I wanted something to capture a video of the screen, instead of a photo. I hit google: "display video capture in Linux". And got this on the first highlighted hit:
Best Screen Recorders for Linux
Kazam. Kazam is a minimal and nifty tool for screencasting. ... Open Broadcaster Software Studio. OBS Studio is, without doubt, the most feature-rich and advanced screencasting application available for Linux. ... SimpleScreenRecorder. ... recordMyDesktop. ... VokoScreen. ... ScreenStudio. ... Green Recorder. ... Peek.
Más elementos... Linux screen recorder - It's FOSS https://itsfoss.com/best-linux-screen-recorders/
It is a site that seems to list software to do things in Linux with comments and photos :-)
Or at least has some. Or at least has one, I didn't search for others. In this case, I found the tool I wanted, kazam. Well, except that it doesn't work, but there are more tools in that list. Trying "SimpleScreenRecorder" next. [...] Yes, that one did what I wanted.

yes, me to.
may be sound was a bit difficult to setup (seems to be dependent of the main volume)

In this case I did not want sound - you can see what I did on my next post :-)
It warned about a possible issue with nvidia proprietary driver, but I ignored it. Seems to have been fine.

For the few times I needed screen recording I used vokoscreen, it's in the default repo (for TW at least).

VLC can record from the screen? :-o
I'm surprised.
Can it also record only a portion, say, a window?

I don't think so ... but who knows - VLC has so many knobs. ;-)

Recordmydesktop from commandline has worked (without configuring a lot) for me fine some years in past, but have not used since about 2 or 3 years now. (was on suse 11.4) if i remember correct, - but do not blame me if i am wrong, i am not sure anymore, - it was possible to record only a specific window.

The tool I used, "SimpleScreenRecorder", does.
