[opensuse] boot32.efi for 64 bits processor and Leap

Hello, We see more and more often very small but powerfull computers, atom multicore 64 bits, but with UEFI 32 bits firmware. I have one now ("It Works TW891" paid 129€ - 32Gb ssd + 2Gb ram, runs almost perfectly windows 10 32bits or Debian 64bits). these computers can be installed with 64 bits distros, but they need absolutely a 32 bits loader. Right now I on ly know of the hybrid debian 32/64bits dvd to be able to install. Notice that *only the loader* have to be 32bits, the generic name being boot32.efi copying a generic loader to the Leap EFI folder allows booting, and probably installing (I couldn't make all the tests), but the generic one gives only a grub prompt, not handy. Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. I usually take the newest openSUSE kernel (from repository Kernel_stable). But since some month I have a DVB T2 HD card, which requires a patch (see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194171) So I need to compile kernels myself. I have a working compilation path. But the current path has 12 steps! It takes some time. I wonder, why it is so complicated to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE. Is there a better/easier/automated way to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE? I know this blog article. But the article uses Vanilla kernels and also needs 6 steps. With additional patches (4 steps), third-party modules (2 steps) and cleanup (1 step) the article would also need 13 steps: Compiling the Linux Kernel, the SUSE way https://www.suse.com/communities/blog/compiling-de-linux-kernel-suse-way/ This is my Kernel configuration, compilation and installation path: 1. [opensuse] Raid, Raid6, what file system for good fault tolerance?

Hi list, speaking about software raid, not hardware controller based. I am trying to go for some local OpenSuse machine and adding some storage to it. Was considering Raid6, and now reading about a bit and people left and right scaremongering about the larger the disks these days in the double digit terabyte capacities even, the more likely it is that during a reconstruction of a raid subsequent errors would occur. I would absolutely like to keep my data consistent, and I am not thinking about double digit terabytes either, would stick to 2TB or 4TB disks, with Raid6 thats at least 4 physical drives. Now I am wondering if it possible to use a good robust file system that can add some more parity or check blocks or redundancy on top of the hardware disks, to absolutely be able to always read my data. I can't add multiple machines or like those high availability stuff like clusters and what not I read about DRBD (Distributed Replicated Block Device), or maybe I am just too scared by those technical terms or consider myself to be just a simpleton and wanting to keep it rather simple. My use case here is also not constant availablity, when a disk needs to be replaced, so be it, but I don't want to lose my data that I can not ever read certain parts of it again or such stuff. The thing that came to my mind was, if there is some file systems that would add redundancy and robustness onto the mdraid system of the linux kernel? Anyone with some useful insights? Roughly speaking, I was considering some simple pcie esata interfaced controller card and an external case enclosure with esata port and portmulitplier stuff inside, that can present at least 4 physical disks as JBOD, just a bunch of disks, so that the Linux can seem them all separately. Speed and rebuild times are not my concern, but data persistence and data integrity. Not even number of physical disks, I could live with even one of those 8 bay device enclosures and cases that are out there on the market. [opensuse] Spec'ing a 50 TB dedicated storage subsystem and room to grow?

All, I bought a used iSCSI based Drobo in 2016 with 50TB in it. It works great, but it isn't fast by today's standards. (100 MB/sec absolute max). And I never got it to work from openSUSE (Windows and Mac did work). I now need to buy something similar, but with fast I/O and Linux support: 10 Gbit Ethernet and fibre-channel may be my only options? Or are there point-to-point SAS external racks I should consider? Also, I will likely want to put a SSD based cache in the mix at some point. It could be integrated into the storage subsystem, or I could use something like bcache and have the SSD be in the server,. It just needs to be reliable and fast. Recommendations? (I'm thinking used and $10K at the high-end for the subsystem including PCIx cards and switches, if needed.) == details I need to buy a server with 50TB usable disk for a production environment. A high speed disk subsystem is critical. And the project may scale up over time. It doesn't need to be a fail-over cluster, just a single server. I'm looking at used equipment most likely. I was thinking one with 4 CPU sockets would let me start with 2 CPUs and then expand to 4 later on. Lots of RAM capacity would also be great. I only see 2TB drives max. I'm hoping to use a Dell server because it's the preferred brand at my (new) job. Unless I'm missing something a standalone rack mount Dell won't work. I picked it because it is only a 5-year old design and it has 4 CPU sockets I can expand into as the server demand increases over time. Hi, everyone! Recently, as I told on another thread, I installed openSUSE in dual boot with Windows. I would like to encrypt a partition I use to store my personal files (Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music and Videos). I want to use a file system that can be mounted read/write on both Linux and Windows. Is there any recommendation/advising/suggestion on which encrypted file system I could use to achieve that? I searched the opensuse and opensuse-factory mailing lists and didn't find any for Leap 42.3 and 15.0. openSUSE docs talks about LUKS, but I googled briefly and LUKS support on Windows is abandonware... There are a few firmware files I need to down load to get my wireless running. I thought in Firefox, if you clicked on a file, there was a way to select downloading. Now all I get is a dump in hexedit. Is there something to set up to restore this basic capability? I printed out this article- https://au.pcmag.com/software/138/guide/the-best-vpn-services-of-2018 but the table at the beginning of the article won't print -- the printing begins with the Heading then skips the table of the various VPNs and continues from "VPNs Keep You Safe Online". I had to use the Firefox Add-on 'Screengrab' to save that table to a file and then printed that *.png file. Any thoughts as to why that table will not print as part of that article but has to be saved as a separate file in order to print it? (Using Leap 15.0 [with kernel 4.17.11-3], Firefox v 60.0.1esr, and the printer is Epson Expression Photo XP-960.) I'm trying to bring up mythweb. I've discovered that it's a separate package but am somewhat confused. Most of mythtv is v0.28 from packman and there is a mythweb package that is also 0.28, but there are also 0.27 & 0.26 versions and I'm not clear why. That's minor though, the main problem is that when I try to install mythweb I see an error: nothing provides apache2-mod_php5 But the only PHP module for apache seems to be v7: apache2-mod_php7 - PHP7 module for the Apache 2.x webserver and that is installed. Now according to https://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/12588 that problem was encountered three years ago and was fixed in mythweb two years ago apparently in v0.27. So 0.28 should be OK. Hi, Apparently for tethering my laptop to my mobile phone I can configure to use 2.4 or 5 Ghz. So I wonder which uses less battery - on each side. If it is a significant difference. When I boot Leap 15 the vertical pipe symbol doesn't work. Instead it prints '>' and backslash prints '<'. I have a UK keyboard that has always worked fine. So I go into YaST/Hardware/System Keyboard and I see that it says I have English(UK) selected. So I type in the Test box and see >< instead of what I should see. So I select English(US) and then select English(UK) again and type again and this time see |\. Which would be fine except this happens every time I boot. Which is very annoying. Good evening from Singapore, I am torn between deploying Exchange 2016 and Linux-based SMTP servers like sendmail, postfix, qmail and exim. Relative ease of installation and configuration is an important consideration factor. Exchange 2016, Domain Controller, and Active Directory are relatively easy to install and configure. Linux-based SMTP servers are extremely difficult to install and configure and of course, extremely time-consuming. One of the features of Exchange 2016 is that you can create additional folders on your Inbox in the server (server-side). Can Linux-based SMTP servers do that? Does Exchange 2016 offer more user-friendly features or Linux-based SMTP servers? Besides the above considerations, how about security? Traditionally, Linux is far more secure than Windows. Judging by security, Linux-based SMTP servers ought to have a higher percentage of the market share? Finally, I can only use Windows Server 2016 Standard Evaluation Copy FREE for a period of 3 years MAXIMUM. But I can use Linux servers and Mail Transport Agents (MTA) FREE perpetually. Please advise. For example, if I press Alt-F2, to do some function, and start typing, it takes a few seconds for the characters to appear. I am running Leap 42.3 and recently purchased an Alienware 13 R3 laptop that contains: 1. Qualcomm Atheros Killer E2500 Gigabit Ethernet Controller 2. Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 80211 ac Wireless Network Controller I ran Yast networking and no devices were discovered. Is there a way, some switch in modprobe perhaps, to tell which module is required? Is there an opensuse procedure or some other advice? I looked on google and found some Ubuntu links, but nothing relating to opensuse. LS, As is custom with previous releases of opensuse, leap 15 also has a unsupported and in linux terms ancient os embraced. I just wonder, why not use a LTS linux instead of an OS the opensuse developers have to maintain themself? Of course there is more ancient software like old gcc software etc. Okay, it is tried and stable and it compiles software which does not compile under 8.1 without modification due to syntax errors. A lot of old other stuff too. I do use TW when developing and in all those years it turns out as quite stable except for some glitches happening once a year. It feels like it is good enough for day to day office work, but if you want a little more... I have tried dolphin, nautilus, thunar, gnome commander. Some offer creating soft-links, I want hard links this time. Even Midnight Commander can't: it creates hard link only for the currently selected file only, and asks for destination name. Single file and prompt, so no use for this. Nautilus, for instance, can create soft-links on the selection, but then can not select a bunch of files by pattern. I have to select all, then delete by pattern using something else. Thunar can select by pattern, but not create links of any kind instead of copy. No tool is complete yet? Then Nautilus goes nuts, processing my directory that I'm trying to link, which is full of photos, doing the preview of a thousand photos. Both on the original and the copy. Why is kodi logging under .wine? I just did a search to find if kodi made any logs. I was very surprised to find a log in /home/piglet/home/dhoworth/.wine/dosdevices/y:/.kodi/temp/kodi.log /home/piglet/home/dhoworth/ is a data directory where I keep most of my personal files. Lots of things have symbolic links from /home/dhoworth to there because there is more space there. e.g. /home/dhoworth/Pictures -> ../piglet/home/dhoworth/Pictures/ .wine is there because in the dim and distant past it used to actually be my home directory and in those dim and distant days I occasionally used wine, but I haven't used it for ages. Seriously? snapperd runs whenever I start or stop a service in YaST? Isn't that a little over the top? It makes my system slow to a crawl for ages whilst it presumably snapshots the filesystem, just because I started a service? Is there any way to change that (other than the obvious way of not using that function in YaST)? [opensuse] chromium update?

I've just got a 'security' update for chromium, together with an 'optional' update. The optional update lists a load of ffmpeg packages which on my system come from packman, not opensuse. So my instinct was to refuse the optional update. So I accepted the security update and it said it wants to 'conditionally update' (=install) libavutil56, libavcode58, libswresample3 and libavformat58. That would mean I have a mixture of libav* components from packman and opensuse. Is that wise? What is supposed to happen here? [opensuse] tvheadend access control

I want to try tvheadend as an alternative to mythtv. I installed the package and started the service from YaST. It's running. I believe all setup is supposed to be done through its web interface at http://localhost:9981/ but when I go there I am presented with an 'Authentication Required' dialog. I gather that the vanilla tvheadend is open-access when shipped and any required access control is added after installation and configuration from within the web interface. So I can only suppose that somebody decided unrestricted access was dangerous and modified the program before shipping the opensuse version. I've tried a few obvious candidate name-password pairs. I've looked in what seem to me to be the obvious places for any documentation, or configuration file that contains details of the required username and password, but have failed to find any such. So I just had YaST crash on me and then, and then when I ran save_y2logs that had an error and then whilst trying to report the bug, bugzilla crashed: Secure Connection Failed The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified. Please contact the web site owners to inform them of this problem. Further, it appears that the bug was not recorded! It's title started "yast software manager crashed ..." and a search of bugzilla doesn't find it. I'm not about to try resubmitting 5 MB of logs without some kind of assurance that it's not going to do exactly the same again. [opensuse] libreoffice save-as / load

Hi, before 2 tumbleweed libreoffice updates when "save as" in libreoffice always was the last directory active (the directory where the document was loaded before), but now always i fallback to my "home directory" -> file open "home directory" -> save as "home directory" (and my old filename is not displayed any more so its not possible to change a number or so in side file name easily (document1 -> document2), always have to move to the directory i want to save, and type complete filename new. is this bug or a feature? and if a feature, where could i get the old behavior back? I'm planning to install MythTV. It's not clear to me so far exactly what I need to install or what I need to do. YaST lists a bunch of mythtv packages from packman. The latest available seems to be 27 whilst I understand the current version of mythtv is 29. I don't see any particular package that installs it. The closest I have found is mythtv-0_27-setup and its description says "MythTV provides a unified graphical interface for recording and viewing television programs. Refer to the mythtv package for more information. This package contains only the setup software for configuring the mythtv backend." But there is no mythtv package listed. As it happens, I think I do want the backend, because I'm installing a tuner card (TBS6205) so I can record programmes. I intend to then export them over my network to a FireTV box plugged into my TV and running kodi, although I'm open to better ideas. I don't yet know whether I'll want any separate means of controlling what mythtv records on the server. google has led me to the mythtv wiki but I haven't found anything there that fills me with confidence yet. https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Setup_General seems close but is for the current version, not the old version on packman. google also shows various people apparently overwhelmed by complexity, which is why I'd like to find an accurate set of instructions. Does anyone have experience with or use a package(rpm) that can act as printer, and print the result to an Adobe-PDF formatted file? Looking for something like Adobe's "Pdf-printer" software that they used to sell...that would act as an installed printer on Windows -- that you just printed to -- and a popup would ask for the name of the file for it to save-to, but that would run on linux. Hello: It will be a little bit long to explain what I want to do. I have several linux OS-es on a hard disk. Each OS has its own boot loader installed on the OS's root partitition. The MBR has also a boot loader. This boot loader chainloads the other boot loaders on the root partitions. This makes easy to completely separate different boot menus for different OS-es. For the management of the above scenario at least one of the OS-es must have 2 different boot loader install configurations, one for the mbr boot loader (chainloader) and one for the OS's own boot loader on the root partition. This can be easily done by using legacy GRUB boot loader by making two separate directories for the chainloader and the other configuration. Each directory contains all the files necessary to install and make work GRUB boot loader. Legacy GRUB has command option --prefix which enables to use different GRUB config files for different GRUB installations. Here's an example: To install MBR grub chainloader: In grub shell I use: setup --force-lba --prefix=/boot/grub.chainload (hd0) (hd0,0) # in this case config files in /boot/grub.chainload dir are used. And to install the OS's own boot loader on the root partition: setup --force-lba (hd0,0) (hd0,0) # here the default /boot/grub is used. Now my question: how can I do the same with GRUB2? I would like to have a main GRUB2 menu/loader on the MBR which chainloads GRUB2 loaders on the different root partitions. Since GRUB2 configuration files are spotted at different places (/etc/default/grub, /boot/grub2/grub.cfg, /etc/grub.d/* scripts), I don't know how I could make different configuration files for the different install locations, not to mentions how I could install the different GRUB2 loaders to different locations (to mbr and to the root partition). I would appreciate any help in this matter. Hi, using evince in kde/plasma tumbleweed. some questions: 1) sometimes when started, its in very small windows, and i am not able to resizeit by moving mouse courser to the frame and press button and move. only right klick at top frame and selecting resize will change size. Ok, with my new TW installation, I received the higher version of Thunderbird for email - it is 59.2. Problem - the lightning calendar addon that is downloadable from Mozilla has the highest max thunderbird version that it is compatible with as 52.9, not 59.2. However, this link https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Calendar/Calendar_Versions indicates that there is a stable release of Lightning available all the way up to thunderbird 62.0. So, if I upgrade lightning to the highest stable release, I should be able to run the lightning calendar addon. Problem - I cannot find where to actually download that higher stable release. The link I posted there only says it has been released. It has instructions on how to click on the link and go to the "development channel," but going there (which I assume is the same as the "developer home", as that is the only thing that sounds almost like "development channel"), there is no indication anywhere that I can find of the latest "stable" releases for download. So the other option is to downgrade thunderbird to an earlier version, one that is not available in tumbleweed. I don't really know how feasible that is Any ideas? [opensuse] using optimus prime on 43.3?

Hi, After solving the problem of loading nvidia drivers thanks to the help on this list, especially Andrei, I open a new thread in the hope that maybe, maybe my nvidia card can be used one day. I have an Asus GL552V laptop, i7 6700, optimus graphics intel/nvidia running opensuse leap 42.3, KDE It now runs the intel graphics only, in a terrible way with lot of flickering. I cannot disable the intel graphics or make the nvidia graphics primary in the BIOS (there are no such options there and I double-double-checked...). I would love to be able to switch between both cards (intel/nvidia) just as it was possible on OpenSuse 13x using suse-prime. If that's not possible, I'd love to have nvidia activated all the time. I don't want bumblebee, as for my work-flow it is not really helpful. I have installed the nvidia drivers from the opensuse nvidia repositiory and they are up and loaded. But running prime-select (installed from the 42.3 repo) something breaks so that I cannot logout from the KDE session nor shutdown with the KDE menu button. As somebody suggested I changed the display manager from sddm to kdm, but that didn't help. How can I goon testing and maybe solve the problem? What and where do I have to look?
