There originally was no resolv.conf in /var/lib/ntp/etc. I copied mine from /etc and it started working. Is that a bug that needs to be reported?
resolv.conf is not part of the files handled by the prepare_chroot() function of /etc/init.d/ntp to initializes the chroot envirionment. And your report is the first I've seen. As a workaround you might add /etc/resolv.conf to NTPD_CHROOT_FILES of /etc/sysconfig/ntp. But I like to understand why resolv.conf is needed in your case but not in so many others. Looking at the source of ntp in 11.1, the config is actually read - and the server name resolved - before doing the chroot(). getconfig() is called before. Maybe it's just happening too early. I think you're on to something there. I removed the resolv.conf I had copied and rebooted - it failed to resolve us.pool.ntp.org. I restarted the ntp daemon and it worked. Should I file a bug that way - against the timing aspect? -- Mitch Claborn mitch@claborn.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If I'm not mistaken, your network configuration is DHCP based, isn't it? If it is, you should set RUN_PARALLEL to "no" in /etc/sysconfig/boot; I had too much trouble with network timing related issues for every PC that is configured using DHCP (static IP configurations work pretty well). That does seem to help. Also seems (to me) to confirm my guess that there is just a timing problem in the startup on the NTP daemon. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
