Christopher, no hurt intended truly because it's not your fault, but the very first thing i did was follow your directions to the tee. They didn't work, so I went back into the pam docs and read some more, it says in there more stuff than you mentioned so I took care of that also. It's still crypt. This is version 8 what version are you on? this one is different i hear, yast is a big part of it not just a little config item, a big config item. and if it doesn't work properly it's a big problem. all the lit, it tells you how to do stuff, but when you do it, nothing changes. yast is very reluctant to let go or something. maybe I should try rebooting it or something... I have read massive amounts of info about this stuff over the past several months, i have a pretty good idea of what i'm doing. It takes me about 10 minutes on a Redhat system to successfully make the security adjustments that are now in their 48th hour of attempt on a suse system. not really cool Chris. problems with synaptic

I installed the new synaptic and apt. When I start synaptic, I get the error... "Could not open file /etc/apt/preferences - open (2 No such file or directory)" I click the OK button and the program shuts down. Any thoughts? Tom

Please Help. Cannot boot SuSe.

I'm new to linux and have run into a problem while I was trying to get my mouse wheel working. I followed an article I found on a linux site and changed the mose settings in XF86Config to use IMPS/2 protocol. I then restarted but now I get loads of gibberish (looks like a memory dump) scrolling extremely fast during the boot process and continues forever. I have booted using the boot cd -> rescue system, managed to mount my / partition and renamed the backup XF86Config. But now the system gets as far as "configuring serial devices" and then hangs. Could anybody shed any light on this and help me get SuSe booting again? Cheers, Paul.

vsftpd and symlinks to directory

Hi, how to enable anonymous users to change directory into a symlinks? My anonymous user's ftp root is /usr/local/ftp. I create a symlink to another directory, say "source". But when I tried using the anonymous users to cd to "source", I got message "Fail to change directory". Any helps are appreciated. Regards, Verdi

xwindows word processor recommendations

Hi: I'm looking for a nice word processor which operates under xwindows and supports microsoft *.doc and *.rtf files. Any recommendations? Our organization is fed up with microsoft - we are running a test platform under xwindows and we love it. No action with "Help/<kde_app> handbook"

Hi, for those using kde 3.0.3, have you tried to click menu "Help/<app> handbook" in any KDE applications? I've tried this on 2 machines, one with 8.0 and the other is 7.2. On both machines, this menu triggers no action, no help window is displayed. Also, in dialog boxes (e.g, setting preferences), the "help" button -- which is supposed to perform same action as Help/<app> hadnbook -- does not trigger any action. Regards, Verdi

NVidia driver for 2.4.19 kernel

Hello, Is there a packaged nVidia driver for a 2.4.19 kernel, or do I have to compile my own? I have the last drivers - checked on apt, YOU and nVidia site and they refuse to work, complaining about being compiled for 2.4.18. I'm on a 3.6k connection, so I'd like to avoid downloading the kernel sources. -- mioriticus "Think of it as evolution in action."
