[SuSE Linux] 3c59x can't see network SuSE 5.2
I have been attempting to set up a new HD with S.u.S.E 5.2. (Don't have 5.3 yet :-( I am having a problem getting my 3c59x to see the network. I am really confused because at one point it was working. I get a link light on the hub, and I can ping the machine itself. What I can't do is ping anyting else. I downloaded a new source for the 3c59x and compiled with it. Before I was seeing ff:ff:ff:... for the MAC address. At least now I see a MAC address that makes sense. If only I could see the network. I am almost positive that my TCP/IP configuration is correct. Any ideas? Ok, there's a point at which one should stop and rest. I'm well past that. I looked that the card. It is a 3c905B, Rev A. Why does 3com make these so hard to remember? Or why am I so stupid? A couple...Did you set the card up in yast, and two, did you compile it in? Steve, you should see the driver being loaded at boot also. Look through your dmesg to see if there is a problem loading the driver at boot. If not, like Aaron said, as long as you made the correct choices when compiling your kernel and set the card up in YaST you should be up and running. . -- .###. /#######\## -==============================================- ;##### ;# Mike's WindowMaker ;##### ;# <A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html"><A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html</A">http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html \# /## -==============================================- ###'---'#### - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Michael, I'll let you know if this fixes it. I'm pretty sure I have all the correct settings. <A HREF="http://www.asus.com.tw/Products/Bios/bios-p6.html#p2b"><A HREF="http://www.asus.com.tw/Products/Bios/bios-p6.html#p2b</A">http://www.asus.com.tw/Products/Bios/bios-p6.html#p2b I do get some strange stuff in the dmesg. I get three "undefined pci devices" errors. Says I need to look at some header file. I'll to that when I get a chance. BTW, what do you knwo about the sdram configuration in the "chipset feature setup" page of the CMOS setup. Also the "Host Bus Fast Data Ready" option? The book says leave them alone. That never stopped me if I thought it would make things faster. These were at defaults when I first noticed this Ethernet problem. Michael Lankton wrote:

That's normal with the 2.0.33 kernel and the Triton chipset - some
components aren't recognised. Upgrading to the SuSE 2.0.34 or 2.0.35
kernels fixes that. I don't know if that's part of your problem, but if
the card is attached to a slot not recognised by the kernel I guess it
could be?

[snip] These don't necessarily mean that's there's a problem as I get the same sort of messages regarding both my SMC EtherPower II card as well as the built-in SiS video chipset on my ASUS motherboard. I noticed after upgrading my kernel from 2.0.33 to 2.0.35, that the SMC card is now recognized and so I don't see an "undefined pci device" message anymore. There is a reference to the pci.h file because the comment block in that files tells you where you can email these values so the vendor ID's and other information can eventually be added to the pci.h file. I've just used an hour with the same problem. It turned out to be a problem with the BIOS, where IRQ 10 was assigned to PnP devices. I changed it to "Legacy ISA" and Lo! My pings ping'ed! You could also try to find 3c5x9setup somewhere from the S.u.S.E. dist. (or the Net) and let it see if it can find the card, and if it thinks that everything is OK. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Kaare, Yea, I upgraded the BIOS to 1.005 and it worked. It still has a bug. in that it shows FF:FF:FF:FF... for a MAC address after booting into NT. Hey thanks to all for the help here! I hope I'm out of the weeds on this one. Now for the other problem I am having :-( Oh @#$%^ Steve Kaare Rasmussen wrote:

The FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF problem is a known bug in the driver. The only way to go from NT to Linux is by cold-start (complete power down). NT somehow turns off the 3Com chipset during shutdown, and no one else has been able to figure out how to turn it back on without a power down. The latest version of the driver is .99E, and I've been using it successfully in 15 machines at my office. You can download the latest driver from: <A HREF="http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/"><A HREF="http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/</A">http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/ Good luck, Sam Steven T.
