[opensuse] Nvidia driver, major problems
Hi list, - my SuSE11.1 with the latest Nvidia driver (installed via YaST), crashed a few times on me. - so I downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.44-pkg1.run package, switched to runlevel 3 and ran it. Without problems. - however, when I intend to startx, I get: "Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 180.29, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 180.44. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version." Now, I understand what it says...but I sure don't know how to remedy the situation. I would either like to a) get the new driver running, or b)revert to the old .29 driver (I did backup the working xorg.conf) Any and all help is appreciated (this mail was written on a spare machine, sigh...) -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard www.os-academy.dk Novell Certified Linux Professional number 10035701 ------------------------------ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Uninstall the old driver before trying to install the new. Which means zypper rm *nvidia* and only then install the one you downloaded manually. In this case you *might* be able to get away with just removing the old kernel module, but to be on the safe side, I'd delete both rpms if I were you Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You'll need to rmmod the old driver and then insmod the new one or just reboot. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

thank you for your answers. - but I (as root) did "rmmod nvidia", this took out all nvidia modules. Checked with lsmod and so. All gone. Reboot. No good. Same error as stated in my initial mail. Then I remove nvidia modules again. I then run the nvidia installer - as stated above. It builds the kernel module, no errors. Reboot. Using my regular account I go startx. No good, same error as above (API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 180.29 but this NVIDIA...) Any good ideas :-) -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard www.os-academy.dk Novell Certified Linux Professional number 10035701 ------------------------------ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It didn't work... (:-)) I did the zypper rm thing, it reported that it had nothing to do... I just tried it again...I wanted to cite/quote the output to you as it exactly writes. This time, IT WORKED! It removed some 39Mb of files, it said. Then I rebuilt the Nvidia 180.44, no errors. I then typed startx. YOU SAVED MY DAY! Thanks a lot, this goes into my indespenseable book of valuable how-tos! -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard www.os-academy.dk Novell Certified Linux Professional number 10035701 ------------------------------ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You should be nice to zypper, give him a bone, or something, then you wouldn't have to repeat requests ;-) -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Cute. ;) Rajko, as an aside, in 11.1 MOST GL screen savers don't work properly with nVidia or Intel chipsets, freezing the desktop or on running in a small window in the upper left of the screen. Have you or anyone noticed this? Quite a few had this problem awhile ago, and I don't think it's been fixed....I suspect it's in "X". Not recently Fred. I'm moving my stuff to fresh KDE4 installation, where KDE3 will be Just in Case (tm) desktop, so you can imagine that leftovers of problems are no more issue. Freezing desktop, even for a moments, wouldn't be minor one. I usually run KDE 3.5.10 as primary and KDE 4.2.1 as a second session. The hardware is FX5200 with NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.17-pkg0.run picked from ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86 server. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The only problem with nVidia that has plagued ALL hardware, 32 and 64-bit, as been screen savers, and sometimes a game that locks up the desktop. It is probably the driver. I was waiting update for this card few months and nothing was happening, then they released version after version. Before that KDE4 was sluggish to uselessness, opening OpenOffice was call for trouble with Writer and Base. Now everything works fine. What kind of crashes did occur? I ran into an issue with a GeForce 3 freezing the computer hard or even triggering a restart when opening KMails "New Mail"- Dialog, starting Konversation and some similar occasions. The KMail and Konversation crashes where reproducable, that's why I mention them. Regards, Matthias

Hi re crashes..they were rare and random. Rare; 3 - 4 times a week, random; not doing anything particular, they would just come. nature: they would NOT lock up the computer, the keyboard would work, network was ok and all. But even if ctrl+f1 would clearly do something, even the console screen would be messed up and broken. So broken yes, but not hw locked up.
