Wireless PCMCIA in a Desktop: Will Linux Recognize it?

I would be thankful for answers to some questions: about wireless cards 1) Re: Wireless Ethernet Cards for Desktops. How does one get Linux to recognize an ethernet card (e.g. a wireless card) that is not on the list of supported cards shown by YAST2? 2) Re: Installing a PCMCIA card onto a Desktop. I understand that one can install a wireless PCMCIA ethernet card in a desktop with the appropriate PCI card. Is there any problem with Linux's recognizing the card under these circumstances? Under Linux 8.0, is there any problem with recognition and use of a wireless PCMCIA? I read the relevant HowTo, but that installed under Debian and I think (guess) an older kernel. (Newbie alert) Zip drive confusion.

Hi all, I have just tried to access my USB 250 Zip drive in SUSE 7.3 Pro, only to receive the following message: "Could not mount device. The reported error was mount /dev/sda4: unknown device." I have checked and ziptool is installed, I have a Zip icon on my desktop, but obviously, something needs to be configured somewhere. I read /usr/share/doc/packages/ziptool/README, but there wasn't any help as far as I could decipher. Any ideas? Cheers, Brian

Hi, Last night i posted message asking on help to aviod my system shutdown by it self. Well put statement suggested in lilo.con in the appriate localtion suggested but jut know the system in question just power off again for no good reason. I am running SuSe 7.1 Kernel 2.4.13 Mantel RPM. 512 MB RAM 10 GB (ReiserFS / ext2 /boot) Matorx Millimum 2 MB (It's work machine ) D-Link 538 TX+ 10/100 MB What noticed this occurs when memory drop below 350 MB the system shutdown when i am going in to X/Gnome. What i find strange is i am running RH 7.1 + Kernel 2.4.13 Kernel.org with exact same MB/RAM/HD/NIC etc.. and all it well with it. I have had this problems since kernel 2.4.0 . I have checked RAM with memtest and it check out i have switched ram from RH 7.1 Box with this one done memory test as well it check out but still occurs. I have always love SuSe but seriously thinking of calling it quit's with this distro. I never any problems with other distro/kernels acting like this. Any ideas :) Alex :)

[SLE] Hard Drive follies

I upgraded my system and along with the new board, processor, memory, and all that I bought a 30 gig hard drive. I could not get fdisk to see more than 7.9 gigs of it, even though I did all the standard things like flash the bios, use the installation diskette from the manufacturer, etc. The only way I was able to partition the drive was to use the Windows 95 fdisk, with all its limitations including the one from marketing which limits to one primary partition per drive. Eventually I partitioned a 15 gig primary and a 15 gig extended, then changed the type, formatted and gave mount points in YaST. Now there is a 15 gig primary, a Windows extended, with a Linux logical as the only partition there. Cripes. [SLE] sound problems

allo I have been having very annoying problems trying to play audio CDs. I am using SuSE 6.2 and have compiled OSS and SB16 drivers into my kernel (2.2.14pre15) I can play mp3's fine but not CDs I have tried using a mixer to mute and then un-mute the CD player - to no effect I have used different CD playing software, cdp and workman. Neither worked. The CD is read and actually played by both aps but no sound comes out of the speakers. I used to be able to play CDs back in the days of Win32 (ugh) - so I knwo that it is possible. [SLE] sound problems - in addition

I just plugged some headphones into the cdrom and I can certainly hear the funky tunes pouring out of the cd player but nothing gets to the speakers... the little grey cable that connects the audio out to the soudn card is well and truly ther and it works fine under Win32 as I said... hope this helps to solve the prob.. -A Abhinav Keswani wrote: > > allo > > I have been having very annoying problems trying to play audio CDs. Clock skewed

Hi all When I try to recompile the kernel I get a message saying the clock is skewed and the build may not work. What does this mean and how can I fix it ? I am running SuSe 6.1 with kernel 2.2.5. Thanks Mike

[SuSE Linux] Call-back with SuSE 6.1

Hi, everybody I'm new to Linux. Installed SuSE a couple of weeks ago and now trying to get some functionality. I have trouble setting up call-back (SuSe 6.1<---> ISP's NT Server 4.0) with optional number (fixed as well). Tried to use wvdial, but with no success (it dials OK, but then seems like doesn't know what to do next). Can it do the trick? I feel that maybe some scripting could help me. Could anybody provide me with necessary directions (or direct to the information) for making a flexible script and what software I need installed or some other approach? (I've read PPP-HOWTO but don't know if the information it contains applicable to current SuSE version; it doesn't say anything about wvdial). One more thing. Is it necessary to set the proper values in "resolv.conf" and host.conf? Some other files? I actually tried to find the answer and found a sample ppp.conf with brief instructions on settings (from Free-BSD as I remember), but can I use it with SuSE 6.1 and how? Are there any rpms for qt 1.40 for Suse 5.2 yet? I've tried to compile the source and get errors after about 10 minutes into make. Someone better step up and lay out standard libraries for diff. linux distro's or else linux is bound to fail. ( as a newbie to linux<about two monthes> i'm already disgusted with every program asking for a trip to the ftp world for another lib file.) I'd like to see distributions let you upload your source and config file.......compile your binary and send it back to you. Maybe i'm just wishing for to much from linux...but joe smo will NEVER download a new lib everytime he wants to try out a new program. YaST presented me a list of drivers. With this in mind, are you able to get your system booted up and get YaST running? 2) If YaST is indeed running, does it ask you what type of CDROM you have? The proprietary Creative Lab CDROM drive is a Matsushita/Panasonic CDROM drive and there is a driver specifically for it. It looks like SuSE supports it as I see a reference to this CDROM drive on the bottom of page 194 in the SuSE 5.2 manual. That section of the manual deals with all of the configuration settings for a Linux kernel. Obviously that section isn't any help until you have a working Linux system installed and you want to configure and compile your own kernel. This leads me to believe that SuSE must support this CDROM and it's just a matter of getting YaST to load the appropriate CDROM driver I think. 3) I went back to the original set of kernel driver modules from my original SuSE 5.2 install. This has a kernel version of 2.0.33 and it does include the Sound Blaster CDROM driver. The name of the driver module is "sbpcd.o" 4) I did run YaST and I went into the menu option where I selected a CDROM drive. I looked at the list of CDROMs that are available and the "Sound Blaster Pro", "sbpcd", is listed in the list of CDROM drives. I believe that's the driver you want. [SuSE Linux] Busy modem

I hope this isn't a repeat message. I mistakenly sent to this list from the wrong account earlier. I apologize if you've already seen this. I have just installed 5.3 and just can't get connected to the web. I installed PPP and SLIP support in the kernel, compiled it correctly and set it in place. It boots nominally showing successful implementation of both SLIP and PPP. I used YaST to set up the PPP operation, putting in all the details about my ISP as best I know how. What happens when I try to use Kppp to check my modem is a message that it is busy. If I try to use the generic email client on the taskbar, it locks up and I have to restart the KDE session. The manual is really very good about PPP setup and I have followed it as closely as I can. Can anyone suggest an error I may have committed? Thanks. An elaboration on the subject line: I have a Intel Netport print server with a HP 6MP (PS) printer. I have SuSE 5.1. After reading thru the man page for a2ps and the docs on apsfilter as well using apsfilter with network printers on SuSE SDB, I have a working setup with a couple of minor settings that I have not been able to figure out as follows: 1. "a2ps -l -2 -nH <filename>" produces no output on stdout. Per the a2ps man page, a2ps is supposed to output to stdout w/o the -P <dest printer> OR pipe to lpr tool. Instead, I notice a job is queued to the "network" printer and it prints there shortly. Can't figure out why a print job gets spooled when I don't give any printer destination OR pipe it to lpr. In fact the following command line from the a2ps man page "a2ps -l -2 -nH infile > outfile" creates a 0 length outfile with a job getting spooled to the network printer!! Seems like a bug. 2. The printout (2 pages in 1 landscape orientation) cuts out the right border of the second page i.e. right edge of the landscape page. Looking at the output it appears the dimension of the print area would fit perfect on a A4 size paper BUT in Yast I set up my system with "letter" (8.5"x11") size!! I would like to exchange settings with those who have a satisfactory 2on1 (land) output on letter size paper. I am in the midst of upgrading several key components of my system, and in the process I've been helping a less cutting edge friend upgrade his pc with my leftovers. I don't ever plan on using a modem again, but I wouldn't mind having one in a drawer somewhere just in case the need arose. This friend has a pci 28.8 modem, and I was wondering if these devices worked fine in linux. I never had much luck getting my old pnp isa modem working even with isapnp, so I had bought an external 56k and never had a problem with it. My old 56k external is going to my friend, and I was thinking about shaving the price I'm giving him in exchange for his old pci modem, but I wanted to make sure it would get detected by linux first. I have a mobo with a PP200MMX. I believe it is an ASUS. The only number I can find on it is GA-586HX R. Yesterday I had my system lock up really hard. I'm pretty sure I was in Netscape 4.06 when this happened. When I cold booted I could no longer see the harddrive that has the Linux root on it. The error was someting about having an invalid partition table, attempt to read past end of device. I attempted to run the Linux setup but that didn't work correctly. Fortunately most of my valuable data is stored on a second HD. My current problem is this: I cannot get the S.u.S.E. setup to run. If I boot from CD it sends me into a YoMama command prompt when I select "Install System". I then run Yast from there and configure my HD. The next time I boot it says it can't execute any of the basic commands that would actually set up the vfstab. The partions are there. At least I can see them. If I attempt to boot from A: using either a S.u.S.E 5.2, or a 5.1 floppy I cannot execute even basic commands like ls. Now here's the real kicker, I can remove the hard drive that has the partition problem and I still get these problems with the S.u.S.E instalation. I have been running Linux on this system for six months. Did someting screw up my firmware? Has anybody seen this before? WHAT DO I DO????????? I can's say that these are related, but I revieved an email with a garbage header, and garbage text. I have no idea if this could be part of my problem. Hi, Finally a topic that I can add a knowledgeable $.02. Well the celeron is a a great chip if you know how to exploit it right. For a list of parts get a good quarlity bx chipset motherboard like an ABIT or ASUS P2B. You will also need PC100 memory(I'll explain). Then the standard parts for any other computer. The reason why you want a good bx board and PC100 memory is you can overclock the daylights out of a celeron. I currently run mine @400(4x100) from a 266 and have had it running 24x7 for 2 months with no crashes. The success rate for over clocking I have seen runs around 90-95% and I have even seen a few go up to 448(4x112). While it may lack 2nd level cache which makes it a dog the way it comes, when you crank it up to 400+(1 jumper difference) it kicks butt especially considering its price. I have been attempting to set up a new HD with S.u.S.E 5.2. (Don't have 5.3 yet :-( I am having a problem getting my 3c59x to see the network. I am really confused because at one point it was working. I get a link light on the hub, and I can ping the machine itself. What I can't do is ping anyting else. I downloaded a new source for the 3c59x and compiled with it. Before I was seeing ff:ff:ff:... for the MAC address. At least now I see a MAC address that makes sense. If only I could see the network. I am almost positive that my TCP/IP configuration is correct. Any ideas? I'm trying to install SuSE 5.2 onto a PII with an IBM 14GB HD. This drive has 1757 cylinders, but not all of them are recognized. If I select system information from setup, before yast is launched, the full size of the disk is recognized. However, yast won't let me assign a partition to any area past cylinder 1024. Has this puppy worked for anyone? I always get the error message "unable to write to kmixer" and I still have no sound. Using a SB16 with a wavetable daughter card. Admittedly, the manual for 5.3 touches on soundcard configuration by saying "They are configured in a separate step"..... advice here would be appreciated. :) I tried uninstalling the KDE multimedia and going to the generic mixer. It's sliders work, still no sound. Thanks for any advice you have. I'm hunting for the How-To's on my CD's. I was just trying to politely point out that while you and I think the celeron is a waste of silicon, there are people out there that it makes more sense for at a substantial savings over a standard intel cpu. If all you do is browse the web, hang out in aol chat rooms, and play Quake online then it's not a bad processor, and they cost less than half what a p2 costs. This cpu is not meant for you and I, it's meant to put pcs in the homes of people that won't spend what we will on hardware. [SuSE Linux] Modem is busy?

I have just installed 5.3 and haven't totally mastered the configuration. My kernel is set up with PPP and SLIP support, properly compiled and boots nominally. I see the messages about PPP and SLIP and nothing appears wrong. The modem is a Diamond Supra Express 336i PnP asvd. When I try to access the modem by checking my email (diald is installed...don't know yet how to configure it) I get nowhere. The generic mail client locks up and can't do a check, so I have to shut down the session and restart. When I use Kppp, it says my modem is busy. I WANT to be using xfMail but haven't installed it yet. I used YaST to set this thing up and believe it is all correctly done. I checked the Activate box (even tried leaving it unchecked) but I can't dial out. What can I do differently (read "correctly") ? Thanks. Maybe I get a reply back before SuSE 5.3 gets here. Today or Monday I am expecting it. Situation: I am building a totaly new system, most of its built now. System basics: Intel P II 400 / Iwill BD100 Mhz-bus mainboard. Ram: 128Megs PC100 Sdram Video: Xpert@work AGP 8meg OEM / Quantum3D X24Meg (two voodoo2s) Monitor: 17in ViewSonic 17ps Network/Modem: NE2000 Ethernet Card, Hayes Acurra 56K flex external Sound Card: SoundBlaster 64Gold TV/Radio Tuner: Happauge v401 stereo Radio/TV tuner ..now for the catch.. Storage System Devices: IDE: CDROM 24X speed IDE: 6.4Gig Western Digital ..second catch.. SCSI #1 Adapter: FirePort 40-UW With: PlexWriter CDR 12X4 (Ultra scsi) (external) With: Syjet Syquest 1.5Gig removable (Ultra scsi) (external) With: Zip 100 (scsi II) (external) ..third catch.. SCSI #2 Adapter: Adaptec 2940-UW With: IBM 4.5Gig (Ultra Wide Scsi) (internal) ..wow I am done..all of this is in one box.. ..I know most of this set up works already.. The Asking Catch: I have had this system up with one SCSI Host Adapter before and it was with a different CPU and all HardDrives were IDE. Now this new system I am going for broke(boy am I ever) I have put in a UW SCSI HardDrive for use as my Linux Disk. And I have one IDE for winblows(winblows aint worth a scsi hd) Now, I just want to know if this should give me any problems that I should be prepared for. I like to use LILO, and LILO will be on the /mbr of the IDE drive pointing one boot to winblows on the same IDE drive and another to Linux on the SCSI drive.. Should I expect any problems with my plan? Reasons for putting the UW HD on a second SCSI host adapter, is because I have heard that having any other device that is not the same as your fastest device on the SCSI chain will slow it down to that speed. Like I might get rid of the zip on the #1 scsi host adapter, just cause of the CDR. Or put it on, only when needed. And UW is faster than just Ultra devices. I am assuming that this set up will slow Linux boot up/computer boot up, but thats just cause it has to initilize the cards and find whats on it at the given time. 1) LILO will boot from the IDE/mbr to a SCSI Linux native root / (problem?) a) this set up has two SCSI host adapters to figure out.. I have made a dirty little hack to the linux_logo program so that it displays a S.u.S.E. chameleon instead of the linux penguin. If you aren't familiar with the linux_logo program, it displays an ansi or ascii logo at boot. My chameleon isn't the prettiest, and if anyone wants to improve it you are more than welcome provided you share your work with the rest of us. Unless you live in a cave you almost assuredly read slashdot daily, so you've already seen this. I think linux binary compatibility makes good sense for SCO Unixware, and makes their product more attractive as a desktop solution. When the new Unixware 7 with linux bin support becomes available I'm good for a student license just to test drive it. Hmmm, first Sun offers Solaris 2.6 for the cost of shipping and the media, now SCO is integrating linux binary compatibility, what's next? 990f new Linux users migrate from M$ Windows. If Linux is ever going to make greater inroads in the desktop market, it has to be made easier for the initial install and setup. After its up an running the newbie can learn all the things most of us take for granted with Linux. My setup is the way I like it. Wvdial is a console program that I happen to run in a Kvt window. It can also be run from the console if that is what you want. [SuSE Linux] Any ppp setup difference with Red hat?

Hi, I got hold of instructions on how to connect to my ISP. It is written specifically for Red Hat. There are specific instructions on what to put in /etc/ppp/options, /etc/ppp/chatscript, and /etc/ppp/pap-secrets. Will these be the same with S.u.S.E? Also the hangup command uses a file /var/run/ppp0.pid which I couldn't find on my S.u.S.E. machine. Any ideas what should I use instead? The suggested command to dial and hangup for me is give as /usr/sbin/pppd connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/chatscript' and cat /var/run/ppp0/pid | xargs kill rspectively. I have S.u.S.E. 5.2. I have one other naive and stupid question. My modem is called /dev/modem on my machine but it should be called /dev/ttyS0. Would that make a difference? Hi, I got my 5.3 yesterday and I'm sorry to say that my 1st impressions are rather disappointing. Previously I've done many slackware installations and a few RedHat ones too, and of all the installation tools YaST has to me the most counter intuative and hard to use of the lot. Sax was a total disaster, until I went in to expert mode for the card and set all the parameters manually. It was a good job I still have the slackware partition still intact as I had to go back to that to get suitable modelines as Sax's XF86config totally failed to produce anything on my monitor. The PPP setup led me up the garden path until I resorted in going and reading some to the Suse scripts to see what it was trying to do.... The manual was misleading in a few places. An I still have not managed to connect to my ISP. For some reason the CHAP authentication is failing, and I've even copied my slackware chap-secrests file to ensure I didn't mistype anything. Oh and when you try to build a kernel, after completing the "make xconfig" step, a window full of german menu selections appears :-)) So much for an "english" distribution..... An how do I get to see what is happening during the build??? I had to stop it and do a manual make dep ; make clean ; make etc etc inorder to see what is going on. So far yast has got a 5/10 Must try harder.... But KDE gets a gold star , it's way cool !!!! I'll keep trying as I want to get SuSE working. I have a huge problem installing some packages I downloaded from Suse-ftp and Caldera. I cannot install them, yast tells me only: invalid: PREIN for "packagename.rpm" error installing ... rpm says only: error installing "packagename.rpm" I had this error in SuSE 5.2 and now in 5.3. 5.2 was installed on a 450 MB HD which was the only in my system. The new SuSE is on a 8GB Maxtor and a 2nd HD is in my system, too. I compiled a new kernel in both SuSE-versions before trying to install the packages. In 5.2 I used the 2.0.33-sources and in the new the 2.0.35-SuSE sources. I was working now for hours on this problem and don't see any way to get it to work. Greetings list members, I have switched to a PS2 touch pad mouse for my desktop. It works great both under Linux (regular PS2 mouse driver) and Win95/NT. For Win95 there is an additional driver which automatically takes the pointer to the scroll bar when you touch the right edge and one can scroll by draging the finger along the edge. I think it is a great feature and was wondering if any of you know of a similar driver for Linux. I just upgraded to 5.3 and now my mouse doesn't want to work with gpm or X. The device is there /dev/psaux and /dev/mouse with a link to psaux. I have a logitech 3 button ps2 mouse anybody have this problem yet? Besides this everything seems to work well. The update went smoothly and the machine came back up correctly. I've got an aliase setup (vote(a)benham.net) that's supposed to filter all mail through a custom filter. Agreed! I just DL'd the tar.gz file, put it in a directory, followed the instructions: 'make' and then 'make install'. Then edited the /etc/wvdial.conf file with my ISP tel #/user name/password. [SuSE Linux] I've messed up my mail setup

This is probably more suitable for another list/source, but this is the closest of the lists that I am subscribed to... Anyway, I've majorly messed up my mail setup. While compiling ddd, I ran into an out-of-space problem. Foolhardy as I was, I saw the problem in *a* temp directory, and thought the problem was in the /tmp directory. Since I had forgotten the disk space command (and was too lazy to find it), I assumed that the problem would be fixed if I wiped the /tmp directory. You see, I am used to this directory being full of excess stuff... Well, I took out the directory, re-established it, and tried to make a symlink to my /home directory, which I thought would have more room. This brought much disaster. Not only did it not fix my problem (I found out later once I belatedly got the xdf running that it was my compiling directory that had run out of room. Stupid newbie :-() it seems to have hosed something to do with mailbox permissions. None of my user logins can write to their mailbox through pine or elm, and mutt refuses to work properly with the su command, still trying to access the orginal login's mailbox. Does anyone have any ideas? What do I need to run/reinstall to ge things in proper order again? This'll teach me to make rash decisions about "space-making". Hi, I keep screewing things up on my SuSE 5.2 and now I'm loosing patience. i) Apparently compiling the kernel 2.0.3x with compiler above 2.7.2.x is not supported. ii) The 2.7.2.x compiler does have experimental implementations of exceptions. iii) Building C++ applications requires solid exception handling. So if I want to be able to build my kernel I need a 2.7.2.x compiler and to be able to develop solid c++ applications I need at least 2.8.1.x (I have egcs-1.0.3a). How do I have two compilers installed, to accomplish my two requiredments, without any interference? I read in the GCC FAQ/HOWTO that using the "--prefix=/not/the/same/as/gcc" instead of "-V version" was recommended, but no other links were mentioned. I find the GCC-HOWTO which I have quite old (It covers 2.7.2). I have been able to build and successfully boot kernels built with both 2.8.1 and egcs-1.0.3a (gcc version egcs-2.90.29). What does it mean that those builds are not supported? (besides very few answers when asking in newsgroups/mailing lists). No I'm not finished :) I've installed the glib 2 (libc6) (hey everybody seems to be going with glib 2). I tried to install the libg++ 2.7.2 to use with gcc 2.7.2.3, but the build-process failed because of the "./libio/libio.h" did NOT contain some "_IO_cookie_..." struct definition which was defined in "/usr/include/libio.h" I then built and installed the egcs-1.0.3a but when I try to build a very simple HelloWorld program i c++ I get the error: /usr/local/lib/libstdc++.so: undefined reference to 'filebuf virtual table' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Can anyone tell me why? I did not declare and define any virtual functions in my simple class. Neither did it help to do so. The libstdc++.so is a link to libstdc++.so.2.8.0, I believe installed by the egcs-release. I know some of the questions above do not really belong to SuSE but I was hoping that some kind reader would feel pity for me and answer them anyhow. Just for fun I can tell that for some years now I usually have more than 3 c++ compilers installed on my NT Workstation and Server machines. Symantec has been my favorite but I'm forced to use MS Dev Studio 97 nowdays. Borland C++ is also an old friend which I miss in linux. I've just started to play with CodeWarrior C++ compiler. I do not find it difficult to have so many compilers installed at once on NT. There are (almost) no interferences between them. I downloaded and burned 3 CD's with Debian GNU/Linux. The have gcc 2.8.x and egcs in their release. I have still not decided if I should abandon SuSE but maybe I'll be forced to do so because of their packaging of the C++ compilers i'm intressted in and their debian-package-manager. [SuSE Linux] Make dep

I am a new SuSE Linux user and am very impressed with the package. This is definately the most complete and user friendly Linux package I have seen. I'm very impressed, and plan to stay with SuSE for a long time. Here's my problem. I am trying to compile the kernel to add sound. I did a 'make menuconfig', added my sound parameters, and saved out. However, when I did 'make dep' I got an error that scrolled off the screen. Not aware that I could scroll the console back to view messages, I tried 'make dep' again, and all I get is the following message. make [1]: Entering directory 'usr/src/linux-2.0.33.SuSE/arch/i386/boot' make [1]: Nothing to be done for 'dep' make [1]: Leaving directory 'usr/src/linux-2.0.33.SuSE/arch/i386/boot' scripts/mkdep init/*.c > .tmpdepend /bin/sh: scripts/mkdep: Permission denied make: *** [dep-files] Error 126 I'm sure there is a simple answer to this, but being pretty new to Linux, I don't know where to turn. OK, I don't know which will be the OS of the masses, I don't know how much easier to use Linux will get, I don't know how much more buggy M$ stuff will get, I don't know who will win the browser war. While I do care about the future I do not care much to speculate about it. The speculation just reminds me of sports fans in a pub who will fill all available time to argue about the outcome of a game months before the teams have been picked. I would prefer just to see everyone push Linux a tiny bit and see what happens: * Give old dists to friends and give them all the support you can. Avoid the "What ? You've had two days & you've not written a kernel driver yet ?" style that is all too common. * Walk them gently through the installation. * Point them to helpful lists like this one. * When you find good evidence of the superiority of Linux over M$ software, send a short message with a URL - people are generally good at this which saves us a good deal of bandwidth and mail trawling. * If need be, let's have a pure speculation mailing list (I guess there are some already) that I can then avoid. I have a handful of friends now using SuSE, some from other dists, some from outside Linux & while that is no Gates-beating scale of conversion they are happy and I am happy (because I've learnt new things). I will continue to view the extra cost of a disribution to be a subsidy towards making Linux easier to install & use and just see what happens over time. I have a 3Com ImpactIQ external ISDN modem I need to get working with my Linux setup. Although it is ISDN it hooks up to the serial port. I have the manual including the "AT" command set. It is presently running properly on a Windows 95 computer, properly using my ISP's SINGLE (dual line service scheduled for next month) line service at 64K. The Linux computer does not presently have a modem attached, although I have set up the serial port through YaST. I believe I should be using a standard modem script for the modem, modified to suit my needs, but I do not know which script to edit nor how to get the system to use it for controlling the modem. [SuSE Linux] TkDesk Won't Start

Suddenly when I start TkDesk the startup graphic comes on, goes through the startup files and then nothing. The sidebar is created but no TkDesk! It worked beautifully before. Any suggestions on how to get it back would be appreciated! I'm running SuSE 5.1 on an Intel 133. I read your mails and I think it was a simply misunderstanding on both sides. Like I said, how could I learn something about Linux and my Computer if I ask for every little thing instead of using my brain and just reading some man-pages. I know this listing is for helping others getting a running Linux, and I know the point where outside-help is realy needed. I agree with you that help should be everytime permitted. Hi :-) I connect with Internet using the ELSA QuickStep 1000 pro PCI, it`s all right running the 2.0.33 Kernel. But i download from SuSE, the 2.0.35 Kernel and recompile it. In that case, the kernel install the ELSA driver well. When i execute a telnet or the kISDN, say this: when i execute a telnet: isdn-net: local hangup ippp0: changesun is 0 when i execute kISDN: isdn-net: local hangup ippp1: changesum is 0 In this moment i only connect to Internet with the 2.0.33 Kernel. ¿How i can to do to connect with the2.0.35 Kernel? Linux has to be at war with M$. The reason for this comes directly from M$ cause they leave no users for Linux. Commercial Unicses have simply too less people using them, so they cannot provide anough people for Linux too grow. I say I would be very happy seeing Linux owning 20-30 0f the desktop market, so it is worth for commercial programmers porting their work to Linux. What the Linux community does is great, but some things can't be done by them (think about games with GB's of video data). I would not be glad seeing Linux alone in the market, who would it have too compete.. Speaking of xservers, bravo to S.u.S.E. for the fast footwork on getting a matrox g200 server. That is going to be one hot card, and as soon as I finish paying for my other new hardware purchases, it's on my short list. I also hope you guys get a reference board from 3dfx for their new banshee card. Unlike their previous voodoo rush cards, this card looks to be an excellent 2d/3d combination. I think Diamond has a banshee card shipping in early September, and these cards are going to be popular with people who don't want to run a seperate card (voodoo or voodoo2) for 3d, as it will deliver excellent direct3d performance, surpassing a voodoo2, and opengl game performance about 75% as fast as a voodoo2 (the reason for this being the banshee runs at a higher clock speed than a voodoo2 and gets better benchmarks on games that have simple texturing, but on games that use multiple passes for texturing like quake2 and unreal the voodoo2 is faster because it has 2 texel processing chips instead of the banshee's single). [SuSE Linux] X nvidia server and truecolor

I'm trying to set up an stb card using the nvidia 128zx chipset with 8MB ram. I seem to be having some problems getting it to run in anything but 8bpp mode. I want to run in at least 1280x1024 truecolor. Anyone use this card? Anybody have a config file they could send me to look at? I remember nvidia use to have an faq on setting up under linux but I can't find it now. I just got suse installed last weekend. version 5.2 the installation went well. but can not print to HP6p printing. printing blanks pages. Went to printcap to look found there is hp listed. Don't know what else to do, any help can do.
