Fate - we can't all suggest new features!! [ WAS: Re: [opensuse] /dev/disk/by-uuid ? ]
So I decide to open a feature request about the below at
features.opensuse.org for this.
Much to my surprise only OpenSUSE members are allowed to create features.
What's up with that?

All,
I've got a few old machines that I've been upgrading that have /dev/sdaX type entries in /etc/fstab.
I'm in the process of moving them to /dev/disk/by-uuid/* entries
2 questions:
1) Is there a tool for this. I've just done one machine by looking at the symbolic links in that directory, then hand editing the fstab to be correct. Only takes a few minutes, but it is tedious and error prone.
Use udevinfo: udevinfo -q symlink -n /dev/sda2 2>/dev/null with little bash scripting you can get it automatic. JR
Josef,
That seems like that sort of thing that should be part of the distro since going through the yast-partitioner seems like a pretty obtuse way to get it done.
I think I'll go drop the idea into FATE.

Missing man*hours Greg. There was discussion on opensuse-project mail list, and until there will be more people to look at features, there is no much point to open to the every Novell account owner. For now I can do that for you, then you can add comments with details. -- Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, I would appreciate that. That basic request is that one or more simple tools be provided to allow a fstab to be automatically converted from /dev/sdaX nomenclature to one of the preferred methods. Once it exists, I think it should be made available to 11.1 users somehow and the 11.2 install DVDs should tell the user to use it instead of just saying: "You need to boot back into your un-upgraded distro and fix your /etc/fstab" or words to that effect. I simply think that text is unacceptable, and as a fairly experienced OpenSUSE user it has been a royal pain to figure out how to do it. If a tool is out of the question, then a WIKI entry and reference to it from the dialog window asking the user to perform the reconfig is a minimal feature that should be done. FYI: I just "asked to be a member." I assume I will be accepted. If so, I see I'll get a opensuse email address. Why don't you use yours? As Jean solved the feature request issue, while I was writing question how to call feature and what to put in initall description, I'll answer the remainder. On Tuesday 31 March 2009 03:42:14 pm Greg Freemyer wrote:

It is. It is highly recommended to do something that only experienced users can understand what the message talks about, fire up YaST Partitioner, load old fstab, and here I can't say exactly what is next step. Is it, select partition, press edit, change addressing from device name to dev-id, and so on, for each partition, or go back to Installation Proposal screen and Installer will do the rest automatically. I don't have any old system that I can upgrade, so that I can test procedure myself.

In the case of user that has no additional computers, that is catch 22. Not good.

I have a lot of mail lists in my portfolio, and unsubscribe then subscribe would take some time. I use it for non list related emails. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Disagree. The instructions are to abort your upgrade and boot back in to the non-upgraded OS. Once you do that you can access a wiki entry. So the only issue is that it requires Internet access to read the wiki. Even if the machine being upgraded is not on the Internet, I think it is reasonable to expect that a person has Internet access in some way.
