Cable internet, router and SuSEfirewall2(oh my)

I've been testing my cable setup, and have run into a few problems that i think are firewall related. I can't ping the router or my other linux bozes from any linux box. On one box, I received a firewall message about anti-spoofing, while pinging. I can't even connect to 192.168.1.1 (routers internal ip) from a linux box, but i can from windows. Should I set the internal and external interface to eth0? or Just external? I'm using a linksys router so I believe my network is hidden from the outside world, so is the firewall necessary? Printing in SuSe 8.2 Openoffice w/Canon BJC-2100

I am in need of first finding a driver for that printer that will work in SuSe 8,2, and secondly, a fool proof installation procedure of said driver. I have downloaded drivers from a couple of different sites, but there is no way I can install them. There is no installation instructions or if there is, you have to be a programmer to understand them. I am trying to switch from Windows to Linux in every way I can, but word-processing so far, has proven illusive.

Remote Desktop

Is there a way to remove the confirmation when someone connects via remote desktop? If I connect from work I have to have someone at home click on "control mouse & keyboard" and accept connection. Is there a way to make it automatically connect. Sorry for all the questions :) Thanks... -Jason

SuSE-8.2 - Corel-OpenOffice2000 installation failed

SuSE-8.2 - WPOffice error - message in german I can not translate

I have problem to install WordPerfect2000 with SuSE-8.2. I saw a Web-page that talks apparently of an equivalent problem but it is in german and I can not translate. Somebody od SuSE can maybe tell me if there is a way to have WordPerfect work with SuSE-8.2. Andernfalls mußt du in diesem Script in allen Zeilen, die tcp/$host:7102/all enthalten das 'all' löschen. Die meisten Frage zu WPO2000 findest du in den Archiven der Newsgroup 'corel.wpoffice.office2000-linux' beantwortet. Noch eine Warnung, WPO2000 ist unter SuSE-8.2 nur mit Tricks (LD_LIBRARY_PATH usw.) zu laufen zu bringen. SuSe 9.0 and Nvidia FX 5600 -> strange problem

Hello, I have the excellent Version 9 of our favourite Linux flavour and found it really great. I installed it with no problems, and logged into KDE for the first time, and it works perfectly. My problem is: althought I configured my Nvidia FX5600 and my monitor, as soon as I reboot, the configuration seems to be broken, as KDE shows a weird refresh rate, so I can't see anything clearly. When I log into KDE after install I check all settings with sax and Yast and everything seems to be right, but as soon as I reboot my settings are gone and I can't log on KDE anymore. Please note that I'm newbie with low console-level, but I would try to fix it logging as root in text-mode with not many problems (I hope ;-) ) My specs are nVidia FX5600 from MSI VTDR128 Hyundai ImageQuest Q17 LCD monitor MSI Delta K7N2 Nforce2-based mobo AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 1Gb DDR RAM 160Gb Maxtor Thanks a lot for your time Greetings from Spain --------------------------------- Yahoo! Weird Susefirewall2 problem, some http hosts don't work - timeout on server, without firewall everything OK???

Hello, This is my first message here, so excuse my bad English. First of all, we have little network here, 192.168.x.x static IP addresses. That's not problem, I configured Susefirewall2 to work with masquerading, and everything works fine except one thing. Some hosts doesn't answer to http requests. When I shut down firewall, those hosts work. It's hosts on one provider, on IP addresses 217.26.64.x and 62.108.96.x. I get only (in Konqueror): An error occured while loading http://xxx.xxx.net Timeout on server Timed out while waiting to connect to xxx.xxx.net I suppose those servers send some ping or some other requests, and don't answer because of that. All other http requests go fine (for example google etc). I'll try to explain our network - it's on cable connection, we have real IP (seen in headers of this e-mail), in computer with firewall are 2 network cards, one with real IP and other with IP of local network. Gnome File Types editor not working anymore

Hi, It seems that my GNOME file associations has all gone haywire. I try to assign OpenOffice documents to open with OpenOffice, but it seems that the changes are not saved. It is stuck on StarOffice, which is not installed anymore. If I change the setting, it seems to accept it, but if I open the file type editor for the type again, it has reverted back to StarOffice.. Can anybody tell me where this information is stored? Looks like the only option is to hack the files where the settings are stored. Any other solutions? SOUND RECORDING --Problems

Please can you guys help? I've been trying to use 'krecord' to transfer info from sound cards into .wav files. The story so far: 1. I've got an Athlon XP 1600+ on a Gigabyte GA-7DXR mobo (with on board 'Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI128') running SuSE v8.0 which allows me to record sound via the on board sound card without any problems whatsoever. This leads me to believe that I understand how to use 'krecord', 'kmix', etc. This PC is well used and rock solid for internet, office, prog dev, TV/Radio and CD burning. No problems! 2. I've recently set up an Athlon XP 2200+ on a Gigabyte 7-VA mobo with Realtek ALC650 on board sound. Despite having tried various (repeated) installations (SuSE v8.0, v8.1 and v8.2), I cannot get 'krecord' to connect with 'kmix'. 'krecord' will run and will go through the motions of recording, but doesn't record anything (the signal level meter doesn't show anything at all). I can play CDs (via 'kscd') and 'kmix' seems to work OK, as does everything else that I've tried. I've tried removing the sound card setup via YAST and then using 'alsaconf' which recognises and sets up the sound which then works as per the above description. I hesitate to say this, but I can record sound under MS Windows 98, so hardware seems to be OK. I've set permissions on /dev/dsp0 and /dev/audio to ensure that the user has access, but the problem is the same even if I run as 'root'. My knowledge/understanding this topic is pretty basic. Can someone point me in the right direction? How should I attempt to diagnose the problem? A few helpful words or some references, particularly wrt recording would be much appreciated? Adding CD-RW Drive

Hi. I added an AIC7xxx card and a SCSI CD-RW driver to my system. I have used it successfully to burn an iso image using cdrecord. Now, I'd like regular users to be able to make it to work with K3B. Unfortunately, when I use Yast's cd drive tool to configure the drive, it adds it as a regular CD-ROM drive. It doesn't show up for users at all. What is the proper way to get SuSE to recognize the drive and grant users access to it? Thanks, mike.

threading / colours in kmail

I mostly just lurk on this list (being newish) - it's good for me to read the mail and learn. It's a heck of a lot of mail though, you all know this. To help me manage I'm using the threading feature in kmail, which is useful. OK my question is to do with the colours that kmail makes the messages. Obviously the red colour indicates a new mail. And blue means a message which is not new but which I still haven't read. Is it possible to further customise kmail regarding these colours? For instance, I would like to able to quickly and easily "flag" messages / threads that I'm interested in, and thus be able to easily identify them later by colour. Could I bind a key perhaps, to (for example) colour a message that I am interested in yellow? That way when I look at the list of messages I can identify the ones of particular interest without having to do any *hard* work. Also I could have a colour to indicate "too technical for me" and "this is a silly message"... etc. I know I can flag messages as "important" via Message / Mark_Message / Mark_Message_as_Important ... but I was hoping for something with more colour. I have tried installing the flash drive as /dev/hda and /dev/hdc. without any luck. Here is some more interesting info. SuSE 7.3 installs on the drive just fine when it is installed as /dev/hda. SuSE 8.0 and 8.1 Professional both hang with the same error before I can even get to the install. It fails with the error: Partition check: hda:<2>Serverworks OSB4 in impossible state. Disable UDMA or if you are using Seagate then try switching disk types on this controller. Please report this event to osb4-bug(a)ide.cabal.tm OSB4: continuing might cause disk corruption. SuSE 8.2 can get to the configuration for the install, but as soon as it tries to partition the disk, it fails and says that it is unable to create the partition. I have tried disabling DMA, it doesn't help. I have also tried passing kernel parameters to tell the kernel it is a flash drive. In addition, I have tried forcing the drive geometry at boot time. I tried partitioning with 7.3 and installing with 8.2, but 8.2 won't recognize the 7.3 partitions. I even tried coping fdisk and parted from 7.3 to a floppy and using them with 8.2. But when the server is booted off of the 8.2 kernel, even the older versions of these programs can't partition the drive. Are there major changes to how 7.3 and 8.0 handle IDE drives? Anyone have any clues? Are there any wireless gurus on this list?

Hi All, Sorry to repost this, but this problem (although minor) is really bugging me. I've successfully got SuSE 9.0 installed on my laptop with a Netgear MA401 wireless card running 104 bit wep just fine...the problem is: every time I reboot the laptop the card starts up in open mode and not restricted, so I have to su into root and type "iwconfig wlan0 key xxxxxxxx restricted" to make it associate with the access point. I've configured the card through yast, including the encryption key, but it still fails on bootup. I know I could script this into the runlevel, but the point is I shouldn't have to. How can I force this card into restricted mode? Is this a possible bug in the YAST configuration? I opened a support ticket with SuSE, but this isn't covered under free support :( Thanks! Mozilla problem

Hello I have intalled SuSE 9.0 at home, and I have also intalled mozilla. Downloaded the new X patches with YOU and now mozilla does not work. It starts, but when I want to enter some text it freezes. OK, I have downloaded the new mozilla 1.5 (gtk2) form the SuSE ftp site installed it and the same behaviour occures. Problems installing suse linux - no boot floppy

Hi, I have a server running redhat 6.2 which uses a scsi host adapter for the CDROM. I don't have a CD for the suse linux 8 install only cd's. I have tried creating a boot floppy via rawwritewin.exe on the suse CD #1 via windows XP, i put the floppy in the redhat machine along with suse cd #1 and boot, click manual install (none work) it gives me an error saying it can't read disk.... I have tried writing the i386 image file and creating the two modules floppy's, both of which just come back and say module disk #1 - unable to load, or module disk #2 - unable to load! Can somebody help me get suse on this server please. thankyou Damian Buckley

SuSE 9.0 - Please make note of a serious issue regarding NTFS partitions

Managed to get a boxed set of SuSE 9.0 off the shelf on Saturaday. After backing up data files, a fresh install of SuSE 9.0 was carried out. The install program wiped 8.2 and installed 9.0. The process went very smoothly with all the hardware being detected correctly, with the exceptions below. The specification of the PC is : Make : Medion with AMD 2600+ Graphics : Nvidia G4 440SE Memory : 512 MB HD : Dual boot Windows and Linux (Windows rarely used!!) Additional external drives : 60GB USB2 and 20GB firewire Network : Built in Realtek 100MB and USB Netgear Wireless adapter MA101 SERIOUS ISSUE This afternoon SuSE 9.0 was installed on my son's Compaq which has Windows XP Home Edition. The install program partitioned the drive and installed SuSE. However, the windows NTFS partition was corrupted rendering Windows unusable. The recovery files are on a separate partition which can also not be booted. No backup of data was made, so my son's course work has been lost. DO BE CAREFUL and backup data. I am sending this mail immediately this happened to warn other users of this problem. At the moment, I don't not even know how restore Windows at all. Resolved Issues: Wireless USB : The adapter was detected correctly and the correct modules loaded. However, a connection with the wireless access point was not possible. The USB_HOST_CONTROLLER variable in sysconfig had to be changed to stop one usb module being loaded at boot. After rebooting, the adapter worked fine. The card was setup in YaST2 so that after booting the correct parameters are passed to the wireless adapter. The firewall has to be restarted to access the internet. If anyone else this problem, I will be glad to post my solution. CUPS : After installing CUPS, the printer attached to the Linux box was visible to other Windows pc's. In control panel, the printer is listed as being recognised but not accessible. Right clicking the icon and selecting a test print, the printing is fine. Testing the printing on other applications was also ok. This has arisen as CUPS runs as user "lp" rather than root for security reasons. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable on CUPS could shed more light on this issue. One unresolved problem is that CUPS cannot be configured using a browser. Anyone with a solution. ACPI : The install was carried out with ACPI options left on and gave rise to no problems. In fact, the PC switches off and reboots with no problems. Previously, on reboot the external F/Wire drive was not recognised and the PC had to be manually switched off. All in all, the upgrade to 9.0 has been worth the effort and is recomennded to anyone. Problem with Timeserver

Dear All, I have Samba running on my 8.2 SuSE Linux Server. Shares and all other are working just great! The problem is with time. Although I have specified that the linux box is a timeserver in the smb.conf file, the Win2000 boxes will not set their time accordingly. The Win9X machines on the other hand, work just fine and their time is set ! Any good ideas? Thanx! Chris

boot process hangs at maestro3

Inspiron 8100, SuSE 8.2 recently installed. (installed over 8.1) Sometimes when I boot the process hangs. The last printed message is something like this: "Loading sound module maestro3" I have to hard restart with the power button. If I then try to boot into SuSE again it hangs again at the same spot. The only way to get around the problem is to boot into Win2K then out of Win2K then back into SuSE and I am good for awhile. Wierd?? Any ideas? Duane Wilson

DMA Set problem

Hello, I don't know if the question have been already posted. I've SuSE 8.2 prof. installed in a PIV (Dell inspiron 5150) with a TOSHIBA MK4019GAX and when trying to set the DMA access I get: HDIO_SET_DMA failed: operation not permited. Which makes the system stop when accessing the HD. With the 'old' 8.1 version I do not have this problem. Can anybody help ? Thanks very much in advance. Celestino.

Not mounting a drive on system boot

Hello all. I have a drive that is dedicated as a backup device. I have a script that runs every night and backs up certain parts of the system to this drive. Now, the script mounts the drive and when the backup process is done, the drive is unmounted. I figure that my backed up data is more secure if I don't leave the drive mounted when its not in use. Also, I am going to be adding an hdparm command to power the drive down when the backup is completed also. Now, the question is since the drive and partition information is in both /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab, how do I go about stopping the boot process from mounting this drive automaically at boot but still give me the ability to do a "mount /backup" command from the script? thanks, Jim

[WARNING - Suse newbie] Hi, all, After years of Mandrake, and with a disappointing MDK 9.2 attempt to install, I have decided to take another look at Suse (have not seen it since 6.4 ... I think ...). I was able to install it(Suse 9.0) just fine, but I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction for the followings (I apologize if this has been answered before, but Suse's site does not seem to have a search engine for this mailing list archive, while netsys.com - the other place I found this to be archived - is in the process of updating their search engine ;( ) : - is there an equivalent of the MDK database of updates, that would allow one to build a list of sites (after having installed from CDs), and use those for any future software installs (vs. having to use the CDs all the time)? I hate to think of needing something on my Suse machine at work, and - while ssh-ed into it - to find out that yast asks me for CD number <x>, when trying to install remotely software I did not put on in the beginning. - can I point - somehow - to the updates site(s) of Suse, and do manual/CLI update, without having to use Yast, but with capability of identifying dependencies! (ala MDK: # urpmi.update -a then # urpmi --update --auto-select) ? - is there an equivalent of the PLF site(s) for Suse (thinking DVD stuff, and the likes ;))? postfix running, is it needed really?

I noticed that my laptop automatically starts postfix after boot? I wonder why is that started, since I only use Mozilla (thunderbird) for my email, whichI assume can handle sending the actual email with out postfix. Or am I wrong. Can this be turned of, since a) I feel that it's uneccessary b) it eats some resources c) one more runnign service == additional possibility to have vulnerabilities Can I actually unistall it totally, or does that provide lot of libs etc. to other apps. You can feedback them about this problem. The true is: they are returning the email(s) in days or even months. If you lets say buy the PRO kit and you get some days installation support then they might not answer you about different questions than installation support. So you need to buy a different support option- The feedback email address turned into WEB feedback form. This is fine but again their answer back is *very* slow. kernel-modules-hardware problems

I didn't get the info from Jan re: NVIDIA 4496 soon enough to keep me from heading into a horrible spiral. I wound up dumping the whole machine and reinstalling, again! I then restored the home directories, updating KDE to 3.1.4, updating via YOU - except kernel patch and NVIDIA. (*I have never messed with the kernel or modules before. I'm running 8.1 personal and don't have the kernel source installed. - Feeling like a real newbie here!*) All seemed to be working fine until I tried to use my scanner and found it wasn't detected and that the module wasn't loaded. I loaded the module via Yast>hardware>scanner, then installed my scanner. Works fine until I reboot, then it's gone again. Did the same with insmod, and as soon as I reboot the module disappears. First - What do I do to load the scanner module and have it load automatically every time I boot (insmod, modprobe...)? Second - Should I just install the new kernel-source and compile it, which would install the necessary modules (This scares me a bit. I really want to make sure I can recover without a hitch.)? VMware freezes in SuSE 9.0

Hi! I installed VMware and tried to run it... it freezes immediatly after I am trying to start the installation of the guest OS... I also have acpi loaded in Grub... everything seems to be running fine... but it still freezes and I am not able to reboot the virtual machine, to close VMware... ANY HINTS on how to get VMwareWorkstation-4.0.5-6030 up and running??? Regards, Radu

Java problem

problems accessing network through Local Network icon

Hi I just installed suse 9.0 but i'm having problems accessing the smb shares through konqueror. When clicking on the Local Network icon on the desktop I get the following error: "Internal Error Please send a full bug report at http://bugs.kde.org libsmbclient reported an error, but didn't specify what the problem is. This might indicate a severe problem with your network - but also might indicate a problem with libsmbclient. If you want to help us, please provide a tcpdump of the network interface while you try to browse (be aware that it might contain private data, so don't post it if you're unsure about that - you can send it privately to the developers if they ask for it)" I had a look at the tcpdump data but I didn't understand much... Any idea on how to solve this? Does anyone know another smb file browser? I used komba before but it seems that it discontinued.... Thanks Gustavo

SuSEfirewall2 slows KHelpcenter on 9.0 Pro...

Good day, on 9.0 Pro, when SuSEfirewall2 is enabled KHelpcenter takes 3 minutes and 12 seconds to start. When SuSEfirewall2 is disabled it takes only 3 seconds to start. Could this be caused by the same bug that freezes mozilla when SuSEfirewall2 is enabled? Best regards :o) Johnny :o)

using easytag in SUSE 9.0

Can anyone explain why when I attempt to use easytag as an ordinary user it hangs, at startup with no error messages, however, if I "sux -" into root mode and then "sux -" back to myself it works fine? I guess it has something to do with permissions but how do I find out what it is and how do I correct it? As normal user all I get is: Starting EasyTAG 0.28 ... Currently using id3lib version 3.8.2 ... Thanks. Eddie

Well, I got it running last night using the text install method. I still can't get anything above 640 x 480 resolution though, as no matter what card I try. Sax2 always tell me it was unable to set the card. I'll have to have a look around for some help on the Readon 9200 from somewhere. Problems with localhost

After installing SuSE 9, the network has been setup as before. On a command prompt, pinging localhost responds correctly showing an IP address of 127.0.0.1. However, in Konqueror or Firebird browser, typing in an address of "localhost" results in no response from the browser. In fact, trying to start apache also results in a failed message. If after the failed message on starting apache, the firewall is restarted apache will run normally. If the firewall is stopped, the localhost address works in either browser. For example "localhost:901" starts swat. With the firewall running the address "127.0.0.1:901" will correctly start swat but "localhost:901" leads nowhere. Can anyone shed any light on how to correct this problem? Thanks. LW999

SuSE and apt

Hello, I'm new to SuSE and was wondering, I'm trying to get apt running on this box and it doesn't appear to want to run. i've installed the rpms from apt4rpm but when i run rpm -qa | grep -E "^apt-0" I get no confirmation of it's installation and if I try apt-get I get unrecognizable command. This time round the new Australian distributor is right up to speed. EverythingLinux has had all versions shipping (going fast, they say) since the release day. Ordered my copy Friday, got it by midday Monday. Suse deserve congratulations on their handling of this release, michaelj PS: I've spun it up at home, seems smooth. Had to take the CD out to get the initial reboot to work, as I have an SMP system and the CD kernel is "deflt". Simply pressed "eject" and reset, then waited till it had picked up the HD kernel. When I login I get a window up stating "Could not start kdeinit, check your installation" ... with an okay button to clear it off the screen, which I select. In the meantime I have the KDE window start and load everything as per normal. The system is up and running OK. I am using kde 3.1.4 and SuSE 8.0. This same problem had occurred a little while ago when I was running SuSE V8.0 and had upgraded to kde 3.1.4. My current installation was a clean install of SuSE V8.2 and updated using apt-get, to which I had moved all my data files from the old home directory on the former drive. It seems to me that somewhere in the configuration I have a small problem that causes the above message. Can anyone suggest how best to resolve this. KDE menu question

This is something I've noticed for a while (over several versions of KDE)... and it's finally bugging me enough to ask about it. When I add an application that adds things to the KMenu, sometimes they don't show up until after a restart of KDE. Case in point. I've installed CrossOver Office (in SuSE9.0), and Office2000... and the Windows Applications menu item doesn't show up. If I open the menu editor, it's there in the editor, and if I restart KDE it will probably show up... maybe. What gives? Why do some things show up immediately in the KMenu, and others never do? Is there soem way I've missed to force a reload of the KMenu without a restart of KDE (logout/login.. whatever)? C.

PCMCIA card not accessible

Hello, This is a request for help with a PCMCIA card concerning the following problem : I have a 'Smart Media Adapter' PCMCIA card (brand 'DigiCard') in which I can insert a SmartMedia memory card from my digital camera. When inserting the 'Smart Media Adapter' in the PCMCIA slot, I should be able to read the memory card as a hard-disk. But, ........................ I can't get access to it ! Group; Has anyone among this group gotten a DVD and xine to work? I have SuSE 8.2 soon to be 9.0 I am trying to get it to work and I am drawing a blank (due to this so called great economy in USA). I have down loaded and compiled xine, xine-libs and gxine. I have also grabbed all of the dependencies - even em3800 and DVB. What am I missing? I have mount the filesystem and just get a flash of one image.vob. It may even be due to a old DVD format (Taffin DVD). Hi, I have recently bought a new Time Computers 2.6Ghz AMD PC with a 256Mb ATi Radeon 9200SE graphics card in it. When I try to install my SuSE 8.2 Personal edition, it boots from the CD, but no matter what option I choose, the PC locks, and never brings up any image on the monitor, after Choose the Installation Type' screen. I can get it to work partially, but I do not understand why one works and the other does not. sieveshell documentation seems a little thin, but this is probably because it's one of those things that pretty simple to get working. I have tried using xtrace that comes with suse 8.2 pro and have also tried the 0.9.1 version and have not had any luck using them. I have also tried running visualroute and for some reason it does not work right. Does anyone know of or have a good trace/whois for suse linux. I would like to find one that also has a world map that it uses. Any help will be greatly accepted. Thanks for a great list.

Envelopes in OpenOffice

How does one print envelopes in OpenOffice1.1, using "Insert -> Envelopes" please? I use DL size envelopes and have set OpenOffice -> Insert -> Envelopes -> Format to DL. Using "Generic Printer". It always starts with A4, so I change this to DL. Then I insert it into the document as page1. When I try to print it, the Generic Printer Settings Properties come up as A4, so I change these also to DL. Then I try to print on to the envelope, but it just winds through the printer without printing anything. Testing with an A4 size paper, rather than the envelope, the address is printed right at the bottom of it. My DL margins are set correctly. Using KPrinter instead of Generic, I find that the only way to print an envelope is to change the OpenOffice -> Insert -> Envelope -> Format -> Printer Properties to DL, and then the Printer Properties in the KPrinter settings box to DL, each time I want to print an envelope. Next time I run OpenOffice, everything is back to A4 - which is my basic paper size -and I have to go through the whole setting up of KPrinter again. What a long winded way of printing an envelope each time! Is there an easier way, and one which saves all my envelope properties? Surely, I must be able to just insert an envelope into the document as page1 and it will print correctly as the DL size and then the rest of the document as A4. To sum up, how do you print envelopes in OpenOffice? I hope that this explanation of what happens is clear. Many thanks for any advice. Keith

Hi, I tried out to install a Ethernet/USB ADSL modem on a SuSE 8.1 box last WE. I never installed such ADSL modem before (always use Ethernet connection at work). Is someone have already install this particular ADSL modem, which is recognized by YAST2 BTW ? I do not know if it is better to plug it through the USB port or through the Ethernet card ? I guess this mean use PPPoA in the first case and PPPoE in the second. My brother in law would prefer keep using the USB port (the modem works great under windows at this time) so if tehre is a procedure to use it with PPPoA we will try out. Of course, if only the second possibility is availble we will plug the ethernet card and use PPPoE (a procedure will be greatly appreciated as well). Thanks a lot. iwconfig for restricted mode

Hi all, I've got SuSE 9.0 installed and running great on my Thinkpad 600E laptop. I'm using a Netgear MA401 wireless card with encryption running just fine. The problem is that when I boot the machine, the card boots up in open mode and not restricted. I have to su into root and run "iwconfig wlan0 key xxxxxxxxx restricted" to get the card communicating with the access point. Why is that, and how can I force the card to start up in restricted mode? Upgrade question.

I currently have 8.2 pro and I'm supposed to get 9.0 pro sometime this week. In the past, I've used the upgrade option, but this time I'm thinking of doing a new install. My question is if I do a new install, I'm I going to lose all my information in my /home directory? What's the benefit of a fresh install vs upgrade? Basically, I have everything working how I want it, so I don't want to screw anything up with a fresh install. I'm talking about firewall, ssh info, web stuff, cups, samba, etc... MTAB problem: file exists but is not found

Hello, My laptop was not correctly shut down. Ext2, the file system is now corrupted (don't tell me to change to Ext3, it is SuSE-7.3). During boot the partitions are not mounted because /etc/mtab is not created. As the / and /usr partitions are not mounted, a lot of applications are not installed (PCMCIA, etc). I can mount the partition manually after boot (with mount -n /dir_to_mount). /etc/mtab does not show but I always have error message "mtab file exists - Error input/output". It is apparently a problem of inode that was not suppressed. Hi Folks, Just some education if I may please? I was wondering if anyone can put into layman's terms for me the essential difference between using kdesu + password OR using sudo + password to run certain programs as the super user (root)? When I want to do backups of the system essentials to cd I run the burn program (usually cdbakeoven as k3b is flaky here for some reason) with kdesu but with file permissions retained. As I understand it, if I just use my user name things like files in /etc or /var or /root et al that I don't normally have access to get skipped? Is that right? Anyway, I was looking at sudo and what it does and I am now unsure which method of converting to superuser is appropriate in different circumstances. I would appreciate experienced user guidance - it's just I like to do things the 'right' way, not just some way that maybe works! Cheers, Paul.

Need read-only NFS with local disk based caching, CODA?

On a cluster of 66 nodes, running a mixture of Suse 8.1 and 8.2 our bioinformatic database files are outgrowing the nodes capacity to store them, (~24Gig). Note, we call them databases, but to an operating system they are just a bunch of big (~2Gig) files that need to be read at the beginning of each job. Jobs only last minutes, so they are being read a lot. Plenty of space on the fileserver but we find that cluster throughput levels off at about 10 nodes when the databases are provided through NFS as the single NFS server becomes a bottleneck. We need something that provides a network file system but with local caching. 24 Gig will be heaps of space to keep a good selection of the popular databases locally. When someone asks for something esoteric or after an update we have a short pause while the information is re-distributed and we are humming again. I thought to use CODA but find a wheird mix of doco dating from 1900s and somone contributing modules for current kernels. Anyone got any experience with Coda as a cluster filesystem? Anyone got any experience with Coda on Suse at all? And if you don't like it, what are the alternatives? Problem with Authentification

Dear Madams and Sirs, we have here a small, trusted network (with trusted users) that consists of a heterogenous (i.e., Suse, Redhat, Solaris) set of machines and operates a common, unified file system (w/ autofs and nis). We also would like to provide a convenient mechanism to remotely login to the various machines. This is especially important for shell scripts which have to run various parts of our process on different machines which have different sets of softwa After an internal evaluation, we came to the conclusion that rsh/rlogin is a better solution than ssh. Ssh comes with an overhead about authentification that is not justified in our small, trusted network. Also its encryption limits its performance. e.g., when transferring large amounts of data through remote copy or pipes. We also don't like to switch off these mechanisms in ssh because we still would like to use a strongened ssh for connections outside our network. If we were selectively switching off ssh's security mechanisms, we would see a risk that we would introduce wholes in our security system (mainly because of human-cause configuration errors). We would like to keep rsh and ssh separated. My favorite solution would be to use /etc/hosts.equiv, e.g. > +@catnet in order to enable for the whole netgroup. hello, I have a DVD reader and an old ScSI Plextor writer on my PC. I installed the SuSE 8.2, which recognized my dvd (/dev/hdc) and my cdwriter (/dev/sr0) but only as a reader. K3B refuses to detect my writer...and suggests I put "hdc=ide-scsi" in the boot options. I tried, but it didn't worked. k3b/SuSE9.0 hiccup

I have recently completed a shift from 8.2 to 9.0 (clean install) and in the new setup k3b detects my cd/dvd player (Sony dvd rom - ide2, master) but not my cd writer (Benq 52x24x52 - ide2,slave). I was thinking scsi emulation issue, but I thought that was no longer required in 9.0? Strange thing is cdbakeoven detects both, so I am using that for backups and burning audio cds at present. However, I would still like to know why one program detects the drive and another doesn't? I thought they were all just front-ends for cdrecord etc.? Paul.

Hey all, Just thought I would pass along this bit of info to others before they spend hours, as I have, trying to figure out why Gnome programs suddenly quit compiling. Seems the latest files uploaded to the SuSE ftp KDE 8.2 respository are 9.0 files and not 8.2. It would appear that 9.0 has made some changes in the locations of the gnome files, thus using 9.0 stuff on an 8.2 setup will be somewhat bad. The affected files are: libgsf-1.8.2-18.i568.rpm libgsf-doc-1.8.2-18 libgsf-gnome-1.8.2-18 libgsf-devel-1.8.2-18 These are 9.0 files in the 8.2 KDE applications & development directories. No Video (blue screen) in xine, mplayer,kaffeine, Ogle for DVD's

I have a rather interesting problem. In xine, kaffeine, and mplayer, I can here the sound of the dvd, but just a blue screen. I don't get any video. From a previous post, I saw someone had to enable DMA on their dvd drive in YAST. I checked that and enabled DMA, but it still didn't help. Any idea's. Hi, Looks like all patches for SuSE 9.0 are available under ftp.suse.com but not yet the main distribution OS. As well supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0 is in there. Kind of strange because 9.0 ships with KDE 3.1.4 :)) So what is this ? Any idea when the 9.0 will be available under ftp.suse.com ? stefan
