[opensuse] New ATI driver released... And works!
Hello Listmates, I just installed ATI's new driver from ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run and all I can say is "It's about time!" The resulting rpm generated installed without any heavy problems. My glxgears went from avgeraging 2300-2400 to 4800-5200. A couple of side notes on this. If you were using the radeonhd driver beforehand and did the recommended atconfig --initial command, please review your xorg.conf file to make sure it didn't leave the radeonhd loaded. I diidn't see inprovements in speed till I removed that reference from the file. I just updated my system (OS11.1 with Radeon HD4870) from 9.2 to 9.3 and performance sucks: glxgears went from 11100 to 3750 and flg_glxgears went from 3870 to 1050. This is a good put. Also, I failed to mention to uninstall the old flgrx rpm's to help prevent issues. Also, I have a friend running this on a Thinkpad T61 w/ATI card and he has the s2ram working . There was some minor back tracking and troubleshooting to achieve the result. I'm shooting from the hip on this but I belive this program has option "--force --radeontool" which successfully handles with ati graphic cards?? I need to refer back to the the group on this one. -- Thank you, Michael.A.Sterba ARS - KG7HQ Assistant Director/Technical Specialist Northwest Division, ARRL -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Hmmm, you are the lucky one ;) I have problem with wake up from s2ram when power cable is pulled off. It always freeze. I have Thinkpad r60 (ati mobility X1400) and OpenSuse 11.1 m. On Sunday 29 March 2009 19:27:55 Michael A. Sterba wrote:

(note this is all with my same Toshiba P35 laptop, ATI X1300, openSuSE 11.0) Well, it's back to the 8-9 driver --- again... A few notes for the 9-3 driver. (1) The driver is much improved over the 9-2 release. It doesn't cause my laptop to reboot on xdm start. That's definitely an improvement. (2) After kde3.5 start, the sluggishness experienced with the 8-10 through 9-1 drivers returned. (3) Before testing with glxgears, I was able to work with/without compiz, albeit slowly on my x1300 laptop hardware... good job; (4) Then glxgears was started, first count 380FPS, then 40FPS, then 35, then 20, and then the fscking driver HARDLOCKED my laptop. Locked it up tighter than a drum. During the entire glxgears session -- not a single gear appeared in the window, just a blank/black glxgears window. Same shit we went through 4-5 ATI driver releases ag0. (5) Remember what your mother always said. "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all." ... ... Screw it ---> POS ATI driver. (6) Check that old faithful is still ready to go: 03:24 alchemy:~> cat linux/ati-compiz/reinst_8-9 #!/bin/bash /home/david/linux/scripts/ati/atidrv-install \ /home/david/linux/ati-compiz/rpms/fglrx64_7_1_0_SUSE110-8.532-1.x86_64.rpm echo -e "\n\tScrew ATI\n" exit 0 (7) sh linux/ati-compiz/reinst_8-9 (Ah, back to normal...) If this wasn't a laptop, I'd rip this ATI card out so fast and replace it with an nVidia it would make your head spin. I sure hope ATI can get its act together soon. Why it has a problem fixing what was NOT broken with the 8-9 driver and what its programmers broke in 8-10 and has remained broken in 8-11, 8-12, 9-1 (god knows what happened with 9-2) and is still borked in 9-3 just strains the imagination. Anders, It was the strangest crap I have ever seen out of an ATI driver. This was the first time I had seen the FPS from glxgears apparently go into a death spiral with decreasing FPS each time. I wanted to save the output, but the damn driver hardlocked my laptop. The FPS spiral looked like this (approximate values): 1900 frames in 5.0 seconds = 380 200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 40 175 frames in 5.0 seconds = 35 100 frames in 5.0 seconds = 20 After reinstall of the 8-9 driver, I'm back to normal: 03:24 alchemy:~> glxgears 4944 frames in 5.0 seconds = 988.783 FPS 5041 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1008.174 FPS 5031 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1006.023 FPS 5032 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1006.366 FPS Going back in history over the past 2 working drivers (9.2 not included), the glxgears frame rates with default glxgears window size have been: 9-2 Driver: (no data, caused reboot on xdm start) 9-1 Driver: 01:02 alchemy:~> glxgears #no compix 3030 frames in 5.0 seconds = 605.572 FPS 2587 frames in 5.0 seconds = 517.319 FPS 2578 frames in 5.0 seconds = 515.254 FPS 01:02 alchemy:~> glxgears # with compiz 2753 frames in 5.0 seconds = 550.591 FPS 2598 frames in 5.0 seconds = 519.210 FPS 2604 frames in 5.0 seconds = 520.450 FPS 2600 frames in 5.0 seconds = 519.994 FPS 8-12 Driver: 23:59 alchemy:~> glxgears 3021 frames in 5.0 seconds = 604.191 FPS 2613 frames in 5.0 seconds = 522.544 FPS 2614 frames in 5.0 seconds = 522.795 FPS When I booted to runlevel 3 to reinstall the 8-9 driver, I did save the Xorg.0.log from the 9-3 driver run. (attached). I don't know what the continuing problem is, but it sure looks like the 80.1 M combined do all/be all driver package has gotten a little to big for ATI to manager :-( -- David C. That's why I'm back to the 8-9 release of the fglrx driver. It works flawlessly with my hardware. And... that is also why it is so frustrating that for my x1300 hardware where everything worked PERFECT with the September 2008 ATI driver, that it is now borked and has been screwed up with the Oct., Nov. Except that, as Anders points out, and I can confirm, this driver works just fine, as did the previous one. My hardware is the x1400 so its a tad different than yours. In the past I have had problems with ATI drivers trying to do an in-place upgrade rather than a remove and re-install. Further, I've known ATI to put modules in strange places that were too far down the path, such that you end up with a mix of old and new modules running. (This stuff is really hard to find, but it has happened in OpenSuse since before it was OpenSuse. I first discovered this when I did a clean install and the ATI drivers worked perfectly out of the gate. Since I had two identical machines, I compared files and dates till I found the culpret.) I don't know what to suggest, since you probably don't want to nuke and reinstall that machine, and 8-9 is working great for you. There is not much new in this release to chase after. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Pete, Check the video memory type setting in the bios. On my HP, it's under advanced settings. There is a choice of UMA or sideport. Somewhere I found a reference that said to change it to UMA. If I recall correctly, libstdc++.so.5 comes in compat-libstdc or libstdc-compat (at work, so I can't check). Count me in as yet another unhappy ati user. The post 8-9 drivers cut my glxgears FPS in half (from >4500 to ~2100) and the new 9-3 driver has cut the half in half (~1000) :-( The sad thing is that the new driver finally fixed the flickering that appeared with all 3D applications, which makes it a lot better than its predecessors. The next laptop I purchase will definitely not have an ati card. Nkoli -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm not sure what you are trying to do but if it involves compiling something then you need libstdc++33-devel. From 11.1 it's called libstdc++33, if you're using 11.0 and down it's compat-libstdc++. Well, I can confirm that rpm installed it here. Perhaps your rpm command is broken. [OT] One "no" is sufficient. Multiple "no"s makes you sound a bit like an ass to me. While I don't mind putting up with that from my paying customers, it's a bit irksome when providing free technical support. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. bss@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ \_/

Sorry I came in so late. I'm not sure but normally drivers that are not rpm's compile kernel modules, in which case you will need to install libstdc++33-devel as well as libstdc++33 to enable the compiler to find the library. libstdc++33 definitely contains libstdc++.so.5 and if you look in /usr/lib64 you should be able to find it. There is also the 32 bit version for x86_64 called libstdc++33-32bit which would place a libstdc++.so.5 in /usr/lib. Hope this helps. The number behind the dot is relevant. Peter is telling you that he is installing on 11.1, and you are giving instructions for 11.0. Hmm, That's where the confusion is. I would have sworn he said 11.0? <quote> and i also am getting this from it now i must add not on this machine before anyone spots the sig this box does run 10.3 and will stay for the forseeable future it is the laptop that is on 11.1 right that out the way no to it . </quote> Nope your right -- sorry. I'm not sure what you are trying to do but if it involves compiling something then you need libstdc++33-devel. From 11.1 it's called libstdc++33, if you're using 11.0 and down it's compat-libstdc++. These packages contain libstdc++.so.5 and for compiling you need the devel versions as well. Regards Dave P

Sorry for my english (I am thats why its bad) I stated above "if you're using 11.0 and down it's compat-libstdc++" which means:- opensuse equal to and less than 11.0 = compat-libstdc++". opensuse equal to and greater than 11.1 = libstdc++33. In fact there is a whole range of libstdc++ compatibility libraries. In 11.2 alpha I have libstdc++33, libstdc++41, libstdc++43 and libstdc++44 available if needed. I think the powers that be are trying to limit the size of the compat libs that need to be installed so one package has split into many. After working through Peter's issue, there is an addition to the ATI driver install instructions:
Then follow my install instructions (from the ATI install instructions):
***** NOTE the example below is for version (8.532) the 8-9 driver, so don't forget to use the current package in the steps below:
(1) make sure the 'kernel-source' package is installed, if not, then install it (as root):
zypper in kernel-source
(1a) make sure the 'compat-libstdc++' (The Old stdc++ Library) package is
installed:
zypper in compat-libstdc++
We haven't heard back from Peter whether that solved his problem, but I bet
that was the last piece of the puzzle. I'm surprised that this isn't listed as
a dependency to the fglrx rpm. Perhaps Ben can help up out here....
Bob,
See the complete thread with subject "Re: [opensuse] New ATI driver
released... And works! -- NOT!" for the remainder of the details. The thread
dates are 3/29/09 - 4/1/09.
Additionally, thank you Bob for picking up the reins as the openSuSE ATI
driver package maintainer from Stefan. Glad to have you at the helm, but... I
don't envy the challenges you have ahead.
In the past, Stefan had a direct contact named Luugi Marsan at ATI

Since I had two identical machines, I compared files and dates till I found the culpret.)
I don't know what to suggest, since you probably don't want to nuke and reinstall that machine, and 8-9 is working great for you. There is not much new in this release to chase after.
The bizarre part is that my card *is Listed* as being supported, right under yours. I have the x1300 which ain't a whole lot different than then x1400. ATI Mobility Radeon™ X1600 ATI Mobility Radeon™ 9550 ATI Mobility Radeon™ X1400 ATI Mobility Radeon™ 9500 ATI Mobility Radeon™ X1300 ATI Mobility Radeon™ Xpress 1100 Series ATI Mobility Radeon™ X1200 ATI Mobility Radeon™ Xpress 200 Series ( 9-3 release notes page 3) I do a complete proper removal and reinstall, so I don't think I'm screwing up there: (1) make sure the 'kernel-source' package is installed, if not, then install it (as root): zypper in kernel-source (2) Build the fglrx rpm from the install package. i586: sh ati-driver-installer-8-9-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg SuSE/SUSE110-IA32 x86_64 sh ati-driver-installer-8-9-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg SuSE/SUSE110-AMD64 SuSE/SUSE110-AMD64 (3) make a copy of your current xorg.conf so sax2 won't screw it up cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /tmp/xorg.conf ************************************************ ** if not in runlevel 3, go to runlevel 3 now ** ************************************************ (4) (as root for all remaining commands) init 3 (5) Removing old fglrx driver rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep fglrx) (6) Preparing the kernel source (not 100% necessary, but proper) cd /usr/src/linux make mrproper make cloneconfig > /dev/null 2>&1 make modules_prepare make clean (7) Install the new fglrx rpm you created, example: rpm -Uvh fglrx64_7_1_0_SUSE110-8.532-1.x86_64.rpm (8) Initialize your xorg.conf for the new driver: aticonfig --initial (9) Add options to the end of /etc/X11/xorg.conf to enable compiz: Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "true" Option "DAMAGE" "true" EndSection (10) REBOOT, I can't think of a way to do the install that is any more complete or thorough than that. I mean I guess I could dump fglrx, run the radeon driver for a while, while doing several more rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep fglrx)s, but honestly, I can't see where it is going south on my end? Oh well, I have a spare drive for my laptop with 10.3 on it, I'll try the 9-3 driver on 10.3 and see if that makes a difference.... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hello Listmates,
I just installed ATI's new driver from ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run and all I can say is "It's about time!"
The resulting rpm generated installed without any heavy problems. My glxgears went from avgeraging 2300-2400 to 4800-5200.
Can somebody confirm that the package is generated although "make" is not installed, which leads to a lack of DRI, i.e. Xorg stating "(EE) fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed, GPS not been initialized." while starting. Wouldn't it be a bug that building the package does not complain about the missing make? If only found it when running the fglrx-kernel-build.sh, which did complain. Ya, more better than 9.2 driver. no need to back to 8.9.
The resulting rpm generated installed without any heavy problems. My glxgears went from avgeraging 2300-2400 to 4800-5200.
But after chmod 755 ati.run and rpm -Uvh fglrx.rpm. sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx my glxgears went only around 337 FPS My ati x2300. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
