I noticed that my laptop automatically starts postfix after boot? I wonder why is that started, since I only use Mozilla (thunderbird) for my email, whichI assume can handle sending the actual email with out postfix. Or am I wrong. Can this be turned of, since a) I feel that it's uneccessary b) it eats some resources c) one more runnign service == additional possibility to have vulnerabilities Can I actually unistall it totally, or does that provide lot of libs etc. to other apps. Mozilla is only the composer part of email. You also need a transport part which is what postfix or sendmail or qmail perform, also known as an MTA. Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998
By default, postfix only listens to localhost, so it is not a security risk unless your system is already compromised. Secondly, postfix can come in handy if you do not wish to rely on your ISP's SMTP server. Postfix can send out your mail for you. Sometimes ISP's SMTP servers can be a pain in the neck to use. If you want to uninstall postfix, I personally see no reason why you couldn't. -JM -----Original Message----- From: P_S [mailto:tuxnduke@welho.com] Sent: Monday, October 27, 2003 8:20 AM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] postfix running, is it needed really? Yes, there is a reason: local messags would not work. They are used for example, by cron to report errors, by yast when installing/modifying some packages, etc. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
