in an xterm if I call a gui application from it. But this text scrolls by so fast I can't read any of it before "Poof" the popup window closes. And yast2 doesn't start. I guess it's possible that it's trying to start the curses version of yast, but in that case it should be opening an xterm to run it in, and that doesn't happen either. I've tried starting yast2 from an "xterm" (actually a "konsole" window, {konsole being one of the few KDE apps I still use in spite of kde4}): I've done this in three ways with different results: su -c /sbin/yast2 which yields over 300 lines of stderr (see http://pastebin.com/AgwCap3W ) and no yast of any kind... sudo /sbin/yast2 which actually starts the curses version in the current konsole window... But if I open a root shell first: su - yast2 I get only about 9 lines of stderr (see http://pastebin.com/CwJtbKLS ) before the gui yast2 control center does actually open a functional window. This bothers me because I much prefer to use either: 'su -c "command arglist"' or 'sudo command arglist' to start an admin level gui than to leave an open root shell that I might forget to close hanging around. And of course because there should be a working yast menu choice in the gui menu on an OpenSuSE system, shouldn't there??? Can anybody tell me how to fix this? I have tried to install the beta version. Unfortunately all I get after the installer copied all the files and tried to reboot: Starting YaSt2 error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock (No such file or directory). Therefore installation does not finish and the system does not work at all... ref: opensuse 11.4 Asus P8P67 Pro mobo with Atheros 3010 chip. Problem: Unable to create BT device. Chip is recognized. Ubuntu CD works well. If first, I load Ubuntu then I do a soft reboot to opensuse, then everything works well. The Atheros chip that is in this mobo does not have a flash memory therefore the firmware has to be loaded after a hard reboot. It seems openseuse is unable to load the firmware while ubuntu is not. If Ubuntu loads the firmware and I do a soft reboot to opensue then is OK. Opensuse: 1. has the correct firmware in /lib/firmware/ath3k-1.fw 2. has the firmwareloader /usr/src/linux-2.6.37.6-0.7/drivers/bluetooth/ath3k.c 3. It recognizes the chip # dmesg | grep Bluetooth [ 11.843197] Bluetooth: Atheros AR30xx firmware driver ver 1.0 4. It does not create the device # hcitool dev Devices: Any ideas where should I go? Guys, This is baffling... another rankinism... I get that this is a carriage return in the file and it is usually associated with dos/unix editing of files, but I can't tell if I'm causing it or if it is just dvgrab. If I output sdtout/stderr to a terminal all looks good, but when I check the log file, I have two spaces between every line. Other than me doing something dumb, it looks like it is just dvgrab spitting out 'a carriage return + 80 spaces + another carriage return' with every dv clip it processes... If it is dvgrab, then is there a way I can have bash strip this info before it gets written to the files? The terminal does it by default evidently, because the output I get from stdout/stderr looks correct in konsole, so can I pipe the output through something (hopefully lighter than sed) that would strip it before I pipe it to tee? -- David C. [opensuse] Where to get Firefox 5?

Hi fellow foxers; Does anyone know where I can get an rpm for the REAL Firefox 5? Every link I've followed brings me FF 6 even when the rpm name says it's ver 5. Want to revert back to version 5.
