C-Media (sound card) configuration
Hello all, My system (Suse 8.1 Personal Edition)does not allow me to configure sound driver (C-Media 8738) that is embedded in ASUS A7V333 motherboard. Is there anybody who knows how to configure the sound? Any help is appreciated. Shinichi

According to the ALSA soundcard matrix, the driver to use is cmipci. Charles P.S.: For those who like to compile ALSA themselves, 0.9.8 was just released a few days ago. Grab the tarballs while they are hot :-). -- "All language designers are arrogant. Goes with the territory..." (By Larry Wall)

Shinichi I have this sound card on my Dragon plus motherboard. I run SuSE 8.1 pro, the soundcard was autodetected, and just worked out of the box. Does it get detected by Yast? Are you just having problems actually hearing anything? Steve

I am sorry, perhaps I misunderstand, but did you try to set it up W/ yast? You must do two things ,assuming your sound card is correctly detected, turn up the sound to something much louder than the zero default ( let your ears and speakers be your guide ) And if you can here it when you are doing that setup, you next have to open the Kmix app and unmute the items like CD,speakers, pcm, etc. after TAHT you should hear sound. OF course, if you sound card isn't detected things get more complicated and I would refer you to other messages posted about how to compile etc other drivers... It is surprising tho, how often the problem is the mix app and the way it mutes everything by default , so you believe there is a problem that isn't' actually there. -- j nemo me impune lacesset wwEd it's just an afterthought; okay ? : Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder ...

Although this is not helpful to your present problem, one solution is to disable onboard sound and to buy a basic or secondhand Sound Blaster card which is almost universally supported. On the PC here this was the easiest solution and did away with onboard sound problems. I bought the secondhand card from a local shop which within 24 hours will swap or refund the money. Bought in the morning, tested an hour later, checked it worked and kept it. HTH. LW999
