Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. It is eminently fair and for the most part, accurate. I think any inaccuracies could be attributable to unfamiliarity rather than bias. If this reviewer hadn't been what I would call a 'Power-user', and had instead been someone converting from Windows, not only would they probably not have had a successful install, but would have an article that Microsoft would probably have printed in full page ads throughout the world. [opensuse] 11.1 on a thinkpad T500

installed it yesterday on my brand new thinkpad, and most of the basic stuff seems to be working : tested the wired/wireless connection :ok. can write DVD's, sound is ok, hibernation and sleep : ok , sdcard reader : ok, and last but not least, video graphics, weel that's a special case with this laptop, it includes 2 graphic controller : 1 discrete, the ati hd3650 and am integrated controller , intel mobile GM45 express chipset. i knew i wasn't going to get this switchable graphics thing in order... by default, the installation chooses the intel chipset. which works ok, but doesn't give you the power of the ATI. i changed the bios setting to discrete graphics ( swichable off ). when booted into command line, i could run sax and it installed the correct ATI drivers. but the next reboot set me back to the intel chipset, and indeed the bios was back to switchable graphics enabled ? jef peeraer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse] kde4 konqueror will not connect via proxy

The proxy works for firefox but not for konq in 11.0 kde 4. I've tested the proxy via yast and it works fine. Also, other browsers recognise it. Bug? I just notice that there will be nomore kde3 for the upcomming openSUSE 11.2. I don't want to grin. Not necessary. I just wanted to ask here what do you have in kde3.5 and don't find in kde4 and you would like to have. Not to say you will have it but to give info to devs... I stopped using kde4 on 11.1 for problems in the config panel and lack of understanding of the new windows layout. Today I finally installing opensuse 11.1 kde 4.2 in all machines. Q. Using yast software manager to update the system very often I get a curl error and a connection time out. I retry and everything is OK. Everything is working OK but I had to be behind the screen to interact all the time with this connection time outs. I do not remember anything like that previously. [opensuse] Annoying Desktop behaviour of Programmes

Hi all, what is beginning to be quite annoying is working with different Desktops. I have different working groups organised on a desktop each. I often have OpenOffice Writer, Calc and Firefox open on various desktops. When I open up a link on Desktop 1 in Thunderbird, a window opens on the latest FireFox I used prevously; the one on the other desktop I used last. I have to hunt down in which desktop it opened by going to each desktop and activate it. This also happens when I open an OpenOffice document or calc file with konqueror. Closing all apps on the desktops before going to another desktop defeats the purpose of having different desktops - or have I missed the rational behind different desktops. ATI botched a couple of driver releases that not even Stefan could compile for 11.1. The key here I think is 11.1. ATI hasn't released a driver to date that will work with my hardware and 11.1. Anders and others are doing OK with the 9-3 release (although I suspect if they compare the 11.1 fglrx driver performance to that of the Sept. 08 driver running on 11.0 or 10.3 they would be wildly disappointed by the comparison.) The problem is there is no "measuring stick" or a good performing driver that will compile against 11.1. I know in my experience with the 8-10, 8-11, 8-12, and 9-1 fglrx drivers, my graphics performance on my laptop with an X1200/x1300 chipset all the foregoing drivers suffer greater than a 40% performance loss compared against the 8-9 driver. I would like to see the test results of others who think the 9-3 driver is doing OK, comparing (1) the glxgears frame rates w/default window size, and (2) the overall feel and responsiveness of the graphics subsystem against their same hardware running 11.0 or 10.3 with the 8-9 driver. I would be willing to wager their would be a bunch of bruised chins from all the "jaw dropping" that would occur when the performance penalty of the recent ATI drivers is actually measured in black-and-white. It's almost impossible to tell how much of a performance hit you have taken just by looking at the screen and saying "yes, it looks OK" without doing an actual comparison. As for Peter, the only thing I can think of is just to plug libstdc++.so.5 into webpin on 11.1 and see what packages come back and then install those packages to get around his compile problem. The search on 11.1 says the package is provided by the following. Listmates, I'm a bit troubled by the current "Sweep the bug under the rug" philosophy I am seeing all too often with bugzilla. Latest example is: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=488463 Why not fix the easy ones? The point/question being, "What justifies leaving openSuSE broken when the fix is simple?" [opensuse] Two problems remaining after otherwise successful OS upgrade

After I upgraded from v10.3 to v11.1, a number of problems remained, most of which I have succeeded in clearing. Three remain and are driving me up the wall. I would be grateful for any help in dealing with them too: 1) Several apps did not come across when I copied the /home directory to the new installation, because not all their elements are contained in that directory. I have fixed all but two, XMMS and RealPlayer. I'm reasonable confident that I simply need to reinstall them from scratch, but YaST doesn't work. It comes up and lets me search for apps by name, but then craches immediately as soon as I ask for installation of a selected application. I have no idea where to look for the root of this problem. 2) The more bizarre problem lies in the browsers (plural). I can access every website I have tried, except one, which is my own <http://hashkedim.com>. When I try to access it with EITHER Firefox or Konqueror, I get an error message telling me that it is impossible to connect. Going back to v10.3, this problem doesn't exist (it never did appear there). It also doesn't exist in the new v11.1 installation if I add the "www" - <http://www.hashkedim.com>. I would like to understand why two different browsers need the "www" in v11.1 but not in v10.3, but ONLY in this one URL. Now, since yesterday, there's a new kernel, (I need the nVidia version) but because of a dependency, which isn't listed, I can't get that either. Hi list, I've skipped using the built in software management in openSUSE for the past 3-4 releases, as I have been using the 'smart package manager' to do my updates and even dist upgrades. I have had my eyes on libzypp for a while, for it's great performance compared to smart. I have 2 questions for libzypp and the zypper commandline tool: 1. Is there any way to completely and forcefully disable the vendor check ? I now that I can add trusted vendors to the list, but that is not my objective. I rely on the repo priority, and do not wish to use the vendor check feature of libzypp. 2. 'Download first - install after' behavior. I remember someone mentioning a 'secret' unsupported option or configuration for zypp to start installation, only after/if all packages have been downloaded first. I just don't remember what it was. [opensuse] keep alive SSH tunnel after resume

Hi, I'm using port forwarding via SSH tunnel, but if I suspend my machine, the connection hangs after resuming, and I have to rerun the ssh-command on console every time. Hi, for some reason, I need rsyncable source and debug package repos for 11.1. Unfortunately, gwdg.de doesn't provide them anymore. Eberhard told me, that SUSE master server doesn't provide the necessary resources :-(. The .de mirrors I tried, didn't provide rsyncable targets either. How do I solve my problem? After getting a fresh install of 11.1 I'm unable to build any RPMs. It bombs in the %prep stage. I checked the differences between 'rpm' files between my 11.0 and 11.1 box and noticed that I have devel_rpm_build on 11.0 but not 11.1. All, My laptop is running kde 4.2.2 In the taskbar where the knetworkmanager icon is supposed to be, I just have a black square. And it I try to run knetworkmanager manually, nothing happens. I tried deleting, .kde4, but it did not help. Any other ideas? I had begun a thread recently in which I tried to find a good way to carry over my KMail structure from v10.3-KDE3 to v11.1-KDE4, as-is (as closely as possible). This did not seem to be as easy and straightforward a process as I might have hoped. But in the meantime I have come to believe that KDE4 (at least in its present state) is not for me (at least in my own present state) and that I would be better off sticking with KDE3. It seems to me therefore that the most straightforward way to proceed is simply to carry over my home directory from the v10.3 installation to a new v11.1 installation. Because the intent is to retain the existing v10.3 installation on one HD, and put the new v11.1 on another one, my conception of how to do this safely is as follows. I would be exceedingly grateful for any comments that might show up potential pitfalls or misunderstandings. 1) I would set up clean root and home partitions for the new v11.1 using DFSee. 2) Working from the existing v10.3, I would install ext3 on the home partition and mount that partition v10.3. 3) As though I were backing up the v10.3 home partition, I simply copy it in toto to the partition newly made to be the v11.1 home partition. 4) Finally I install v11.1 on the root partition prepared for it, defining the newly populated partition as it /home, and instruct that this /home partition not be formatted. To me, this looks like the perfect way to proceed, and it should leave me with a new system very much like the old one, although there would no doubt be a few apps that need to be replaced. Is there any problem with this? Hi, I now routinely use two computers (both running openSUSE 11.1, both on x86 hardware, though entirely distinct in details) but have only one set of speakers. I would like to have one of these systems send its sound output to the other system rather than to its own sound hardware. I gather this is possible, but haven't been able to find much information on how to exploit the capability. Could someone give me the outline of setting something like this up or point me to some informational materials? Hi list, Ever since I reinstalled the operating system and switched to KDE 4.1.3 from KDE 3.? yesterday I can no longer access my USB flash drive. It registers in My Computer but when I click on it nothing happens. Right clicking doesn't give me the mount option. As far as I know all the updates have been installed. Hi, I just installed the latest Firefox updates to version 3.0.9. Two successive restarts ended in a segmentation fault crashes while restoring the previous session using Tab Mix Plus's session manager functionality. I was going to downgrade back to version 3.0.8 when I noticed that I'd left the Beagle plug-in installed following the eradication of Beagle during the original installation of openSUSE 11.1. So I decided to remove the Beagle Firefox plug-in instead of downgrading Firefox. Following this, Firefox 3.0.9 started up and restored its previous session successfully. When I try it from the command line, I get this error message: "Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.0.9 and 1.9.0.9." I'm running 64 bit OpenSUSE 11.0, but installed the 32 bit Firefox. [opensuse] Cups network printers stuck with URI /dev/null

I have a client with a network of SUSE 11.1 machines. Printers are physically connected to a number of the workstations. CUPS is set up so that all machines can see all other printers. Normally it works good. But then something went wrong on the one machine. Two of the remote printers on it is stuck in the configuration and I cannot remove them. Basic scenario: Server1 : workstation1 : printer1, printer2 workstation2 : printer3, printer4 So, normally Server1 lists printers1-4 in it;s cups and it can print to them. But now, we have on server1 the following: printer1, printer2, working pritner3: Listed, but URI=/dev/null printer4: Listed, but URI=/dev/null. pritner3@workstation2: working printer3@workstation2: working If I shut down the CUPS on workstation2, the two printers with @workstation2 disappears from Server1, but the other two are still there. We even tried to reboot the server, and changed workstation2 to not advertise the printers, but the two printers with URI /dev/null are still there. Server1 is a LTSP server and the local users have one of the defunct printers are default, so this is a bit of a problem, because all thier print jobs disappear into the void. Any idea how I can remove the two remote printers from the server's cups config? I just updated my 11.1 system to the latest, and I get this when I try to start X: X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//extensions/libdri.so undefined symbol: atiddxMiscDixLookupPrivate It seems that the update did mods to my xorg,conf file. I put an earlier one back, but no go. I did see that one thing that was updated was an ati driver for xorg. I am guessing that is the problem, but I am not sure. The rpm that caused this might have been x11-video-fglrxG01-8.582-2.1, as it was newly installed. I also updated the kernel at this time, so there is a new ati-fglrxG01-kmp-pae-8.582_2.6.27.19_3.2-2.1. It that matters. The system is freshly booted after the updates. Anyone else see this? Hi, on my SuSE 10.2 i see a strange behavior of file /root/.wapi/shared_data-ts5-Linux-x86_64-320-10-0 It changes its content without changing inode number, ctime or mtime. Only atime is up to date (due to my reading ?). The affected filesystem is ext3. Is this supposed to be normal ? Does this still happen with the current SuSE version ? How can it happen at all ? Does Mono circumvent the POSIX filesystem interface e.g. by writing directly to blocks of /dev/sda ? ----------------------------------------------- Why i ask: I understand POSIX filesystem semantics the following way: - If the inode was new, then it should have a younger ctime than in the old backup. - If the inode was moved to that place and existed when the backuped inode still existed, then it should have a different inode number. - If the content was overwritten, then mtime should have changed. If mtime was set back to the old timestamp later, then ctime should have been set to the time when this happened. ctime is supposed not to be adjustable freely. All other files in my backup seem to follow those rules. (POSIX promises persistence of "file serial numbers" actually only for a single session. But that filesytem was not unmounted since the old backup was made, and ext3 keeps inode numbers persistent, anyway.) It is not urgent to me to back up a file with Mono stuff which i understand is used for zmd. But i am alarmed by the covert content change which puts in question the faster one of my two incremental backup strategies. The content change was detected by comparing a backup of february with the file's content as it is now. Not much doubt possible. The backup is on BD-RE with its expensive error checking and correction features. Any content alteration on that media should cause an i/o error. The slower backup strategy compares file contents of backup and disk. It detects the covert content change but it has severe drawbacks with BD media and 100+ sessions on them. So the fast backup strategy which only compares inode numbers and timestamps is very valuable to me. Now i would like to learn how it got fooled. [opensuse] corrupt root partition question

Ok I have a question regarding the root partition corrupting under openSUSE 11.1 on three different machines. Over night these machines would go from their root partition being less than 50% full to being completely full, but nothing was installed, nothing was changed, and I know the tmp directories are not filling it up because I have cron set up to clear /tmp once a day and /var/tmp every three days at midnight. To be sure I checked to see if cron was still running and didn't have an error, that was fine, so I went in and cleared the tmp directories by hand and did df -h to see if that made a difference and it was still saying 100% full. The first two times this happened I did a clean install after fsk could change anything. Now that this has happened a third time it is looking less like a coincidence and more like a serious problem. Hi Guys, I would like to use yum on 11.1 - specifically yum-utils and the ability to use yum localinstall, which I find extremely handy and which zypper does not support. (Yes, I know "You should just use zypper!" and "smart is better" and "why would you ever want to use yum on Suse?" and all those wonder things, but the bottom line is that there is still no way for zypper to install a local rpm and handle the dependencies from the repos. Plus, I like yum.) yum is not in 11.1 repo, and seems to have been removed due to python being updated to 2.6 which does not play well with yum. You can still get yum from the 11.0 repo, but there are the below issues trying to get it to work with python 11.0 repo: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/repo/oss/suse/i586/yum-3.2.1… Errors when installing as it needs Python < 2.4 and 2.6 is installed with Suse 11.1 I tried a later version of Yum (3.2.22), for RHEL 5.0 from Pbone, but it still required Python < 2.4 and had other dependency isssue as well. No problem, let's just have both Python 2.4 and 2.6 installed right? I downloaded Python and built Python 2.4 from http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.4.6/ ./configure ./make I normally try to run checkinstall to make an rpm rather than 'make install' - but this had a bug too, it just need a directory to be manually created. (What the heck is up with checkinstall having these issues lately?) mkdir -p /usr/local/lib/python2.4/config checkinstall You now have a Python 2.4 RPM - yeah! And it looks good: Callandor:~ # rpm -qpl Python-2.4.6-1.i386.rpm | less Callandor:~ # rpm -Uvh yum-3.2.14-15.1.i586.rpm error: Failed dependencies: python-gpgme is needed by yum-3.2.14-15.1.i586 python < 2.6 is needed by yum-3.2.14-15.1.i586 I installed python-gpgme which resolved that dependency and then just forced the install as Python 2.4 exists: rpm -ivh --nodeps yum-3.2.14-15.1.i586.rpm Callandor:~ #ln -s /usr/local/bin/python2.4 /usr/bin/python2.4 Callandor:~ # python -V Python 2.4.6 Callandor:~ # python2.6 -V Python 2.6 I edited /usr/bin/yum to specify using 2.4.6, which it is. However, yum is still not working with python: Callandor:~ # yum There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named yum Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. I had this error the last time when I called k3b from a remote system with sudo. The ownership of ~/.ICEauthority got changed to root and the next application could not open it, access rights being 600. But when I do I'm getting the following error when I choose 'Software Management' in Yast. "There was an error in the repository initialization. 'openSUSE_10.3': Parse error" How do I fix this? The for loop is completely fine for the task at hand. I wanted to point out that echo -e "$i\t$(cat $i)" is dangerous, should better be avoided, and written as echo -n "$i\t" ; cat $i That way you don't slurp the whole content of $i (several megs, maybe gigs if you would start a directory above), just to get a shell string where you prepend some bytes -- doubling the memory usage at this time -- to get a new string that is finally just output. You can let cat do the output itself, no need to capture it first. Hi, We have openSUSE 11.0 with the latest patch level and using NFS automounter with user, group and automount entries in LDAP. Since a patch update some 2-3 weeks agou the automounter dies frequently. [opensuse] Screen blanking/locking and 11.1

This weekend I did a clean install of 11.1 and updated to KDE 4.2.2 Factory. Things are working great except for one thing... for some reason the screensaver starts after a fixed time of about 6 minutes. I've tinkered with the screensaver settings, and it's definitely the screensaver kicking in - if I set it to a specific screensaver type, that selected screensaver is what comes on in 6 minutes of inactivity. When the screensaver is on, the desktop is password locked. In Configure Desktop > Desktop > Screensaver, the screensaver is set to OFF. Setting it to ON, and changing the delay start time has no impact on the 6 minute delay. After 6 minutes, the screensaver starts regardless of the value in the "After" field. In Configure Desktop > Display > Power Control, Enable display power management is set to OFF. This seems to be working correctly as the screen is not placed into standby mode. In Configure Desktop > Advanced > Power Management, Lock screen is set to OFF, PowerDevil is set to OFF. After updating from KDE 4.1 to KDE 4.2.2 Factory I removed the plasmarc config files and forced a rebuild of the desktop config on the off chance this might fix the screenblanking thing. This did not help. There was a discussion on the list here a while back about an almost identical problem. I've read that thread, and tried the suggestions there - nothing suggested worked. The thread was mainly about getting screensavers working again in KDE3 instead of only having screen blanking. (solutions including linking KDE3 screensaver directories etc. t get screensavers working again) Does anyone have any ideas of what else I can try to convince 11.1 that I do not want my screen locked and I do not want screensavers to come on automatically after a 6 minute timeout? [opensuse] Mandy 7.2 fires right up after 3-4 years sitting on a shelf!

Listmates, Had to share this somewhat comical but painfully fun event. Long ago I retired my mandrake 7.2 (odyssey) server and the box had gone through a number of changes since I yanked the 40G IBM Deskstar drive out of it after (??) 4 years of continual service. The network card was new, the video card was new, but despite the changes, when I put the drive back into the box - 7.2 fired right up! Remember linuxconf? Remember when you were not even presented with a list of potential modules to load, but instead had to look in /lib/modules/<kernel> just to find something that looked close like the 3c90x.ko module to get a 3c950 card running? Recall the old drakes - XFdrake, menudrake, etc.? Man what a trip down memory lane and talk about cobweb filled memories. The entire ordeal was prompted by a new lady that I hired today needing a box put together on the quick. I wasn't going to sacrifice the raid array in the box or the spare 250G drive in there that I still had not had time to parse through to make sure I wasn't throwing anything important away. Thus, the old 40G was enlisted to pull another tour of duty, and... for the first time in its 8 year life, it was spoon fed -- windows.... yuk! So we bid a fair adieu to mandy 7.2, and 12 hours later had a fully updated XP install, complete with a slew of the little utilities I can't live without (fileMenuTools, FMview, mysql gui tools, etc...) and topped off with a full MS Office, OpenOffice, Gimp, PaintShop Pro, and imagemagick install with all updates through SP3 to current installed. (What a painful process) The more you have to go back a tinker with windows, the more you appreciate the elegance of Linux and the distribution Novell has put together. The trip down memory lane with mandy 7.2 and KDE 2 also showed just how far KDE3 had come since the early days. We can only hope that KDE4 can achieve as much. (P.S. Hi all! I was wondering if anyone else was having problems writing files to an ACL enabled NFS mount? I've got 4 boxes: - server01 is running 11.0 and is my file server - server02 is running 11.0 - workstation01 has been running 11.1 since the day it was released - workstation02 is a newly loaded 11.1 test machine All machines are fully patched. server01's /etc/exports file has the following entry: /data *(rw,no_root_squash,sync,no_subtree_check) The fstab entry for the folder is: /dev/sda3 /data ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 I'm also sharing the /data folder through Samba. Security on the /data folder has always been: server01:/ # getfacl data # file: data # owner: root # group: root user::rwx user:ken:rwx group::rwx mask::rwx other::r-x The other three machines have the share mounted on /data with the default NFS settings. All machines (except the new one) have been in this basic configuration since well before 10.x with the workstation running the latest release and the servers usually one release behind. I can't tell you exactly when, but within the last couple of months when I try to do anything that would write to the share from the 11.1 boxes, I get an error message like: cp: cannot create regular file test.txt: invalid argument But when I look, the directory shows that the file has been created with a 0K file size, and of course it is empty. And it doesn't matter if I am logged in as myself or as ROOT. I get the same error. The other 11.0 box doesn't seem to suffer from the same issue. I can copy files with it all day long. I can also copy files from the 11.1 boxes to the Samba share without a problem. Now, if I remove the "default" ACL entries, but keep the regular ones, I regain the ability to write to this folder using the 11.1 boxes. But I loose some control over how ACLs are applied to newly created files, and this becomes an issue for the other users that share this data. So, my question is, am I alone in this issue, or are others having the same problem? Ken

I spent quite a bit of time comparing Ubuntu 9.04, Gnome on openSUSE 11.1, and KDE 4.2 11.1. I wasn't successful in getting Gnome to work with the Intel 3945 wifi, no matter what I did nor how I did it in Ubuntu. It did work in Gnome on openSUSE 11.1, however. ALL installs were clean....formatted partitions. The lack of configurability in Gnome is VERY apparent when one has been using KDE 3.5 AND newer for a long time. Gnome is VASTLY inferior to KDE 4.2, even though it's not a finished product yet. Yes, there are some things that are better....like a LOT of screen savers and they just work, which is not true of KDE 4.2. Now, as to the differences between Ubuntu/Kubuntu and openSUSE. A friend and writer recently said something to the effect that in Linux, Ubuntu is like an old VW and openSUSE 11.1 is like a Cadillac. I agree. The only problem is, that the "Cadillac" needs to be as easy to install and setup as the "VW" is. THEN, openSUSE will really have something to market! Ran into a a couple of related bugs recently and want to get some feedback on whether they are SuSE specific, or if they are fundamental design flaws in linux, or what. Short description: * had/have working SuSE11.0 sys with 1 visible SAS-based disk that the OS had labeled "sda". I could tell it was labeled 'sda' by looking in the grub menu where it instructed linux to boot from sda3, and also by typing "fdisk -l". * Drives were mounted with Labels, as is my custom /=Root, /var=Var, etc. (months pass) * Needed big scratch space, so hotpluged a 1TB SATA into the controller Drive came up as 'sdb', I formatted & used it -- even added a working entry in /etc/fstab to hold the common non-default mount options (logbufs, noatime) Life was fine until a few weeks later I rebooted. System wouldn't boot. No valid root partition found at "sda3", please specify a valid root partition. Well I hadn't changed anything in terms of moving the root partition and no boot options would work (failsafe, nothing). Then I wondered if I had been <sarcasm>"blessed"</sarcasm> by some magical randomizing device-name manager due to the new disk I plugged in. I unplugged the new drive and it still didn't boot, but got further. Now it failed "fsck". At least that dumped me into single-abuser root mode where I found that 'fsck' was trying to call the "dummy script" _fsck.xfs_ (which does nothing other than test that the device it is asked to check, 'exists'. (but that was failing!) It seems fsck doesn't understand "noauto" (it used to!) -- and now tries to force a check and disk-modification (that would happen if it was the old fsck operating on an ext-type file system and it found correctable errors). But "noauto" used to mean (doesn't it still?) _manual_ mount only! Why would fsck try to force-check a disk that was labeled 'noauto' because it might not even be present? After commenting out the fstab line, altogether, the system booted. Fsck no longer was passing a non-existent device to "fsck.xfs" that simply checked for 'existance' -- so it no longer returned an error and the system was allowed to boot up normally rather than forcing me into 'single-abuser' mode to "fix" the problem of my "manually mounted disk" not being "fsck-able" on boot. Grrrr. AAARRRRGGGG...&& GRRRRRR.... Stupid machine... this is the blessing of "automation" that is being forced on me to make my life 'easier' -- which rarely does make it easier and isn't even implemented right on multiple levels!!! Grrrr.... ;^)....this is so "dorky" >>> Please NOTE<<<: so no one gets defensive here, I'm not mad or angry, or upset (it's just a machine), but at worst, "frustrated", but really mostly amused at the machine's clumsy attempts to "help me", only to make things worse and less reliable than before! So 2 bugs: 1) Why are my drives being switch around randomly? It's a feature, right? I DO use labels in my fstab -- but SUSE doesn't use labels for 'format -l', smartd, hdparm-settings-by-device, NOR, **most importantly**, does it use the software generated labels in the boot files (lilo or grub) -- and those are the real sticklers. I've long complained about the stupidity of forcing all devices to be 'floating' and dynamic (or defaulting to floating and dynamic) and this illustrates why. Question is, is this a SuSE only bug, or is this the whole concept of dynamic device management (it bites me on network setups as well, though there seem to be ways to work around it there and force a specific device to stay 'eth0', or 'eth1'... but that doesn't happen by default either and is only a problem if you have multiple ethernet cards and want to make sure your routing and firewall settings protect and route to the correct device. But I really need to make sure that hot-plugging a hard-disk in doesn't change the boot-disk because grub/lilo (among other utils that prefer or use hardware-device names and not software-names). And 2nd, more minor bug... why is fstab forcing an fsck on a drive not marked for mounting (i.e. marked 'noauto')? This is a regression. I can file a routine bug for the 2nd, but the 1st problem I don't even know where I'd start to file the bug against what -- because the whole system of dynamic software-naming of devices, while 'well intentioned' and desirable for dynamic software volumes, isn't really desirable for fixed-boot drives that important pieces (booting et al.) of the current software doesn't support being 'dynamic' in any way. So where would, or could, or should the 2nd problem be addressed? And if someone tells me I should submit a patch for all affected pieces of software, may the great 'foo bird' come to you and doodoo on you! I jut did a fresh install of 11.1 and now have a 'Floppy Drive' item in Nautilus Places (left-side panel). How do I remove this? I have no floppy drive. Listmates, A caution to the curious. Never.. Ever... use a for loop and cat to attempt to look at *all* the values for a process in /proc. Bad things happen on 11.0 (probably all versions). I wanted to look at the values for a bash shell running in konsole as process 24214 so I did: for i in $(find /proc/24214 -type f); do echo -e "$i\t$(cat $i)"; done The system slowed to a crawl... I ended up having to just shut the box down to resolve the issue. ps ax or ps -elf were not helpful in locating the errant process (I'm sure the info was there, but not something I recognized). kde started behaving like windows on a bad day with execution lagging a good 15 secs. behind input. (you know, 'click input' wait...wait.. button presses) It was really a perplexing situation. No amount of ctrl+c, break, ctrl+x or the like would kill the monster I had unleashed. My questions is "what happened?" What caused the meltdown that resulted from my use of cat? I want to know so I don't do it again. Hi list, - I'm on SuSE11.1 with KDE 4.2.1 release 106. - my Knetworkmanager doesn't start by itself, I need to (using my ordinary account) to open up a shell and do "knetworkmanager". This causes knm to fire up, find my accesspoint and all is good. Any ideas? [opensuse] Grub trouble...zapped 2nd boot stage

Hi listmates, - Grup says "stage 1.5", error 17 and halts. - this happens because I had a SuSE partition on a freinds laptop alongside Vista. The MBR (as I see it) contains a small programme that points to the real GRUP booter on something like hda2, I believe. My dear freind zapped the SuSE installation by having MS formatting it. But now, of course, the machine never reaches the 2nd stage of the GRUB loader...I wish to remedy it. a) can I do that using, say Knoppix or SuSE live? b) Re-install a SUSE into that partion and go from there? c) Enter any fancey GRUP commands? d) Vista repair or something, the restore partition is still present? Hello SuSE people, Seems I have an ancient 8GB hard drive which is failing. At least smart seems to think so. New hard drive on it's way. All properly backed up to my external "back up" drive with rsync. I know this has been discussed a million times on this list but old stupid never paid much attention.So now that I am faced with this realiity of life and computers, how do I proceed? Put in the new hard drive replacement, then what? Must be formatted, OK that's a no-brainer. Must I partition it to match the old drive for rsync? (home,var, usr) are all separate partitions. (same size? larger?) Will rsync sort it all out? Is there a how-to / wiki page somewhere that can give some guidance? Greetings fellow listers. I'm hoping that someone here can tell me how to make the Shared Folder function in VirtualBox work with a Linux guest running on an OpenSUSE 11.0 host. I've got it working perfectly with a Windows Guest, but the Kubuntu Hardy guest that I also have installed doesn't seem to see the Shared Folders in VBOXSVR. I have no trouble seeing a Samba server running outside of VirtualBox on the same laptop and can access my host Linux filesystem that way, but I'd like to be able to do it through the Shared Folder mechanism built into VirtualBox. Has anyone been able to do this? If so, can you give me some pointers? Hi, I recently tried to upgrade my Samsung ML-1450 printer driver and in the process lost printing altogether. I uninstalled the driver but have not recovered printing. When I open Yast -> Hardware -> Printer I simply get this message: "There is no print queue". Clicking Add gets "No Connection Selected" and there is none listed. Using the Connection Wizard get's me nowhere. Clicking on Printers in CUPS does nothing either. Can someone help me here? Hello: I would like to edit a postscript file using pstops. According to its manual -p option sets the (output) pape size, eg -pa4 for A4, -pa5 for A5 etc. When I use a command like this: > pstops -pa5 1:0@1$0,-5cm$ orig.ps new.ps I expect that the content is moved 5cm downward and the new paper size is A5 in new.ps. The content is moved, but the paper size is not set to A5. It seems that pstops ignores -pa5 option. I also tried to use -w420 -h595 options (which set the width and height of the output paper in points) but they are ignored too. My questions: Is this a known bug or am I missing something? I am using openSUSE 10.3 with KDE 3.5.10. And how can I check the paper dimensions of a postcript file (command line)? So far I opened them with kpdf. [opensuse] yum, python 2.6 and Suse 11.1 - A sad tale

Hi Guys, I would like to use yum on 11.1 - specifically yum-utils and the ability to use yum localinstall, which I find extremely handy and which zypper does not support. (Yes, I know "You should just use zypper!" and "smart is better" and "why would you ever want to use yum on Suse?" and all those wonder things, but the bottom line is that there is still no way for zypper to install a local rpm and handle the dependencies from the repos. Plus, I like yum.) yum is not in 11.1 repo, and seems to have been removed due to python being updated to 2.6 which does not play well with yum. You can still get yum from the 11.0 repo, but there are the below issues trying to get it to work with python 11.0 repo: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/repo/oss/suse/i586/yum-3.2.1… Errors when installing as it needs Python < 2.4 and 2.6 is installed with Suse 11.1 I tried a later version of Yum (3.2.22), for RHEL 5.0 from Pbone, but it still required Python < 2.4 and had other dependency isssue as well. No problem, let's just have both Python 2.4 and 2.6 installed right? I downloaded Python and built Python 2.4 from http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.4.6/ ./configure ./make I normally try to run checkinstall to make an rpm rather than 'make install' - but this had a bug too, it just need a directory to be manually created. (What the heck is up with checkinstall having these issues lately?) mkdir -p /usr/local/lib/python2.4/config checkinstall You now have a Python 2.4 RPM - yeah! And it looks good: Callandor:~ # rpm -qpl Python-2.4.6-1.i386.rpm | less Callandor:~ # rpm -Uvh yum-3.2.14-15.1.i586.rpm error: Failed dependencies: python-gpgme is needed by yum-3.2.14-15.1.i586 python < 2.6 is needed by yum-3.2.14-15.1.i586 I installed python-gpgme which resolved that dependency and then just forced the install as Python 2.4 exists: rpm -ivh --nodeps yum-3.2.14-15.1.i586.rpm Callandor:~ #ln -s /usr/local/bin/python2.4 /usr/bin/python2.4 Callandor:~ # python -V Python 2.4.6 Callandor:~ # python2.6 -V Python 2.6 I edited /usr/bin/yum to specify using 2.4.6, which it is. However, yum is still not working with python: Callandor:~ # yum There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named yum Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. It's possible that the above module doesn't match the current version of Python, which is: 2.4.6 (#1, Apr 25 2009, 08:25:54) [GCC 4.3.2 [gcc-4_3-branch revision 141291]] If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to the yum faq at: http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq I found this there, but honestly it is not too helpful http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq#Q7 I tried importing yum in python, no errors but the same issue exists. I see many complaints about KDE 4 on the Suse list. Please, if you are using KDE 4.2 and you are experiencing any reproducible bug, either file it or start a new thread about the bug and CC me in the thread. KDE 4.2 was the first KDE 4 release meant for end users and if you are having issues, then it is a bug that KDE wants fixed. I should mention that my Opensuse install is still KDE 3.5 (11.0) because Suse really messes with KDE 4 and I personally don't like it. So I will triage KDE 4.2 issues on another distro, to help determine if your bug is a KDE issue, or an Opensuse issue. [opensuse] Yast Softare Management crashes

Anyone else having this problem? When I go to use Yast Software Management it goes through the repo refresh and crashes w/ this error: YaST got signal 11 at YCP file /usr/share/YaST2/clients/inst_packages.ycp:36 /sbin/yast2: line 421: 25060 Segmentation fault $ybindir/y2base $module "$@" "$SELECTED_GUI" $ Any ideas? [opensuse] install fglrx 9.3/9.4 without sax2

I have tried fglrx 9.3 earlier and something confused me. I have followed the instruction in wiki of opensuse to install 9.3, but found that it is point out "Do Not to Use sax2" in the manual published from ati in 9.3 and 9.4. I scrutinized the wiki later and found it is said this, too. The manual from ati said only to use "aticonifg --initial", but my xorg.conf is already exist and the word "fglrx" is already in the configuration file.(it is generateed by sax2 in the earlier driver) It is seemingly that aticonfig just echo "word fglrx is found" and did nothing to my xorg.conf. The purpose of not using sax2 is to avoid it rewriting xorg.conf in its way, but if aticonfig remains the xorg.conf wrote by sax2 earlier, dose the trick not using sax2 still work? In fact, I am querying if aticonfig dose really not rewrite xorg.conf if word "fglrx" is found in xorg.conf. And what proper route should I follow when install fglrx 9.3 from .run? [opensuse] Bug "NEW" since years ...

Dear listmembers, since 2 years (!!!) the bug 335267 is open and has not been assigned to anybody - still "NEW". Every other time another person is adding to it, at no reaction. The bug is kept going from openSUSE 10.3 and arrived happily at 11.1 in the meantime. I do not think this is the way it ought to go - could some friendly person at Novell tell at least whether this is a "wontfix" or whatever? I cannot do more than investing time and support facts, because as I wrote the issue goes beyond my capabilities. Thank you Liebe Liste, seit mittlerweile 2 Jahren (!!!) ist der Bug 335267 offen und wurde bisher niemandem zugeordnet - immer noch "NEW" Immer wieder hängt jemand etwas an - aber es gibt keinerlei Reaktion. Der Fehler hat sich jetzt von der 10.3 fröhlich bis zur 11.1 vorgearbeitet. I glaube nicht, daß das der Weg ist, wie es laufen sollte - könnte ein netter Kollege bei Novell zumindest klären, ob das ein "wontfix" oder wie auch immer ist? hi all, We face a problem when snycing the http://www2.ati.com/suse/ since this repository is not browsable. I am from LUG, USTC (University of Science and Technology of China). We began to maintain a server of opensuse repositories serving several universities in China from last semester, and we are trying to sync more third-party repositories to supplement the svelte major repositories since packages such as vlc and drivers is almost pre-requisite for majority opensuse users, and it is too slow to visit the abroad repositories. The problem we faced is just as the note on the wiki: http://www2.ati.com/suse/ is not browsable. I have searched for some previous mailinglist archive, just found one in Feb, 2008: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-softwaremgmt/2008-02/msg00007.html with the same question but no solution appended. I am sorry that I don't know where to ask the question (there has been no reply of the thread in Feb, 2008 in mailinglist opensuse-softwaremgmt), so I post it here, hope someone can help.
