[SuSE Linux] Itsy-bitsy printing
I'm very happy with the way KDE, kppp, and Netscape interact. I get a major blast from playing/using with the Gimp, emacs,..., but when it comes to printing, well, I get an entire page shrunken down to a quarter page, and there's not even consecutive "pages" on the same sheet. It's nice sharp print, and I feel kinda proud I can read it, but there are times when I have to put it on the other side of a pitcher of water to be certain.<g> I'm using an HP DJ 890.... I set it up using Yast. I chose "letter," and left it at 300x300dpi. It prints color, but when printing from XV, the jpg images from Gimp are shrunken as is text. I looked at the .aps... file and changed to Feature=1, but there was no change (even after rebooting,... I killed the lpd and brought it back to save a rebooting, but when that didn't work, I thought it was worth a reboot.) I've also never gotten the thing to even print anything from the Gimp menu. The box in the print dialogue box is always solid black. Any help would be much appreciated. I've checked the SuSE database and have looked at DejaNews, as well. I doubt I'm the only one to have this problem, and often I'd wait for someone else to speak up, but this is of enough interest that I decided to "speak up." Thanks very much for any assistance. for this in GIMP, if it offers you the ability to print to a file, I have done the following: elect appropriate printer driver from the print menu (by default it offers a postscript "driver") print to a file, whem prompted for a filename use the device name for your printer (ie: /dev/lp1) it will then print as if it were intended to :)

You need to edit the file /etc/apsfilterrc. Bring it up in your favorite editor and search for FEATURE. You should replace the default of FEATURE=2n with FEATURE=1n to print one page per sheet of paper. Luck, Mark --- Gerry Eichner wrote:

I'm pretty sure I did that and didn't notice any change, but I'll go back and double check on Monday. Again, it's printing small enough for 4 pages to a page, and it's not continuing the printing of multipage docs on the same sheet. I thought "Feature=2n" gives one consecutive pages on the same sheet, and I'm not getting that. Thanks, Gerry Mark Wagnon wrote: > > You need to edit the file /etc/apsfilterrc. I have such a mouse and am not sure if I should use ps2 or Logitech protocol to get it to work. It has an adaptr that will convert the mouse to tandard serial, but it doesn't seem to help it operate even though my old mouse was standard serial/MS compatible. I know it may well be too much to ask, but it'd be nice to have the scroll wheel to operate too. :) I would be using both gpm and XfCOM_SiS X-server with this mouse. I suspect I'd be compiling a kernel to support it, then run Yast to set the correct /dev/mouse link, then run XFConfig in Yast to set up it to use the link /dev/mouse, and the correct protocol. Even though this mouse can be used with the ps2 or serial connector, I would prefer the ps2 connector. I could have a free serial port to connect a UPS that way. -Art Coates Jr. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
I would start with the the PS/2 protocal. See www.freshmeat.net from yesterday There was a nice little program posted to activate the scroll function on a MS and Logitech mouse. You may wish to give it a spin....but use at your own risk,,,,you know the saying regards ch Art Coates Jr. wrote:

Hello Art. I have the same mouse for my laptop at work. Use the PS/2 and set it up in YaST. If you have the SuSE kernel installed all is well. If you have installed your own, you should re-compile with PS/2 support. -Dee --------------------------------------------------- W.D.McKinney (Dee) deem@wdm.com <A HREF="http://www.wdm.com"><A HREF="http://www.wdm.com</A">http://www.wdm.com "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few." --------------------------------------------------- - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
You might want to take a look at this web page: <A HREF="http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/"><A HREF="http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/</A">http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/ I use the logitech mouseman+ and I have successfully configured it to work under x in both xemacs and netscape. It is supposed to work with kde also, but I haven't figured that out yet! 8-) I would say check out this page first because it is aimed at all scrool mice, where as the imwheel app is only written for microsoft mice and my not work 100% with logitech (this is only speculation because I never really tried it. ok, hope that helped. The problem is just as you describe, and the 2n to 1n trick will not work with it. I'm convinced the driver is broken! The fix is to select the cdj550 driver, which will work with the 890C, but will not give great color output. ------------------------------------------- Man's mind is his basic tool of survival! Hi! Trying to kill the keyboard, geichner@cyberia.com produced: [prints 1/4 page size]
I'm using an HP DJ 890.... I set it up using Yast. I chose "letter," and left it at 300x300dpi. It prints color, but when printing from XV,
Maybe up the dpi to 600x600. Maybe your printer thinks it gets that resolution -- at 300x300 you'd get a quarter page. Just guessing though -- I don't know the printer.
the jpg images from Gimp are shrunken as is text. I looked at the ..aps... file and changed to Feature=1, but there was no change (even
Feature=2 or Feature=2n would give you 2 pages per page of paper, not 4. -Wolfgang -- PGP 2 welcome: Mail me, subject "send PGP-key". If you've nothing at all to hide, you must be boring.
