Does anyone know if SUSE plans to release a version of OpenOffice with GStreamer? Here is some history from an OpenOffice list discussion. Cheers, Bob Since wav files and other media play fine using OpenOffice under XP I think it would be most critical to get this functionality working under Linux. However, something in 10.2, or 64bit, or perhaps dual core, really doesn't seem right for me. BTW, the system I have (and therefore recommend that Linux users stay away from!) is a Toshiba Satellite A105 4324. The compiz-fusion for 10.3 are in cyberorg SUSEFactory repository instead of 10.2. 10.2 versions have too many dependency problems. The NVIDIA drivers show up in Yast now, but they are for the wrong kernel version. I did install the NVIDIA 100.14.11 driver with no problem. Everything worked upto the sudo nvidia-xconfig –composite –allow-glx-with-composite –render-accel – add-argb-glx-visuals It comes back with invalid option -composite. Guess it is because of not having the susefied nvidia drivers for 10.3. Maybe in the near future. [opensuse] Krdc (or kdm) problems

I use krdc (Xvnc) to log in to remote desktop machine. Recently, I noticed that it stopped working. After I get remote login screen and enter userid and password, I get an error message saying that the session is interrupted by remote VNC server. After that, the session breaks. It seems that this started to happen only after the latest kde update to version 3.5.7-64.1, but I am not sure, since I update kde more frequently then I login remotely :-) I experimented a little and found out that when I change login manager on the remote machine from kdm to xdm everything works fine again. This makes me beleive that the problem is with the newest kdm. Also, it seems that the problem is easy to reproduce - I tried it on several machines with the same result. Is there anybody with the same experience or it is just me? I couldn't find any references on this list nor on google. I am not happy with changing the default login manager just to be able to login remotely. Is there another known workaround for this problem? [opensuse] Mouse problem

I had a power outage yesterday which caused my mouse to have a 3-5 second delay in moving and responding to a keypress. I did a repair using the CD but this did not help. I noticed that the mouse Nice was set to -5. I wonder if someone could check to see if this is a normal setting for the mouse? I have Suse 10.2. Thanks for any help you can offer. Hello All, The title kinda sez it all. I installed openSuSE 64 bit on a "homebrew" with a 3.2 GHz P4 ECS P4M800PRO-M MB with 2 GB of ram, 80 G SATA drive. It was installed as dualboot witth Vista Home premium. I have used SuSE since 6.4 off and on and used it heavily from 7.1 to 9.3. Then work forced me back to learn WinXP Pro and now Vista. I have installed 10.0, 10.2 on other machines prior to installing 10.2 default on this box. Originally I was using the on-board Realtek NIC, wired. I rarely used 10.2 and it sailed along effortless. I moved to a new residence and had to go wireless. My researched suggested RaLink RT2561 as compatible with both Linux and Vista, so I bought a card based on that chipset. Vista worked right away. It took some time to get it working under Linux. Then on Friday, I decided to try Linspire 2.0 LiveCD which failed on this box. Every since then the RaLink wireless PCI appears removed to the Linux network under 10.2. If I run lspci -v the card is there, so it is seen by the kernel. I decided to go with driverloader and it helps but no cigar. A long story to ask this simple question. I want to go back to 32 bit. How? Wipe it clean and start from scratch, realizing I still will have the Ralink PCI card (RT61), and can the 64bit be downgraded to 32 bit? Much help appreciated. If this has already been answered in a thread somewhere, please forgive me. I have not found any 32bit software that causes any problem, when used properly, ie: firefox. iianm, x86_64 is backward compatable with x86_32, must be anyway. You say you are running 32bit on a 64bit arch (I don't know why, it's like having 4GB of memory and leaving 2GB in the desk drawer. ~~~~~~ Only because I've read that there is more 32 bit software written out there and have read the problems *other* folks have been having on the 64 bit systems, but either or is fine with me. [opensuse] Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter and NetworkManager

Hi all, I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite laptop (A215-S4807), and am dual-booting Vista and OpenSUSE 10.2. The laptop has an Atheros AR5007EG wireless NIC. After searching around, I tried installing the ndiswrapper module and the windows drivers, and 'ndiswrapper -l' states that everything is okay. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get the connection to work. I'm new to setting up a wireless connetion in linux, so I'm not sure if the driver isn't working correctly, or if I'm just not setting up the connection correctly. 'iwconfig' shows wlan0, so I try: >iwconfig wlan0 essid "my_network_name" after which 'iwconfig wlan0' shows signal strength, etc. I then try: >ifconfig wlan0 up >ifup wlan0 I get a warning that NetworkManager is being notified to set up the DHCP connection, but I don't seem to actually connect -- I can open up a browser and I just get a 'page not found' error. What should I be doing to test this connection? Also, the NetworkManager icon in the system tray still says that there is a connection to eth0, not wlan0. I know, it sounds a bit like a pub with no beer, but.... I've installed VMWare on my OpenSuse 10.2 and it went up like a charm. I have two ethernet cards on the machine, and want to give one to the host and oune to the guest via bridging. Everything is fine and works as expected if I bring the interface up manually via ifconfig eth1 up on the command line. If I issue an ifup eth1 it complains that it can find no configuration for the interface. Is there a canonical way of bringing it up so that it can survive to a restart? openSuse 10.2 2.6.18.8-0.5-default #1 SMP Fri Jun 22 12:17:53 UTC 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux Is compress/uncompress really not available in the distro? I went to install it and Yast Software Management won't show me any package that either provides or is named "compress". Oddly, the man pages are installed. Yes, I know compress is a lame, old program. But, I'm working with some .Z files from a customer and the normally cooperative zcat objects to decompressing and displaying them. Can anyone tell me where to find current source for compress? I found a web site with some source labelled 4.3d from 1990. "$@(#) compress.c,v 4.3d 90/01/18 03:00:00" Is this current? I really want to try 64 bit again in the future. I dont know enough about it to tell the difference right now. I don't run a lot of media apps or high graphics apps. BTW, i "re-installed - ran make, make install for the RT61- one more time and it came back. Something was suddenly interfering with it. I am now responding o this email under 10.2 using the ralink card so Phillip appears to be right. I am just no sure if down the road, I will encounter issues. I know everyone has an opinion, so let's not go there. I just think I want to go back to 32 bit, as most of my experience has been with it. I am not a techie by training, I am a physician, so I'm not as savvy as most. Thanks, since I don't have much to loose, I agree, go back to clean install of 32 bit. I know I can use atheros card without problem. I already have a box with a card based on it. I choose the ralink for reported 64 bit usage. Acrobat Reader - which is is the only PDF reader that allows filling PDF forms in Linux (neither kpdf or evince even tries to work) - simply refuses to save form data. It only saves the empty form. According to <http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=328647&sliceId=2> we need to use another version of the reader, called "standard", which I assume is not free (as in beer). Or, alternatively, the form owner has to generate a "rights-enabled PDF form" using "Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions", which I think it is a server solution. Ie, works online somehow. We have tried generating our own forms to try this. Using OO-writer we can create a form. If this form is exported to PDF, the resulting PDF is a form with the proper fields, but acroread gives the warning that form data can not be saved, the same result as we knew. However, one of the options when generating the PDF in OO is precisely in which way I want the data to be saved later. The reader does not respect this, but there is no other reader in Linux that can even edit forms. So... is there any other PDF reader in Linux that allows editing and saving PDF forms? An open one. Are there plans to add that capability to the existing or new viewers? [opensuse] 10.3 install repositories

Early on in the installation a prompt asks if you would like to have the repositories added. I think it may be a big mistake to say yes as this easily increases the time for an install to 4-6 times. I have also seen hangs and multiple times when it goes out to collect information over the net which becomes very painful. Also, as a result, i think, of making this choice the prompts telling me what is happening during install become nonsense. That is, when the prompt says things like: -> Configure Display Manager or later -> Users, instead I wait for an hour while the its downloading information from a repository. I see this happening over and over again during a single installation. Probably 6-8 times it's collection what appears to be the same information. Ok, I messed up and had my IDE harddrive set for slave. After quite a long tme a small one line message warned me that no harddrive was present. However, I went on for grins and it then told the installation to install the repositories. Before the actual hard failure where the file system would be written a lot of time passed. I think it would have been better to have checked early on for a proper harddrive and if not present then abort. [opensuse] postfix isn't accepting connections anymore. Any changes to postfix?

Dear list, I ran out of ideas. My postfix installation on a opensuse 10.0 isn't accepting connections anymore. Out of sudden!! I didn't change anything (last what I did was using the apt upgrades for apache and php the day before but there can't be any relation I guess). While port 25 is dead submission port 587 is working as expected. Log files are still growing since spammers were rejected (mail and mail.info). I tried everything I could think of (in my panic including a restart of the machine :-x) - turned firewall in yast on/off - tried with telnet remote and from localhost - googled the lines of the log files Is there anything recent I should know about postfix?? Is there a heavy spam attack? But it's not slow it isn't working anymore...Webserver and cyrus imap is running as it should. Downloaded the 64 bit suse 10.3 beta1 via torrent. After 3 days of downloading, I can burn the dvd, md5 checks OK, but, machine will not boot from it. Burned another, same thing. I can read the files on the disk, just not boot from it. Is this a bug or is there something special with this dvd. Can anyone please check and see if fish protocol is working in the 10.3 betas. In 10.2 IIRC it does not work properly with a kernel greater than 2.6.20 or so. It seems to be some interaction between fish in the kernel, as the original kernel works fine, and it is not limited to openSUSE, see http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=145123 for more info. I'm using SuSE9.3 with firefox 1.5 Last week I connected to a citrix session at the office. this week when I try to open an application from there I get : I get a "you have not chosen to trust "Verisign Class 3 Secure Server CA", the issues of the server's security certificate. - I get the same error from seamonkey and Konqueror redirects the asp to firefox Today when I try and get to any secure site I get a "Error establishing an encrypted connection to *****.com Error Code -8075." I have just changed (fresh install) my main production system from 10.1 to 10.2 (Big Mistake!!! but that's another issue). In the process of restoring my original OpenOffice.org configurations I noticed that many of the previously available fonts were not accessible, even though I had reinstalled all of them on 10.2. When I searched for the location of truetype fonts on the system, I found a hodge-podge of various, sometimes duplicated, truetype fonts installed (not soft links) in the following directories: /usr/local/share/fonts /usr/share/fonts/truetype /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype The OpenOffice.org configuration is easy to fix, but does anyone know why fonts are scattered around in this apparently disorganized fashion? Windows may not have a lot going for it, but at least application developers and users can be reasonably confident of finding all installed fonts in one known location. Dave

[opensuse] Install or Update?

I'm keen to try 10.3 beta 1, because I've heard that my sound card driver will be built into the kernel, and I've had no luck getting sound working no this machine by any other means. I downloaded the ISO and burned a DVD, and all seems well, but I'm puzzled about an installation option. I want to be sure that I'll be able to boot my current 10.2 kernel, in case of problems with the beta, because disregarding the sound issue, everything else seems to be pretty well sorted out. I wouldn't want to be unable to access my email store, for example. When I selected the update option, after much checking and evaluating, the installer presented an empty list of installations that could be updated. Checking the "show all partitions" checkbox revealed three. However, I was reluctant to update something without knowing for sure what would happen as a result. If I tell it to do a new installation -- not an update -- will that still leave the old versions available in GRUB? Will I still be able to choose to boot to 10.2.<whatever>, or will a new installation make _everything_ new? Hi all I have tried to upgrade Klamav using the wizard to download and recompile it automatically, but it seems that I don't have installed the libraries to do so. Initially when installed openSUSE I didn't install any development tool, but it seems is necessary now, in yast I have surfed in the patterns and have selected gcc++ libraries but it seems is not enough... what libraries i must install in order to recompiling.... [opensuse] Services start order affecting shutdown?

Hi, I have a machine that is cycled once a day. On the shutdown of the machine I notice that amavisd-new has to be given a KILL signal by the system after it fails to end after the system has given it a TERM signal. I am wondering whether my recent foray into Yast:System:System Services has something to do with it as I was having issues with ClamAv. I no longer have a problem with ClamAv and everything I disabled has been re-enabled but I am wondering if the order I did it in is important ie where there is a 'parent' and 'children' processes ie amavisd as a parent and Spamassassin, ClamAv are the child processes. Should the parent processes be started first or the child ones ie start amavisd before or after spamd and clam? Should I remember it like real life ie you can't have kids without parents so parents have to be started first? Hi all, I have tried to upgrade from OpenOffice 2.0 to OpenOffice 2.2 but when the dependencies are being solved, it says that plenty of programs must be removed, between them, some kde games and many other that appereantly have no relation with the OpenOffice suite.... If you have installed the GUI interface of clamAV == KlamAV it is still beta however it will inhibit s2disk and suspend2ram. It seems the real-time agent cannot be halted. Hi, so by default, the yast control panel apparmoar/"Profile Mode Configuration" shows: bin.ping enforce sbin.klogd enforce etc. With bin.ping being enabled, one cannot use the ping utility anymore, neither as normal user nor as root. According to strace, socket(PF_INET, SOCK_DGRAM, IPPROTO_IP) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) already fails. Is this really intended? The motherboard is a "ASUS A8N-VM CSM" with everything integrated, disk controller included, and it has been running a sata hard disk and this ata DVD drive (nec nd 4550) for months before having problems). Hi, I'm installing courier-imap on my opensuse 10.2 server. I can't get it to work. It said authentication error when I connect to the pop3 and send the username and password. I guess the problem is in the courier-authlib. I've looked into the log files and could not find any clue. I have set the DEBUG_LOGIN=2 in the authlib config file, there still no extra info in the log files. I then found a Courier-imap-debeuginfo package in the opensuse build server. I installed the package. Now, the question is how do I use it to get debug info for imap? Can any one help me please? I trashed my kernel. I have been thinking of replacing the HD anyways so I will probably just reinstall the OS from scratch. My question is where does yast keep the the config info like the update servers? I am hoping to just copy it from the old HD onto the new one after I get the initial install done. Hello, I have just been put in front of a computer with Suse 10.1 x86_64, a NEC ND-4550 DVD burner on /dev/hdc and a few DVD-R disks. I need to copy some critical files to those dvds as soon as possible, as I have the feeling the drive is failing and, for some reasons I haven't investigated yet, X won't start. Nice, uh? :-( I have tried: growisofs -Z /dev/hdc=/dev/zero to blank it and then the command at the end of this mail, pasted with its whole output. What am I doing wrong, or missing? SI have checked, and that burner does support dvd-r. Surely something very stupid, being tired as I am these days, but I really need to backup those files out of that hard drive as soon as possible before the computer dies on me or I can investigate if its problems can be fixed. Normally I still use CDs, that's why I am unfamiliar with DVD quirks, but the files this time are too many and too big to go with CDs. And no, unfortunately there is no other way to backup those files (no other computer to which I could connect it, no broadband or enough online space to upload the files somewhere...) I have already tried to look up those error messages via google, but frankly haven't recognized anything useful. So please help me to walk through this: what is the exact, foolproof way to burn the whole content of a directory from the command line, from unwrapping the dvd from the case to removing it from the burner? what are the exact command to type, and in which sequence? When I try to conenct to my SLES9 boxes with the latest TightVNC program, all I I get is a "Status: Protocol version negotiated" message. Googling it appears the VNC server in SLES9 does not support the new protocol used in TightVNC 1.3.9, and the solution is to either upgrade the VNC Server on SLES9, or downgrade the client's TightVNC to 1.2.9. I'd like to use 1.3.9 on the client because it apparently properly traps Alt-Tab window cycling and sends it to the SLES9 box. How to I upgrade the VNC Server on my SLES9 box? I'm using SLES9 SP3. [opensuse] Adjusting volume on a USB headset?

I have a new sound problem... I have a Logitech USB 250 Headset that has been working perfectly up until today. I have been able to adjust the volume using KMix... Today the volume dropped to about 20% and stayed there. If I turn on absolute values in KMix (shows value between 0 and 100) and move the slider, the highest it goes is 44% which is not high enough to hear anything. Is there any way to reconfigure this audio device? It is not present in YAST - never has been... I assume that is because of the fact it is a USB audio device. Is there another way - command line? - that I can reset teh volume to this audio device so I can hear things with it again? Oh, I have tried log out and back in.. and also a full reboot.. no change.. max is still 44% ad not loud enough to hear... Hello. I have some problems with suspend2disk and 'nvidia' driver. System hangs after resume. (For a long time I've used 'nv' driver and hibernate worked fine.) I tried to use System : OpenSuse 10.2 (x86) Kernel : 2.6.18.2-34-default NVidia driver : 1.0-9755 video : GeForce 6800 (PCI-E) I've set NvAGP option to 1 in xorg.conf. 'lsmod | grep agp' shows only 'agpgart' module. For suspend2 disk I use command 'powersave -U'. [opensuse] Printing Problems through D-Link Router

Hi all, I recently got a new computer (openSUSE 10.2, x86_64, fully patched) which does not have a parallel port. However I have an old HP Laserjet 4M (old, but works well) which only has a parallel port connection. This is at home, and I have a small D-Link DI-704P router which has a built in parallel port for sharing a printer - exactly what I would like to do here. After a rather frustrating bit of time I sort of have the printer working. I set it up as a remote LPD server (router address 192.168.0.1) with queue "lp". This "sort of" works in that the test pages (from CUPS and YaST) print just fine, but the document I wanted to print wouldn't. By trial and error I discovered that some documents will print, however some won't. For example, kwrite will print a text file (/etc/fstab for example) just fine, and postscript and pdf files generated (through CUPS) from this file using kwrite also print fine (from acrobat for example). However, openoffice writer with a simple text file will not print (the lights on the printer blink for a few seconds but then stop and no paper comes out). Similarly a pdf generated in openoffice writer from a simple text file does not print. Other pdf files (generated in Kile for example) seem to print OK. So, not all postscript of pdf files are created equally. However, I know very little about the format of postscript and pdf files and how these differences could affect essentially just the data passing through the router. (These files print just fine with this printer on another machine with a parallel port so I know the printer works.) I've looked at the logs in the router and the only messages related to printing are pairs of messages like Printing jobs started from <name of machine> Printing job finished with no indications of any errors. I checked the D-Link web site and there are no firmware upgrade for this router, and all of the support seems to be windows based. I've tried several different ppd files for this printer (though not all) and they each show the same behavior. I'm not sure what else to try and am looking for some suggestions (wild guesses also accepted). I hope someone here can shed some light on this for me. Hi, I have just assembled new PC with Intel Core2 Duo, Gigabyte m/b, Intel P35 Chipset, and Asus 8600GT/512MB PCIe video card. Software: SuSE 10.2 with latest kernel update, latest nvidia driver from its web site installed manually ("modprobe nvidia" works) However, neither "sax2" neither "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia" do not work as expected - sax2 ALWAYS switch to framebuffer mode. I have replaced video card with MSI 8600GT, installed it into another PCIe slot, problem still exists. Strange enogh, since lspci DOES lists this video card. Additionally, Windoze works on this PC. Anyone can explain me what went wrong? I have a domain that I use to forward email. So I'm subscribed to this list as dave(a)howorth.org.uk and it is forwarded to my real ISP. The company that provides this service has decided to try to get extra money for the same service so I'm looking for somewhere else. They also host the DNS for that domain and a few others and provide web forwarding as well, though I don't use that in earnest. Can anybody recommend any company in the UK or Europe that provides these services, speak English and are trustworthy? Or how much of this could I do for myself? Are there any good howtos? Hello, I'm running 10.2 on a Thinkpad X60. I've setup the network to *not* use networkmanager. I've setup the wired network and the wifi card to use fixed IPs because that's what I am using on my network. As obviously I could not get both cards to run at the same time (it seems this should be feasible if I understand right but it did not work), so I've created two scripts than either turn the wired eth0 card off and the wifi card eth1 on, or the other way round, then two icons in kicker, all that remains is to enter the root password to let them run. This setup works fine for me (provided I remember to use the slider that locks the wifi off of course, I always forget that one). Now, my problem is this: I will soon be back at work, where I can hook myself on a wireless network that uses DHCP *and* requires me to use the right DNS values. Now: - is it possible to easily specify several wifi configurations, if possible including DNS values? Mac OS X does do that, you can save several configs and load the one you need here or there. Do we have anything approaching? - should I go for a bunch of scripts that would ifconfig everything each time I turn a network device on (if I remember correctly I should be able to use ifconfig to setup IP or DHCP, and route to add the gateway. I don't know if I can change the gateway "on the fly" however). Anyone has experience with such stuff? If I use it on MS Vista, both will switch on together without problem, but with opensuse, wifi is on meanwhile the bluetooth will report : BlueZ switch device into off mode How do I switch it on? There are several RPM files that get installed with YAST as part of the OpenOffice.org "package"... are you sure that this is multiple versions of the same file, or could it be simply the various RPMs for a single install? Not sure why it would be greyed out though.... To clean this up, you could try removing all of OpenOffice (using YAST), and then installing the latest version - that way you can hopefully end with a single version. Your config etc will remain in your /home so you should not loose anything. [opensuse] Sound Configuration Voodoo

I've been trying to use Skype on ICH5 AC'97 with normal speakers and boom mike. The latest is a "SUSE 10.x" RPM a week old. Previously there was only available a tar.gz for SUSE. The Skype RPM works, but only when my 10.2 sound configuration is correct. Making it correct is vexing. Even more vexing is it won't stay properly configured, as if some daemon at least once a day was deleting or substituting its own idea of how sound should be configured. I looked in /etc for something that represents sound configuration, but /etc/sound does not exist, and /etc/alsa.d only contains *font files. Anyone know why, when I open KMix and set various components according to Skype instructions, that I can open KMix again 24 hours later and the settings won't be the same as I left them? Anyone know how to configure SUSE sound via config files, at least, where they are, or some HOWTO for configuring sound without GUI tools, or with something other than KMix? [opensuse] Can I use y2pmbuild on SuSE 10.2?

Hi, I checked SuSE 10.2's repository and there's no y2pmsh rpm. There's y2pmsh-2.13.3-6.i586.rpm in SuSE 10.1's repository. I tried to install y2pmsh-2.13.3-6.i586.rpm on SuSE 10.2 and it doesn't work. Is there any particular reason SuSE remove y2pmsh from 10.2? I tried the "build" tool of SuSE 10.2 but it gave me error messages when I tried to build a SuSE 9.3 rpms. When I use SuSE 10.0 and y2pmbuild to build that rpm it was all ok. [opensuse] Linksys WUSB54G usb wireless network

Has anyone gotten the Linksys WUSB54G usb wireless network adapter to work with openSUSE 10.2? The openSUSE HCL claims this should work on 10.2. I wonder if this is correct as I know it did not work work with 10.0, and the HCL claims i works there as well. I do not get it to work. [opensuse] Toshiba P35 10.2 install *Overheating*

Listmates, I finally decided to take the plunge and eliminate the last bastion of MS from my life -- that means the laptop. I installed a new hard-drive loaded XP (well I still need QuickBooks) and then went to load 10.2 for my regular OS on my laptop. The install was *hellish* and required rescue and manual creation of swap, but that is another story. The system is now fully installed with everything working, wireless, etc... During install and after I finally succeeded in getting everything installed, my laptop overheats, freezes and dies. I have powersaved set on "acoustic" with active cooling, but the system still overheats. This box runs warm under windows, but never dies. One confusing "clue" is that under the suse install, the fans seem to run *more* than they do under windows, but the system still overheats? When you look at kpowersave, it shows *two* CPU's (there is only 1) and the first CPU is pegged at 3300 and the second at 1200-1600. I don't have a clue what this means other than it looks like my CPU is working overly hard on something. I have googled and found information suggesting uninstalling zend/zmd (which was nothing but trouble during install) and also setting hard values for /proc/acpi/fan/FAN1, etc, but nothing seems like more than a shot in the dark. Does anyone have any suggestions, links or advise for addressing this issue. I would really like to make the jump to 10.2 for primary use of my laptop, but with the heating/shutdown issue, that is obviously impossible. David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
