I have noticed that I will have ports stuck on FIN_WAIT or CLOSED_WAIT when I am having trouble with netscape. Can I kill the port?? I would like to be able to kill these 'hanging' connections and move on!! I would also like to know how to kick a user out manually, if I decide said user is not playing nicely. On the same topic, how do I watch a user's actions in real time so I can form an opinion about their actions before damage is done?? Could it be your SMB Server? We have NT servers and using smbmount from our SuSE Linux. Hi, Thank you for your answer about the encaps. I renamed it and successfully built the kernel with gcc version egcs-2.90.29. Ok, here's another one :) Do you know how I can build libg++ 2.7.2 with glibc 2 (libc6) When compiling the libio-part the "/usr/include/stdio.h" gets included and it uses some "_IO_cookie..." struct defined in "/usr/include/libio.h" but because the "libio.h" , which does NOT declare/define the struct "_IO_cookie...", is found in directory "." Am porting some of my DSP tools to SuSE (or any linux). Has anyone ported Rougewave tools.h package to Linux? If so I would love the make file. Yes, this is a licensed product, but Rougewave doesn't care what you run on, as long as you paid the licenses. We want to move off our HP's. Hello everyone. I have read the printing How-To and still can't completely solve my printing problems. I have a SuSE 5.2 machinine and print on a remote printer (one with its own IP address). I think my problem is a translation from the European a4 paper to the US letter size paper: My printed postscript files are off center. About one cm from each printed page is chopped off from the top and the margin at the bottom is 1 cm too large. The /etc/apsfilterrc is too cryptic for me to find out how to remedy this. Any quick and easy answer to this problem? (By the way I have had a hard time printing text too. It would come out ina "stepwise" format. Many people on this list have given me helpful advice. Hi, I'm trying to build the 2.0.34 kernel but the build complains when it's running "objdump -k -q" It says: objdump: --illegal option "-k" Is that correct? I've tried with both objdump from binutils 2.8.1 and binutils 2.9.1 I tried to remove the "-k -q" from "OBJDUMP_FLAGS" "/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/Makefile" but it didn't help. Does anyone know why I get this message? The man-page for objdump does not at all includes these options, should they? When I read some mails here I get the impression that many people want to see all software on this planet free or at least GPL'ed. It's an interesting perspective if you think about it. All software is free, that's good for the users but, who will develop this software? If you can't earn any money of doing this work you can't live from it. You have only to think about computer games. How to get the millions of $$ you need for them. This is only an example. I think there are many other things impossible to do without any money to earn. Otherwise, software is easy to publish free. So it's clear that it is the first thing to do so. It's possible that it will be not alone some time in the future... I think it'll be very interesting waiting and watching wich way this all goes. Hi, We're currently using a MHS/SMF70 based email system (XPressIt & Connect2) on our Novell network. The connection to the internet is done with a UUCP gateway. This should be replaced in the future by a SMTP gateway. There are some commercial solutions running under NT, but I want to prefer linux for several reasons ;-) Does anybody knows about a linux gateway between MHS and SMTP? Where _is_ everybody?? I was bored today and discovered that when I select my printer's resolution to be 300x300 (via yast's apsfilter setup) my ps output is a little rough. So I decided to enter 600x600 and I get really crappy output. My printer is a Laserjet 6L and I'm using the ljet4l setting in apsfilter. Anybody running the same printer? Hallo, I have the following Problem: 1. I have to convert a 24-bit uncompressed Tiff-File with a Resolution 508 dpi and only 9 colors (rgb) to a 4-bit tiff-File with the identical 9 colors (rgb) and save it in a lzw compression. 2. I have the same file as a Postscript file with 508dpi 9 colors (rgb) and will get a tiff-file with 4-bit and 9 colors (exakt the same rgb value). When I use ghostscript so I can not use the driver for tifflzw because this driver is not working correct. Have anyone a correct driver to do this or can anyone help me please. I learned something the hard way today. I smbmounted from an NT box and all the filenames came across uppercase. This was never a problem until I tried to use the 32X CDROM drive on the NT side to (re)install Mathematica. I found out the hard way that I could not run the scripts for Linux because they were looking for mixed case file names. I looked over the man page for smbmount and did not see a switch for preserving case. Is there another tool that works better? Or perhaps a switch I didn't see. or even a newer version of smbmount that preserves case? I'm trying to create a swap space larger than 128MB. Fdisk gives a warning that linux will not use larger than 128MB of swap space but it still seems to create the swap space of 1024MB. Most people won't My company does CFD and FEA work 1024MB of swap is small for us. This machine is a development machine. We have machines running AIX with over 4GB of swap. oh well I just want to thank everybody for the info. I wonder if anyone can give me a bit of advice re: lilo ? I have just upgraded the Hard drive in my Linux box and the old one is destined to upgrade my wife's Windoze machine ......however I seem to have left lilo in the mbr after reformating it and it wont boot win95 :-) I know there's a linux command line to return the mbr to it's original state......can someone let me know what it is, and I assume that I will have to re-install a basic system to use it or is there a better method of achieving the same result? I'm very happy with the way KDE, kppp, and Netscape interact. I get a major blast from playing/using with the Gimp, emacs,..., but when it comes to printing, well, I get an entire page shrunken down to a quarter page, and there's not even consecutive "pages" on the same sheet. It's nice sharp print, and I feel kinda proud I can read it, but there are times when I have to put it on the other side of a pitcher of water to be certain.<g> I'm using an HP DJ 890.... I set it up using Yast. I chose "letter," and left it at 300x300dpi. It prints color, but when printing from XV, the jpg images from Gimp are shrunken as is text. I looked at the .aps... file and changed to Feature=1, but there was no change (even after rebooting,... I killed the lpd and brought it back to save a rebooting, but when that didn't work, I thought it was worth a reboot.) I've also never gotten the thing to even print anything from the Gimp menu. The box in the print dialogue box is always solid black. Any help would be much appreciated. I've checked the SuSE database and have looked at DejaNews, as well. I doubt I'm the only one to have this problem, and often I'd wait for someone else to speak up, but this is of enough interest that I decided to "speak up." Thanks very much for any assistance. I have installed a printer successfully on my system, but when u try to print I get the message that the spool has been created but that lpd is noit running and need sto be started. Surely I shouldn't have to start lpd every time I need to print? However when I reboot my machine the document prints without any problems. Is there a command or a switch that behaves opposite of grep? I would like to do a 'ps -auxw| {command} root' so that i could see all of the processes on a machine that aren't being run by root. I am using SuSE 5.2 with KDE 1.0 and Diamond G460 (i740 chipset). XFree don't support the i740, so I choose the Accelerated X, it works fine, but I have problems with KDM, I can't use the KDM, because KDM expects xdm an no Xaccel to be the display manager. Right now I start in init level 2 and then run startx. I want to start in level 3 (graphic login) with KDM, any clue? Greetings, I have setup a home network and have a firewall/gateway system setup on a SuSE 5.2 system. I also have another SuSE client system behind the firewall and I'm trying to get sendmail working on both systems. I have sendmail working between the gateway and Linux client box. The problem I'm seeing is if there is email that is local to my network, the gateway system is still using my ISP's mailserver rather than simply making a connection to my Linux client directly. Is there any tweaking that can be done to the sendmail.cf file to make sendmail on my gateway system directly send email to my Linux client box? The change I made to sendmail.cf on my gateway system is to use my ISP's SMTP server as a "smart" relay. This works fine for sending email to the outside world but I need to have the gateway not use my ISP's mailserver when sending email back to my client behind the firewall. This can happen if for some reason the the mail daemon needs to return the message because it undeliverable for some reason. I have two Syquest drives and a CDROM that I want to export from my SuSE 5.1 machine A (192.168.11.11) to another Linux machine B (192.168.11.50) on my network (192.168.11.0). I have DNS (intra.net - private domain name) set up in A with both Name->IP and IP->Name mappings. Initially, per man exports, I had the following line in /etc/exports: /ez1 192.168.11.*/255.255.255.0 # all machines on the 192.168.11.0 network However, on B I get "permission denied" message when I try to mount any of the exported file systems from A with above format. When I changed the format to that shown below, I am able to mount them. [SuSE Linux] AMD K6-2/333 MHz Compatible with SUSE 5.3??

Some Linux implementations are very selective about which hardware they will be compatible with. For example Red Hat 5.1 sometimes won't work very well with AMD CPUs. My question is, will SUSE 5.3 be compatible with the high end AMD processors such as the K6-2/333 MHz? I'm getting ready to install a Powerleap adapter on my Packard Bell (PB600) Pentium 75 MHz, which will allow me to install an AMD K6-2 or an Intell 233MMX processors. Without the Powerleap adapter I can only upgrade to an Intel 130 MHz. I really like the features of SUSE Linux with KDE and would like to install it on my PC. AMD is the only processor that will allow me the 333 MHz speed, so I must be sure that SUSE won't "freeze" up on me! Yes I agree that an AMD chip runs just about any normal program with ease and it is cheep, like databases,word processing that not so demanding game(a good game) and LINUX just fine. No not multi- processing, well if you can find the like one or two socket 7 mainboards that have 2 sockets for 2 CPUS..well just maybe(they are out there just way rare). Intel users wont have much of a problem anywhere except in thier pocketbook. Which seriously counts. Oh I gota job I can pay for it?! Well on top of my other bills, rent, car, utilites, ect..heh. Maybe I put that intel CPU on my creditcard. Anyways Intel is a great X86 cpu maker..just the cost, and they don't let AMD copy it exactly so there are going to be problems with cutting edge software. Maybe patches to fix things for different programs but not in a first release or so. I do own a AMD K6-233 and been very happy with it for what is it 2 years now? (almost) Running a 1meg cache. Which you wont see in an Intel unless you buy a Xeon with the 1Meg cache at (US$7,000.00) all intel's have 512K or less L2. Yes cache counts, heh you see the Celron selling much? Not at all, or at least I'd never ever buy one. AMD-K6-3DNOW looks very good from what I have seen, and for the price of a CPU Intell PII400(US$600) I can get a mainboard/cpu/ram/diskdrive/case/ect for 300-500 of AMD. And run almost as fast... My 10Cents. I solved this just by compiling the mouse support directly into the kernel (first it was a module as yours). I don't know why, but it worked. Hope that helps. Hi- I am running SuSE 5.2/Kernel 2.0.33 For some reason my PS/2 mouse no longer loads. I have had this distribution installed for about 2 months; prior to that, I have used RedHat going back to the 2.x days. This is a first for this problem for me. I have seen other posts in Usenet by people not configuring mouse support in the kernel, but I always configure it in. I first noticed this problem when I tried to fire up X- that failed then I looked at the boot message. And here it is: Starting console mouse support. (gpm) /usr/bin/gpm: /dev/mouse: No such device ...yet my /etc/conf.modules file contains the following line: alias char-major-10 psaux I re-ran YAST and reselected PS/2 mouse support. Upon re-boot, no go- still doesn't find it. Has anything changed? Well, I installed KDE 1.0 last night. I rebooted twice after that with no trouble. Could it be a bad mouse? Well, it works fine under W95. The connection is tight, too. If the mouse is fine, what the heck could have caused it to no longer load? Does anyone have positive experience with Staroffice? I have not gotten it to run. The original verion 4.0 got a segmentaion error after the second screen. Then I downloaded their service pack 3 - full version of 51 Meg. Installed - it's not crashing anymore but hangs - i. e. the buttons of their file manager-like interface stop to function and the CPU consumption of staroffice approaches 100 %. The window surface occupied by staroffice becames inactive too. When I move another window over the staroffice area, it leaves a trail of the window moved on in this area. The program has to be killed -9'ed. Phone support would be an international call to Germany. [SuSE Linux] Segmentation fault - could it be memory related?

I moved a 32MB 168 SDRAM from another machine to my SuSE 5.1 machine. POST reports that everything is OK with the Memory with each Power ON or C-A-D. Since putting this DIMM I have experienced random 'segmentation fault' and 'core dump' two times today. First time it was during shutdown of routing whilst shutting down and the second time it was from SMB servers whilst booting up. The 'seg. fault' did not lock up the machine and in each instance the subsequent shutdown/boot up processes completed successfully. On subsequent shutdown and reboot things were OK. Interestingly enough, when I had this DIMM in a Win95 machine it would cause random lock up of the machine and I would have to reset the machine. Can a memory chip be flaky, yet pass POST tests and subsequently be the cause for segmentation fault? Is there any way to test out the DIMM besides the POST? Any comments from those who have experienced similar symptoms? [SuSE Linux] Pppd reports "Serial line looped back"

Here's what happens: I call pppd, the modem picks up, I hear dialtone for about a second, then the modem hangs up. I'm sure it's not a problem with the chatscript because I am using the same chatscript and /etc/ppp/options file that has served me nicely for several months now. I can tell you what might be the problem: the network settings in /etc and other setup files. I know I should know better than to go against the reccomendations of Yast, esspecially when the system operates correctly, but I was experimenting with routing, hostnames, DNS etc, etc... What I need is some way to repair or replace these files to support basic ppp with dynamic IP, remote server assigned hostname and default route, plus my local loopback. PPP and loopback are the ONLY network interfaces that I ever use, so I hope it's not too difficult to fix. I would even consider a re-install of all network packages in Yast if that would fix it. Hello, I am running kernel 2.0.32 (I forgot which SUSE dist). I have a Jaz drive tower, 5 jaz drives hanging on the SCSI bus. These drives are used for backup mon,tues,wed,thr,fri. The system usually works great, at midnight it mounts the appropriate jaz disk, copies the data and unmounts the device. On occasions the jaz drive reaches 100 can do to get Linux to umount the device??? Any suggestions? I'm pretty new to linux and am still confused to a certain extent on the issues behind GPL etc. But my understanding of Linux is that Linux is the kernel only and the rest distributions who are free to put anything on top. [notice: this is a modified version of another post] Hi, The "Linux Standards Association" was just announced on slashdot and is drawing a lot of flack. I think the Linux community needs to take notice. Read <A HREF="http://www.linuxstandards.org"><A HREF="http://www.linuxstandards.org</A">http://www.linuxstandards.org</A</A>> and see for yourself what's up. Reminds me of what almost (maybe did) happen to the X standard a few months back. They have all the bad charms, like vetos for paying members, the right to ban uncooperative members and (TM)'s all over the place. The fact remains that these people claim to provide a standards and reference organisation for all Linux and they intend to sell (literally) their concept to Big Corporations interested in porting their software to Linux. Before they get a foothold in too many doorsteps, SuSE, Red Hat, Debian and the users and developers in the Linux Community should take a good look at what's going on here and make a firm statement, ideally not in an uncontrolled screaming manner (which is probably going to happen in places like c.o.l.advocacy anyway.) [SuSE Linux] How to patch SuSE 5.2 kernel?

I was going to upgrade my kernel from the SuSE 5.2 supplied 2.0.33 to 2.0.34 and found that applying the normal 2.0.34 source patch trashes my kernel source base and I am forced to reinstall the kernel source. In looking at what I installed in YaST it looks like I installed some sort of SuSE modified kernel source which includes additional drivers. If I want to upgrade my kernel do I have to download a new 2.0.35 kernel source set from the SuSE FTP site? I tried the 2.0.34 patch from the SuSE FTP site and "patch" failed and left my 2.0.33 source code in some inconsistant state and so I had yet another kernel source install from the distribution CDROM. [SuSE Linux] Realplayer 5.0

Hi, I have just spent way too much time trying to setup realplayer 5.0. Unsuccessfully, :( .I have rvplayer5.0 and netscape installed in /opt. I have read all the docs that came with rvplayer5.0. I tried to follow the directions exactly and failed. I then tried to just understand them and attempt to tailor them to my SuSE setup and failed again. If I open Communicator 4.05 and then Realplayer and then click sites and Real home, realplayer says it can't find Netscape. If I try to setup the MIME type for realaudio-plugin, I don't get plugins as an option. I have plugins directories in ~/.netscape and /opt/netscape. I symlinked /opt/netscape to /usr/local/netscape because realplayer seemed to think it should be in /usr/local (I think???). I know somebody out there has done this correctly, how'd you do it? If I type "which rvplayer", I get /opt/rvplayer5.0/rvplayer. If I do "which netscape" I get nothing (because I have communicator 4.05). Is realplayer literally looking for "netscape"? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated, Steve p.s. Hi all, I have a really dum question about YAST configuration of network printing. Suppose there is a printer with an IP address foo.domain.name. In administerating remote printers, YAST asks to fill in four entries: 1) Name of the printer 2) Spool directory (This is filled automatically) 3) Server name 4) Name of printer on the server I am not sure what it is exactly meant here by server name and the printer name. The printer has its own IP address. Can someone shed light on this for me. [SuSE Linux] Netscape offline and SuSE

Hi all, I recently migrated to S.u.S.E from Redhat. (5.1 upgrade sent me running) So far so good and besides, any distro that mentions Frank Zappa in the "Laurels" section of the Intro in the manual is alright with me. 8^[* However, one thing that's making me a little crazy is the fact that I can't keep Netscape running now unless I'm on line. I never had this problem with RedHat. I've tried the stock RPM that came with SuSE and the 4.05, 4.06 and 4.5 tarballs and if I'm not on line the program either freezes on startup or will freeze after just a few minutes of use. I have it configured to load a local file (the HOWTO index) on startup so it's not like it needs to do a DNS lookup or anything. If I'm online it works great. I only post this here since I never had the problem until switching to S.u.S.E. Can anyone please give me a clue? [SuSE Linux] Communicator 4.5, bus error, and release notes

Hey- I ftp'd communicator 4.5 and installed it. I configured it for mail and newsgroups, etc, but when I tried to run it the next time I got a bus error. Anybody know what this means? Also, the README or whatever text file that is packaged with it, refers one to the release notes. Anybody know where these are? I went back to ftp.netscape.com, and searched through the unix dirs, but couldn't find it! [SuSE Linux] Advice on LAN

I'd appreciate any advice on best way to do this and equipment to purchase. I will shortly have an ISDN connection and router (courtesy of employer). This will mean I can hopefully stop using my modem and get a LAN card (which one?). I will shortly also have an iMac (sucker for new toys) so I will want to get them all to talk. Hi We saw the light and start using Linux... We using Linux and apache to run out intranet server...we have a few problem hopefully someone can help me ? The package use to generate the html file are on Microsoft PC - when we FTP this html files to Linux it appear in the htdocs directory, but there is now ''all'' permission. As soon as me change this permission with chmod it is possible to view the pages.. I have FreeBSD on my system too. Not crazy about the ports myself like the SuSE rpm system a lot more. I found it was really hard to install my printer in FreeBSD. Also I found they always a bit late with their upgrades example KDE. And it runs slower then linux. Kernel was a bit of a pain to to compile, have to edit a text file, no xconfig(didn't like that). Something I thought was weird was the Linux programs ran faster then FreeBSD Native program in Linux Emulator mode. [SuSE Linux] 2 minor configuration problems

I just installed Suse 4.4.1 (kernel 2.0.29) and have 2 problems. Soundcard (ESS ES1688, SB compatible) works, but audio CD's are played with inferior sound quality. Second problem: graphics card is a S3Virge 325 with 4M, but cannot get it to work with more than 8bpp at 1024x768. If I force X to start with more than 8bpp colors (with DefaultColorDepth in XF86Config), I get only 800x600. Even so, SuSE is a great distribution. Does any one know if and otherwise when SuSE will make an Alpha distribution. My colleque is running RedHat, but he has the same problems with RedHat that I had before I switched to SuSE. Glint that doesn't work, the user manager that isn't 1000ke etc... He wants SuSE also, but having an Alpha it is a whole lot of work to change all the make files and compile all tha packages. No, the problem is not the NT's password encryption this time (nor is it any lock file problem by mixing ttyS1/cua1). The ppp-connection is established *beyond* the password enquiry. WinNT says, that ppp were now established. In the linux server's /var/log/messages I can read the unencrypted login/password. When watching the DUN-monitor of WinNT and the Linux server activity via 'tail -f messages', I can see, that both show the IP-address of the other peer as connected, but that only Linux will send packages to WinNT during it's ping. A ping on WinNT however will not result in the transfer of any packages ... I'd like to use it, but have only found it in RedHat/Glibc2 versions. More appropriately, I'm looking to install it so that I can run ICQ for Java.
