Just re-installed a machine --- MySQL problem

Hi, I just backed up my 7.3 SuSE and re-installed 8.0, So far I could get all major things running except MySQL, whereby it is running, but the database is not used via the web. I copied from the old installation the tree /var/lib/mysql to the new system. What have I forgotten to copy as well, and in case I don't have it how can I fix it. I used for the backup tar -cvzf var.lib.tar.gz /var/lib bye Ronald

USB Audio in 7.3 after upgrade to 2.4.16 kernel?

Hello, I recently re-installed SuSE 7.3 Pro on my desktop at home (not ready to upgrade to 8.0). I promptly updated all available packages, including the latest kernel RPM's (2.4.16 AFAIK). However, USB Audio stopped working. I use a XITEL MD-PORT DG2 for copying mp3's to my Minidisc recorder. This used to work great until I upgraded from the stock kernel. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Should I try downgrading to get this functionality back? Does it matter what I'm using for sound (OSS or ALSA)? Any info is appreciated. Thanks. - Greg

Can't open atd.pid to signal atd

Hi! When I boot my SuSE 7.3-Server, I always get this message in 'boot.msg': Running /etc/init.d/boot.local warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh job 29 at 2002-09-01 00:56 Can't open /var/run/atd.pid to signal atd. No atd running? warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh job 30 at 2002-09-01 00:57 Can't open /var/run/atd.pid to signal atd. No atd running? warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh job 31 at 2002-09-01 00:57 Can't open /var/run/atd.pid to signal atd. No atd running? warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh job 32 at 2002-09-01 00:56 Can't open /var/run/atd.pid to signal atd. No atd running? done What is going wrong here? Apt-get (rave)

Suse 8.0 I can't speak highly enough of apt-get It makes for a big increased productivity. If you run your own linux box in a small business it will keep you working. With the Synaptic front end you can select packages to update very easily. If you do not have unlimited bandwidth you can check the size of downloads as well. I tend to go for the small (size) packages where I can. If you are a system administrator, then having apt-get on the Linux boxes you are administering will make a hell of a difference in updating and maintaining them. Potentially the time savings will be huge. Occassionaly you may require a package that is not available for apt-get. I have got the latest Nvidia driver rpm's installed using the rpm installer. Apt-get seems to have tolerated this ok. (I would caution against this though) There is one trade-off. Apt-get is not bleeding edge. But for work you do not want this. You want stability. You may have to wait for some packages to be available as well - but it is worth the wait. This is a great facility for people new to Linux and Suse. I hope it will go straight into the next distro. MySQL problem after re-installed on a new machine
