[opensuse] Build subversion 1.6.0

Has anyone been able to successfully build rpms of subversion 1.6.0 yet? I made a couple of attempts using the src.rpm from 1.5.6 in factory, but with little success.. [opensuse] Latest Update of KDE 4.22 Factory for 11.1 Renders KDE 4.2 Unbootable

The KDE4 desktop was updated normally using Yast and KDE4 factory repositories. In the past, this has not caused any problems. This time however KDE4 does not start. KDM fails to show the login in screen. GDM boots up and displays the login screen, allowing access to KDE3 and Gnome but not KDE4. Using XDM as the login manager, an error message complains: "kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. The error code is 139. Check your installation." Searching on the internet did not point to a solution. The file contain the program (kdebase4-workspace-4.2.2-219.1.i586.rpm) was downloaded from the 11.1 Factory respository and installed but to no avail. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? [opensuse] Correct config for dual nic's

Using SLES10 SP2 and need to get multi-nic configured correctly. 1 nic is on a network and the other nic is on another network. Using yast->routing what is the correct way to configure this 2 nic (on the 192.168.123 network)? When I put in the expert config section of routing, dest 192.168.123.0 and give it a gateway of the 192.168.123 network, somethings stop working. Hi ! Anyone have tried M-Audio Audiphile 192 audiocard with OpenSuSE? It is listed as semi-compatible in Alsa Wiki, but not present in YaST list of supported sound cards (in 11.1 x64). YaST seem to support another M-Audio earlier model 24/96, but it is based on another chip. I seem to recall a week or so ago, there was a complaint about 3.5.10, but there was very little follow up. That leads me to believe all is safe. [opensuse] Bluetooth broken in 10.3

The last bunch of updates for 10.3 (including a new kernel) and ked3.5.10 seems to have broken bluetooth mouse support to the point I always have to go in as root and manually force a connection with the command hidd --connect (baddr) Even then no paired devices show up in Kbluetooth (kbluemon portion) and it will not allow me to setup a new mouse thru kBluetooth. It will find the mouse if I search, but if I click the setup button it responds "Failed to create the input device for Dell BT Travel mouse" So then I have to issue the hidd --connect command again. Ubuntu is also reporting a bunch of bluetooth problems. Why is there so much regression with regard to bluetoot support for simple things like mice? The bluetooth mouse worked perfectly for months on the laptop. And if I issue the commend to connect manually it works fine. So there seems nothing wrong with the BCM2045 controller or the mouse itself. I updated my thinkpad T61 to KDE 4.2.2 today. Now KDE will not run. The message returned from "startx" is kstartupconfig4 does not exist (which it does) or fails (which it does). I went into /opt/kde3 and ran startdke but it fails because it cannot connect to the xserver. Any ideas how to get back on track? Thanks. [opensuse] RE: Creating a Mirror (RAID) Partition for root + boot drive

I have had complete success partitioning my root+boot partition from my /home partition which helps a great deal in installing a new version and not selecting the update option and formatting just my root=boot partition and leaving /home partition to be over written with new settings. I have had a great deal of success in partitioning and extra space below /home as /home/data being a different physical drive. I have had complete sucess in combining the total space of more than one physical drive into one striped drive and mounting MD0 etc...... I have had complete success in encrypting a partition of /home/..... I have not yet been able to Mirror my Boot+Root partitions despite formatting with the correct format and creating a mirror RAID - Is there anything special in creating a RAID (mirror) of the boot+root partitions of a HDD. In the past I have kept the volume space identical on 2 different Physical drive to create a meaningful redundant boot+root partition that will be preserved if 1 physical drive fails that contains the boot+root partition. Yes I always configure ample swap space in all the above where multiples physical drives exist despite running 8 GIG of RAM. Is there something I have possible not done to correctly boot from a (RAID) Redundant boot+root drive on different physical media. I have not tried to RAID Redundant any /home/ or below mount point so I may have missed something. P.S Hate the new Partitioner in 11.1 - I saw nothing wrong with its form in 11.0, but like everything it needs to be like a dependency tree picture to keep everyone happy ;-) Scott

Hi, I've installed a new monitor yesterday. It has slightly different display resolution than my old monitor, which remains connected in a dual-head configuration. Configuration via SaX2 went smoothly (and I discovered for the first time that KDE has specific features for dual-head mode). I'd like to force the new monitor to be treated as if it has the same dot pitch as the old one. I took the information displayed by xdpyinfo (95x93 dpi) and used it to adjust the monitor size shown in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. But when I restarted the X11 server, the reported resolution was unchanged. So my questions are: 1) Where does the X11 server actually get its display resolution? 2) How can I change it? Specifically, that means that all leading directory components in the source arguments are replicated beneath the destination directory. Hi, I have 2 mail server, 1 as primary server that has POP (using qmail), the other 1 smtp (using postfix). They both in my network. I make like this because load in primary server is so high because of blocking spam and viruses. The've been work for almost 2 years, but now there's a problem, since some of our sales person needs to sent mail through our mail server, i need to make SMTP-Auth because right now the cant do it (rcpthost not allowed or Relay access denied). So question is, can I make a standalone SMTP Server with smtp-auth without using pop / imap ? Where is it best to have my ftp server: On the router box or on another box on the lan? If the latter (I think that's the right answer), I have Router 192.168.0.1 eth0 --> 192.168.1.3 (eth1) eth0 is firewalled as SuSEfirewall2 external zone with port 21 open to which ftp requests are sent. If vsftpd is running on 192.168.1.1 can someone give me the (I think it's FW_REDIRECT) syntax to put in the firewall script on the router? Do the high passive ports (30000 to 30100 by default) also have to be forwarded? [opensuse] New ATI driver released... And works!

Hello Listmates, I just installed ATI's new driver from ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run and all I can say is "It's about time!" The resulting rpm generated installed without any heavy problems. My glxgears went from avgeraging 2300-2400 to 4800-5200. A couple of side notes on this. If you were using the radeonhd driver beforehand and did the recommended atconfig --initial command, please review your xorg.conf file to make sure it didn't leave the radeonhd loaded. I diidn't see inprovements in speed till I removed that reference from the file. All, I just saw a msg on the factory list the the 11.1 KDE factory repository has been updated to 4.2.2. I'm upgrading from 4.2.1 to it now. I assume it is not well tested. (ie. factory). My upgrade is over a GB of data, so it is a big pull if you want to upgrade. I have an old 33 Gb scsi IBM xeon. The really old black ones that weigh 20 kilos and make a hell of a noise. I want to use it as a router with squid, dansguardian and firewall. It would be part of a 21 node lan sharing around 60Gb of files via nfs. I can set it up using a keyboard and monitor but after that it would have to be accessed by ssh. I thought I'd just let yast do it and not let it have a separate /home but then I read so much stuff about /var for squid and everyone suddenly becomes a router expert. Can anyone give me a one liner as to how I partition it? Somehow, since upgrading to ooo3, the links to the templates are screwed up royally. Meaning that if I do: File -> New -> Templates and Documents-> My Templates -> ltr-Rankin_elec_sig Instead of getting my office letterhead w/electronic signature template: (http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/ooo/rankin-letterhead.jpg) I get my home template w/electronic signature: (http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/ooo/3111-letterhead.jpg) The files are *not* the problem because if I use konqueror and go to ~/.ooo3/user/template and click on ltr-Rankin_elec_sig.ott, then it pulls the correct file up just fine. So somewhere in ooo's logic or links, something is crosswired, but where? I have grepped every directory, picked through every .xml file (found the names in store.xcu) deleted the .xml files and forced a re-create of them, but the stinking templates are still crossed. I don't know why this would make any difference, but these templates were ooo2.0 templates before openoffice was upgraded to 3.0. Since the upgrade to 3.0 (I can't recall when? 6-8 months ago when ever openSuSE put out the release?) the templates have been backwards. I have even tried moving the templates out of the .ooo3 template directory and starting and stopping ooo3 writer to 'reset' any links, but no joy. When I move the templates back or re-add them, the mix up is back... And now, to rub salt in the wound, I can't even display the "About OpenOffice" dialog and 'copy' the version to paste it here to be precise about the version, etc... because some little programmer thought it would be 'cute' to make it impossible to copy from the dialog -- that's progress. Sheesh, this is 2009, I shouldn't have to retype anything or drop to a console to query the rpm database just to get the release information. [opensuse] "grub --batch" Hangs @ 100% CPU During 11.1 Installation

Hi, Partway through the package installation phase of a from-scratch openSUSE 11.1 installation, the process hung. The last package shown being installed was grub (the hang occurred when it showed 100% of the package installed). I switched to VC 9 and ran ps. The command "grub --batch" was consuming 100% CPU. In fact, it still is. At this moment, it has used over 40 minutes of CPU time. Has anybody seen this? Do you know what the problem is? Do you know how to solve it? [opensuse] php5-mhash disabled...

I just saw that mhash is disabled in the spec file for php5 if SUSE version is 11.0 or higher. Simple question, does it do any harm? I know it's been deprecated in favor for hash, but I have quite a few apps using mhash still, so if it doesn't do any harm I thought I'd continue using it until all apps has been remade for hash. I really didn't find any relevant info on it with a quick Google search, so I ask you fellows. [opensuse] Nvidia driver, major problems

Hi list, - my SuSE11.1 with the latest Nvidia driver (installed via YaST), crashed a few times on me. - so I downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.44-pkg1.run package, switched to runlevel 3 and ran it. Without problems. - however, when I intend to startx, I get: "Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 180.29, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 180.44. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version." Now, I understand what it says...but I sure don't know how to remedy the situation. [opensuse] USB device in VirtualBox

Greetings fellow listers. I am encountering a vexing problem with the current 64-bit version of Sun's VirtualBox(2.1.4r42893) on openSUSE 11.0. I've noticed that I cannot mount USB devices in a Windows XP guest, even though everything seems to be configured correctly: USB and USBEHCI are enabled in the xVM Manager application. usbfs entry added to /etc/fstab to allow group access to USB bus. No USB filters are applied. users have been added to the vboxusers group and USB drives show up in /dev/bus/usb as belonging to that group - so the usbfs line in fstab must be working. When the Windows guest is started, mousing-over the USB icon indicates that no devices are attached, but right-clicking on the icon shows the name of the device in grayed text - so I know it knows it's there, but it will not mount in the Windows guest. opening a shell and typing: "VBoxManage list usbhost" indicates that the USB device is there, but its current state is listed as: Unavailable. [opensuse] Expo desktop plugin for Compiz -- It's kind of cool

Listmates, I tried the expo desktop plugin for compiz this evening and ... it's pretty cool. Basically it allows you to move applications left and right to different sides of the cube while you are looking at all 4 sides stretched out across the desktop. Top-left corner of the desktop or Win-e activates the plugin, then rt-click on the desired desktop face closes to that face. Former rescues allowed me to use ifup-dhcp eth0, but with 11.1, it silently ignores my request, and ifconfig insists in having no configuration for eth0 :-(. Konqueror (3.5.10) will offer to Fuse Mount a samba/windows share into a user's directory tree (if fuse and fusesmb are installed). This option appears on the Tools menu if all the right pieces are installed. And it allows users to mount a shared remote directory right into their working directory (in a subdirectory called fusemounts) However there appears no easy way to Umount this once mounted (without resorting to the command line). (I can't see that Dolphin offers FUSE Mount at all, and under KDE4. It does not appear in the Kong menu under KDE4 either. Hi list, - just for the record - yesterday I received great help from this list with my nvidia problems. I finally got my new nvidia version 180.44 running. - today, I needed to install SUN's latest and greatest JAVA 1.6update13 JRE with browserplugin and all. I used YaST for that. I noticed, however, that YaST absolutely wanted to (as a dependency) to install Nvidia 180.some-old-orignal-yast-version !! I had no choice but to let it do so. I did NOT reboot, my JRE/plugin worked fine. I went home and (hence) rebooted sure enought, a blank black screen, no X and so. So I checked modules and all, and yes, nvidia conflict just like yesterday. So I used zypper as instructed and rebuilt nvidia. Rebooted and I'm up and flying again. All is ok. Now...should YaST include the nvidia stuff when installing SUN/JRE? I'm trying to setup OCFS(oracle cluster file system) Here are my commands: #rpm -ivh ocfs-tools-1.0.10-1.i386.rpm gtk >= 1.2.8 is needed by ocfs-tools-1.0.10-1.i386.rpm #rpm -ivh gtk-1.2.10-993.i586 gtk-lang =1.2.10 is needed by gtk-1.2.10-993.i586 # rpm -ivh gtk-lang-1.2.10.993.i586.rpm gtk = 1.2.10 is needed by gtk-lang-1.2.10.993.i586 1) now i cannot install the rpm (gtk and gtk-lang) that they require each of them viceversa. 2) Also on another rpm installation, the installation failed with error msg: failed dependencies rpmlib(PayloadIsLzma) <= 4.4.2-1 is needed but i'm unable to find this rpm on rpm.pbone.net , rpmfind.net and also checked all other google pages with regard to this error with no success. Hi, Can anybody advise me how to set-up a USB mike to work with Skype? The Mic is a Logitech Desktop Digital Microphone - USB (i.e. AK5370). The Mic appears on a "AK5370" tab in KMix but I cannot move the volume slider (but doesn't show by default - only after Channel Show ...). It shows in GMerlin ALSA Mixer on the "USB Mixer" tab where I can adjust the volume slider. I've tried changing all the "Prefer" settings ("AKM AK5370 (USB Audio)") in the "Default Capture Device Preferences" within "Sound and Video Configuration" of "Multimedia - System Settings" (Backend is Xine) In Skype (2.0.0.68. i586) I've tried all the options in "Sound-In" without success. Skype does works with a cheap PC Mic plugged in my PCI sound card (and the USB Mic works with MS!) - but I would prefer to use the USB Mic. Further details below ... I have been following the recent list threads regarding nVidia issues, in the hope that I might glean something to resolve my problem. Until a couple of weeks ago I have been running 11.1 x86_64 on box with an nVidia GF 7300LE card driving a ViewSonic VX2235wm LCD monitor at it's native 1680x1050 resolution. The card died and I replaced it with a GF 9600GT. To cut a ridiculously long story short, I have tried every conceivable option I can think of (eg. sax2 -r -m 0=nv, with and without the nVidia drivers, direct editing of xorg.conf, totally clean install) to restore the 1680x1050 resolution. Without the nVidia drivers I can achieve a maximum resolution of 800x600, with the drivers I get an "eye blasting" 640x480, both of which are as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. Endless Googling and list searching have not unearthed anything useful. Is there, by any chance, someone on this list running 11.x on a box with a 9600GT driving a VX2235wm at it's native 1680x1050 resolution? If so, would they please enlighten me as to how this is done? I have been using "battling" SuSE/OpenSUSE for around 15 years and overcome numerous configuration hurdles and obstacles, but this one makes me think it's now time to call it a day. My work has recently implemented a new browser-based Juniper VPN solution. I have an RSA SecureID token and can access my corporate network via the cisco vpn client for linux or now through the Juniper browser connection. When connected via the cisco vpn client - or when under VirtualBox/VMWare using vista - I can launch Outlook (either native or using crossover office) and use KRDP to connect to my office workstations. One the new Juniper browser-based VPN, I can connect, access Outlook Web Access but cannot run the RDP. I tried it in IE6 using Crossover Office but that loads a page which then dies. Listmates, Here is a stray though for your prompt. If you do any amount of work from the command line in konsole, x-term, etc..., then your prompt should help you get work done. Why prompts tonight?? Who knows, but... Where virtually everything requires a copy, move, ssh, rsync, scp, etc.. why not have 1/2 the work already done by your prompt? The simple prompt I consider indispensable looks like this: As user: 20:42 alchemy:~/linux/scripts/config/zypp> As root: [20:44 alchemy:/home/david/linux/scripts/config/zypp] # The first element in both is just the time and can be ignored for purposes of this discussion. What you also can't see -- is the user prompt time is lightgray and the text of the prompt is lightblue, for root, time is lightred, host is lightblue and text of the prompt is red. The colors work fine on light or dark backgrounds. [1.] Small png of both prompts: http://www.3111skyline.com/images/prompt.png The beauty of the prompt is the format of: hostname:/path/to/pwd. Which is also the format required by rsyc and scp and the path information works with every other bash command. This really makes life easier in tabbed consoles like 'konsole' in KDE when working between a local and remote system or between 2 remote systems where switching between hosts (tabs) is as simple at [shift]+[left/right]. rsync or scp then becomes the simple matter of (a) copy current host:/path from prompt (b) [shift]+[left/right] to change consoles, (c) type 'rsync -options' [middle-click] paste of host:/path information, (d) type or copy 'filename .', and your done (without typos) Of couse where there is no path information, simply typing is faster, but when you need to do a rsync pull from 21:47 nirvana:/srv/www/download/linux/scripts/utils/filename.ext, I prefer the [select]+[middle-mouse-paste] method any day. Setting the prompts are simple enough. From the command line, the user prompt is: PS1="\[\e[0;37m\]\A\[\e[1;34m\] \[\e[1;34m\]\h:\w> \[\e[0m\]" Root prompt is: PS1="\[\e[1;34m\][\[\e[1;31m\]\A \[\e[1;34m\]\h\[\e[0;31m\]:\w\[\e[1;34m\]] # \[\e[0m\]" In your .bashrc to set the prompt so it is your default, just add export in front of it like this: export PS1="\[\e[0;37m\]\A\[\e[1;34m\] \[\e[1;34m\]\h:\w> \[\e[0m\]" (**Note: you will rarely find the /A prompt option documented for whatever reason. It is just the time for the record) You can also set the secondary prompt PS2 in the same manner, but I have never found a use for this. The default '>' is just fine for all purposes. Additionally, what I've found is that the over-use of colors or other fancyness quickly becomes more annoying than useful. But, if you want to experiment, then: It's possible to add special codes to your prompt that will cause the title bar of your X terminal (such as rxvt or aterm) to be dynamically updated. All you need to do is add the following sequence to your PS1 prompt: "\e]2;titlebar\a" Simply replace the substring "titlebar" with the text that you'd like to have appear in your xterm's title bar. For example, to put the time, host and path information in the konsole titlebar as well as in your prompt, use: PS1="\[\e]2;\A \h:\w\a\[\e[0;37m\]\A\[\e[1;34m\] \[\e[1;34m\]\h:\w> \[\e[0m\]" And... yes, the time and path information will update dynamically. (neat trick. Usefulness??) Hello, With konqueror from kde4 in opensuse-11.1, it is not possible to use SSL since no issuer certificates are laoded. I tired to load manually some certificates, but the certificate list stays empty. I am pretty sure that the certificate I tried to import was OK since konqueror asked whether I want to make it accessible to KMail also. All, I've got a few old machines that I've been upgrading that have /dev/sdaX type entries in /etc/fstab. I'm in the process of moving them to /dev/disk/by-uuid/* entries 2 questions: 1) Is there a tool for this. I've just done one machine by looking at the symbolic links in that directory, then hand editing the fstab to be correct. Only takes a few minutes, but it is tedious and error prone. 2) How do you handle swap partitions? I ask because for the first machine I'm handling I have my swap partition on /dev/sda10, but there is not a symbolic link in /dev/disk/by-uuid for that partition. [opensuse] can't play music from radio station; upgrade

Trying to play music with RealPlayer 10. Don't know whether that is the version of RealPlayer that came with SuSE 9.3, that I'm running. This is an option for the radio station--RealPlayer--at one time I had some kind of music come out of the speakers, but I don't know how I did it, but I did know that they could play. I don't seem to have amarok on the machine, and in any event, the radio station doesn't offer that option. (The radio station plays country music. It is KSEY, in Texas, and it works on a Windows machine in WinAmp and Nero, but when it drops out in Nero, you have to manually reset it; WinAmp resets itself. I don't know how to activate Amarok, which is supposed to be wonderful for Linux. The program says that the music is playing, but nothing comes out of the speakers. The system is not in mute mode. ************************************************************ I'd like to put version 11 on the machine, but I don't know how to preserve /home/doug/documents/ thru the new install. I really want the information in this directory to come thru whole. Presently have Reiser FS and have had no problem with it. I also cannot write to the CD that I installed from, so I can't write the directory to a CD. Please be patient with me. [opensuse] Gnome equiv of Superkaramba?

So.. I'm tinkering with Gnome on 11.1... in KDE I can use Superkaramba or in KDE4, the plasma widgets to plunk nice system monitor things on the desktop. So far I cannot find anything equivalent in Gnome. If I start Superkaramba, the transparencies don't work... Google Gadgets are ugly... and gDesklets don't work at all (known problem discussed on the forums and apparently a bug open against it, and been a problem for at least 4 or 5 months now from what I read)... So what do Gnome users use? Is this me not finding the obvious again, or is this just something else missing from Gnome? Hi, I would like to know if it possible to create a symbolic link on machine1 pointing to the folder residing on machine 2. something like this for example: mkdir /dev/test ln -s //1.1.1.1/dev/important /dev/test But the above command did not work. [opensuse] installing 3 distros into 3 existing partitions- by a newby

Hello everyone- I hope you can help a rookie to Linux. I am trying to install openSUSE 11.1 and Fedora 10 on 2 separate already existing partitions on a newly installed 120 GB HD. I actually created 3 partitions of about 10 GB each, using a LiveCD Ubuntu 8.04, and installed Ubuntu on the first one and Freespire 2.08 on the second. I have a third empty partition of 10 GB and the last partition of about 90 GB on which I want to install Win XP Pro. Neither Ubuntu nor Freespire have drivers for my wireless card, but it seems that openSUSE 11.1 and Fedora 10 do. So I want to install openSUSE on the secong existing partition and Fedora on the third existing partition. But I am totally confused by the installation DVD choices. Do I do Partition Based or LVM based? The installation DVD wants to format both the first two partitions. Can't I leave the existing partition with Ubuntu already installed and just format the 2nd one (that has Freespire on it) and install openSUSE on that one? And then install Fedora 10 on the 3rd, leaving the 4th empty for Win XP? I have looked at several LiveCDs of several distros and they all have different procedures regarding the existing partitions, and I am lost. openSUSE (installation DVD) does not seem to allow me to choose a particular partition to format and install into. [opensuse] postfix can send out, but I can't receive mail to my domain

I can send mail out from my server and it gets to it's destination, but when I hit reply to send back from any address (local address excluded) I never get the mail. I don't see anything in /var/log/mail.info or .err to see what's going on. It used to work fine before. I do have a MX record pointing to the right destination too. You really have to be more specific than that. There's a Sun JRE and JDK (the only ones I recommend using) and the OpenJDK versions (which are often acceptable). There's also Gnu Classpath, but that's beneath mention. Or would be were not for the fact that it's what's installed by default. [opensuse] My first real problem with 11.1 - PANIC early exception.

I've just hit my first real problem with 11.1 - when the machine attempts to boot into the 2nd stage of the install, all I get is 3-4 lines of text ending with "PANIC early exception" plus some registers. This problem sounds very similar, but whether it made it in time for 11.1 is not clear: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=434567 Here's my question - I'm thinking of trying to use a newer kernel, e.g. from Factory, but how do I add Factory as a repository during installation? Hi, As icewm is not so heavy, i like to use it on my smaller systems. But since the latest updates, some dirty green background has settled, and not the one belonging to the theme. My idea was to replace my own wallpaper with this one, only i simply cannot find where icewm stores the background, it is the same now for all themes. Hello, all of a sudden I cannot ssh connect to my providers webserver anymore, either as user, as root nor in a virtualbox/winXP/putty... There are some "funny" things: - I can ssh to other servers of the same provider, but not to "mine" - I can ssh from my Computer in Basel/Sitzerland to "my" server, but not from here in Barcelona/Spain The ISP - of course - says, the problem is on my side, but I can't find out anything... [opensuse] mdraid 1 - is one driver primary for read/write, then sync mirrors?

Listmates, Looking at hdparm -tT results for a Linux Software raid 1 array, I see some differences in the read performance that I don't know whether it is just individual drive difference or whether mdraid may have something to do with it. The mdraid 1 setup is on a pair of 750G Seagate drives: /dev/sdb: ST3750330AS: 34°C /dev/sdc: ST3750330AS: 36°C The raid1 devices are /dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdc1 which take up the entire disk on each. I don't know if there is a reason not to use the whole drive in the array, but the array is basically a temporary setup on my sons computer (with open SATA port) to throw the drives in to get a week or so of runtime on them before moving them over to a server. Checking read performance with hdparm of each individual drive and then of the array itself shows a small performance difference/drop for /dev/sdc: 02:11 KillerZ~> for i in sdb sdc md0; do sudo hdparm -tT /dev/$i; done /dev/sdb: Timing cached reads: 2130 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1064.71 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 328 MB in 3.01 seconds = 108.94 MB/sec /dev/sdc: Timing cached reads: 2088 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1044.08 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 292 MB in 3.02 seconds = 96.84 MB/sec /dev/md0: Timing cached reads: 2116 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1057.94 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 322 MB in 3.01 seconds = 107.13 MB/sec Thinking about it (dangerous thing to do) the questions arose of (1) how does mdraid actually work, is there a primary drive that is uses for read/write while the other is there for sync/backup? (2) If you can't write simultaneously to both at the same time using the same clock cycle (can you??) so somewhere it seems there must be a write/copy function in the mdraid scheme, and if the drives are slaved together by my the data in mdadm.conf, could the read performance difference being seen with /dev/sdc above be the result of mdraid function and not simply a drive variance? I haven't a clue, that's why I'm asking. And then there is the /dev/md0 hdparm performance which looks like it takes the better of the two performance stats, less a tiny amount of mdraid overhead. How does that work? Or is the difference there more of a simple weighted averaging of the drive performance between sdb and sdc?? [opensuse] Suse 11.1 Monitor Resolutions

I'm currently running Suse 11.0 using a monitor capable of 1440x900. But there is not support for 1440x900, so I have been running the monitor at 1280x768. Does Suse 11.1 support 1440x900 resolution? [opensuse] Stubborn screen blanking under OS11.1

Hi, For a few weeks now my OpenSUSE 11.1 desktop PC has arbitrarily decided to blank the screen after 6 minutes of inactivity. Nothing that I have tried so far has managed to modify this behaviour. I tried: * disabling screensaver * under > Configure Desktop > Advanced > Power Management Assign the same profile to all scenarios and disable screen power management for that profile * Using SaX2 to modify DPMS settings but Sax2 keeps reporting circular syntax errors in xorg.conf when trying to save so I gave up. * editing xorg.conf to set Option "DPMS" to "false" I saw this issue brought up in the past on the forum and this mailing list but no solution was provided so I am taking my chance. [opensuse] Xen paravirtualized guest upgrade problems

I have two systems running OpenSuSE 10.3 as xen host and a few guests. I like to upgrade everything to latest OpenSuse 11.1 but bumped in to problems. I managed to get the host upgraded but when it comes to a paravirtualized guest I don't know where to start. Googled a bit and the closest I got was to use "zypper dup" but for me it was more errors then I can handle so I don't think that's the way to go. Boot CD won't work since the cd doesn't have a paravirtualized kernel I might be able to wing something together for a network boot but don't know where to start. Before 3.0.1, I used to be able to add &nbsp to an html doc by using Ctrl+Space. What do I use now. I looked in Help but could not find it - unless I missed ti.
