Hi, everyone! I am wondering if anybody was successful using a similar setup: 1) linux box with eth0 (outside network) and eth1 (home network) with IP masquerading running; 2) Win95 machine connected to eth1 on the linux box using a crossed cable. i do not want to buy a hub for just two machines :-) any reply is appreciated, alexm - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Actually, on my system, I have Linux and Win95 tied together via eth0, and use ppp0 for the outside network. My linux box is the gateway, proxy server for the Win95 box. I don't use a hub, and I do plan to add another box in the near future to see if I can get OS/2 on the network as well:-). So far, the only thing that I've been successful as is setting up my Linux box as the file server, the files on the win95 machine is not available to the network (even though I have them set up as user shares). As far as the network communication goes, Samba is the main workhorse:-), Apache is the proxy server. And for the most part everything runs fairly smoothly. I wouldn't really even consider using a hub unless I was running more than one local network, and then I would probably look first at using my Linux box as a router=) -- cya l8r Leon McClatchey leonmcclatchey@homemail.com Linux User 78912 (Win95 Box) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Yes, I have this working (but my gateway machine is a RedHat box). It's pretty easy. Suggestions: 1. Buy the hub. It's a great troubleshooting tool and allows future expansion. Computers are like roaches, if you have one or two, you're sure to get more. 2. Buy the hub. You won't have to fool with crossover cables that may have the wrong polarity (as was posted in the RedHat list recently). 3. Make sure both NICs are the same model. Makes life MUCH easier. alexm, If I understand, you are trying to link two systems with a crossover cable and have the linux box make the ppp connection? There will be no difference between using the crossover and a hub. I have used both. HTH - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
