Xfce Questions

Hi all Have managed to get Xfce running...and if I'm not mistaken blackbox or enlightenment can be used as a windowmanager..however I'm not sure what functions are available if running another manager than the default one...and finally, I tried runninjg "startx enlightenment" but to no avail, after installing Xfce this command doesnt work? Why is that? Thankfull for any and all responses Thomas

Thanks, but I just realized my mistake. I got scared when I saw in synaptic 188M, but the actual rpm to download is only 34M. So it's gonna take "only" about 3 hours :) . As for the sources, they're available on the nVidia's site. When I was using RedHat I was always "rolling my own" drivers. -- mioriticus "Think of it as evolution in action."

DHCP host name?

Hi. I want my linux clients to setup their host names from a dhcp server. The IP-numbers works fine but the host name is always set to "linux". Using Yast2 I have in the "Host name and DNS" module checked the "Change host name via DHCP". This I believe sets the variable DHCLIENT_SET_HOSTNAME=yes in the file /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp. But nothing seemingly takes notice of that since host name still is "linux". The script /etc/init.d/boot.localnet sets host name to whatever is found in the file /etc/HOSTNAME, which currently is "linux.local". However I expected the DHCP setup to override this. What am I missing here? The clients are running SuSE 8.0. /Anders

Print an incoming FAX

Hello, I receive faxes from several accounts arround the world as tif files. All the 'faxes' go to individual e-mail addresses. What I would like to do is have the attachments printed out automatically whenever a new fax is received. I use kmail and can identify each 'fax' using the kmail filters. I guess I should then use kmail to pipe the fax to an external scrip to process the mime attachment and print it out. Anyone got an example of how to do this last part, or an alternative solution? set system time ???

First post from a SuSE noobee ;> An associate installed os and time was way, way off. I had him reboot and set cmos clock to gmt/utc; but, when system came up, system time was also gmt/utc. yast2 allowed me to confirm timezone and I changed from local to gmt; but, system time didn't change. So, I ran this from cli: hwclock --hctosys --utc Of course, this works; but, will it stick? /etc/init.d/boot contains the only reference to hwclock that I can find in the init scripts; but, nothing like this invocation. Suse 8.0 crash issues.

Hello, all. We're running an IBM x235 with Suse 8.0, Kernel version smp-2.4.18-57. We've been having it crash about once a day, leaving messages like the following in the /var/log/messages file: Sep 28 00:09:42 brie /usr/sbin/cron[895]: (CRON) error (can't fork) Sep 28 00:25:44 brie kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0xf0/0) Sep 28 00:31:38 brie kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1d0/0) Sep 28 00:31:38 brie kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x70/0) Sep 28 00:31:38 brie kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0xf0/0) Sep 28 00:31:38 brie kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1f0/0) Sep 28 00:31:38 brie last message repeated 2 times Since this looks like a memory management issue, we have 4GB of physical memory and a 2GB swap. Firewall in 8.0/8.1

As much frustration as I've had w/ suse7.2 in the last 4 months I've still decided to give 8.1 a try instead of switching back to Mandrake (7.1 was my first Installed linux). I've been using the simple to use SuSEFirewall (no setup work) w/ my cable connection and it seems to do a reasonable job. My question, since I will be doing a fresh install, is what do I need to do to secure my install from outside attack (sounds so violent) at install time, since my connection is always on. Is SuSEfirewall still included or do I need to learn how to setup SuSEFirewall2 before I do my install?
