Gnome File Types editor not working anymore
Hi, It seems that my GNOME file associations has all gone haywire. I try to assign OpenOffice documents to open with OpenOffice, but it seems that the changes are not saved. It is stuck on StarOffice, which is not installed anymore. If I change the setting, it seems to accept it, but if I open the file type editor for the type again, it has reverted back to StarOffice.. Can anybody tell me where this information is stored? Looks like the only option is to hack the files where the settings are stored. Any other solutions? Andre, Not sure if it works the same in Gnome as KDE, but after right clicking on the icon you want associated with OO, you should change two things. In KDE, just move OO to the top of the Application Preference Order listing and then select the Embedding tab. There under "Services Preference Order", remove anything that might be listed there, as that will prevent any changes from becoming permanent. No, unfortunately it does not work the same. It seems that the file association setup is much more advanced in KDE (or maybe it just work) than in GNOME. In Nautilus, you can also right-click to select other applications to assign to something. The only problem is that only StarOffice is listed as an option. Then you can go the the 'File Types' editor for that type to manually add an application. You add the path to soffice and select OK. Then, you immediately open the editor again and there, Staroffice is still taring at you from the 'Application to use' selection. Nothing changed... Very frustrating. It worked a month ago. I suppose I upgraded some package that broke it, but I have no clue what it may be, as it worked fine, until I logged out and logged in again. It seems that the Nautilus editor does not apply the changes to the file(s) where the settings are stored. That is why I am looking for those files. It might be a permission problem, and if not, I can at least edit the files. -- Andre Truter Software Engineer Registered Linux user #185282 ICQ #40935899 AIM: trusoftzaf http://www.trusoft.za.net ~ A dinosaur is a salamander designed to Mil Spec ~
