Top output not adding up.

I copy pasted my top out put below. Not sure if that was a good idea or not. md5 does not work. I followed all the pam directions. I followed all the Yast directions. it doesn't work. so who owns this box me or the neighbor? honestly this is utterly ridiculous. access.conf refuses to work. md5 refuses to work. this box cannot be secured to current standards without a ton and a half of headcaches. it's no wonder my firewall been taking a pounding all day, since I joined this list yesterday I have the most unbelievable number of hits on target ports. the suse ain't online guys. it probably never will be.

I just noticed an updated EMU10K1 driver on SourceForge, and had a question: Has anyone successfully installed the driver? I also have been looking at the DRI project for RADEON drivers. Has anyone gotten these to work on a SuSE Linux 8.0 Pro? -- See Ya' Howard Coles Jr. John 3:16!

Xfce Questions

Hi all Have managed to get Xfce running...and if I'm not mistaken blackbox or enlightenment can be used as a windowmanager..however I'm not sure what functions are available if running another manager than the default one...and finally, I tried runninjg "startx enlightenment" but to no avail, after installing Xfce this command doesnt work? Why is that? Thankfull for any and all responses Thomas

Thanks, but I just realized my mistake. I got scared when I saw in synaptic 188M, but the actual rpm to download is only 34M. So it's gonna take "only" about 3 hours :) . DHCP host name?

Hi. I want my linux clients to setup their host names from a dhcp server. The IP-numbers works fine but the host name is always set to "linux". Using Yast2 I have in the "Host name and DNS" module checked the "Change host name via DHCP". This I believe sets the variable DHCLIENT_SET_HOSTNAME=yes in the file /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp. But nothing seemingly takes notice of that since host name still is "linux". The script /etc/init.d/boot.localnet sets host name to whatever is found in the file /etc/HOSTNAME, which currently is "linux.local". However I expected the DHCP setup to override this. What am I missing here? The clients are running SuSE 8.0. /Anders

Print an incoming FAX

Hello, I receive faxes from several accounts arround the world as tif files. All the 'faxes' go to individual e-mail addresses. What I would like to do is have the attachments printed out automatically whenever a new fax is received. I use kmail and can identify each 'fax' using the kmail filters. I guess I should then use kmail to pipe the fax to an external scrip to process the mime attachment and print it out. Anyone got an example of how to do this last part, or an alternative solution? set system time ???

First post from a SuSE noobee ;> An associate installed os and time was way, way off. I had him reboot and set cmos clock to gmt/utc; but, when system came up, system time was also gmt/utc. yast2 allowed me to confirm timezone and I changed from local to gmt; but, system time didn't change. So, I ran this from cli: hwclock --hctosys --utc Of course, this works; but, will it stick? /etc/init.d/boot contains the only reference to hwclock that I can find in the init scripts; but, nothing like this invocation. Suse 8.0 crash issues.

Hello, all. We're running an IBM x235 with Suse 8.0, Kernel version smp-2.4.18-57. Firewall in 8.0/8.1

As much frustration as I've had w/ suse7.2 in the last 4 months I've still decided to give 8.1 a try instead of switching back to Mandrake (7.1 was my first Installed linux). I've been using the simple to use SuSEFirewall (no setup work) w/ my cable connection and it seems to do a reasonable job. My question, since I will be doing a fresh install, is what do I need to do to secure my install from outside attack (sounds so violent) at install time, since my connection is always on. Is SuSEfirewall still included or do I need to learn how to setup SuSEFirewall2 before I do my install? Christopher, no hurt intended truly because it's not your fault, but the very first thing i did was follow your directions to the tee. They didn't work, so I went back into the pam docs and read some more, it says in there more stuff than you mentioned so I took care of that also. It's still crypt. This is version 8 what version are you on? this one is different i hear, yast is a big part of it not just a little config item, a big config item. and if it doesn't work properly it's a big problem. all the lit, it tells you how to do stuff, but when you do it, nothing changes. yast is very reluctant to let go or something. maybe I should try rebooting it or something... I have read massive amounts of info about this stuff over the past several months, i have a pretty good idea of what i'm doing. It takes me about 10 minutes on a Redhat system to successfully make the security adjustments that are now in their 48th hour of attempt on a suse system. not really cool Chris. I installed the new synaptic and apt. When I start synaptic, I get the error... "Could not open file /etc/apt/preferences - open (2 No such file or directory)" I click the OK button and the program shuts down. Any thoughts? Tom

Please Help. Cannot boot SuSe.

I'm new to linux and have run into a problem while I was trying to get my mouse wheel working. I followed an article I found on a linux site and changed the mose settings in XF86Config to use IMPS/2 protocol. I then restarted but now I get loads of gibberish (looks like a memory dump) scrolling extremely fast during the boot process and continues forever. I have booted using the boot cd -> rescue system, managed to mount my / partition and renamed the backup XF86Config. But now the system gets as far as "configuring serial devices" and then hangs. Could anybody shed any light on this and help me get SuSe booting again? Cheers, Paul.

vsftpd and symlinks to directory

Hi, how to enable anonymous users to change directory into a symlinks? My anonymous user's ftp root is /usr/local/ftp. I create a symlink to another directory, say "source". But when I tried using the anonymous users to cd to "source", I got message "Fail to change directory". Any helps are appreciated. Regards, Verdi

No action with "Help/<kde_app> handbook"

Hi, for those using kde 3.0.3, have you tried to click menu "Help/<app> handbook" in any KDE applications? I've tried this on 2 machines, one with 8.0 and the other is 7.2. On both machines, this menu triggers no action, no help window is displayed. Also, in dialog boxes (e.g, setting preferences), the "help" button -- which is supposed to perform same action as Help/<app> hadnbook -- does not trigger any action. Regards, Verdi

Hello, Is there a packaged nVidia driver for a 2.4.19 kernel, or do I have to compile my own? I have the last drivers - checked on apt, YOU and nVidia site and they refuse to work, complaining about being compiled for 2.4.18.
